MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION
We are at beginning of the school year 2015-2016. We are expecting a good year at
Arthur Meighen. Our main focus will remain education. Our other areas of focus
this year will be school involvement and positive interactions with all others.
We want our students to contribute, be kind, patient, and honest; to encourage others, to apologize if necessary, to forgive and to thank others.
We want our staff to model the behaviour we want to see, to connect with the students they teach, and to involve them as much as possible.
We care about our students, we want them all to do well. We will focus on academics
and behaviour. Because we care we will expect students to live up to their responsibilities.
This year our school will look a little different. Our population is up from last year.
This resulted in rearranged classrooms and teachers. We will have in our English
program – 2 grade 5 classes, 2 grade 6 classes, 2 grade 7 classes and 3 grade 8 classes.
In our Immersion program we will have 2 grade 5 classes, 1 grade 6 class, 1 class of
grade 7 and one of grade 8. The Junior Life Skills, Supportive Learning Program, and
Learning Assistance Program will remain.
I hope everyone had a safe relaxing summer and have come back ready to work.
Mr. Ron Goodale, Principal

June 30 (Mon) - Last Day For Students
NOON HOUR EXPECTATIONS
-Students staying for lunch must return the permission form stating how often they will be staying for lunch—“at all times”
or “sometimes”. Should the frequency change from “at all times” to “sometimes”, please call the school. For safety reasons,
if a student normally stays for lunch and is not in the classroom at lunch time, parent(s)/guardian(s) will be called to confirm
his/her whereabouts.
-Students staying for lunch must eat in their homeroom classrooms.
-For safety reasons, students who normally stay for lunch may not leave the grounds to eat downtown or at a friend’s unless
a note or a phone call is provided to the homeroom teacher, office staff or Administration.
-Students may not go to Coop at 11:50 to buy a lunch or at any time during the lunch hour. *For bus students, this includes
before 9a.m. or at 3:30pm.
-Students must eat at their own desk.
-Students are to ensure that their desk is wiped down thoroughly with supplies as provided, after eating their lunch.
-Due to allergies, students should not be sharing food.
-Students must go outside when the bell goes at 12:10 and remain outside until 12:40. Students are allowed in to use the
washroom but must get permission/let an EA on duty know.
-Students may not stay inside the school or in their classroom unless supervised by a teacher.
-Gr.7 and 8 students are not allowed on the play structures.
--If indoor recess, students have several designated areas to choose from: Gr.5/6 may go to either the library or the small
computer lab, or they may remain in their homeroom. Gr.7/8 may go to the Power Mech. area or the large computer lab, or
they may remain in one of the homerooms. Various rules will apply to those areas. Intramurals, SSG meetings, and Student
Council meetings also happen over noon hours.
DRESS CODE
Students are expected to dress in a manner that is appropriate
to the educational environment. Clothing should not pose a
threat to the safety of students or the classroom/school in
learning situations such as labs, I.A. or P.E. etc... and should
be appropriate for the weather. Students must wear footwear at
all times and outdoor jackets, nor hats, are allowed in classrooms. Clothing that is questionable, i.e. offensive sayings,
swearing, gang related, promoting violence or excessively revealing will be addressed.
EMERGENCY DRILLS
Throughout the school year we will be holding a number of drills to familiarize students with procedures to
follow in the event of an actual emergency. These will
include fire drills, lockdown drills and an evacuation
drill over to École Crescentview School.
Should there be a real emergency, Mr. Goodale will
inform parents of the incident in a letter.
LIFETOUCH PICTURES
Dear Parents:
Lifetouch Canada will be taking students’ portraits at École Arthur Meighen School. Your child/
children will be photographed using a proof program. Below are some key points to the proof program:
•
Picture day is Friday, September 25, 2015
Watch for a Lifetouch reminder flyer that has been sent or is being sent to you shortly.
•
There is no need to return this flyer with the student on picture day. All Students will be photographed.
•
No payment is required on picture day.
•
A proof order form will arrive approximately 10 days after picture day with details about ordering On-Line
or with the order form.
•
Please return order forms to the school by the due date indicated on the order form.

