SensaLite First step to comfort and energy saving with intelligent luminaires Introduction Thorn’s Indoor Lighting Controls portfolio is grouped into three distinct usage types 3 2 1 1S ensaLite features Thorn luminaires with built-in sensors, and remote sensors, offering standard presence detection, daylight linking and infra-red control. SensaLite is the first step to comfort and energy saving, and is used for small office applications, simple classrooms, corridors etc. • The simplest products are switching presence detectors and photocells, called SwitchLite • RotaryDIM offers precise manual control via a wall plate •S ensaDigital covers both features: Daylight-linked dimming, presence detection and manual override via an infra-red hand held controller 2C ontroLiteDIM is used for mid-sized projects (1 room): The portfolio consists of modules for creating scene setting, enabling daylight linking and integrating presence detection. It is easy to commission by the contractor. When wiring the system, the luminaires are allocated to the switches, scene plates and presence detectors. 3S ensaLink features Thorn luminaires with built-in sensors and remote sensors offering presence detection, daylight linking and infra red control, scene setting and the possibility to link sensors. It provides a linked lighting management system for larger-sized projects and those requiring greater levels of comfort. SensaLite Performance, Efficiency, Comfort How does SensaLite support the Thorn PEC strategy? Performance: SensaLite enables you to set the right light level at the right place and at the right time. Efficiency: SensaLite is the perfect tool to provide an efficient light. Depending on the chosen product, it enables you to dim the luminaires, link the luminaires to your presence and link them to the incoming daylight to achieve energy saving. Therefore light is only provided when you need it and in the quantity that you require. One of the SensaLite products, SensaDigital, provides an additional feature: it continually adjusts its light output and energy input. This maintains illuminance over the entire period, saving the energy that conventional systems waste and fulfilling the objectives of many international and local lighting standards. Comfort: Manual dimming and presence detection are features of SensaLite making your light very comfortable. Additionally SensaLite is very easy to install and to set up. With maintaining the illuminance level over the entire period using SensaDigital (part of the SensaLite portfolio), you will always have the same light level that you require. SwitchLite SensaLite portfolio SensaDigital RotaryDIM Where to use SensaLite? Typical applications include: • Small offices, simple classrooms and other applications looking for energy saving with presence and daylight-linked luminaires or luminaire groups, • Infrequently entered areas requiring presence-linked switching of luminaires, e.g. corridors, staircases and storerooms, • Or small applications requiring intuitive and precise manual dimming of luminaires, e.g. in restaurants and bars. Examples are: Application ➦ Function Presence detection Daylight-link Dimming and Switching School & Education (class rooms) Single Offices • • • • • • Board & Seminar rooms Sport & Leisure Retail • • • Health Industry • • • • • • • • Corridors, staircases, toilets, store rooms • Overview and portfolio selection guide SensaLite offers numerous beneficial functions. The three product ranges provide a variety of features – so you can easily decide what’s best for your application: RotaryDIM SwitchLite SensaDigital Response to presence/absence • • Switching response to incoming daylight • Functions Dimming response to incoming daylight Precise dimming • • Maintained illuminance level • Local override IR handheld controller • Momentary action switch • Parameter setting for tailor-made functionality Manually • IR programmer • Installation integrated in luminaire • ceiling mounted wall mounted • • corner mounted • • • Response to presence/ absence Switching response to incoming daylight A presence-linked sensor responds to occupancy, and will switch the lighting On and Off when you enter or leave the room. The sensor incorporates an adjustable ON time delay after the last detected movement. It then switches Off the lighting. SwitchLite SensaDigital Dedicated photocells switch the luminaires On or Off in response to changes in the ambient light level. You can use these products as the daylight dependent On/ Off switch for the luminaires or in conjunction with a wall switch. These products come with an adjustable light level. SwitchLite Some sensors offer you a socalled semi-automatic mode (absence detection), where you will switch On the lighting manually (via a switch or handheld controller), and the detector will automatically switch Off the lighting after the room has been vacated. SensaDigital Dimming response to incoming daylight Sensors with dimming facility automatically adjust the light level in response to the daylight. You decide which light level the controlling sensor should maintain through the day, and if the sensor should switch the lighting Off if there is enough daylight. SensaDigital Precise dimming Local override Accurate dimming even over very long lead distances can be achieved by using digital dimming commands, i.e. controlling electronic ballasts with digital interfaces like DSI (“Digital Serial Interface”). •S ome systems offer you an infra-red handheld controller to override sensors that are responding to the incoming daylight – especially convenient in larger