Surge Buster™ Surge Protector - Series 50SP1000
ABB Surge Buster™ Surge Protector
The Series 50SP1000 ABB Surge Buster is designed
to protect electrical transmitters from damage and
malfunctions due to power and signal line transients.
Depending on the geographic location of the converter,
lightning damage may occur to the transmitter from
transients on the power line, or any of the three output
lines (4-20 mAdc, scaled pulse and 0/100% contact
closure). Converters also can be located near major
pieces of electrical equipment which also can cause
transients in the power or signal lines above the
acceptable limits.

Equipment Description
Disclaimer
The ABB Surge Buster protects the electrical
transmitter with which it is used, from damage and/or
instrument malfunction caused by power and signal
line transients, by absorbing induced transients.
The Series 50SP1000 ABB Surge Buster Surge
Protectors are designed to meet the ANSI
specifications referred to in this publication, and are
state-of-the-art devices which will provide the
specified protection when installed using proper
wiring and grounding procedures. The ABB Surge
Buster has been tested up to 6000V per ANSI
C62.41-1980.
It protects against transients on the transmitter power
line and in three separate output signal lines and has
pending approval by Factory Mutual for Class I, Div. 2,
Groups A, B, C, & D, NEMA 4X. The circuit board is
coated with polyurethane for corrosion resistance.
ABB Surge Buster meets the requirements of ANSI
C37.90a - 1974/IEEE Std. 472-1974 and ANSI C62.41
- 1980/IEEE Std. 587-1980. Test results are provided
when requested. It is housed in a corrosion resistant
NEMA 4X (IEC 529, IP65) enclosure.
However while infrequent, higher voltages (such as
a direct lightening strike) on connecting lines are
possible and the Series 50SP1000 may not protect
a transmitter from damage in instances where the
induced voltages exceed the ANSI test specification.
The Surge Buster is a Trademark of ABB Inc.