Once orders are received, packages will be delivered to the school in approximately 10 days.
If a retake is required, please check the Retake Request box on the proof order form and return it to the photographer on photo retake
day.
IMPORTANT TRAFFIC FLOW NOTICE
You may have noticed a change to our entrance! It has been widened to allow for two lanes to exit our grounds, one lane to
turn left and one to turn right. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with the Student Drop-Off at the south end of the
school. Please do not park there. When dropping off or picking up pull ahead as much as possible. Please do not drop
students off at the side of the road, or across the street, as we do not have patrols at the crosswalk.
Students are welcome to ride their bikes to school but are reminded to stay off the bus loop. Students should also NOT
ride their bikes through the parking lot as there is too much traffic. Students who are meeting their parents at ECVS need to
walk around the back of the ECVS building and not walk through the Staff parking lot.
E.A.M.S bus students should stay on the bus rather than getting off at École Crescentview School in the morning. They
should also board the bus at École Arthur Meighen School at 3:30 p.m. rather than walking to E.C.V.S.
We want all our students to be safe and would appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this.
OUTDOORS CLUB
The Outdoors Club is open to all Grades and offers a variety of Outdoor Recreational Activities throughout the school year.
Some trips are open to all grades while others are open to students in a specific grade. The trips sell out quickly so if you are
interested be sure to sign up early! The first trip is a hiking trip to Spruce Woods Provincial park at the end of September and
is open to Grade 8 students.
SOCIAL MEDIA
If Administration/Staff know of, or are made aware of, any negative actions/issues/conflicts (ex. cyberbulling, harassment…) that arise with social media (ex. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter…) that impacts or disrupts the school day or our students, it will be acted upon, even if it takes place outside of school hours. The RCMP may contacted and/or involved.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES
It is expected that students bringing cell phones, tablets etc…to school will use them in a responsible, respectful manner, and
at appropriate times. Students may use them at recess and lunch recess, but not while eating their lunch. Students will not be
permitted to use them in classrooms unless allowed by the teacher. Failure to comply with requests to stop using the device
or to put it away may result in a phone call home or a possible suspension for defiance. Students may also be asked to keep
them in the Office until recess/break/lunch recess. The school will not be responsible for lost or stolen devices.
For legal and privacy reasons, students are prohibited from taking pictures, voice recording, or videotaping of students, staff,
or classroom activities without acknowledgment and permission. Students found sharing pictures electronically without
knowledge and consent from all participants may be subject to disciplinary action, i.e. suspension. RCMP may also be contacted and involved. This applies to all school functions (field trips, dances…)
2015-2016
THINGS TO GET INVOLVED WITH THIS YEAR
An important part of being in middle school is getting involved! It’s a great way to not only help others and the school, but
to learn new things and make new friends. This year, EAMS is again offering the following activities/committees/sports/
events:
Choir (Gr. 5-8) – There are 2 choirs at EAMS, a 5/6 choir and a 7/8 choir. Choir will start at the end of October, in preparation for our Winter Concert, and will be one lunch hour per cycle. Listen to announcements for more details as to practices.
Director: Mr. Goertzen
Club de Français (5 à 8) – French Club is offered to French Immersion students who are interested in practicing their conversational French in fun and creative ways. This club is offered once a month. The activity will be announced every month
