Whatever the case, I am sure we are all in agreement that we must now look at those running in the runoff election and prepare to cast our votes for those we think are the best candidates. And then we need to prepare for the General Election when we will be voting to elect Republican candidates and vote to make President Obama a One Term President. Some of our Montgomery County candidates have opponents in the General Election. MCRW will be helping these candidates monetarily with funds that we budgeted for that purpose at the beginning of 2012. I want to thank all of the candidates in the 2012 primary election. To those of you who won your race, I know that you have hard work ahead of you and MCRW is here to help you in any way. To those of you who did not win, thank you for your efforts in making Montgomery County a better place. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. When I went to the Polls to cast my vote, I was so happy to see so many of our MCRW members volunteering— either as election officials, or in support of a candidate. It felt good to know that so many members were involved. Thank you for your hard work and I am sure I will be seeing many of you at the run-off election and the general election. The MCRW membership never fails to impress me. Speaking of elections, it is not too soon to begin thinking of MCRW elections for 2013. The nominating committee will be elected at our June membership meeting and will make its report at our September general meeting. Volunteer hour forms are due at the end of June. A Volunteer hour form is included in this newsletter. Also included is a Guide Sheet that can serve as a reminder of some of the Volunteer opportunities in the second quarter of 2012. Please take the time to complete the form and email it to Susan Stockholm at sstox@me.com. These volunteer hours are very important in helping MCRW win awards at our TFRW Convention next year. (Some of these awards are in the form of a monetary donation and MCRW always likes to receive money.) June Guest Speaker: As I write this newsletter, today was a special day in the President George W. Bush legacy. Today, the official portraits of President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush were unveiled at the White House. Of course, President Obama made a few comments at the portrait unveiling. One comment made me flinch as I felt it was Alice Melancon somewhat uncalled for. “The months before I took the oath of office were a chaotic time. We knew our economy was in trouble, our fellow Americans were in pain, but we wouldn’t know until later just how breathtaking the financial crisis had been.” The ceremony probably could have been a little more comfortable for those Bush family members and administration members in attendance if those comments had been omitted. As they made their little speeches, I was once again reminded of the graciousness of the First Lady and the genuineness of President Bush. And I had to laugh when President Bush quipped “I am also pleased, Mr. President, that when you are wandering these halls as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask, 'What would George do?'” He also joked at one point and told Mrs. Obama, “Madame First Lady, thank you so much for inviting our rowdy friends to my hanging.” President Bush’s comments seemed to make the portrait unveiling less tense in what could have been a very stressful event. In my humble opinion, President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush were wonderful representatives of the American People and I miss them in the White House. So, we continue our work toward Election Day in November. Stay healthy because I think this will be a battle that will require each of us to pitch in and get our Republican candidates elected. This year the students were selected from the Lone Star College System. The two recipients, Kara de Vries and Kymberlee Mason, were recognized at the Montgomery County Republican Women’s May luncheon where each woman was introduced to the club’s members. At that time, they received their scholarship checks plus a basket containing school supplies, money gift cards, and several personal items. The information that impressed the Scholarship Committee to choose these included the following: Kara de Vries Kymberlee Mason Goal: To become an Ultrasound Medical Diagnostician. Married for 11 years with two children. Was 1 of 10 children raised by a single mother. Started school several years back, but had to drop out due to a very serious operation, which prevented her from continuing her education at that time. However, after overcoming the complications from this operation, she returned to Lone Star College and has been attending school for the last two years. Has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is a Phi Beta Kappa member. Volunteering experiences involve many hours dedicated to church activities and helping at the Imaging Department at St. Lukes Hospital. Kymberlee’s references describe her as highly motivated, committed to all aspects of her education, and very intelligent. Goal: To become a licensed physical therapist and stay in the community by eventually working at Health South. A mother of two who is returning to school after an absence of 6 years. The time Kara did not attend school was due to taking care of her family and working while her husband was deployed to Iraq two times and to Afghanistan one time. Her dream now is to finish the college education she began earlier. In addition to working and raising her family, Kara volunteers by helping other wives who have husbands serving overseas, aids in church projects, and helps in the school where her children attend. Kara’s references describe her as a loving wife and mother. She is devoted to God and her country. In her studies, she is highly motivated and moral. MCRW was proud to award scholarships to these 2 deserving young ladies. 