Environ 3 Fan Control
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Environ 3 Fan Control Overview
Environ 3 Fan Controls are for permanently installed 3-speed fan motors of up to 1.5 amps.
The unit is equipped with an LED readout, providing full-function, 3-way and multi-location
speed control when used with Environ 3 Channel Remotes. Manual override allows the fan
speed to be adjusted without affecting the current preset. An automatic 5-second high-speed
"kick start" on startup minimizes the possibility of fan motor stall. Custom engraved faceplates may also be ordered for this control.
INSTALLATION
Installation Guidelines
1.
All fan controls require a neutral connection.
2.
Strap fan controls mount individually or ganged together and are supplied without
faceplates. They accept Strand Environ 3 single and multi-gang faceplates or standard
decorator-style faceplates by others. Faceplates are not included with Strap fan controls
and must be ordered separately. Heatsink devices cannot be ganged with Strap devices.
3.
Heatsink fan controls incorporate low-profile heatsinks and are supplied with single-gang
faceplates. Multi-gang faceplates are also available. Heatsink devices mount side-by-side
and do not need to be derated. Heatsink devices cannot be ganged with Strap devices.
4.
Fan controls may be fed individually or in groups, regardless of phase.
5.
DO NOT connect Environ 3 dimmers to Ground Fault Interrupt (GFI) or Ground Fault
Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) circuit breakers.

Installing Fan Control
CAUTION: Before any electrical work is performed, disconnect power at the
circuit breaker or remove the fuse to avoid shock or damage to the unit.
Step 1. If you are replacing an existing device with a fan control:
a. Remove faceplate from existing device
b. Unscrew and pull device out of wallbox.
c. Disconnect wires from device. Using a voltage tester, identify and mark the
"hot" and the "load" wires connected to the device.
Step 2. If using Environ 3 faceplate (sold separately) before connecting any wires, be sure
that Environ 3 faceplate mounting adapter plate is behind device with alignment
tabs facing forward. Tabs should rest within centering holes of aluminum mounting
strap.
Step 3. Be sure fan control is in "System Off" position by firmly pressing bottom of device
until it snaps into place and the "System Off" label at the top of device is exposed.
Step 4. Connect the fan control wires to the wallbox wires as follows:
a. Black to Hot (120VAC Source)
b. White to Neutral *

Installation & Operation Guide
Adjusting Fan Control
For fans equipped with built-in variable speed devices, these devices must be set at their
MAXIMUM SPEED for proper operation. Adjustments to their settings must only be made
with fan control in HIGH position. Follow these steps:
a. Adjust fan control to HIGH and turn on.
b. Adjust fan’s built-in control to maximum speed.
c. Adjust fan control to lowest speed setting.
d. Check fan for minimum speed to ensure fan stall does not occur.
e. If further adjustment is required, repeat steps a – d.
After installing fan control and setting fan motor to its highest speed, discontinue use of fan’s
pull chain.
Setting the Preset
After installation of the fan control, set the preset speed as follows:
Step 1. Adjust fan control to the desired speed (low, medium or high).
Step 2. Press the Set button (Figure 4).
Programming Presets
After you have completed installation of all of the Environ 3 devices, and have energized the
system, programming of each preset can be performed (low, medium, high, off).
Step 1. Tap the preset button (ON, A, B, C, D) on the Environ 3 Master that you wish to
program (Figure 3).
Step 2. Adjust the fan control to the desired speed.
Step 3. Press the Set button.
Step 4. Repeat steps 1–3 until all presets have been programmed.
Note: Fan controls may be programmed off for the "ON" preset.

OPERATION
Operate the fan control device as follows. (Refer to Figure 4 below.)
•
To turn fan on (to its preset level), tap top of rocker.
•
A second tap of the top rocker turns fan on to high speed.
•
To adjust fan speed, press and hold top or bottom of rocker until desired speed is
reached, then release.
•
To turn fan off, tap the bottom of the rocker.
•
Two quick taps of the top rocker will turn the fan on to high speed.
•
LEDs on the fan control indicate status.
- Red LED is on when fan control is off, to locate fan control when room is dark.
- As many as three green LEDs may be illuminated at any given time.
- The bright green LED indicates the current speed of the control.
- The medium green LED indicates the preset speed of the current preset.
- The dim green LED indicates the preset speed of the ON preset.
Note: Fan controls DO NOT respond to raise/lower commands from masters on the purple
wire.
Note: Operation of the fan control from a 3-way remote will be identical to the local controls.
This remains true even if the ON preset is programmed to be OFF.
