Objectives:
To develop skills measuring chemicals with a graduated cylinder.
To practice using the metric system
The test precision and ability to follow directions.
Materials:
Food Coloring or Food coloring solution
6 test tubes, labeled A, B, C, D, E, F in a test tube rack
Eye dropper (s)
2 medium or large beakers
1- 50 mL graduated cylinder
1-10 mL graduated cylinder
Step-by-step Procedure :
Part 1:
1. Fill a beaker half full of water. Use this to rinse your graduated cylinder and test tubes.
The second beaker is for contaminated water.
2. Into test tube A, measure 25 mL of RED liquid.
3. Into test tube C, measure 17 mL of YELLOW liquid.
4. Into test tube E, measure 21 mL of BLUE liquid.
Part 2:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
From test tube C, measure 4 mL and pour it into test tube D.
From test tube E, measure 7 mL and pour it into test tube D. Swirl.
From test tube E, measure 4 mL and pour it into test tube F.
From test tube A, measure 7 mL and pour it into test tube F. Swirl.
From test tube A, measure 8 mL and pour it into test tube B.
From test tube C, measure 3 mL and pour it into test tube B. Swirl.
Save your results. Measure the contents of each test tube and record how many mL
were found in each test tube. Record your results on the data table on the back.

Analysis/Conclusion:
1. Name the three colors that you created:
2. How many total mL of liquid were the test tubes at the end of Part 1?
Test tube A _________ + Test tube C _________ + Test tube E _________ = _________mL
3. How does your answer in question #2 compare to the total liquid in test tubes A-F in your data
table?
4. Why is it so important to follow directions exactly?
