Tanya Culver’s tan Ford was stuck in the roadway on an incline in the area of Crooked Lake and Cook Avenue, Deputies discovered. When she attempted to get out of the vehicle to push it, one of her two minor children, who were also in the vehicle, accidentally put the car in reverse and it rolled over Culver, causing injuries to her arm and multiple lacerations. The accident happened around 7 a.m., Deputies said. The vehicle then rolled into the lake. It was pulled out by emergency personnel. After a lengthy discussion on the deteriorating condition of the roads, the board voted to ask township residents to approve three mills for ten years and have the ballot wording composed for approval before the deadline at the end of July. The nine years of road repair outlined in a Tanya Culver study last year would cost $413,774 per year. The ment. millage would raise about The Clare County $286,000 of those funds. From that simple start the event started to grow by leaps and bounds. The Clare Retailers even got into the act and convinced the Clare County Transit to run shuttle busses from the city to the Herrick Road event. Just a few years ago it had grown into a huge weekend event featuring 400 to 500 vendors and bringing thousands to the community. It was so big, two events were held every year, on the third weekend of May and again on Labor Day weekend. Finally John Henry split part of the event off to the Yoder Brothers Auctioneers, LeRoy and Willis Yoder. They now hold the massive 300 plus horse auction at the Isabella County Fairgrounds. The horse auction, featuring all Standard bred animals is held three times during the year. Check with the Clare Chamber for dates and times (989-3862442). Amish craft show this weekend By Pat Maurer Correspondent PRSRT STD U.S. Postage PAID Clare, MI Permit #19 If crafts and quilts are your thing, Amish quilts and crafts are known for quality and beautiful work all over the United States. You can find some of the very best right here. Clare is the home of one of the largest consignment sales in the Midwest and a semi-annual quilt auction that can’t be beat. This weekend – May 16 and 17 –is 30th anniversary of the annual sale and auction at the farm of John Henry Yoder on Herrick Road just four miles east of Clare. To celebrate the annual event, the Michigan Steam Railroading Institute will be bringing a passenger train to Clare on Saturday. The passengers, coming especially to visit the Amish Craft Show and Quilt Auction event, will arrive in Clare at the new depot site at 11:30 a.m. and depart for the trip back to Owosso at 5 p.m. Amish market founder John Henry Yoder moved to the area in 1981 from Homes County, Ohio. He and his family were part of one of the first Amish settlements in the area. In 1984 he started the Amish Consignment Auction and Flea Market on his nounced. Over 500 pieces of farm machinery and equipment and much more are auctioned at that event. John Henry and family still have the quilts, flea market and craft show, and it is still held on Friday and Saturday of the third weekend in May and on the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day. Shuttle busses will be busy ferrying visitors to the huge sale site. These days there are more than 600 booths of crafts, handmade items and made-in-the-area farm products, more than one person can visit in a long day. About 300 handmade quilts from all over the United States are also auctioned off, many Amish made. The event brings from 15,000 to 20,000 visitors to Clare each time it is held. On Friday quilt tops, wall hangings, carpets, rugs and other hand quilted small items are auctioned. On Saturday it is all beautiful quilts on the auction block. Recently a top selling quilt went for about $4,000, Norm said. The Clare County Transit is still offering rides from Clare to the event. In order to make special events in Clare, like the Amish Auction and the train coming into the station, more convenient to increase in the gasoline tax which added $500,000 to our budget for roads. We had money to pay 25 percent on local road projects and 50 percent on major roads then. We don’t have that now. Since that time, funding has been declining and costs have gone up. We have lost the $500,000 and more. Our fleet of 34 trucks is now down to 17. We barely have enough to maintain the roads now.” He said several proposals in the legislature could increase their State funding, but “We probably won’t see any of that money until 2016.” Without State funds, the improvement of roads is falling to the townships, he said. Grant Township does have just over $200,000 set aside for road repairs this year. According to a release from the Clare County Sheriff’s Department, Deputies received the call around 2 p.m. about an unconscious man in the river in Summerfield Township. The incident happened in the northwest part of the township near the border of Winterfield and