ANIMAL ANTICS
Grades: Pre-Primary through 5th
Each week we will have so much FUN as we visit with a new pet or other animal and explore its
natural habitat, habits, and characteristics. We will meet each little critter up close. A photograph of
each child holding each animal will be taken. Some students will have the opportunity to bring their
own pet(s) in addition to the ones provided. For our last class, we celebrate all of our new animal
friends with a scrapbook of pictures and summaries of our experiences with them. Among the animals
we hope to meet are a bearded dragon, tortoise, hedgehog, ferret, turtle, guinea pig, parrot, snake,
kitten, dog and others. Come have fun with some new furry, scaly, and slick animal friends this
semester. An after school snack is also provided.

Formerly Art Club -- Enjoy drawing, painting, sculpture, Rainbow Loom, bracelets, pillows, weaving,
knitting, melties, jewelry making, arts and crafts, and so much more. Students learn to relax, focus,
improve fine motor skills, and expand their creativity while having fun with their favorite art
techniques.

BAND
Grades 4 – 12th
The Shelton Band is open to all 4th – 12th grade students of all experience levels. Band meets every
Tuesday and Thursday afternoon on campus. Students can choose any instrument to play including
flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass guitar, and drums. All bands focus on
performance and both the social and educational aspects of being a member of a band and learning
an instrument. In beginner band, we work on learning how to read music, study beginning music
theory, learn, proper instrument technique, and prepare for our first concert during the holiday season.
Concert and Advanced band requires at least 1 year of experience on your instrument. This band will
perform at school events throughout the year, including Grandparents’ Day and the Homecoming Pep
Rally. All band students and parents are eligible to attend an annual spring break concert tour.

Beginners meet from 3:30 to 4:15 pm. Concert Band members must be in the chaperoned study hall
until 4:15. Concert Band rehearses from 4:15 – 5:00 pm.

CHEERLEADING – Jr. Charger Cheerleaders (2-4) OR Intro to MS Cheerleading (5-6)

For athletes interested in representing Shelton School at pep rallies, sporting events, and spirit-related
activities! Welcoming all skill levels, cheerleading is designed to enrich confidence and self-esteem
while preparing athletes to lead fans with crowd responsive cheers and chants using signs, stunts, and
poms. Practice will be held in a safe, challenging and rewarding environment enhancing motion,
jump and stunt technique as well as dance and showmanship skills.

CHESS CLUB
Grades 1st through 8th
Presented by USA Chess, a nationally renowned children's chess academy. The student will learn the
basic rules of chess, study openings, middle-game, endgame, how to checkmate the opponent’s King,
and understand what a stalemate is. They will also learn basic tactical exercises (pins, forks, double
attacks, skewers, etc.) and how to look out for tricks and traps in the game. As they grow stronger, they
will learn to spot simple combinations, and master the simplest methods of attacking and defending. The
purpose is to teach the student to see the chess board, to find hidden threats and connections between
different pieces, and to understand how to coordinate the pieces to achieve one goal or another.
Decisiveness, discipline, analytical thinking, focus, and patience are important at this young age, as this
is when thinking patterns and habits are developed. Chess accomplishes all of these qualities.

COOKING AND BAKING
Grades 3 – 6
Join us for delicious adventures each week as we learn to cook and bake snacks (mostly healthy, but
some are not!) that are easy enough to make with little or no parent supervision. Smoothies,
Bubblegum and Microwave Monkey Bread are just a few of the items that students will learn to make.

HOMEWORK CLUB
Grades 3 – 5
Are you struggling to find time for your child to complete homework? Is your evening filled with
extra-curricular activities? Do you wish that you had a quiet place for your son/daughter to work?
Have you ever wished that there were a teacher on-hand in order to explain the assignments?
Wouldn’t it be great to have homework mostly done before you pick-up your child from school? If
you answered, “yes,” to one or more of these questions, then this is the club for you! Mrs. King and
Mrs. Chen will assist your child with much of his/her homework in a controlled, quiet environment.
Your child will then be free to enjoy other after school activities and family time.

JOY INITIATIVE
Grades 9 – 12
Are you a high school student interested in cultivating joy and happiness? Did you even know that you
could?! Join us for a semester of exploration and enjoyment as we engage in activities designed to
help us experience more joy in our daily lives no matter our circumstances. We will engage in creative
projects, play games, enjoy speakers, journal, explore stress-reduction techniques, and more. There is
an actual science of happiness, and we’re going to check it out!
What to expect: Purposeful activities designed to help us connect wit ourselves and others and create
joy in our daily lives no matter our circumstances.
Cost: 1 day a week, Tuesday: $350/semester; Starts September 13 ending Dec. 6
2 days a week (Thursday optional 2nd day): $450/semester

Items to bring to activity: Wear clothing in which you can move freely. We may do indoor activities

KIDS FIT -- INSANITY LIVE: KIDS
Grades 1 – 5
Let’s get kids up and moving and off of the their electronics! This isn’t your ordinary fitness class. It’s
focused on kids! This stimulating workout provides individual support and group motivational
techniques focused on challenging kids to unleash their inner athlete while targeting 4 core phases of
training: endurance, strength, agility, and core. When the student takes Insanity Live: Kids with Ms.
Golieb, they are inspired to live more fit and healthier lives, but most of all they have fun doing it!
Ms. Golieb is a certified Insanity Live Instructor.

