In today's modern society there is a general increase in the levels
of background noises that can be expected in a domestic
environment when compared with the past. The evolvement of ever
increasing high fidelity systems and associated power outputs, TV,
Satellite and Radio, coupled to noise from traffic such as
automobiles, trains and aircraft means that unwanted noise is on
the increase.
New building materials and associated construction methods are
altering the way in which new properties are manufactured. There
is a move towards breathable membranes for roofs; these replace
traditional bitumen coated roofing felt and negate the need to
provide ventilated eaves to roofs.
This additional noise has increased stress levels which ultimately
results in poor health and fatigue. The end result is loss of revenue
to industry through absence. Thus, the Government has
implemented changes to the building regulations to ensure that a
reasonable amount of attenuation can be expected between
partition walls and ceilings not only between separate dwellings but
also noise derived from within an individual residential area.
The special gaskets incorporated into the Fireguard design ensure
that the criteria is met.
The material allows water vapour to permeate from the roof area
out to the surrounding environment but remains impervious to
external moisture. The material is much lighter and allows a roof
to be completed at ground level and lifted into position on the
dwelling creating a water tight environment under which
construction can continue. There is no longer a need to provide
ventilated eaves.
For this reason the amount of moisture that can enter a cold roof
void must be controlled; thus anything which punctures the seal
between the cold roof area and dwelling area must be considered.
Light fittings and loft hatches are good examples of intrusions into
the roof area that can facilitate the passage of moisture.
BS5250 which is referenced in Part C stipulates the permitted air
flow per luminaire (0.06m3/Hr/m2 at a pressure of 2 pascals) for
which Part L defines the testing criteria and total building
envelope performance. The requirements are very demanding and
care is needed to ensure compliance.
Fireguard downlighters have been designed with special seals to
inhibit the flow of air & moisture through the fitting as required by
Part C of the building regulations. This has been widely enforced
from the 1st of July 2005.

Part B Fire safety
The 2006 revision to Part L has added considerable onus onto
lighting installations with a far more defined requirement for energy
conservation. There is now a need for 1 in 4 downlights to be
energy efficient. Where downlights are used in abundance the need
to find suitable locations for energy efficient luminaries becomes
more challenging. Several options are available including the
FireGuard Low Energy which is suitable for use along the
communication routes and utility rooms. Another option is to have
secondary energy compliant wall lights which can be switched
separately from the main lights, once the compact fluorescent
lamps are up to full brightness the main lights can be switched off.
The purpose of Part B is to ensure that building structures provide
adequate safety protection to personnel in the event of an
emergency evacuation of the structure/complex. The regulation has
been a legal requirement since 1987.
The level of resistance required is proportional to the risk involved
and the location of adjacent dwellings. For the domestic market 30
or 60 minutes is normal however under extreme conditions 90
minutes is required.

Building Regulations Document B determines the ceiling type that is required depending on the type of building
under construction and associated usage. The ceiling types are designed to provide protection to the floor above in
the case of a fire for a duration as specified by the document. Using JCC’s Fireguard downlights ensures that this
specification is maintained even when downlights are installed in the ceiling.

I-Joist Timber Systems
For 30 and 60 minute fire ceilings
Timber I-Joist systems offer the modern builder an alternative to solid beam ceiling constructions. These products
are manufactured from laminating layers of wood together to produce I-Joists. This makes them lighter and easier
to manoeuvre together with the benefit of being able to span greater widths without undue flex in the floor system.
However, as these timbers are thinner there is much less material to resist the passage of fire and thus luminaires
that are suitable for solid timber floor constructions are not necessarily suitable for I-Joist. Thus JCC Lighting has
spent considerable resources working in conjunction with BRE and Chiltern Fire International to ensure their
luminaires are suitable for the majority of I-Joist floor systems.

Fireguard low energy uses the latest in CFL lamp technology. The new 11W
lamp is approximately 50mm in diameter and therefore resembles the

integral reflector and the light output softened by a diffusing front lens.

