Access by Water
Access to Vancouver Marina is via the North Arm of the Fraser River which branches onto the Middle Arm of the Fraser
River – which is where the marina is located. The orange line is the recommended track.
Coward’s
Cove
This area is shallow!
KEEP OUT!
Use Canadian Hydrographic Service Chart# 3491
or appropriate Electronic Chart
Vancouver Marina (1971) Ltd. | 8211 River Road | Richmond, BC | V6X 1X8 | (604) 278-9787 | vancouvermarina.com
When entering the North Arm, be sure to enter so that the North Arm Jetty is on your starboard side. At the entrance
you will see another jetty to your port side extending out from the shore. When coming up the North Arm, do not drift
over towards ‘the flats’. This is extremely shallow water. Once you reach the Arthur Lang Bridge, you will turn south
down the Middle Arm. The speed limit on the Middle Arm is DEAD SLOW (meaning no wake). Please drop your speed to
an idle. You will go under three bridges – the Canada Line Bridge, the Airport Connector Bridge, and the Middle Arm
Swing Bridge. Vancouver Marina will be on your left.
Local Knowledge
Wake
The North Arm is a working river. It is used by logging companies to store log booms in the fresh water. Often, there
will be men working on the booms. Out of courtesy, slow down to an idle when you see men working on booms, so your
wake does not create a dangerous situation. Most tugs and log salvagers monitor VHF channel 16 and channel 06.
Logs
Always be on the lookout for logs and deadheads. What is a deadhead? A
deadhead is a log that floats vertically. Deadheads can be found in all coastal
waters. Hitting one with your boat could cause extreme damage, therefore it is
recommended that you always have a sharp eye out for logs and deadheads.
Deadheads can also cause significant damage to the marina. Our staff comb the
docks and the Middle Arm each day to remove and secure logs and deadheads.
If you see a deadhead on the Middle Arm, or in a slip, please let the marina staff
know before it causes damage!
Deadheads can cause serious damage
to boats and docks.
The River Mouth
When leaving the North Arm for the ocean, it is wise to take note of the existing current and wind direction prior to your
departure. A strong falling tide, coupled with a strong North West wind (15+knots) can equal a very rough sea at the
mouth of the North Arm. A great spot to wait for the sea to calm is Cowards Cove. Sheltered by a jetty at the end of the
North Arm is Cowards Cove – it is somewhat shallow, so use caution when entering.
It is also advised that you do not ‘cut across’ Point Grey when heading north. This area is shallow and is clearly marked
on charts.
Marina Amenities & Services
Garbage & Recycling
The marina offers full garbage and recycling services, and we have bins
conveniently placed within the marina for your use. We ask that you please sort
your garbage, recycling, and compost, and place the items in the appropriate
bins. We also recycle hazardous waste such as used motor oil, used filters,
empty oil containers, oily pads, used batteries, and contaminated fuels. With the
exception of contaminated fuel, all items are recycled at no cost. Please bring
your hazardous materials to the fuel dock for recycling. NEVER put hazardous
materials into the garbage/recycling containers!

Dock Carts
Dock carts are located at the bottom of the ramp on the North side, and at the top of the ramp
on the South side. Carts are used for transporting clean goods only. We ask that you return
the cart to the above location when you are done using it so others can use them. Dock carts
are in high-demand on busy summer weekends.
Fuel Dock
The fuel dock is located on the end of A-Dock and is also home to the marina office. The fuel
dock has a restroom open 24/7. As a marina customer, you will receive a 5₵/litre discount on
fuel. Simply let the fuel dock staff know your name and slip in the marina and they will apply
the discount. Per your moorage agreement, you cannot fill your boat up with jerry cans. This
practice is prone to spills.
The fuel dock offers mid-grade ethanol-free gasoline and ultra low-sulpher diesel. The store
offers marine supplies, fishing bait and tackle, snacks, drinks, lubricants and filters, and other
marine gear.
Electrical Service
Adapters
Each berth features an electrical outlet and an electrical meter. Should you
require an adapter (i.e. 15 amp male to 30 amp female), we require that you use
a pigtail style adapter (not a one-piece adapter). One-piece adapters do not
provide the same secure connection that a pigtail adapter does.
Cords
Cords must be in good condition, and rated for outdoor use. Marinco electrical
cords are recommended and available for purchase at the fuel dock. Cords do
not last forever – if your cord is looking worn out or has corrosion in the plug
ends, then you should replace it. Electrical fires are the MAIN cause of marina
fires. A proactive approach will prevent the majority of such incidents.
Breakers
Each slip has its own breaker. To reset your breaker, open the lid adjacent your
power receptacle, turn the switch OFF, then turn to ON. If your breaker is
continually ‘popping’, then you are drawing more power than is available from your
receptacle. Check your boat to see what is running. Electric heaters are extremely
inefficient and draw a lot of power. Electric hot water tanks also draw a lot of power
and should be turned off when not in use.
Typical power centre showing breaker box
with lid open. This boater is using the correct
adapter.
Billing
Utilities are billed every three months. There is a base charge of $10.00/month, plus metered electricity at 12₵/kWh.
The invoice will be emailed to you, and will be billed to either your credit card on file or to your pre-authorized debit
plan. Please be sure to keep your account up to date to avoid any interruptions in service.