office applications, where you want to change the lighting allocated to your desk only. A digital rotary dimmer, with DSI output, can be used as a control device. RotaryDIM •A lternatively you can use a momentary action switch for changing the light level and to switch the light On and Off. The switch is mounted onto the wall next to the entrance of the room, and therefore ideal for smaller and single offices SensaDigital RotaryDIM SwitchLite SensaDigital • Sensors incorporating switching photocells allow you to set the light level that must be reached before the controlling device switches the light Off or keeps it Off. •S ensors responding to presence/ absence enable you to set the time duration that the device switches Off the luminaires after detecting the last movement. You are able to configure these settings manually at the product. SwitchLite Other portfolios use an infra-red programming tool to re-programme a wide range of parameters, and to set the regulating light level. This is particularly useful as you are able to change the parameters without touching the installation. It is therefore fast, hassle-free and Maintenance non-disruptive to the room users: The programming is done remotely and hence can be operated from the ground. Light level, time delay to switch Off, start-up level, fading, operation mode etc. can be set. SensaDigital Required normal illumuminance Energy savings through dimming of surplus capacity Maintained illuminance level Light levels reduce over time due to lamp age and dirty optics. Conventional installations provide more light than is necessary to ensure that the right level is met as depreciation occurs. This results in energy wastage and unnecessary cost. Being intelligent, some SensaLite products continually adjust their light output and energy input. This maintains illuminance over the entire period, saving the energy that conventional systems waste and fulfilling the objectives of many international and local lighting standards. SensaDigital Illuminance in accordance with age and soiling of lamp Illuminance Parameter setting for tailor-made functionality The default settings supplied are appropriate for most applications, however you have the facility to adapt SensaLite to your needs: Maintenance interval maximum length of the DSI wire between sensor heads and luminaires can be 12m, and between digital rotary dimmers and luminaires 50m, using standard mains wiring 2 x 1.5mm² with solid or stranded conductors, e.g. H05VV-U (harmonised standard 300/500V cable, PVC insulated and sheathed, with solid conductors) SensaDigital RotaryDIM Easy installation The SensaLite products are easy to install: •P roducts switching mains are connected to the luminaires with standard mains wiring. SwitchLite • F or the connection of dimming products, incorporating a DSI output, to the DSI dimmable luminaires, you use a 2-pole polarity-free DSI wire. The SensaLite – how to find the right product: Dimming? yes no day light linked? day light linked on/off? no yes no yes presence-linked? yes SensaDigital presence-linked? no RotaryDIM yes SwitchLite PIR presence-linked? no SwitchLite Photocells yes SwitchLite PIR+MW no no controls RotaryDIM: benefits and application Some applications merely require the ability to dim luminaires manually, e.g. bars, restaurants, hotel lobbies and waiting rooms in hospital areas. Thorn’s unique Digital Rotary Dimmer enables you to change the light level of a luminaire group incorporating up to 20 DSI ballasts – by simply turning the knob. This way of dimming is highly intuitive – as you change the light level in the way you are used to do it, at home or in lecture rooms. Note: All standard Thorn DSI dimmable luminaires can be controlled via RotaryDIM: look for Thorn luminaires containing ‘HFD’ in the descriptions of the relevant luminaire ordering guides. Precise Dimming Providing a DSI output, RotaryDIM ensures accurate dimming even over long wiring distances due to the use of digital dimming commands. All luminaires (incorporating up to 20 DSI ballasts) will be precisely on the same light level. DSI L N Wiring RotaryDIM SwitchLite SensaDigital Easy installation You just connect the Thorn standard DSI dimmable luminaires (incorporating up to 20 DSI ballasts) to the DSI output of RotaryDIM. The DSI connection is polarity-free. Additionally you connect both the luminaires and the dimmer to the mains and it works! RotaryDIM application example A bar featuring three suspended pendant luminaires over the tables, and five over the bar, e.g. with compact fluorescent lamps and DSI ballast. Requirement: Bar and guest area should be manually dimmable (separately from each other). Solution: two RotaryDIM units are used. DSI DSI Mains RotaryDIM luminaires } DSI control wires up to 50m, using standard mains wiring 2 x 1.5mm² with solid or stranded conductors, e.g. H05VV-U*, polarity free standard mains wiring * harmonised standard 300/500V cable, PVC insulated and sheathed, with solid conductors SwitchLite: benefits and application If you do not need to dim luminaires, due to their applications, but you still want to save energy by linking the lighting to presence and/or daylight, you use SwitchLite. This provides a level of simple automation when only a switching mains supply is provided to the luminaires: • SwitchLite Presence Detectors detect movement and switch luminaires On or Off in response to occupancy. Some of them also include a built-in photocell to respond to light levels if required. The SwitchLite portfolio includes Passive infrared (PIR) detectors as well as Microwave