For decades the lighting industry has turned to Hydrel’s revolutionary flow-through product solutions when quality and performance matter most. For Hydrel, the paradox was meeting customer needs for minimal luminaire depth and aperture size, or situations where flow-through technology was not applicable. With this in mind, Hydrel set out to establish the standard for sealed in-grade illumination. The result: Paradox™ Architectural In-grade Luminaires. The Paradox™ Architectural In-grade is a compact, high-performance luminaire designed for up lighting architectural and landscape features, while providing the best modular sealed technology in the lighting industry today. Hydrel offers special insight into the complex demands of providing aesthetic, efficient and durable lighting for in-grade applications. With a patent-pending junction box design and proprietary sealing technology, the Paradox™ is easy to install and highly durable. Proven Knife-Edge technology provides a watertight seal. The patent-pending door design maintains a wide source offering, allowing the light emitting area to exceed that of much larger luminaires. Hydrel’s cool lens model is able to reduce heat by as much as 30%. These performance features combined with the fixture’s low profile and simple styling make the Paradox™ series the first choice for sealed in-grade lighting. Architecturally Styled | Rugged Construction | Superior Performance 1 DESIGN + PERFORMANCE FEATURES · · · · Architecturally styled 7" low profile aperture. Minimal luminaire size and presence features an 8" housing depth. Utilizes 12W LED to 70W MH sources. Modular design simplifies installation and maintenance. · Innovative sealing technology provides IP68 Rating and meets UL wet location requirements. · Precision optics designed to maximize lighting performance and minimize glare. · Reduced lens surface temperature through the use of Hydrel's patent pending cool lens model. ...Truth worth considering. 2 SPECIFICATIONS DOOR MATERIAL Die cast bronze or stainless steel. HOUSING Compression molded polyester with patent pending internal direct access junction box for throughbranch wiring. Internal junction box provides 44 in3 volume for ease of wire connections and to ensure proper seal during installation. The housing is U.V. stabilized, impact and corrosion resistant for use in all types of environments. The housing utilizes a side-car configuration and houses both the lamp and power module components as well as the lens/ door finishing section. LIGHT DISTRIBUTION Narrow spot through wide flood available. See ordering guide for complete list of distribution options. REFLECTORS (Non-reflectorized lamps): High purity anodized specular or semi-specular materials in various distributions provide maximum performance and uniformity. Lamps can be aimed 15° from vertical and rotated 360°. All configurations available with Hydrel’s Aim-Lock® indexed and locking components to allow re-lamping and maintenance without re-aiming. LENS / SEAL Tempered clear flat borosilicate glass. The patent pending door / lens seal uses proprietary Knife-Edge technology to secure the assembly to the housing. Three captive screws hold the assembly in place. The lens is custom molded to provide maximum aperture opening and advanced thermal characteristics. CONDUIT ENTRIES Two molded ¾” NPT side entries standard, bottom hubs are molded with a ¾” NPT membrane knockout. POWER MODULE Integrally mounted modular power supply, prewired with quick connectors for easy installation and maintenance. Ballasts are rated for low starting temperatures. High power factor magnetic ballasts standard, electronic ballasts also available. FINISH Natural bronze or stainless steel with a brushed finish. Bronze doors may be painted. See ordering guide for color options. 3 HYDREL INNOVATION EASY AIMING Fixture aiming is a critical element to many projects and designers are concerned with the methods to accomplish it. Paradox™ Series lamps can be aimed 15° from vertical and rotated 360°. The Paradox™ Series uses a mechanical aiming process. Aim-Lock® indexed and locking components allow maintenance and relamping to be accomplished without re-aiming. 2 1 1 Loosen two tilt screws. 3 2 Tilt lamp. 3 Tighten two tilt screws. 4 5 4 Rotate optic assembly. 5 Tighten rotational lock screw DOOR / LENS ASSEMBLY Hydrel’s patent pending door design utilizes proven Knife-Edge technology to ensure a watertight seal. Three captive door screws maintain aesthetic integrity and are designed to allow for positive sealing without the ability to damage the grommet through over-tightening. By incorporating a custom molded lens design, the Paradox™ Architectural In-grade provides maximum aperture opening while maintaining a minimal footprint. For added safety, Hydrel offers an optional anti-slip lens (pictured right). REDUCED LENS TEMPERATURES A major challenge in the design of in-grade fixtures is the removal of heat to protect components and provide lower lens temperatures. When the potential exists for direct human contact with lenses, care is required to protect pedestrians from injury. The Paradox™ Architectural In-grade Cool Lens model (PDX7CL) utilizes a combination brass top ring, heat sink, and reflective secondary IR lens filter to reduce heat by 30% when necessary. As with the use of all luminaires in pedestrian areas, Hydrel recommends that the proper care be taken in the selection of luminaire location, lamp wattage and distribution, in order to minimize pedestrian risk. 4 Lens IR Lens Brass Top Ring BEST FOR A REASON SOURCE The Paradox™ Architectural In-grade is a compact, high performance luminaire, and at 8 inches in depth the shallowest fixture able to accommodate lamps to 70W HID. Developed with the industry’s leading technology in mind, the Paradox™ Series is also available with LED sources. Incorporating the superior lumen maintenance and optimized energy performance of LEDs into Hydrel’s revolutionary sealed in-grade once again sets the standard for design and performance in architectural in-grade lighting. • • • • • Low Voltage to 75 Watts Incandescent to 70 Watts HID to 70 Watts Compact Fluorescent to 26 Watts LED to 12 Watts JUNCTION BOX Hydrel’s patent pending junction box design offers 44 in3 volume for simpler installation and utilizes proven Knife-Edge technology to ensure a watertight seal. A single fastener makes installation 50% faster and ensures even compression at the gasket, offering the highest protection against moisture intrusion for sealed in-grade technology. ACCESSORIES INTERNAL SOURCE SHIELDS / GLARE CONTROL The Paradox™ Architectural In-grade features internal glare control options for a number of distributions, providing clean, architecturally pleasing surfaces. These shields fasten internally, eliminating glare outside the desired distribution pattern. COLOR CONTROL Achieved through color filters or monochromatic LEDs, color is an important parameter for lighting designers. Hydrel has been at the forefront in providing color options for a wide range of projects and applications. DECORATIVE ROCK GUARD (pictured right) With Hydrel’s decorative rock guard, safety no longer detracts from the aesthetic value of a lighting design. The patent pending rock guard is offered in cast bronze or stainless steel, is integrally cast as part of the door, and meets safety and luminaire preservation objectives as a singular die-cast component. 5 THE CATHEDRAL OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT Facade lighting on the cathedral was developed to accentuate the ornate character of the architecture, rather than flatly flood walls. Hydrel in-grades are strategically located to highlight various elements. Each in-grade uses a 70-watt ceramic metal halide lamp for color qualities similar to that of incandescent, but with six to ten times the life and much better efficiency.