WiFi Service
Vancouver Marina has a complimentary WiFi service that is accessible throughout the marina.
For a complimentary voucher, please go to, or call the fuel dock. The complimentary service is
reserved for boats docked at the marina and is limited to three devices per customer. Once you
have a voucher, select VANMARINA_Public_WiFi in your network settings, and open up an
internet browser (such as Internet Explorer or Google Chrome). A splash page will open where
you can enter your voucher code. Your voucher will be valid for one month. A paid service is
also available if you would like faster download speeds, or if you have more than three devices.
Security
Vancouver Marina’s facilities are protected with security gates that utilize a key fob
system as well as monitored video security. Each customer is provided with one key
fob. Never give your fob to somebody else – it is registered to you! Never prop-open
gates or allow non-key holders in to the marina. Always direct folks wishing to gain
marina access to call the marina office. Although your first card does not require a
deposit, failure to return the card should you leave the marina will result in the $20
deposit being charged. Additional fobs are available for a $20/card deposit.
Dock Assistance – Dock Hop Service
Vancouver Marina has staff available to assist you with your lines when you are arriving and departing. To arrange for
assistance, call the office by phone, VHF 66A, or simply come in to the fuel dock. Although we will do our absolute best
to get to your slip in a timely manner, please be patient as there may be occasions when staff are busy assisting others.
Fish Cleaning Tables
New to Vancouver Marina in 2015 are fish cleaning tables. Each table is equipped with fresh water to make cleaning
your daily catch a breeze! Please do your part when using the tables:



Clean the table off when you are finished using it.
Hang water hose up nicely when finished.
Put all trimmings into the green bin (not into the garbage bucket or into the water).
Water
A water tap is provided at each slip for your convenience. We ask that you use water sparingly by using a water nozzle
and turning off the tap when you are finished. Note that we turn off/winterize the water system when temperatures
are forecast to be below freezing.
Parking
Each moorage slip includes one parking pass. You must display your parking pass in the windshield of your car so
patrollers can see it. Please ensure that the pass has been validated with the appropriate decal. If the pass is expired,
illegible, or not visible, you will receive a parking violation from Diamond Parking Service (DPS). There is a one hour
grace period in the South lot, and a three hour grace period in the North lot.
Please be courteous when parking in the marina – i.e. do not park in more than one space, do not block driveways, and
if you have a choice between a large truck versus a smaller car, please choose the smaller car. If you have guests, please
see the map on the next page – there is plenty of street parking (highlighted in orange) along River Road, Sea Island
Way, and Corvette Way. There is not enough parking in our lots for more than one vehicle per boat.

Revenue Sharing/Sub-letting
Short Term Sub-letting
If you are going to be out of your slip for more than a week, please let us know. We have a strong demand for short
term moorage in the summer months. When we sub-let your slip for you, you will receive a credit of ⅔ of your normal
pro-rated daily rate for each day your slip is sub-let. The credit can be used to offset utilities, fuel, or moorage!
Long Term Sub-letting
If you are planning to be away from your slip for a long period of time, or if you no longer require your slip (i.e. you sold
your boat), you can ask us to sub-let your slip. The length of the sub-let will determine how the sub-let revenue is split:



11 to 12 months: 90% of your pro-rated daily rate will be refunded to you.
10 to 11 months: 80% of your pro-rated daily rate will be refunded to you.
Less than 10 months: ⅔ of your pro-rated daily rate will be refunded to you.
The refund will be determined by calculating the number of days your slip is sub-let for multiplied by the above revenue
share ratio, plus GST. NO REFUND WILL BE ISSUED IF YOUR SLIP IS NOT SUB-LET. We cannot guarantee that we will be
successful in sub-letting your slip.
Only the marina can sub-let a slip. Customers cannot sub-let, advertise, or lend their slip to somebody else.
Refunds will be issued as follows: If you are returning to the marina, the refund will be issued as a credit on your
account. If you are not returning to the marina (i.e. you have sold your boat), the refund will be issued by either a
cheque, or as a refund to the credit card which you used to pay for moorage.
Docking Tips
Being in tidal water, the marina experiences four tide changes per day. It is important to understand which direction the
current is moving, and how to operate your boat safely in the current. The three most important things to note is to (1)
always (whenever possible) keep your bow angled into the current. This is to counteract drift down-current. (2) Always
give yourself a lot of space on the downstream side of your boat, and (3) go slowly. If the tide is running out (ebb tide)
and you are returning to the marina, go downstream (past the marina and through the bridges), turn around, and head
back to the marina – this will slow your boat down!
Note the heading of the boat versus the
resulting track – always note which way the
current is flowing and correct accordingly