and interested students will be asked to sign up in the office. Bienvenue!
Facilitators: Mme Guimond-Low, Mme Rheault
CPF Events (Canadian Parents for French) (Gr.5-8) - Our local CPF chapter organizes several events throughout the
year; a couple of events are held at ECVS for K-4 students (EAMS students enjoy volunteering their time at these events)
and one to two events are held at EAMS for 5-8 students. This is a great opportunity for students and their families to meet
each another, socialize, speak some French (or try!) and have fun!
CPF President – Mrs. R. McCutcheon, Mme K. Zwarich
Concours d’Art Oratoire (Gr.5-8) – This division-wide public speaking event (poetry/speech) sponsored by our local chapter of Canadian Parents for French typically takes place in Mar/Apr. Many teachers have included it as part of their curriculum; for some classes, it is voluntary. We have many students who enjoy this event and our students do very well divisionwide and at the provincial level. All students are encouraged to get involved with writing and performing a speech in French.
Staff: F.I. and Basic French teachers
Crafters’ Club (Gr.5-8) – This club runs from January until April and is open to any Gr.5-8 students who would like to
bring their own craft to work on in the Resource Room every Tuesday at lunch.
Staff: Mrs. Mills
Curling (Gr.6—8) – Curling is open to students in grades 6 through grade 8 and typically runs from November through
March. Students curl either Monday or Tuesday after school at the Portage Curling Club from 4:00 – 5:30. Students will be
responsible for their own transportation. Teams are flexible; they can be co-ed or multi-grade. Fee is approx. $60.00.
Brooms/Sliders are provided for players at no cost.
Staff: Mrs. Collett, Mr. Lucko and Mrs. Green
Dances (Gr.6-8) - There are 3 dances held every year—one in October, one in December/January and one in March.
EAMS, YQS, and LVS each take a turn hosting a dance—Gr.6 students from Fort la Reine, North Memorial as well as Gr.68 students from Oakville are also invited to all dances. The dances start at 7pm and finish at 10pm. Tickets must be bought
in advance; they are sold at or in front of our Office a couple of weeks prior to the dance.
Students may not buy a ticket at the door. Each school then hosts their own “end-of –year” dance at their respective
schools. Students from other schools may not attend the year-end dance like the other dances, however, Gr.8’s are allowed to
invite one guest (must be a Gr.8 student) from within our division.
***Please note, Gr.5’s are invited to the year-end dance from 7-9p.m.
Drama (Gr. 5-8) - EAMS has a Drama Club that is open to grades 5-8. The club works on acting and performance skills and
has varied performances throughout the year. A specific timeline and schedule for Drama has yet to be determined.
Staff: Mr. Goertzen
Intramurals (Gr.5-8) – This happens every day at 12:10 in the gym under the supervision of one of four teachers (TBA).
Gr.8 students help organize the intramurals. Each grade will have a particular day that they can attend (TBA in Sept.)
Jazz Band (Gr.8) – Jazz Band is open to Gr. 8 students. It will start at the end of October, in preparation for our Winter
Concert, and will be one lunch hour per cycle. Listen to announcements for more details as to practices.
Director: Mr. Goertzen
Open Gym (Gr.5-8) - Open Gym means that the gym is open every morning from 8 to 8:45a.m. for those who would like
to start their day off with some physical activity of their choice. Some students like to shoot hoops, others like to play floor
hockey, and others like to play a low organized game. Tie up your gym shoes and come and have some fun!
Supervisor: Mrs. DiCesare
Outdoors Club (Gr.5-8) – The Outdoors Club is open to all students throughout the year. Every grade is offered 1 special
trip during the year. In addition, there are other Outdoor trips open to ALL grades. There is a cost; cost varies--$15-$50.

