NORTH CAROLINA
• Carolina finished 13-5 in duals this season, its highest win total since the 2008-09 campaign.
• Redshirt senior Evan Henderson has nine pins on the year and 45 for his All-America career. He currently ranks fourth in school history in career falls and is
just five shy of the UNC record of 50 set by three-time NCAA champ T.J. Jaworsky.
• Henderson is one of five Tar Heels ranked nationally by InterMat. In addition to Henderson, who has been ranked as high as No. 5 at 149 pounds, Ethan Ramos
(No. 2 at 174), Joey Ward (No. 6 at 141), John Michael Staudenmayer (No. 11 at 165) and Alex Utley (No. 19 at 184) have been in the polls throughout the
season.
• Carolina is led by first-year head coach Coleman Scott. Scott, who came to UNC as an assistant in 2014, was an NCAA champion in 2008 and an Olympic
bronze medalist in London in 2012.
• NC State finished 23-1 in duals in 2015-16, setting a new school record for most wins in a single season. The 23 wins led the nation, and NC State finished
ranked No. 2 nationally, the highest ranking in program history.
• NC State finished 9-1 against ranked foes in 2015-16, outscoring those opponents 239-122. The Pack was a perfect 3-0 against top-five opponents; winning
at No. 4 Oklahoma State and at No. 2 Iowa, and defeating No. 5 Missouri at home.
• NC State became the first team in NCAA history to win at Oklahoma State (19-15) and at Iowa (21-17) in the same season. The Pack is also the first ACC team
to beat the Hawkeyes at any location.
• Two-time defending NCAA heavyweight champion Nick Gwiazdowski enters the ACC Championship with an NCAA-best 82 match winning streak. He recently
finished his NC State dual career a perfect 55-0.
• NC State has four wrestlers ranked in the top-10 in every major publication entering the ACC Championship. Those four have combined to go 83-5 this season,
and a perfect 19-0 in ACC duals.
TAR HEELS

elcome to the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling
Championship. As you enjoy our competition, you are
witnessing national-caliber student-athletes performing
at the highest level.
The overall non-conference winning percentage for
ACC teams. The ACC is 59-16 against non-conference
foes, with seven of the 16 losses coming at the hands
of ranked opponents, and four of those to teams ranked
fifth or better.
The ACC is coming off a successful fall season in which our
conference captured two NCAA team championships and one
individual title. We look forward to the 2016 winter postseason as our
Olympic Sports teams continue to build on a longstanding winning
tradition.
In 2015, NC State’s Nick Gwiazdowski became only the third ACC
grappler to win multiple NCAA titles. An eighth-place finisher as
a freshman at Binghamton, he has a chance this year to be a fourtime All-American and become the ACC’s first three-time national
champion.
Four of the top 13 wrestlers ranked by InterMat in the 141-pound
weight class are from the ACC. NC State’s Kevin Jack leads the
way at No. 3, followed by North Carolina’s Joey Ward (6th), Virginia
Tech’s Solomon Chishko (8th), and Pitt’s Mikey Racciato (13th).

The non-conference winning percentage for ACC
schools against nationally ranked opponents. ACC
teams are 14-7 against teams ranked in the NWCA top

For the first time in its history, NC State earned an invitation to the
NWCA National Duals Championship Series. Both State, which
defeated No. 2 Iowa, and Virginia Tech, which defeated No. 8
Michigan, represented the ACC in the Duals.
NC State has wrestled 10 nationally ranked teams this year and
has won nine of them, including downing No. 2 Iowa, No. 4
Oklahoma State and No. 5 Missouri.

Virginia Tech, which clinched its second straight ACC regularseason title with a 5-0 record in duals, has now won 10
straight dual matches against ACC teams.
NC State set a school record earlier this year with its 20th dual
match win of the season, downing West Virginia, 24-9. State
is currently 23-1.
No fewer than 26 ACC wrestlers are currently ranked in their
respective weight categories this week by InterMat Magazine.
Seventeen ACC grapplers are currently ranked in InterMat’s
Top 10 in their respective weight classes, nine of them among
the Top Five nationally.
Last season saw ACC Wrestling cap off an excellent year with
Virginia capturing the conference title, followed by all six of the
league’s teams placing among the top 28 of the NCAA
Championships. Virginia Tech led the way with a 10th-place team
finish. The ACC had an all-time high of 10 wrestlers earn All-America
honors at the NCAA Championships, led by two-time heavyweight
national champion Nick Gwiazdowski of NC State. Gwiazdowski
became just the third wrestler in conference history to earn multiple
national titles.
The ACC has long stood for excellence on the mat and in the
classroom. That commitment was demonstrated last season, when
85 wrestlers were named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll, having
earned a 3.0 GPA or better for the school year. That was one of
several highlights in a year that 82 ACC teams in all sports received
Academic Progress Rate recognition awards from the NCAA, once
again the most of any Power 5 conference.
Our congratulations and best wishes go out to all of our studentathletes, our coaches and programs, and my sincere thanks to you
for your support of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Sincerely,
John D. Swofford, Commissioner
Atlantic Coast Conference
NC State’s Nick Gwiazdowski has won 82 consecutive
matches, including a perfect 35-0 mark in 2014-15 and a
27-0 record this year. He has the longest current win streak
of any wrestler in Division 1 in the nation.