How to Tie Up Your Boat
For added protection, consider outfitting your slip with dock
wheels and dock edging. Please note that the marina must
approve anything that is going to be mounted to the docks – you
are therefore advised to purchase any bumpers, etc., from the
marina to ensure you are purchasing approved gear!
If you buy your gear from us, we will install all of the bumpers
free of charge!
Keeping Your Boat Dry
The best way to keep your boat dry is to utilize an air-dryer suck as the Caframo Stor-Dry. This will circulate air through
the boat and dry it – but it will not consume a huge amount of electricity. Do not use electric heaters to keep your boat
dry. This is a very expensive and inefficient method! In the engine compartment, only use a device approved for such
use (such as the Caframo Pali, or an Xtreme heater.
Dock Etiquette
Working on Your Boat
You are permitted to work on your boat while it is in the marina, providing that your work is not impacting your
neighbours (i.e. sanding your woodwork should be done in a boatyard – dust could get onto your neighbour’s boat).
Noise
The marina is a nice quiet place for all to enjoy. Keep any noise/music contained to the confines of your own boat!
Dock Storage
Do not store anything on the docks – this includes crab traps. If your slip does not have a dock box, you may purchase
one from the marina.
Dock Carts
Always return the dock carts to the designated locations. Carts are always in high demand! Always ensure the cart is
emptied after you are finished.
Pets
Vancouver Marina is a pet-friendly marina. If you do bring Fido down to the marina, we require that your dog is kept on
a leash at all times, and if your pooch does his business on the docks (#1 or #2), that you pick up after him/ and rinse the
dock down afterwards.
Accidents
If you have a collision, please report it to the marina immediately.
Dinghies
Dinghies cannot be stored on the dock, nor can they be left to drift behind your boat. Dinghies should be stored on your
boat (on a davit system).

Safety
Safety is our utmost priority. Children on the docks MUST wear a lifejacket at ALL TIMES as should adults who can’t
swim. Remember that your safety, as well as the safety of our crew always comes before property.
Outside Contractors
We welcome outside contractors to work on your boat while in the marina. We do require, however that your
contractor operates with the appropriate insurance and Work Safe BC coverage. We also advise that you carefully select
the contractor that will be working on your boat. Be sure to ask the marina staff for recommendations when making a
selection. Contractors must check in with the marina prior to working on your boat.

Our Commitment to the Marine Environment
Vancouver Marina is a proud partner of the Georgia Strait Alliance’s Clean
Marine BC program. The program has aided Vancouver marina in developing
environmental policies and procedures that insure our impact on the marine
environment is minimized. Our success in the pursuit of our environmental
goals require the cooperation of boaters as well. We ask that you adhere to
our environmental policies, utilize all tools available to you, and when in
doubt, ask marina staff.
Vancouver Marina’s Environmental Policy
a. Vancouver Marina understands and recognizes the vital importance of maintaining a clean natural environment
as being fundamental to our activities.
b. In accepting and adopting those best management principles and operating practices that are appropriate to our
operation, Vancouver Marina commits itself to the best of its ability to:
1. Eliminate the release of contaminants to the water column, both directly and indirectly.
Vancouver Marina (1971) Ltd. | 8211 River Road | Richmond, BC | V6X 1X8 | (604) 278-9787 | vancouvermarina.com
2. Minimize the release of pollutants to the atmosphere.
3. Avoid contamination of the ground.
4. Adopt waste reduction, reuse and recycling strategies.
5. Optimize energy and water conservation.
6. Promote good environmental practices to all parties.
7. Abide by and, where possible, exceed the requirements of all relevant legislation.
c. Marina management will introduce sound environmental practices into every aspect of our operation; we will
train our employees to understand and implement these practices; we will provide the resources that are
needed to allow the policy to be fulfilled.
d. The philosophy of this policy will be integrated into the contract between the marina and our customers.
e. All suppliers and subcontractors will be made aware of the intent of this policy and will be encouraged to adopt
the same good practices where appropriate.
f. The marina also commits itself to an ongoing program of self-evaluation. We will strive to continually upgrade
and improve our environmental performance in light of future developments in marina management techniques
and product availability.
Green Boating Tips
1. Use only environmentally friendly cleaners (look for the EcoLogo).
2. Maintain your boat: clean the bottom, ensure the engine is tuned properly, and choose a prop with the right
pitch.
3. Utilize all recycling services available: we recycle most items at the marina!
4. Ensure that your bilge is clean. A bilge sock is a good idea as it will soak up any hydrocarbons.
5. Prevent fuel spills: don’t top off your tank, use a fuel donut, and utilize No-Spill tank vent devices.
6. Determine your most economical power setting.
7. Stow your trash on board your boat: be careful that trash doesn’t blow overboard when underway.
8. Utilize sewage pump-outs when available: the closest pump-out to Vancouver Marina is in False Creek.
