CS BEAM OVERVIEW

CS Beam is a beam design application that performs single member sizing analysis to determine the most efficient material for beams, headers and joists based on specified design criteria. The first time using CS Beam , it is recommended that the program Presets be modified, since load analysis is based on a series of user-defined settings.

PRESETS

Presets are user-defined settings applied by CS Beam in specific situations. Program presets define default program values, set deflection criteria, establish vibration conditions, set the preferred framing member analysis approach, as well as a variety of other tasks.

Clicking the Presets icon or selecting Edit > Presets displays the Presets window.

The total deflection check is calculated based on ½ of the dead load (0.5D+L) versus using the full dead load (D+L). This is allowed wood only when the member is dry (moisture content less than 16% during installation) and will remain dry when the building is used (i.e. the member is installed and exposed to the elements).

BEARING LENGTH FROM POINT LOAD OF TOP LOADED BEAMS

This is the assumed bearing length at the top of the beam of any concentrated load applied over a bearing. This value is used only in the “Secondary Bearing Length Check”. It should be the width/length (measured along the beam) of the wall or column (above the beam) that is applying the concentrated load. Entering a larger value will increase the capacity used for the “Secondary

Bearing Length Check”.

Design Overrides Tab: Bearing Length from Point Load of Top Loaded Beams

Ì NOTE: This setting is used with Canadian codes only.

USE TOTAL BEAM WIDTH FOR UNBRACED LENGTH CALCULATIONS OF

MULTIPLY MEMBERS WITH DEPTH-TO-WIDTH RATIOS > 2.5

When checked, the analysis for “beam lateral buckling” will use the full beam width/thickness instead of the ply thickness for “b” in the calculations. This will have an effect on capacity ofor beams that are NOT continuously laterally braced. Having this checked can greatly increase the calculated unbraced bending capacity, and the capacity of a multi-ply beam will match that of a solid beam of the same total width.

Highlight a specific Fastener Option in the list and then click Move Up and Move Down to prioritize the list.

Fasteners are analyzed starting with the first entry, then progresses down the list until a fastener configuration option meets the specified design criteria. For example, if ½” diameter bolts are listed at the top of the Fastener Option list, no matter how small the applied load, the program will specify a bolted multi-ply connection even though nails or screws might have been sufficient based solely on the applied loads.

Click Delete to delete a fastener line item from the available Fastener Options list.

Ì NOTE: There are no on-center spacing options listed for the SDS or SDW screws. For these two fastener options, the required spacing will be calculated based on the applied loads and results reported on the calculation sheet.

Also when all three configuration options are selected then all three items will be added to the

Fastener Options list and will be considered during analysis.

Ì NOTE: The fastener list in the figure above is not ordered based on lateral strength.

0.122 x 3.25” spiral nails (approximately a 10d sinker)

0.131 x 2.5” nails (8d common)

0.131 x 3” nails (8d common) same lateral strength, only the lengths are different

A girder , commonly referred to as a flush beam, is any flush member within a system that supports other structural members. A rafter or joist is also a flush member, but in the confines of the Structure program, they do not support other load-bearing elements.

Girder

Joists are repetitive on center spaced members used within a CS Build defined area. Rafters are considered joists when used in a roof system.

A member will fail if it does not meet the L/ criteria OR if it deforms more than the value defined for Max LL Defl . To essentially “disable” Max LL Defl.

set the value to 9.99 such that the L/ values control allowable deflection.

DESIGN SPAN EVALUATION

CS Beam evaluates bearing lengths in the following manner:

For members supported by walls, the design span subtracts the width of the wall and adds 7/8”. For example a 12’-0” girder supported by 2x4 walls at each end would have a design span of 11’-6 ¾” (12’-0” minus 7” for the bearings, plus 7/8” for each bearing).

For members supported by girders, the design span subtracts the entire width of the girder. For example a 12’-0” member supported at each end by 3 ½” wide girders would have a design span of 11’-5” (12’-0” minus 3 ½” for each bearing).

For simple span members with a cantilevered end, the bearing moves to the exterior face of the wall and the 7/8” correction is omitted when determining design span.

For multiple span members, the design span extends to the middle of the interior bearing. For a 24’-0” member supported by 2x4 walls at each end and at midspan, the two design spans will equal 11’-9

3/8” (12’-0” span from the exterior bearing to the middle of the center bearing minus 3 ½” plus 7/8” correction for the exterior bearing).

FIRE CUT is a bevel on the end of the member, extending to the top of the member at the inside face of the end bearing. It is allowed for any member and material type.

SLOPED CUT is a bevel with a user-defined Scarf Slope and Heel Height subject to the following limitations:

Only allowed for rectangular members

Only allowed for single span members

Not allowed on a cantilever

No point loads are allowed on the member

NOTCHED TOP is a notch with a user-defined Notch Length and Heel Height , subject to the following limitations:

Only allowed for rectangular members

Only allowed for single span members

Not allowed on a cantilever

No point loads are allowed on the member

The heel height cannot be less than 0.6 times the member depth

For LVL or SCL, the notch length cannot be more than 1/3 of the span

For glue-lams, the notch length cannot be more than 1/3 of the span or three times the heel height, whichever is less

Not allowed on a cantilever

No point loads are allowed on the member

For LVL or SCL, the notch depth cannot be more than 0.1 times the member depth

For glue-lams, the notch depth cannot be more than 0.1 times the member depth or three inches, whichever is less

ADDITIONAL LOAD

An Additional load adds to the Standard Loading specified on the Member Description tab.

For example, a floor girder with Standard Loading of 40 psf live and 10 psf dead has an

Additional Uniform load added of 80 plf live and 30 plf dead. The total applied load would be 160 plf ((40 + 10) + (80 + 30)).

REPLACEMENT LOAD

A Replacement load adds the new loading and removes the Standard Loading in the area that the Replacement Load is applied. For example, a floor girder with Standard Loading of 40 psf live and 10 psf dead has a Replacement Uniform load added of 80 plf live and 30 plf dead applied to the entire member. In this case, the total applied load would be 110 plf ((40 + 10) – (40 + 10) +

(80 + 30)).

PLF LOAD

A plf (pounds per linear foot) loading type requires a beginning and ending location and the magnitude of the uniform load.

PSF LOAD

A psf (pounds per square foot) loading type requires a tributary width along with the locations and magnitudes.

PRODUCTS TAB

The Products Tab lists all products being considered for the designed member.