LEARN TO KNIT
Grades 3 – 5
Participants will learn the basics of knitting—knit/purl stitches to create several projects. All children
will create a beautiful washcloth that can be used for many years to come. Second project will be a
scarf. Needles and yarn will be provided.

LEGO MANIA
Grades EC – 2nd
Kids are already naturally gifted creators. While diving into our massive collections of Legos, they
build elaborate objects, structures and vehicles, and explore the fundamental principles of engineering
and physics. They also learn to collaborate and create without fear of mistakes. The experience is
joyful, the impact long-lasting. Don’t let your child miss out on this awesome creative opportunity.

MARTIAL ARTS
Grades EC – 12th
This is a tremendous opportunity for your children to improve their grades and motor skills
significantly by learning martial arts. This program gives parents the convenience of martial arts
training for their kids without having to pick them up and deliver them to a martial arts school. The
benefits of teaching by repetition, while the children learn to focus on prolonged tasks, are impressive.
This program will also help your child learn the three R’s: respect for themselves, respect for others,
and responsibility for their own actions. As with the traditional at-the-gym program, this program is
on-going through the year so a child can continue training and progressing in skill level and belt rank.
We encourage all the children from previous sessions to continue achieving their goals for the present
session.

MINECRAFT CLUB

Minecraft Club is an opportunity for students to gather once a week to play, collaborate, and talk all
things Minecraft. The club will be student-led, with a sponsor facilitating activities. Minecraft Club is a
great chance for students to meet and make new friends, while working on social interactions and
decision-making skills.

Is your child a fan of the game Minecraft? If so, then the Minecraft Fan Club will be a blast for your
child! Every week we will be doing an activity related to Minecraft! Club members will be crafting
(making Minecraft swag bags), cooking (Minecraft snacks), building (Legos Minecraft worlds), brewing
(science experiments), and playing outdoor and indoor games with a Minecraft theme.

PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS
Grades 5th – 12th
Private voice lessons are available for students in grades 5 through 12 who seek: intense training
vocal technique, to learn solo music, to receive performance coaching, to learn and practice music
reading skills, and to generally have fun singing. All styles of music are available, including pop,
Broadway, country and classical. Lessons may be purchased in 30 minute ($35) or 1 hour ($70)
increments.
NOTE: No supervision is available for students enrolled in private lessons before or after their
scheduled lesson. Students must be picked or leave campus at regular dismissal time and return at
their lesson time. Alternately parents can enroll 5th through 8th grade students in Shelton After Care, if
space is available, for an additional fee.

ROBOT GARAGE

Tech EdVentures is Dallas’ premier provider of hands-on classes in computer programming and
engineering for young learners. We are pleased to partner with Shelton in the coming year to enrich
the learning experience of your students.
Class Title: Robot Garage (Two Sections) Description: Students tackle real-world challenges as they
program robots to detect obstacles, navigate around barriers and even communicate with their users.
Kids will tackle an exciting project at the end of each semester which challenges them to integrate and
apply the skills they have learned. This is a great introduction to robotics.

SHELTON SINGERS
Grades 5 – 8
Enjoy music? Love to sing? Want to perform? Here’s your chance to do both. Shelton Singers is a
beginner choir now open to all students in 5th – 8th grades. Students will learn and improve verbal
technique and breath management, experience a variety of musical styles and literature, and have the
opportunity to work within in a team to reach a common goal. Performance opportunities include an
end-of-the-semester concert for family and friends and participation in a local music festival.
Rehearsals will be every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30, beginning September 12th. One
of two extra rehearsals may be scheduled around performance time. Choir t-shirt, music folder, and all
music are included.
NOTE: Participation in music elective/special (choir or band) is required, whether student has already
completed it or will do it during the semester.

SPORTS CLUB
Grades 3 - 6
We will meet after school on Mondays to play an organized sport. Throughout the semester we will
play a number of different sports, some team oriented and others more individually oriented. There
will be a strong emphasis on sportsmanship and playing as a team rather than as an individual. The
vision of the club is to offer a time students can come together to have fun playing sports under the
guidance of Coach Riemer. The club is not an organized team that will play other schools or teams
and is not meant to train your child to be an elite athlete. Students will get basic instruction on sports
and everyone, no matter skill level, will be part of the game. If you love sports and love being active,
come join Coach Riemer’s Sports Club.
When: Mondays, September 12 – December 5
Time: 3:30–4:30 Cost: $375 per student for the semester.
Students will meet in Mr. Riemer’s room (#259) to drop off backpack and will be allowed to change if
they bring clothes to play in. Students will be picked up at 4:30, at the Hillcrest Rd. entrance.

Class Title: Tiny Tech: Electronics Lab Description: A hands-on understanding of the electronic circuits
that are the building blocks of our digital world. Kids will use batteries, switches, LED lights, and even
play dough while building dozens of working circuits that blink, buzz and beep. A great intro to
hands-on engineering skills!