Summerfield Townships, off Muskegon Road on the outskirts of Temple. Undersheriff Dwayne Miedzianowski said Vanbuskirk was seen walking along the railroad tracks. Witnesses found him in the river. “It appears he fell in,” Miedzianowski said. They reported that the five Kayakers pulled Vanbuskirk out of the river and onto the riverbank and called Central Dispatch. Vanbuskirk was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center – Clare. He received treatment there and was released, Deputies said. The cause of Vanbuskirk’s fall into the river was not released. “The cause will be determined by medical staff,” Miedzianowski said. Sheriff John Wilson said he wants to commend the five kayakers: Jason Tuttle of Adrian, Timothy Dudley of Imlay City, Brandon Taylor, Matthew Pinkard and Casey Deere of Tecumseh for their heroic effort in helping Vanbuskirk. The book is a year-long effort by former classmates of Harrison High School, Angela Kellogg, Support Services Librarian at Harrison District Library. Angela Kellogg, support services librarian at the Harrison District Library and Cody Beemer, owner of Beemer’s Sand and Gravel. Cody is a fourth generation Harrison resident who traces his family to the pioneering days of the community and a life-long student of Harrison and Michigan history. Angela’s parents retired to Harrison when she was a teenager from the downriver area south of Detroit. She now manages the Harrison District Library’s local history collection. The pictorial history they have compiled together represents the best photographs, facts and tales from those who have preserved Harrison history including the Beemer/Bailey family collections, the Harrison District Library, and the Clare County Historical Society. In addition, photos, postcards and other materials were purchased from the internet, eBay and/or borrowed from family members Grant seeks road millage dents and in the Creekside Subdivision. The proposed extension would be from Maple Grove Road north to Harrison Avenue. DTE Energy Marketing Specialist Suresh Bhargava was at the meeting to explain the project. He outlined the savings for residents who make the switch from propane and said the company has contracted with Roese Contracting Company of Kawkawlin to begin laying pipe between June 1 and June 15. “We have committed to this project,” he said. He estimated the pipe would be installed by August 15 and the residences hooked up by October or sooner, and outlined the cost to convert to the less expensive natural gas supply, which is 98 percent domestic. He said they already have over half of the needed 57 homeowners committed to the change. Vern Hartman of Roese was also on hand to answer questions from the audience. Other business at the meeting included: *Approval of the purchase of an Assessing Program software upgrade from BSA for a cost of $3,555. *Adoption of a resolution to decline/refuse the purchase of Public Act 123 foreclosed properties. *Approval of the renewal of an Equalization contract for $2.410 per year, plus expenses for mailing, etc. *Approval of monthly bills totaling $12,527.41. Fourth Street Clare, Michigan 48617 Phone; 989-386-4414 We are moving forward thanks to all the help and love from this community. I have to tell you that being on the receiving end of the out pouring of love in this community is very overwhelming. We have had a very hard time taking donations because we have always been on the other side of something like this. You can’t even imagine how heavy this weighs on someone; the reality of every memory made in the house you lived in for the last 23 years is just that, a memory. We have them imbedded in our minds and they will be with us forever, not even an evil horrible fire like this can take that away from a person. What I will share with you and want you to remember from our ordeal is, take many good memory pictures with your mind. GOD gave us an amazing life camera to keep memories in. Make sure you put good memories in that camera, and keep the bad ones from even ever being put there. We found many of photo’s that were able to be saved. They are so precious to all of us, especially if we think they were destroyed. To all the firemen that were involved in this. You all went out of your way to save those memories we have. The general public will never know the feeling of going into a burning structure that you have no idea of the layout, in total blindness due to the intense smoke that filled the house. I have often heard some say, “why don’t they just let it burn to the ground, it would be easier to clean up”. I myself have thought that at many of structure fires I have been at over the last 25 years. I know there are many reasons that you try to stop a fire and extinguish it, but now we know the most important one coming from the family who lost it. That is to save something even little for the family that lived there to have to