Transit Site
Battle Won!
The fight against the proposals for
travellers’ transit sites in Teignbridge was a
high-octane affair! Stanley with several
Conservative County Council candidates
recently attended a protest meeting in
Ipplepen and a demonstration outside
County Hall in Exeter.
Stanley said: “Without
Christine Channon’s
timely action as
Conservative Leader
of the County Council,
and the unanimous
support of the Devon
County Conservative
Group, in pulling the
issue off the agenda
of the Development
Committee,
Teignbridge might
already be presented
with a fait accompli. As
it is the proposals
have now been
withdrawn. Chalk one
up to the
Conservatives!”

Fighting for Teignbridge:
Newton Abbot Main Post Office
Working with local Conservatives, including Newton Abbot Deputy
Mayor Councillor Ken Lewis, as well as with other committed groups
and individuals, Stanley is fighting to prevent the closure of the main
Newton Abbot Post Office in Market Walk or, at the very least, to
ensure that any relocation provides full and convenient access,
especially for the elderly and disabled, while maintaining a full range of
services. The fight continues!

Action on Crime
Crime is out of
control. Gun crime is
on the increase and
there are now more
than a million violent
crimes a year.
Teignbridge is not
immune to these
trends. Tony Blair said
he wanted to be
“Tough on crime and
Controlled
immigration:
Conservatives believe
we need a fair
immigration system
that helps genuine
refugees and gives
priority to those who
want to come to Britain
to work hard and make
a positive contribution.
Britain’s immigration and
asylum system should be
decided in Britain, not
Brussels. Within the first
month, we will set out
plans to enable
Parliament to put an
annual limit on the number
of people who come to
Britain.
tough on the causes
of crime.” This is all
talk. Detection rates
for burglary are at an
all time low, with fewer
than one in seven
burglaries cleared up
by the police. Within
the first week of taking
office, the
Conservatives will
announce the end of
Labour’s early release
schemes which lets
criminals out of prison
early. Conservatives
will also change the
law to ensure that
householders can
properly protect
themselves when
confronted by an
intruder without fear of
prosecution.
CONSERVATIVE PRIORITIES ARE:
MORE POLICE. CLEANER HOSPITALS. LOWER TAXES.
SCHOOL DISCIPLINE. CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION.
Conservatives are also committed to restoring the link
between pensions and earnings, a vital issue for the
many people of pensionable age in the Constituency.
Conservatives will oppose the Single European Currency
and the European Constitution.
Stanley says: “My priority is to make life better for the
people of Teignbridge and help restore our pride in our
country.”
HELP US TO HELP YOU!
Please tell us the issues that concern you.
Under Labour, the
number of
managers in the
NHS is increasing
three times as fast
as the number of
doctors and
nurses. Every year
5000 people die
from hospitalacquired infections
and the incidence of
MRSA has doubled
since 1997.
Conservatives will
give people the
opportunity to
choose cleaner,
better hospitals.

WORKING FOR TEIGNBRIDGE
Your Devon County Council Conservative Candidates
Cecilia Brown: Teign Estuary
Where Can They Park?
John Clatworthy: Dawlish
Working for Dawlish
Geoff Bladon: Teignmouth East
Child Safety First
Local Campaigner Cecilia Brown says, “Where
can they park? Residents in Bishopsteignton
and Shaldon have a huge problem with car
parking and congestion in their daily lives. In
Bishopsteignton alone, there are 1138
dwellings and over 2000 cars, in Shaldon the
ratio is probably similar. Is it surprising that
people can take so long to find a parking space
so they can use the local shops that they find it
easier to drive to the Super Market? This
cannot be good for local communities and must
be addressed.”
John Clatworthy says, “Prior to being re-elected
I set objectives on Education, Social Services
and Highway issues to benefit Dawlish. With
Education I have secured £3.9 million
investment in our schools which educate 1780
pupils. Dealing with Social Services, I am the
Executive Member for Adults and guided the
‘Modernisation agenda’ through the Council.
This will benefit the elderly and people with high
support needs, whom I care passionately about.
As to highways, many roads and pavements
have been resurfaced and enhanced and the
opening hours of the Recycling Centre at
Shutterton have been extended. I will continue to
work for Dawlish.”
Councillor Geoff Bladon has concerns for the
safety of the schoolchildren of Hazeldown
Primary School. He believes it is dangerous for
children to have a 40 mph speed limit outside a
primary school, especially where there is a
school crossing patrol operational. He met with
several parents early in 2004 all of whom
shared his concerns. Geoff is trying to get the
speed limit reduced to 30 mph and, during the
time that the school crossing patrol is
operational, further reduced to 20mph at the
point of the patrol.