Fireguard Low Energy.
Low energy lighting
The new edition of the building regulations, Document
L, requires the developer to meet services and building
criteria in order to minimise carbon dioxide emissions
caused by the usage of excess energy and heat loses.
To achieve the desired Target Emission Rate (TER) as
scheduled within the document, internal low energy
lighting points will be expected at a ratio of one per
every four fixed light fittings, or at least one per 25m2
dwelling floor area excluding garages, whichever is
the greater.
Of particular note to lighting installers are the sections
concerning low energy lighting and the air permeability
of dwellings (Parts 42 & 52 respectively).
It is indicated that a reasonable provision would be to
install these points in the most frequented locations in
the dwelling, such as hall, stairs and landing, as
suggested in Document GIL20.
Modern small halogen downlights, whilst being highly
desirable in many respects are not energy efficient
enough on their own to meet the new requirements.

Air permeability
New Dimmable version
Dwellings will be tested for air permeability and also for
thermal loses through the fabric of the building. It is
essential to have downlights that do not contribute to
these factors and maintain the air-tightness of the
location into which they are installed.
JCC has collaborated with Megaman to bring you a
compact fluorescent lamp that can easily be used with
existing home dimmer switches. The 11watt lamp
supplied has a colour rendition of Warm White
(3000K) to suit most home applications.
This is especially important with ceilings
below cold loft spaces.
JCC offers new user-friendly technology
for the home.
JCC have paid particular attention to the air-tightness of
Fireguard downlights. Extensive testing has shown that
loses are virtually negligible. Fireguard can therefore be
used with complete confidence. Test results are given
on pages 16 & 17.
Meeting the demand for dimmable energy saving
lighting solutions. The newly developed 11Watt GU10
uses smart integrated electronics to produce a smooth
dimming range without flicker. This new lamp can be
used with most leading UK domestic dimmer variants.
Dimming recommendations for the new 11Watt Megaman dimmable lamp
For the best dimming results we would recommend an electronic or digital dimmer, but we would not suggest the touch or
remote version. Due to the possibility of flicker during operation standard resistive dimmer types are also to be avoided.

IEE Wiring revision

As of 1st January 2008 the IEE wiring regulations were
revised to the 17th edition. These new changes include the
introduction of RCD protected lighting circuits in the home.

Built-in fire ceiling protection
At the heart of the Fireguard design is the integral intumescent fire barrier material that, in the event
of a fire, seals the downlight and maintains the fire rating of the ceiling.
In modern homes, ceilings can be constructed to give 30 minute, 60 minute or 90 minute

Fireguard convenience
Being a one-piece design, no further firehoods are required making Fireguard the easiest

Fire protection
Under fire conditions, special intumescent material swells
and seals the downlight so that the fire rated ceiling is
maintained for its full rated duration. No firehoods
required, saving considerable installation time and effort.
Air permeability
Under normal working conditions the white silicon gasket
serves to ensure a tailored fit against the underside of the ceiling,
preventing air permeability and stopping any light spill. This also
ensures a decorated finish to the ceiling; assuming the ceiling is
white. The silicon “O” Ring serves to further prevent air permeability
through the body of the luminaire

down by building regulation and industry bodies can be easily met.

JCC are pleased to announce the arrival of another useful product to aid the safe installation of recessed luminaries in cold
loft areas. Modern building methods demand the deployment of energy saving construction techniques. The Government has
issued legally binding minimum standards that must be adhered to. The latest release of Part L requires insulation materials
in cold loft spaces to remain continuous and that air permeability is limited to exacting standards. FireGuard downlights are
designed to reduce these losses to within published safe levels.
Market requirements
The use of continuous mineral wool insulating materials makes it impossible to see where downlights have been installed
and there is also a risk that householders might step or place items of storage on top of the luminaire areas. In response to
these issues our customers and certain Building Control Officers have voiced their needs.
The solution
The JCC loft brace offers mechanical protection against accidental damage to the luminaire, as well as the added benefit of
allowing additional air movement around the light fitting. The loft brace is available in two sizes for either 400mm or
600mm joist widths and can be simply fitted over the area where the lighting product is installed. This simple and
economical solution is designed to offer mechanical protection to the luminaire thus allowing all building and lighting
standards to be met.
Wherever the loft brace is employed in the installation JCC Lighting will extend the standard 1 year warranty to 3 years.