hold onto for their memories. Even though it’s considered a total loss, we still can look at what is there and remember. Firemen and women, you are a unique bread of individuals for what you do for nothing more than the very little pay you do receive, and all the hours of training you go through. You are all a true example of giving back to your community. To all of my employees that came to my aid that day, thank you from all of the Wilson’s. You all went out of your way to help in any way you could. Thanks to Undersheriff Miedzianowski for not only helping my family, but our neighbor Sharon Curtis. Thanks to Lori Ware for going out of her way to also help Sharon who had no family or home to go to. Sharon’s home was damage to the point she wasn’t able to stay in it and had to be moved. Again, Thank you to All who have helped, prayed, and kept us in your thoughts. The Village Council discussed two proposals for the work; one from Village Engineering Firm Wade Trim for $20,400 over 12 months, and one from McKenna Associates Community Planning and Design of Northville, MI for $22,000 over seven months. An initial motion to accept the Wade Trip proposal by Council member Elton Marshall had no second. A second motion by Joe Manley to approve the Wade Trim proposal with feasibility study costs of $6,500 was MMR receives accreditation Mobile Medical Response, providing ambulance service in 13 mid and northern Michigan counties has received reaccreditation status from both the Commission on the Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) and the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (IAED). CAAS is an independent Commission that established a comprehensive series of standards for the ambulance service industry. CAAS accreditation signifies that a service has met the “gold standard” determined by the ambulance industry to be essential in a modern emergency medical services provider. These standards often exceed those established by state or local regulation. The CAAS standards are designed to increase operational efficiency and clinical quality, while decreasing risk and liability to the organization. The process includes a comprehensive self-assessment and an independent external review of the EMS organization. This independent process provides verification to local government, the medical community and community members at large that quality care is provided to the community. MMR received a zero deficiencies rating with a perfect score and a full three-year accreditation term. There are approximately 150 agencies in the United States that are accredited by CAAS. According to CAAS, “The applicant service desiring to become accredited should do so with the knowledge that it will fall into a class that has more to prove every day, rather than less. That is, the conferment of a Certificate of Accreditation is not justification to rest on that laurel, but to prove at all times that such recognition is warranted.” voted down with Village President Steve Grim, Council member Marshall and Joe Manley voting yes and Council members Gina Hamilton, James Conlay, Vicky Gunden and Joe Colosky voting no. The third motion, to approve the McKenna proposal with the feasibility study costs at $3,000 of the total proposal was approved 5 to 2 with Manley and Grim voting no. The feasibility study is required to qualify for a DDA through the State, said Clerk Janet Conlay. Since there was some community concern over the DDA proposal, the Village would still be able to opt out of the project if they decide to do that. She said some community members were against developing a DDA in the Village. During the COW meeting earlier the Village Council discussed the upcoming Floyd and Webber Street project. They also agreed to look at the cost for a one inch asphalt layer on Hall Street between Illinois and Floyd while getting bids for the local street project. At the regular meeting May 5, the Council approved a proposal from Medler Electric for $1,792.00 to replace 32 of the main street lights with 35 watt LED retrofit bulbs. The payback for the energy efficient bulbs is 1.65 years. Three COW motions The Clare County Review - May 16, 2014 - Page 5A were approved at the regular meeting: the first was adoption of the Rules of Procedure; the second was approval of a resolution to exempt the Village from the provisions of Public Act 152 of 2011 (the purchase of tax sale property); and the third was the appointment of Joe Manley to the Parks and Recreation Committee. Other business at the Village Council meeting included: *Approval of the Power Generation Planned Equipment Maintenance Agreement with Cummins Bridgeway LLC for lift stations 1, 2, and 3 for the amount of $2,732.74. *A discussion of mosquito control options for the Village. *A report from County Commissioner Lynn Grim. *Discussion of Hogger’s sandblasted sign estimate for $1,250 and design idea similar