detectors. Different mounting options and detection ranges adapt to the needs of different applications, like simple offices, corridors, stair cases, utility rooms, toilets and store rooms. • SwitchLite Photocells switch the luminaires On or Off in response to changes in the ambient light level. You can use them as the daylight dependent On/Off switches for your luminaires or in conjunction with a wall switch. These photocells are ideal for controlling luminaires next to windows and in general for applications with higher daylight levels, e.g. atriums, shop windows, or in installations where due to safety reasons the lighting has to be switched on as soon as it is beginning to get dark, e.g. in public buildings, staircases and corridors. Ceiling mounted PIR Presence Detector with built-in photocell The SwitchLite MRE SLD recessed PIR Presence Detector provides energy saving by switching On/Off in response to room occupancy and daylight levels. It controls standard luminaires employing either wound gear or high frequency fixed output ballasts. The detector can be converted to a surface mounted version by using the mounting attachment kit SwitchLite KIT MSF accessory. The detector covers up to 7 metres diameter at a 2.8m mounting height. • The minimum ambient light level can be adjusted to ensure luminaires are switched On when you enter the room and daylight is insufficient, or when you are present and the daylight is getting insufficient, but also to ensure luminaires remain switched Off when you enter and there is enough daylight. No-one present. Insufficient daylight. Lights off. No-one present. Sufficient daylight. Lights off. • Additionally you can also bring the minimum ambient light level to a point at which daylight has no effect: in effect allowing the product to work as a presence detector only. • Furthermore the product provides a highly flexible time delay (adjustable between 10s and 30min), before switching luminaires Off after you have left the room. Recessed and surface mounted SwitchLite PIR presence detector. L /OUT L N 2.8m 5 - 7m L Wiring N Detection pattern RotaryDIM SwitchLite SensaDigital Wall/corner mounted PIR Presence Detector with built-in photocell For application such as corridors, staircases, storerooms or washrooms you use the SwitchLite SLD LONG RANGE wall mounted PIR presence detector: This is a wall/corner mounted unit with 110° coverage and up to 12 metre detection range. When occupancy is detected lights are switched On, and they are switched Off after a time delay has elapsed when no-one is present. You can adjust the time delay between 4 and 32 minutes to suit the type of activity being carried out. This detector offers you a built-in photocell that can be used to keep lights Off or to switch them Off whenever sufficient daylight is present - you can disable this feature if not required. Wall mounted Microwave Presence Detector No-one present. Lights off. You approach the staircase. Lights switch on. The SwitchLite SLDM is part of the SwitchLite range and is intended for general use, e.g. for corridors, warehouse racking and halls. The sensor detects movement using a highly sensitive microwave detector. This works by emitting low power microwave signals and measuring the reflections as the signals bounce off moving objects. The product is optimised for wall mounting applications to give detection over long distances (up to 30m), and in areas without thin walls or partitions (e.g. with glass). When a movement is detected the load is turned On. When an area is no longer occupied the load will switch Off after a time out period that you can adjust between 15s and 30min. The unit also has an integral sensitivity adjustment, enabling you to change the detection range from 30m down to 1m. The detector has no external lenses giving the unit additionally the appearance of a standard accessory blank plate, which is very useful in public applications like schools etc. Sufficient daylight. L N L' L' L Wiring 10 Recessed and surface mounted SwitchLite PIR presence detector Wiring N RotaryDIM SwitchLite SensaDigital SwitchLite application example A doctor’s practice comprising reception area, waiting room, surgery and attached corridor: • The reception area is switched according to the daylight level using a photocell in series with a standard mains switch. Once the ambient light level is below 300lx the light is switched Off. • For the waiting room a corner mounted PIR presence detector is used to detect everybody entering the room and to switch the light On when required. The detector switches the light Off or keeps it switched Off as soon as the minimum ambient light level reaches the set 300lx. It also switches the luminaires automatically Off 8min after the last patient has left the room. • The light in the surgery responds to presence – two ceiling mounted PIR presence detectors are employed. The minimum ambient light levels are set to 500lx. If somebody enters the room and daylight is sufficient, the light remains switched Off. If the daylight is insufficient they will switch the luminaires On and will keep them switched On even if daylight gets sufficient. They also switch the luminaires Off automatically 15min after the last person has left the room. It switches the corridor lighting On as soon somebody enters (either through the building or via the practice) and switches Off 5min after the last detection. 