UQRCS – Hervey Bay 2016 Guide
WELCOME
Welcome and thank you for choosing UQRCS Hervey Bay.
We hope you have an enjoyable and rewarding experience while you are with us and
we wish you every success.
The program offered by the Rural Clinical School is modelled on the programs
offered in Brisbane for 3rd and 4th year.
In each rotation you are exposed to a wide range of clinical problems in a variety of
settings. You will be involved in patient care in inpatients, outpatients and
community settings, and you will learn primarily from the issues raised in relation to
the patients seen.
Learning will be assisted by integrated resources, including tutorials, resource packs,
video conference, PBL cases and basic science updates. Attendance at Grand
Rounds, Journal Clubs case conferences and other activities in each setting will be
part of the program.
Be proactive. Think about what you'd like to see and let your supervisor know.
Usually they are more than keen to help you organise or experience the things you
are keen to see. They also enjoy having students who are motivated and interested.
Always communicate openly with your supervisor. They are there to help you but if
they don't realise that you are having difficulty, they can't offer any assistance.
Challenges may arise for each individual throughout the year, but remember you are
not alone in your journey and that the staffs of the RCS are here to assist you with
those matters.
If you feel there are any deficiencies in the program, or you have any other problems
that are affecting your studies please communicate your concerns with us to help
you resolve the problem.
Whilst it is important that you commit fully to your studies, take every learning
opportunity made available to you, and continue to perform at a high level, it is also
important to enjoy your time here. Get out and see the Region, make new friends
and join local clubs or associations which interest you.
The Rural Clinical School team are here to ensure that your stay in Hervey Bay is as
pleasant and productive as possible.

3.4 Reporting Blood Borne Virus Status
Queensland Health has established the policy implementation standard,
Management of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus, and
Hepatitis C Virus Infected Healthcare Workers.
This implementation standard in the Queensland Health policy framework identifies
the mandatory requirements, roles and responsibilities of health care workers
infected with a blood borne virus. For the purposes of this standard, students placed
in the Rockhampton Hospital (or any Queensland Health facility) are considered
health care workers.

the Clinical School location. These
representatives are current Year 3 or Year 4
students, charged with representing the
interests of the students based at their
location. To facilitate this, the
representatives will liaise with the Clinical
School Head, the Clinical School
administration team, the UQMS and various
Hospital/Clinical School Committees.
Whilst it is hoped that any student
grievance might be resolved promptly and
at the local level, i.e. as close as possible to
the source of dissatisfaction, students may
seek the support of and guidance from
UQMS colleagues. The UQMS has established
a Clinical School Representative position in Hervey Bay.
5.4 Lockers

Students will be advised before the commencement of each rotation of where and
when they should report on the first day of term and students are reminded of the
need to check their email regularly, including over holidays, for receipt of this
information.
Students are expected to have perused the material available on the MBBS site
(Blackboard) for each rotation before attending the introduction/orientation to the
discipline.
Materials that are available on the MBBS site will not be provided in hard copy.
Should students seek any clarification of the requirements of the rotation they
should read the Electronic Course Profile, if further clarification is required they