to the Enterprise Park sign with the Farwell Village Hall inscribed. *Estimates for cooling and heating options for the Village office, Police Post and Council room will be requested with a special meeting May 20 to review estimates. *A report that the DPW will purchase 12 trees to replace those removed earlier as approved at the last meeting. *Approval of bills totaling $26,913.66. State Rep. Kevin Cotter (left) appears with Dr. Jan Pol before the House Committee on Health Policy. Dr. Pol gave testimony in support of House Bill 5176. Dr. Pol offers testimony The House Health Policy Committee today heard testimony on a bill that would protect health care professionals from allegations of misconduct seen only on a reality television show, announced the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Kevin Cotter. “House Bill 5176 is meant to protect licensed health care professionals,” said Cotter, R-Mt. Pleasant. “Currently, people from across the country can file professional misconduct complaints against a health care professional based on what that person saw on TV, without any firsthand knowledge of misconduct.” Dr. Jan Pol is a licensed veterinarian with an office in Beal City and has a reality television show, The Incredible Dr. Pol, on Nat Geo Wild. “This is common sense,” said Dr. Pol. “We all know that not everything we see on television is how it really happens 100 percent of the time. There simply isn’t enough time to show every single step of the process or procedure. By using television editing, my viewers are given a snapshot of what life is like for a rural veterinarian. But we are just as caring and professional as any big city vet.” a s t e W u l o a o V d f ’ s o l a v i n r a C HOT BUY Queen Mattress AS LOW AS LIMIT 2 PER CUSTOMER Read stories, see photos and connect with other readers! 299 $ Choose Gel Memory Foam or Hybrid Technology - Serta makes it easy! MCEWAN, CLARE Page 6A-The Clare County Review - May 16, 2014 Viewpoints Mike’s Musings Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor Pat’s Bits & Pieces Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent Out on a ledge without a way to get in This was the week I was going to tell readers about the evils of our health care system. I had come in to work a couple of hours early to research the topic, when lo and behold, my office was locked and of course, I had no key to get in. Now I never lock my office because I fear the exact problem I was now facing. I never lock my house and I never lock my cars, so it didn’t make sense to lock my office. Last night when I left, however, I remembered the IT guy was coming to work on a computer and copier that were giving us problems. I didn’t want him rifling through proprietary information I might have in my office, so I locked it and took the key. So I thought I took the key. Come to find out I hadn’t taken the key. To add insult to injury the IT guy never showed up either. So here I was at 6:20 a.m. without a key to get into my office. I pulled out a Sam’s Club ID card. I figured I never use this card because I always shop locally. I stuck it in the door jam, wriggled it around until it was scratched, bent and broken in to two pieces. I pulled out another useless credit card with the same results. Darn, the old college credit card trick did not work in these newer doors. Next I remembered I had left my window unlatched. I figured I could possibly open the window from the adjoining office, drop down three feet to a razor thin ledge and make my way over to the unlatched window. Spiderman I might think I am in my dreams, but in reality I’m an average middleaged man. So I slip sideways through the window. I’m thinking, hmm that threefoot drop to the ledge is kind of interesting. I get both feet on the ledge hanging on to the edge of the window for my dear life. I don’t dare look down – it’s at least fifteen feet to the concrete sidewalk. I start inching my way to my office window and then start shaking uncontrollably. It finally clicked in my mind, this is not going to work. All the while, I’m thinking those that are driving by (we are on Clare’s main street) must think someone is attempting suicide. I’m waiting to hear sirens. Someone surely would call the police. I best abort this effort and return to safety. So I did. There was a slight problem getting there, however. I didn’t take into account, that it’s a whole lot easier dropping down three feet than pulling myself up three feet, particularly when there was very little to hang on to. Now I was shaking, and about to cry. How was I going to do this without slipping and falling to my Just Thinking Morels, and babes in the wood death, or at least to several broken bones? By the grace of God, and I was praying incessantly, I managed. I carefully lifted my body up, clinging nervously on to the window latch, bumping my head against concrete and glass as I crawled through the