Unfortunately, if there are no organizers/coaches/teacher supervisors, there won’t be a team.
Spelling Club (Gr.5-8) – Spelling Club is held once a week, typically on Tuesdays, at 12:10 for students who enjoy spelling
and enriching their vocabulary. A Spelling Bee is held in the spring and prizes will be awarded to the top three spellers.

made. EAMS offers Volleyball (Sept-Dec), Basketball (Dec-Feb), Curling (Oct-Mar), Badminton (March-April), Girls’ Soccer (MayJune). Track and Field practices will be open in May to all students interested, in preparation for our annual Track and Field
Meet, held at YQS in May. Students who place 1st and 2nd go to “Cities” in June.
Coaches: to be announced
Student Council (Gr.5-8) – Student Council is composed of “Room Reps”. Room Reps must apply. Selections will follow.
Staff Advisor: Mrs. Klassen and Mrs. Hildebrand
Student Support Group (Gr.5-8) – Students interested in being an SSG need to apply in the fall to Mme Rheault, our Guidance Counsellor. An application form will be available to students. Mme Rheault visits all classrooms to talk about SSGs and
how to get involved. Meetings will be arranged as needed.
Staff Advisor: Mme Rheault
Students for Change (Gr.8) – Students for Change (SFC) was created two years ago by former Grade 8 student, Hayley
Bedard, who had an interest in social justice themes. The group focuses on raising awareness of different causes of interest to
students. At times this has involved fundraising or hosting events or has aligned itself with the campaigns from the Free the
Children group. In the first two years of existence the group only consisted of students from one of the grade 8 homerooms.
Now, any Grade 8 student with an interest in social justice themes will be able to participate. Information will be available
shortly as far as meeting dates and campaigns that will be undertaken this year.
Staff Advisor: Mr. Rosset, Mrs. Davey
“Thriller” Dance Flash Mob – A tradition every October at EAMS, students have the opportunity to learn, practice, and
finally, perform a Flash Mob to the song “Thriller” in the hallways (in Oct.) for students.
Variety Night (Gr.5-8) - Variety Night, an event sponsored by our Home and School Association, takes place at the end of
April/beginning of May and is open to any student who might be interested in performing in front of an audience, whether
with a vocal performance, piano/guitar/violin/any instrument, dance, etc…This is always a sold-out event and very popular
with students, many of whom start preparing in October for auditions held after Spring Break.
Organizing Staff: Ms. Zwarich, Mr. Goertzen, Staff, Home and School volunteers
X-Country (Gr. 5-8) – This happens for the month of September and part of October only. A short season! There are several “meets” as well as provincials.
Staff Supervisors: Mrs. DiCesare, Mr. Crevier, Mrs. Bedard, Mrs. Cooper
Yoga (Gr.5-8) – Yoga is offered to any Gr.5-8 student every Thursday at 12:10 in the Band Room from October to May.
Feel free to drop in any time.
Staff: Mme Rheault
FROM THE COUNSELOR
Welcome back to a new school year! I hope you have all had a restful summer. September is a busy month and counseling
activities will be starting right away as well.
During the first few weeks of school, I will be visiting classrooms to talk about our SSG (Student Support Group) Program.
SSG’s are positive student leaders who support other students in our school by helping them solve problems. They are committed to making EAMS a great place to come to everyday. They also keep their eyes open for situations that might require
adult intervention and share that information with a trusted adult. If your child is interested in being a part of this program,
he/she will be asked to fill out a short form and pass it on to me, Mme Rheault.
I spend most of my day working with students by doing individual or group counseling. I am also trying to add less conventional options for students such as gardening and yoga. I can also provide support to parents or families. Students have many
issues to deal with that affect their functioning in the classroom. If you feel your child is in need of support relating to any
social/emotional issue, please feel free to contact me at the school (204-857-3405). We can work together to figure out how I
might best be able to help.
TERRY FOX FOUNDATION
This year the school will celebrate the Terry Fox Walk on
Wednesday, Sept. 30th. Money raised will be donated to
the Canadian Cancer Society. “Coins for Cancer” will
start Thursday Sept. 24th. Each day has a designated coin

There will also be a poster contest. A BBQ Hot Dog lunch
will follow the walk ($2.50 for hot dog &drink).

weeks of the season, teams play games on two days and
practice another 1-2 times. Transportation to and from
games and practices needs to be arranged by the parents,
with a pick up time of usually 5pm. The Phys.Ed. staff
encourages all grade 7 and 8 students that enjoy the game
of volleyball and are able to commit to the season to come
and play.
THANKSGIVING DINNER
EAMS will be holding their annual Thanksgiving lunch on
Thursday October 8th. All staff and students will share a

SNACK PROGRAM
Once again our Snack Program will be operational at EAMS.
Volunteers prepare a nutritious snack once a month that is offered free of charge to all students. Right now we are in need of a few volunteers to help with the prep work.
Please call the school if you have two hours to give towards this program on a monthly basis.
SCHOOL INSURANCE
This year, all students are covered under a universal insurance plan. This plan covers your
child during school hours only and functions i.e.: field trips.
Important: This does not replace the Reliable Insurance Plan which has been offered to
all students in the past. If you wish to use Reliable Insurance for 2015-2016 please pick up an
application at the office. The Reliable Insurance covers your child 24 hours, 7 days a week.
