IDB approves more than US $745 million for new development
projects in member countries and Muslim communities in nonmember countries
Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 1 August, 2016 – The Board of Executive Directors of the
Islamic Development Bank (IDB) in their 313th meeting in Jeddah, approved US $745.3 million of
financing to support socio-economic development projects in member countries and Muslim
communities in non-member countries.
The approvals of the meeting, chaired by IDB Group President, Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali,
included:

US $378.6 million for Senegal inclusive of: “US $355.6 million for the regional express
train (Dakar City Center to the new AIBD Airport)”, and “US $23 million for phase II of
the Vocational Literacy Program for poverty reduction (VOLIP)”

US $66.4 million for Turkey as contribution to Manisa Training and Research Hospital
project
-
US $89 million for Côte d’Ivoire as funding for the Abidjan storm water drainage and
sanitation project

US $81.3 million for Lebanon to support the construction of the Northern Road project
(Syr Road and the Tripoli Eastern Ring Road – Phase II)

US $59.8 million for two projects in Cameroon, namely: “US $31.5 million to support the
integrated rural development project of the District of Chari Logone - Phase II”, as well
as “US $28.3 million to go to the national Blood Transfusion System Strengthening
project

US $30 million for the construction of Kandadji Bypass Road project in Niger

US $17.8 million for Mauritania as additional financing for the development of the
National Cardiology Center project

US $20 million for Kyrgyzstan to fund the rural water and sanitation improvement
project
The meeting also approved US $1.5 million as a special assistance grant for the emergency relief
program of the Internationally Displaced People (IDP) by the war in Iraq, US $600 thousand as a
special assistance operations under IDB Waqf Fund for educational projects in Muslim
communities in non-member countries (Fiji, Thailand, and Canada) as well as a US $300
thousand technical assistance grant for strengthening rural community adaptations to climate
change in The Gambia.
IDB Group President, Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali, asserted that the Board meeting also reviewed
a number of administrative and technical documents including the document on the IDB
Group’s ten year strategy, an updated report on the Country Partnership Strategy, as well as an
update on the “Lives and Livelihoods Fund” signed during the 40 th Annual Meeting of the Board
of Governors in Maputo, Mozambique, between IDB and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
which seeks to finance poverty alleviation projects in IDB member countries. The Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar have already contributed a total of US $ 150 million to the
Fund; “US $100 million by KSA and US $50 million by the State of Qatar”.
A report on the administrative and organizational activities reviewed at the 41 st Annual Meeting
of the Board of Governors in Jakarta in May was also presented to the Board.