wafer thin window. I made it back to safety. After scolding myself for the act of stupidity, it was now 7 a.m., and I thought possibly I could reach our landlord and he would certainly have an extra key. I called he answered and promised to look and call right back. He called back and said “I have good news and I have bad news, what do you want to hear first? I always say give me the bad. He said he didn’t have a key. He never did tell me the good news. So I hit another dead end. After a great deal of thought an epiphany came to me. Duh, my inner self asked, why don’t you call a locksmith dummy? So I did just that, and Gilboe’s was here in 30-minutes, picked the lock in five minutes, and whammo, I’m now writing this column. I’m still shaking like a leaf. My stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Don’t. Young animals that appear abandoned are not usually alone. The mother may be hiding nearby and unless the youngster is obviously injured, or brought home by one of your own pets, they shouldn’t be touched or removed from their natural environment. The Department of Natural Resources wildlife experts cite a variety of problems when people bring wild babies home in what they consider an act of mercy. They can carry serious diseases like distemper and rabies. It is also very difficult for those animals to survive when they are released back into the wild after being raised by humans. Wild animals just don’t make good pets. In some cases of endangered species and game animals like deer, it is illegal to bring them home. If you do find an obviously injured animal, contact your local animal control agency or the Department of Natural Resources office. There are authorized agencies in Michigan that specialize in first aid and rehabilitation services for wild animals. Things are beginning bloom again all over the area. Guess they should be since May is now half over already. You know what that means… from here until July will only seem like a week or so. From here to September first, only a month. It doesn’t seem fair that January, February, March, and yes even April this year, all seem to last for six months, while May, June and July only last about three weeks. Summertime, which is nearly here, means fast time. I think May is my favorite month of all. It really is the beginning of things and it ends up with the bonus of a three-day holiday! It is also the beginning of our camping season, and despite the “war of the mice” I wrote about last week, I am anxious to go up to the camper again – hopefully for some sunny nice days this time! May is cool breezes and warm sunshine. It is the scent of green things growing and lilacs in bloom. It is the taste of fresh chives, morels and wild asparagus. It is lacy new leaves and the delicate purple faces of wild violets next to bright yellow dandelions blooming in the impossibly green grass. May is newly awakened bumblebees and the return of the hummingbirds, baby birds cheeping, frogs peeping in the dark and sometimes a glimpse of wild babies in the woods. This is the time of year when you can’t wait to get outside, even if it is just to go for a walk. Superintendent’s Corner By Dr. Ray Augenstein By Clare Superintendent Doniel Pummell A letter to Mom Dear Mom, I’m not one to write letters, and it has been a long time since I wrote one, but I want to share with you some of the thoughts I have been having lately. I know its mother’s day and especially at this time I’m thinking of you. I want to thank you first of all for loving me. You loved me when I was bad and when I was good. I remember the time, I pulled up all the onion sets in the garden when I was 3 years old. Daddy was gone to war, and you called it your Victory Garden. You dusted my pants, and then held me on your lap and rocked me as I cried. I remember when we didn’t have anything to eat, and miraculously sandwiches appeared on the table before me and my brothers. I later found out that you went to the neighbors to borrow some bread but they weren’t home. So you helped yourself to enough to feed your children. Thank you for the songs you sang during the night hours as we were going to sleep. The boogie man was always afraid to come around when Mama sang her songs of faith. I remember the tears of loneliness, you tried to hide from us when you sat in your chair mending clothes, while daddy was away in the Philippians fighting the war. You never said if he came home but always told us that daddy would take care of it when he came home. I remember the confidence you instilled in us as we set out to school for the first time. You led us to the door and turned us over to a strange lady that we would see every day as she taught us our ABC’s. You told us you would be there when school got over. What a lesson that we could count on, Mama would always be there. You were always there when I got hurt, when I was sick, or just needed a hug. You were