4 LEGISLATIVE REPORT Chair: Bette Osborn The following was taken from an email sent out by Representative Kevin Brady. ObamaCare is paid for in part by taxing lifesaving and pain reducing medical devices like heart stents, pacemakers, MRI machines and artificial joints. This tax due to hit next year will either be passed through to patients in the form of higher prices and insurance premiums or the companies that manufacturer these medical devices will be forced to lay off workers and cut research and development. Many of these medical device manufacturers are small startup companies with marginal profits who can least afford a tax assessed on their sales. The Committee also repealed ObamaCare’s “Medicine Cabinet Tax” which prohibits Americans from spending their own money through flexible spending arrangements (FSAs), health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs), health savings accounts (HSAs), and Archer medical savings accounts (Archer MSAs) for nonprescription medicines Washington, D.C. -The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation, cosponsored by senior committee member Congressman Kevin Brady of Texas, to repeal ObamaCare’s medical device tax and its ban on patients using their health savings accounts to buy needed over-the-counter medicines. “If the tax goes into effect next year, it will cost Texas nearly 2,000 jobs and almost $145 million from paychecks,” said Brady. “Repealing ObamaCare’s tax on medical devices will save 43,000 American jobs, lower costs for patients and encourage more research into life-saving devices.” Brady added, “Giving families back the freedom to use their health savings accounts to buy affordable medicine stretches their budgets and keeps them from being forced to see a doctor for unnecessary prescriptions – which was yet another Washington-knows-best mandate within ObamaCare.” A REMINDER ABOUT OUR MEETINGS Alice Melancon I just returned from the 2012 Republican Party of Texas Convention in Fort Worth and witnessed our TFRW President Carolyn Hodges trying to be heard over the luncheon guests at the TFRW Tribute to Women's Luncheon. What made it more distressing was the amount of table conversation while she was calling out the names of the honorees. This occurrence reminded me of something I have been wanting to mention to our members. By now, you have probably noticed that the sound system at River Plantation never ceases to amaze us. Sometimes, it works beautifully and other time it doesn't work at all. Many of the MCRW luncheon guests have mentioned that they are having problem hearing our business meetings. For this reason, it is my request that luncheon conversations be limited to a minimum during MCRW business or while our speaker is speaking. Of course, you are encouraged to visit with each other during the social period of 11 AM-11:30 AM and during the meal portion of our meeting. Hopefully this will allow everyone to hear what is being said at our meetings. Thank you for your help! 5 2012 REPUBLICAN PARTY OF TEXAS CONVENTION Alice Melancon The 2012 Republican Party of Texas Convention was held June 7-9, 2012 in Fort Worth Texas. MCRW club was well represented as Delegates to the convention. Among the highlights of the Convention was Congressman Paul Ryan's Keynote Address. He mentioned that he loves Texas because Texas loves freedom. Several of our Texas State Republican elected officials took the opportunity to address the delegates. Congressman Kevin Brady spoke to the members of Texas' Congressional District 8. He gave us encouraging words regarding the upcoming Presidential Election. On Friday, at the TFRW Tribute to Women Luncheon, MCRW members Donna Barr, Lezlie Cuellar, Mary Lea Kirk and Nancy McWilliams were recognized and honored for their service. Steve Munisteri was reelected as Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas and MCRW's own Melinda Fredricks' was reelected as Vice Chairman. Borah Van Dormolen was elected Texas' National Committeewoman and Dr. Robin Armstrong was elected National Committeeman. Montgomery County's Dr. Wally Wilkerson was elected to represent Congressional District 8 at the Electoral College in December. Rosemary Roe was reelected to the SREC and Brigitte Izzo was elected to the National Convention Nominating Committee. In addition, the 2012 Platform of the Republican Party of Texas was formulated and approved. A big “Thank You” goes out to all MCRW Members and Associates who gave their time, talent and treasures to attend the convention. 6 CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES AND AWARDS Chair: Susan Stockholm Reporting Volunteer Hours April, May, and June volunteer hours and Caring for America hours are due by June 30. With more than 10,000 votes of his own in the primary, Beauchamp finished a close third in the election to fill the open Montgomery County Attorney seat. Beauchamp made the following statement regarding his support for Mr. Lambright: “I am pleased to endorse J D Lambright for County Attorney. J D is a fiscal conservative who will use his proven legal experience and successful business results to bring a new day to the County Attorney’s office…something that is desperately needed. Both J D and I consistently had one thing in common on the campaign trail -- the understanding that the County Attorney’s office cannot continue to conduct business as usual. Instead, the office needs a fresh and innovative approach that makes the most effective and efficient use of our tax dollars, while at the same time providing quality core legal services.” In response to the endorsement announcement, J D remarked “Since the beginning, Gary has been a strong Conservative voice on the campaign trail. The fact that he is endorsing my campaign is a testament to our shared Conservative values and our mutual belief in a fiscally conservative approach that brings about critical changes to this office. Gary ran a great campaign and over 10,000 Montgomery County residents voted for him. His support means a great deal to me.” Lambright also stated "Throughout this campaign, I have heard repeatedly that fundamental changes need to be made in the way our County Attorney's office operates on a day-to-day basis. For example, the office needs to be much more responsive and accessible to its customers, it needs to significantly enhance its litigation skills and expertise, and it needs key individuals having the specific skill sets necessary to provide prompt expert legal advice and services. I pledge to assemble the best team of attorneys, investigators, and legal support staff to ensure that these much-needed changes are implemented in a timely and fiscally Conservative manner. I am the only candidate in this race who will do this.” "Beauchamp’s endorsement, along with my being the candidate recommended by the Texas Patriots PAC and being selected as the "best" candidate by the Conservative Coalition of Montgomery County, puts me in a strong position as we enter this next phase of a long campaign. My key focus now is to get my supporters back out to the polls for the July 31st runoff election." For more information on J D Lambright, please contact the campaign at jdlambrightcampaign@gmail.com.
