Shop Drawing Program for Sprinkler and Fire Alarms
Fire Alarm and Automatic Sprinkler Shop Drawings will be required to be submitted directly to the
Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal's Office located in the Hal Marshall Center at 700 N. Tryon Street.
Drawings may be transmitted by any means including FedEx, UPS, U.S. Mail, or in person.

NOTE: Effective July 1, 2012 there will be a $140.00 shop drawing plan review fee per project. The
fee must be paid at the time of submittal or a valid account number must be provided. Checks
shall be made to: Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal’s Office
Our process will be as follows:

Provide one copy of each set (max. two sets) with applicable cut sheets and hydraulic
calculations for automatic sprinkler system shop drawings. Plans shall include, but will not be
limited to all the requirements set forth in Section 903 of the NC Fire Code. Sprinkler systems
shall be installed per NFPA 13.

Provide one copy of each set (max. two sets) with applicable cut sheets for fire alarm shop
drawings. Plans shall include, but will not be limited to all of the requirements set forth in Section
907 of the NC Fire Code. Fire alarm systems shall be installed per NFPA 72.

Shop drawings shall be submitted within 90 days of building or low voltage permit issuance.

Sprinkler drawings and hydraulic calculations shall be submitted when the sprinkler work involves
the addition of 20 heads or more, change of density, use, or the installation of any heads that may
affect the original hydraulic demand.

Fire alarm drawings shall be submitted when the work involves the addition of 5 or more devices,
floor plan alterations (cubicles included), or any installations that impact egress or non-required
systems.

A low voltage permit may be required from Mecklenburg County LUESA for most fire alarm
installations.

NICET Level 2 or factory training required for all fire alarm designs. Copies of certifications
shall be required with all fire alarm plan submittals.