there when I faced diffi- Spring, and “Morel mania” has hit the area and for the past two weeks I have been seeing lots of comments on Facebook about those lucky people finding grocery bags full of mushrooms. We were jealous because we usually find at least some of those elusive, delicious little fungi right here in the yard – enough for a meal or two anyway. And Jack was out looking for them, without much luck at all. We even perused the woods over at Terry and Lisa’s on Mother’s Day, thinking we would find some there. No luck unfortunately. Then this week, they suddenly decided to pop up again and Jack, who is excellent at spotting them, found a bunch out in the back yard. After our little jaunt on Sunday, Lisa must have caught the bug too, because when she saw his find, she had to go out looking for more – and she did find three that he either missed or that popped up overnight. Now we keep checking for more every day, at least when it isn’t raining… One comment I noticed on Facebook had a picture of a newborn fawn someone had spied while they were out mushroom hunting. So the babies are arriving again. They are so adorable, that if you see one, you might be tempted to just pick it up and bring it home. Just Teach the Kids! “Every excuse I ever heard made perfect sense to the person who made it.” ― Dr. Daniel T. Drubin cult decisions, and needed advice. I didn’t always take it but knowing that I could turn to you meant a lot. You never laughed at me, or put me down, but you encouraged me and helped me to realize that I could do whatever I put my mind to. I remember the day you left us. I knew somehow that you were gone before I got the news from my brother. I felt the vacuum left from your departing. I have a million things I want to talk to you about. A million questions I need answered. a million things I want to tell you and say to you, that I just never got around to saying. But most of all I just want to say I love you, and thank you for being my Mama. Happy mother’s day in Heaven. Do you know what your kids are learning? I would say that most parents know “how” their kids are doing related grades, and the subjects kids are studying. However it is more difficult as parents to know “what” specifically our kids are learning. As a trained teacher, I took my first teaching job in 1992 teaching 7th grade science and 8th grade math. At that time, we did not have Common Core or Michigan Merit Curriculum. Lucky for me I had an excellent student teaching supervisor. Pam Packard, was Vice President of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and let me tell you, she made sure that as her student teacher I knew ALL of the State Standards for math! My point being… Pam was a great mentor for me. She was my ticket to doing what was right for kids. Today, we have many excellent and dedi- cated teachers that KNOW what is right and great for kids. Each and every day they are working to reach and teach our children. So, what is the concern? This is my 22nd year in education. I know many with 30-40 years in the profession. Over this time span, I have seen MANY changes to the curriculum requirements. Some have been positive and some not so much, in my professional opinion. What do I consider to be the hallmarks of great teaching and learning…? All students need to be great readers, communicators, problem solvers, team players and need to value people our planet and our country! This is just basic. In addition, they should be excited to set goals, dream and develop and practice respect and a great work ethic. Having shared what I think… I will add what worries me. Schools are required to do what is dictated by the Michigan Department of Education, MDE, and the laws of the State and Federal Governments. Lately these three areas have not all been on the same page. MDE will want one thing and the Legislators will want another. Meanwhile, one or both might be in conflict with the Feds. While all of this is happening, the school sits in limbo. One of the hot topics related to this kind of issue is testing, specifically MEAP. This testing has been around for years, even though it has changed many times in format etc. Presently, MDE and the State Legislature are not in agreement as to what the test should be for next year. Meanwhile, school still goes on, and we have no idea what the test will be; yet we are accountable. Teacher and administrator evaluations and student success all depends on the outcome of one test for which our Letters state leaders CANNOT find consensus. Sure makes for an uncomfortable feeling. All of that being said, at Clare Public Schools we will “JUST TEACH THE KIDS!” We have the people and the programs to prepare our students for anything that the state decides! Look at all of our successful graduates that now live here in Clare and all over the world! One test did not determine their lives, no sir. We all know that whenever “they” get this test decided we want our Clare kids to knock it out of the park! But until they do… We will “JUST TEACH THE KIDS!” Like we always do! “The right thing to do and the hard thing to do are usually the same.” ― Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free Promises were made - but they’re not being kept Dear Editor: It’s an “integrity” kinda Friday…this really pisses me off!!