THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, WEST INDIES ST. AUGUSTINE CAMPUS LIBRARIES CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE (CMS) 16th Edition Author-Date References — Examples & Variations INTRODUCTION The following examples illustrate citations using the author-date format. Each example of a reference list entry is accompanied by an example of a corresponding in-text citation. The 16th edition offers expanded information on producing electronic publications, including web-based content and e-books. In cases of ambiguity, the formats in this document are the ones that the UWI STA Librarians have agreed upon. In-text citations: o Refer to the following examples. o Place the source details closest to the cited, quoted material. o Include page numbers when applicable and where available. Reference lists: o Refer to the following example. o Begin the list of references on a new page. o Title the page “REFERENCES” (top, centre). o For theses and dissertations, single spacing must be used within entries and double-spacing between entries. 2012-04-24; Updated 2014-05-02 3 In-text Citations • Example 1 (CMS 15.25): As Edward Tufte (2001, 139) points out, “A graphical element may carry data information and also perform a design function usually left to non-data-ink.” • Example 2 (CMS 15.26): Complexion figures prominently in Morgan’s descriptions. When Jasper compliments his mother’s choice of car (a twelvecylinder Mediterranean roadster with leather and wood-grained interior), “his cheeks blotch indignantly, painted by jealousy and rage” (Chaston 2000, 47). On the other hand, his mother’s mask never changes, her “even-tanned good looks” (56), “burnished visage” (101), and “air-brushed confidence” (211) providing the foil to the drama in her midst. • Example 3 (CMS 15.24): Recent literature has examined long-run price drifts following initial public offerings (Ritter 1991; Loughran and Ritter 1995), stock splits (Ikenberry, Rankine, and Stice 1996), seasoned equity offerings (Loughran and Ritter 1995), and equity repurchases (Ikenberry, Lakonishok, and Vermaelen 1995). 2012-04-24; Updated 2014-05-02 4 REFERENCES Athiyaman, Adee. 1984. “Strategic Choices in the International Hospitality Industry.” In The International Hospitality Industry: Structure, Characteristics and Issues, edited by Bob Brotherton, 142-160. However, in works that offer the occasional legal reference, authors may prefer to present certain legal materials (cases, legislation and treaties) in a format that includes tables of cases, statutes and treaties, along with in-text citations. No corresponding reference list entries are needed. For those who require in-text citations and reference list entries, the compilers of this handout have created the following examples. These examples are only for use within The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus community. CASES Reported Case In-text citation In the case R v.
