The show has truly become a national event, bringing in almost 11,000 attendees last year and an expanded presence of national manufacturers. From an attendees’ perspective, the biggest change this show is probably our agreement with the Mart to once again provide free parking. The future of the hobby requires us to work tirelessly to create new hobbyists, most of whom are youngsters and families that have had little exposure to the hobby previously. Our show is a fantastic opportunity to show all aspects of the hobby and encourage their participation. We try to accomplish this by offering a slate of kids activities, from hands-on play to building a layout over the course of the show. Additionally, we give away a train set every hour. Please check out our how-to clinics to learn new modeling skills; the Company Store to bring home a reminder of the show; the fabulous operating layouts for inspiration and the chance to join one of these great organizations; the manufacturer booths to see the latest in modeling, and, of course, our vendors to take some treasures home. If you’re here with children, make sure to visit the kid’s corner, the folks from Youth in Model Railroading and the Boy Scouts. If you’re a scout, you can earn the Railroading Merit Badge on site. Maybe, you’ll even win a train set to get started! The show is presented through the work of a large number of volunteers. I thank these folks for their herculean efforts. If you have an interest in helping us, talk with one of our volunteers at the Information Desk. Have fun! Jim Marski, Show Director Need information? Visit the Information Desk, and a volunteer will be happy to point you in the right direction. Also, a floor plan of the show is listed in the middle of this program to help guide the way. Rocky Mountain Train Show 2016 • Page 5 New Layouts We have a couple of great new displays at the show! First, celebrating the real thing's 60th anniversary, is an absolutely fabulous 8 x 20 animated layout of DISNEYLAND. This one is worth coming to show just to see it! As it's a onetime visitor, don't miss seeing it in the northwest corner of Expo 2. It is also a great companion to our Disneyland Shuco Monorail layout. The next visiting layout is an award-winning 10 x 40 HOn3 layout brought to the show by the New Mexico Narrow Gauge Modular Club. You'll find this one in the southwest corner of Expo 3. The last new layout for the show is the 12 x 40 Slick-X modular layout. Make sure you visit their layout in our new layout space on track L, an expansion to the east of our previous layout space. Rocky Mountain Train Show History The Rocky Mountain Train Show is held twice a year in Denver, Colorado- the first week in March and the second week in December. At 120,000 square feet and March attendance in the 11,000 range, it is the largest show west of the Mississippi. The roots of the show began 39 years ago when the Rocky Mountain Division of the Train Collectors Association announced their first “Holiday Meet” to be held Thanksgiving weekend, 1976. The Rocky Mountain Division was the first TCA Division to welcome the public to our shows in the early 1980s. The show grew to attendance of approximately 2,500, and then, as with many shows, began a decline that saw attendance shrink to approximately 1,200. In 2009, the club formed a committee to look at solutions to revitalize the show. The decision was to “bet the farm” on moving the show to a world class exhibition facility, The Denver Mart. To back up this new show, it was determined that we would need to invest in an extensive advertising program. As the show started to grow, we reinvested all profits in additional advertising, which brought additional attendance gains. With stellar manufacturer attendance including Bachmann, Bar Mills, Blackstone Models, Broadway Limited, Daylight Sales, Manufacturer Photo courtesy Cowcatcher Magazine Evan Designs, Evergreen Hill Designs, ExactRail, Fun & Games, Intermountain Railway, Kadee, Kato, LGB, Lunde Studios, Marklin, Missouri Locomotive, Motrak Models, NCE, North American Railcar, Scenic Express, SoundTraxx, Sundance Marketing, Trainz, Trix, Tutweiler Studios and Weathering Solutions we have met our Clinics and presentations highlight this year’s show We are proud to have our good friend, Ed Dickens, Union Pacific’s Senior Manager- Heritage Operations, at the show on Saturday morning to give a presentation 2016 Rocky Mountain Train Show Manufacturers on the status of UP steam power. Ed’s presentations always generate a full house and he graciously answers questions from our attendees. The presentation will be held in Expo 1, Aisle K at 11 a.m. The show also features numerous clinics covering modeling skills and railroad history over the course of the show. The up-todate clinic schedule is available on the video screen at the information booth or online at www.