…promises were made and are not being kept!!…we tell our young (and not so young) men and women that if they will grab a rifle, leave their families behind and put themselves in harm’s way we will take care of any medical needs they have because of their service…pretty simple deal; not too difficult for even the dimmest amongst us to grasp…the trouble is, they did their part –they kept up their end of the deal – but OUR bureaucrats are inept or unwilling to make good on the promise…maybe you’ve seen in the news that the VA Medical system is under investigation…in this instance people may have died just because they can’t get an appointment… I will grant that it is not all VA Centers, it is not all VA employees, it is not all VA cases…but it is enough to qualify as a national disgrace…last fall we hosted a golf outing to raise funds for (among other Vet needs) the Michigan Patriot Guard…the few thousand we raised wasn’t enough to solve a problem but it helped…you know what the Michigan Patriot Guard does with those funds?...they buy prostheses for Vets that have lost limbs; they bridge the gap in a life that has been torn apart by war until the government decides to get its ass in gear and live up to its promise…. At the time of last year’s golf outing the average wait time to get a replacement limb was 22 months!!...how would you like to sit around on a stump for 2 years while some over paid bureaucrat mulled over your need?... and “We the People” tolerate this BS!!...this is Obama’s problem! This is Bush’s problem!!...this has been going on for well over a decade; all of us in groups like the American Legion have been aware for years…that’s why we have golf outings, benefits, bike runs and whatever else we can think to raise a buck to help… we shouldn’t’ have to do any of that!!... We are proud to do it but it should be unnecessary… we pay our taxes and so do you!! we do so in good faith expecting our representatives to “keep the faith” with those in need ... in this area I give both Presidents Bush & Obama an “F”…if you read this as political then you miss the point and are tainted beyond hope…this isn’t a political rant, it is an embarrassed apology to our troops for the shabby way we treat them after they have had our backs around the world…”a promise made is a debt unpaid”… maybe that should be on our currency instead of “e pluribus Unum” – a statement suggesting that we are all in this together… I bet it doesn’t feel that way to someone who sacrificed so much (and risked it all) and is now treated like another of our “throwaway” citizens…I love my country!!...I just want us all to keep our promises made to those who stood on the wall so we could walk the streets in peace and safety…we can ignore this breech or we can fix it – in the meantime many of us will do what we can to fill in the gap…the ducks on pond make no creed that they can’t live up to… and Mother Parker sheds a tear in her brew when she sees those that need so much and are getting so little!! PS –if you want to help, we still have openings in our 70th D-Day Anniversary Golf Outing on June 06; or sponsor a hole at the outing for only $20…I PROMISE that every dollar raised is spent on Vet programs & needs!! Our tee shots take turns going to opposite sides of the fairway. Let’s look at some fixes to this common problem. The first thing you should consider when the drives are crooked is hitting a 3 wood or hybrid instead of the driver. The driver is fun to hit far but is also the most difficult club to control. The shorter, more lofted clubs are easier to control and hit in the fairway. You will have to decide whether it is worth trading some distance for accuracy. Check your setup. Are you lined up properly or are your feet and shoulders pointing far to the right of where you are aiming? Your feet, hips, and shoulders should all be parallel left to the target. Use alignment rods or clubs on the ground on the range to help you aim and then carry this fundamental over to the course. Check your grip also. Setting your hands on the club so that your V’s point to your chin will lead to missing shots to the right (right handers) or over correcting and pulling shots. The V’s created by the gap between your thumb and pointer finger should point between your chin and right shoulder. Swing in tempo. I see a lot of quick swings early in the season. The overly quick swing can lead to blocked shots to the right and hooks left. Finding the right tempo for you can be just as important as a great setup or perfect