11 SensaDigital: benefits and application SensaDigital responds to presence/absence by switching, and to daylight by dimming: Entering an area causes the lighting to come to a preprogrammed level. The luminaires automatically adjust depending on the natural light present. Thorn was among the first companies to offer intelligent luminaires: MenloSoft SR with built-in MiniSensaDigital head • The so called SensaDigital Luminaires incorporate a miniature sensor capable of controlling electronic gears, transformers and phase dimmers via a DSI signal. • The benefit of a SensaDigital Luminaire lies in the fact that it works as soon as you take it out of the box and install it to the ceiling. You can still switch the luminaire Off via a standard mains switch, which also means you do not have to change an existing installation. • ‘Mother-daughter’ or ‘master-slave’ arrangements are possible as well, where you connect further luminaires (‘daughters’) to the DSI output of the SensaDigital Luminaire (‘mother’). The maximum number of ballasts incorporated in all controlled luminaires must not exceed 4, and all luminaires should be in the detection zone of the MiniSensaDigital head (diameter 5m at nominal mounting height 2m). HFS HFD HFD HFD Remote SensaDigital sensor heads enable you to control a group of luminaires: instead of having a ‘mother-daughter’ arrangement as described above, these remote sensor heads are mounted to the ceiling and control a luminaire group incorporating up to 8 DSI ballasts each. These luminaires should be in the detection zone of the sensor head (diameter 6m at nominal mounting height 2.4m). You have the choice between recessed mounted versions that are suitable for unobtrusive installation in suspended ceilings, or surface mounted versions for all other types of ceilings. Recessed SensaDigital head Note: All standard Thorn DSI dimmable luminaires can be controlled via remote SensaDigital heads: look for Thorn luminaires containing “HFD” in the Ordering Guide descriptions. If you choose the semi-automatic mode, you will switch On the lighting manually (via a switch or the SensaDigital handheld controller), and the detector will switch the lighting Off automatically after you have left the room. The sensor’s Off time delay after the last detected movement can be configured (between 5 and 60min). Instead of switching Off the lighting abruptly, SensaDigital also enables the lighting to be smoothly faded out. No-one present. Lights off. You enter the room. Lights switch on. You are present. Insufficient daylight. Lights on. You remain present. Sufficient daylight. Lights dim. Dimming response to incoming daylight SensaDigital automatically adjusts the light level in response to the daylight. You decide which light level SensaDigital should maintain through the day, and if the sensor should switch the lighting Off if there is enough daylight. You remain present. Bright daylight. Lights dimmed to minimum. 13 Local override • Just use the SensaDigital infra-red handheld controller SENSA SENRC to override SensaDigital – very convenient especially in office applications, where you can change the lighting allocated to your desk only. • If you use the recessed mounted version of the remote SensaDigital head you have the additional possibility to override SensaDigital, using a standard momentary action switch (mounted next to the room entry). Its functions are On/Off (short press alternating) and brighter/dimmer (long press alternating). How it works: + (short press) = On + (long press) = brighter − (short press) = Off − (long press) = dimmer Parameter setting for tailormade functionality The default settings supplied are appropriate for most applications, however you have the facility to re-programme a wide range of parameters, and to set the regulating light level, using the SensaDigital infra-red programming tool SENSA SENP. A particularly useful feature is that you are able to change the parameters without touching the installation. It is, therefore fast, hassle-free and non-disruptive to room users: The programming is carried out remotely and hence can be operated from the ground. Light level, time delay to switch Off, start-up level, fading, operation mode (auto or semiauto) etc. can be set. 14 RotaryDIM SwitchLite SensaDigital Maintained illuminance level Maintenance Required normal illumuminance Energy savings through dimming of surplus capacity Solicitor’s practice comprising the solicitor’s single office and the partners’ group office: • The lighting in both offices is presence-linked and dimmed according to the incoming daylight. The specified illuminance level is 500lx and has to be maintained. Furthermore the lighting is faded to Off 10min after the last detection. Illuminance SensaDigital maintains illuminance over the entire period, saving the energy that conventional systems waste by providing more light than necessary to ensure the right light level until the lamps are changed and the luminaire is cleaned. Therefore SensaDigital is the right tool to fulfill the objectives of many international and local lighting standards regarding light level and energy consumption. SensaDigital application example Illuminance in accordance with age and soiling of lamp Maintenance interval The group office uses two remote SensaDigital heads each controlling two recessed fittings each. The heads are operated in semi-automatic mode, that means the light has to be switched On manually (a manual override is provided by two momentary action switches), but is switched Off after detecting absence. • The single office uses two suspended luminaires in a ‘mother-daughter’ arrangement, one incorporating a MiniSensaDigital head, the other connected to it via DSI. Additionally an infra-red handheld controller enables manual override.