A problem with a few makes
misery for many
Local Campaigner and Town and District
Councillor Audrey Warren says, “There is a
problem with a small number of thoughtless
young people in Bovey Tracey. Most of the
young are decent and responsible, but a few
are sadly making life for those who live in the
centre of the Town miserable with unacceptable,
anti social behaviour, particularly in the
afternoon and evening. I intend to investigate
this problem with a view to finding a way to give
some relief to residents.”
William Long: Teignbridge South
Commonsense prevails
Stephen Webber: Exminster and
Kenton
Listening to the people
Local campaigner Steve Webber was heavily
involved in the fight to send the County
Council’s proposed transit sites back to the
drawing board. Steve says: “Having been born
and bred in Shillingford Abbot, I wanted to see
the proposed plans rejected and ensure they
were moved to more suitable locations. I want
to bring a common sense approach to any
further proposals and ensure local residents
concerns are taken into consideration.”
William Long says, “Devon County Council is
responsible for the cost effective provision of
services, over a wide area with very diverse
requirements and priorities. The county includes
conurbations, villages, farms and remote moor
land. Balancing the needs of the people living in
Devon requires unusual skills and sensitivity.
The lack of these in the present Council was
clear from the proposal to built four Travellers’
Transit sites, all in rural and unsuitable places.
Two of these sites fell in the Teignbridge South
Division. I am very glad that the Conservative
Group was committed to voting down the
proposal and I did all I could to help that
process.”

Jerry Brook: Chudleigh Rural
Double Take on Cameras
Local campaigner Jerry Brook believes that
properly sited speed cameras help to reduce
speed related accidents. Jerry says, “The
turnoff to Tedburn from the A30 remains very
dangerous.” He fears however, that speed
cameras are too often placed merely to trap
motorists into another “stealth tax.” They should
be sited to do the job for which they were
intended, namely to cut accidents, not to make
war on the motorist. “This is an issue I can really
tackle after May 5th,” promises Jerry.

Keeping our promises
Allan Vizor: Newton Abbot South
Campaigning to make peoples’
lives better
As a local campaigner and Town Councillor, I
was at the forefront of the vigorous campaign
protesting against the relocation of Newton
Abbot main post office. Now there is the
possible loss of Decoy post office. Local
people will be greatly inconvenienced should
this happen. I feel particularly incensed about
the lack of consultation and the possibility of job
losses to loyal staff. I shall do all I can to avert
this closure.”
County Councillor Stuart Barker has fought hard
to fund improvements in the local community.
He says, “In 2001 my manifesto said that I
would campaign for an increased Police
presence in our area. We now have
Neighbourhood Beat Managers covering all of
the area I represent. I said I would want to see
increased educational opportunities in our local
schools. South Dartmoor has new classrooms
and increased sports facilities. Blackpool
school has new classrooms and a new hall.
Ilsington school has a new resource area. The
care of the elderly was also a priority for me, we
have improved rates being paid for care in
residential homes and more people are being
cared for in their homes. There is still much to
campaign and fight for, top of my list is cutting
the level of Council Tax increases to keep them
in line with inflation.”
Mike Walters: Kingsteignton
Representing Local People
Mike Walters
says, “I live in
Kingsteignton
and am the local
representative. I
am conversant
with the problems
that arise and can
be easily
contacted. I will
listen to residents
and assist in
finding solutions
to problems of
children’s schooling, traffic congestion, keeping
Council Tax down to a minimum, keeping
efficient services and finding solutions to the
question of the possible urban development in
the village. Being local and getting things done
is my forte.”
Mark Johnson: Newton Abbot North
Understanding your concerns
Mark Johnson says, “As a Local Campaigner,
my first goal is to talk to as many people in this
area as possible. It’s important to understand
what concerns people have and that requires
plenty of listening. Visiting people will also give
me the chance to highlight common sense
Conservative Party policies that I believe will
make peoples’ lives better.”
Our priority...