mechanics. Army golf can be a very frustrating way to play. Start hitting fairways and you will find the game becomes much more enjoyable. scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch. The designs were reviewed by the members of the Recovery Court team, which includes judges, prosecutors, law enforcement, and probation and treatment staffs from both Clare and Gladwin counties. The design submitted by Ethan Davis, a CTE student from Coleman High School was selected. The design was presented to Judge Joshua Farrell, the presiding judge of the Recovery Court in a ceremony in the 80th District Court at Harrison on April 23. Ethan has entered his design in a statewide competition with the Michigan Industrial Education Society (MITES). The Graphic Arts program is one of nine CTE programs offered through the Clare-Gladwin Career Center to students from Beaverton, Clare, Farwell, Gladwin, Harrison, and Coleman High Schools. The students learn about the various aspects and careers in the graphics and printing Like us on Facebook Read stories, see photos and connect with other readers! industries. They spend half of their school day in the CTE program and the other half in their home high school. The Recovery Court, which took its first participant in July of 2012, is aimed at defendants who have been charged with substance abuse offenses or which display substance abuse as an underlying factor in other offenses. The four phase program is designed to last eighteen to twenty-four months. In the first two phases, participants are required to attend Recovery Court sessions biweekly and to report to their probation officer on the “off” weeks; to submit to frequent alcohol and drug testing; to attend at 12-step meetings and substance abuse counseling, to complete community service. Requirements in the last two phases may be reduced by the Court. Prior to graduation, all fines and costs, including a separate Recovery Court fee must be paid. Currently the Court has over twenty participants at various phases in the two counties. The Court has been funded thus far by State Court Administrative Office grants for startup, implementation and continuation. In addition to the grant funds, both Clare and Gladwin counties have contributed funds to supplement the Court. The drama department is just one of many fine arts offered at Farwell. Here Sierra Jones, Charles Skipworth and Tristan Shimmons show off their acting skills FHS fine arts has busy week $7300 raised for BBBS Mid-Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake This year’s Bowl for Kids Sake was a Clare vs. Gladwin County Challenge to see which county could raise the most dollars and it was a success! Over $7300 was raised at Clare Gateway Lanes and Gladwin Meadowlanes. It was a lot of fun and it is all about the kids. Even two teams of students from the high school bowling teams sponsored by Superior Title and Christy Van Tiem from Gladwin, came to bowl in the event. While Clare County won the competition between the counties because they raised the most dollars, the real winners are the children in our local communities that are able to benefit from a Big Brother or Big Sister. All funds raised here, stay within the two counties of Clare and Gladwin to serve our local children. Typically this is when students are awarded for their accomplishments over the past school year. However, this year the Career Center added a new award. During the past few years, the Career Center has been attempting to improve the students’ learning by finding them job placements. This allows the students to take what they have learned in the classroom and transform that into a hands on experience in a local business. “We have been really lucky to have a few different businesses allow our students come in and work for them the past couple of years,” commented DJ Newman, Career Center Placement Coordinator. “Not only is it a great experience for our students to get hands on learning, we are hoping to get these local businesses people that they can hire from these placement experiences.” This year, the Career Center decided to give back to the local businesses by selecting a business as “Placement of the Year.” This year’s recipient was the Clare County Prosecutor’s Office. The Career Center has been attempting to get local placements for the criminal justice students for several years. A few years ago, Clare County Prosecutor, Michelle Ambrozaitis, was approached about taking on select students that wanted to go into the field and about the opportunity to job shadow around her department. “Michelle and her staff have been great for our students. They have really worked with our students by showing them what is required of them, allowing them to participate and work in their office, and giving them great career advice, “ said DJ Newman. The following businesses accepted students for the 9 programs that we offer.
