Types of Instant Challenges
Performance-Based: The focus is to create and perform
a theatrically-oriented solution for the Appraisers.
Teams may use words, language, conversations to solve
the Challenge or the solution may be non-verbal.
Task-Based: The focus is on the team working together
to build, move, change, protect or communicate with
provided materials in order to complete a task. Teams may
or may not be allowed to talk during the Challenge.
Many Instant Challenges are a blend between
Performance-Based and Task-Based.
Humor is always important!
General Tips
• Speak loudly and clearly
• Know where you are getting points. Work hardest on the part
that gives you the most points.
• Use your teammates strengths. Who can build? Who can tell
a story?
• Listen to instructions carefully. If unsure, ASK questions.
• Watch the time!
• Teamwork points are “gimme” points. Argue and you lose
them.

The Fling Thing
Challenge: Build a device that will send a cotton ball as far as possible through the air.
Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your imagination to build your device and up to 1 minute to propel
the cotton ball.
The Scene: Candy Cottonball has been hired by your employer, Brainy and Bomber Circus, as its newest
attraction. Your team is part of the maintenance crew assigned to design and build a device that will fling
Candy Cottonball through the air as far as possible so she can dazzle the audience with her graceful landing.
With the materials provided, you must design and build your Fling Thin g that will launch Ms Cottonball. A
team member may not touch Candy Cottonball during the launch. Your score will depend on how far from the
device she lands.
Set-up: the materials you team will use in its solution are placed on a table.
Materials: 2 cotton balls, 1 balloon, 2 corks, 1 rubber band, 2 paper clips, 1 piece of aluminum foil, 2 coffee
stirrers, 2 straws, 2 twist ties.
Scoring: You will receive:
2 points for each inch between launch and landing.
Up to 20 points for the creativity of your device
Up to 20 points for how well your team works together.
Team Assessment
Concurrent Towers
Challenge: Your task is to BUILD two towers as tall as possible, with each tower using as many types of
materials as possible that are different from each other.
Time: You will have one minute to plan and discuss your strategy, and four minutes to build your two towers.
Set-Up: In the center of the room is a table with materials to build your towers. On each side of the room,
there is a table on which a square is taped.
Procedure
Part 1: (1 minute) Plan and discuss your strategy about how to build the two towers. You may not touch the
materials at this time.
Part 2: (4 minutes) Build two towers as tall as possible. Build one tower inside each taped square. Whichever
tower is shortest will be measured when points are awarded for height. Use as many types of materials as
possible for each tower that are different from the other tower, since points will be awarded for the types of
materials in each tower that are different from each other
Materials: 4 mailing labels 4 craft sticks 4 straws 2 Styrofoam cups 4 note cards 4 paper clips 2 chenille
stems 4 rubber bands 1 piece of hook-and-loop tape 2 plastic forks
Scoring: You will receive A. 2 points (30 points maximum) for each inch of height of the shortest tower B. 3
points (30 points maximum) for each type of material used in one tower that is not used in the other tower C.

Concurrent Towers
For the Appraisers only:
Set-up: 1. Set up the tables according to the following diagram.

2. Each piece of hook-and-loop tape measures 2-1/2 inches. Use the sew-on variety, both halves.
Notes:
1. The team may either divide into two groups and work on both towers at once, or work on only one tower at a time. Each
strategy has it benefits and pitfalls.
2. Team members should communicate with each other about the size of each tower as well as the materials used in each tower.
3. To make more difficult, change the scoring for “A” to read:
A. 1 point (30 points maximum) for each inch of height of the shortest tower

Portrait Frame
Challenge: Your challenge is to create a Portrait within the framed grid area by following certain rules.
Time: You will have 5 minutes to plan your portrait, and 2 minutes to create it.
Set-up: There is a framed area on which you will hang cards. There is also a taped-off area on the floor called the cre8 area.
Procedure: You have been hired by Cre8tive Pictures to create a Portrait, made only of cards, to be sold by charity.
However, by Cre8tive Pictures has some rules that they want you to follow, but leaves it up to you about which and how many rules you
follow.
During the first part of the Challenge, you will have 5 minutes to plan which rules to use and how to create your picture outside of the cre8
area.
During the second part of this Challenge, you will place your note cards onto the hung framed area without any verbal communication.
Only one team member at any time can be in the cre8 area.
Before the end of the second part of this Challenge, you must write on a piece of paper what rules you plan on following.
For the purposes of this Challenge, Portrait means a picture.
Materials:
2 sheets of paper
1 pencil
16- 2-inch x 2-inch pink cards
16- 2-inch x 2-inch blue cards
16- 2-inch x 2-inch green cards
16- 2-inch x 2-inch yellow cards
None of the cards or the pencil may be damaged or modified in any way.
Scoring: You will receive up to:
A. 3 points for each rule successfully used (up to 30 points total)
B. 10 points if all rules are successfully used
C. 30 points for the creativity of the Portrait
D. 15 points for how well your team works without verbal communication to create the portrait.
E. 15 points for how well your team works together.
For Appraisers
Set-Up:
1. Place the framed grid upright (felt-covered 27-inch by 27-inch cardboard with grid). Tape
a 3-foot by 2-foot area just in front of the grid, this is the cre8 area.
2. To make easier: Use second frame that leaves a 6-foot by 6-foot framed grid area, Easy
Rules, and 9 cards per color.
3. To make more difficult: Use Advanced Rules.
4. Note: you have 4 extra cards of each color (20 total per color). It is intentional that there
are not enough cards to cover all available space in the Standard and Advanced rules

Never Mime This
Challenge: Your team must perform a skit. Where some of your members cannot move and other members
cannot talk.
The non-talking members will act the skit out, while the other members will talk for them.
Time: You will have 6 minutes to prepare your skit and 2 minutes to perform it.
The Scene: Your team is a human puppet group that travels around performing humorous skits. You use no
props and your non-talking members act out the scene while your speaking members talk for them. The nontalking members cannot talk or make any sounds to enhance your skit. Chose any topic from the list below
that you wish to make a skit about and give your skit a creative name.

Challenge: Build a warning device and create a scene in which the device is used.
Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your imagination to build your device and plan your scene and up
to 2 minutes to present your scene and the device.
The Scene: your team has just been hired by the Bell and Whistles engineering fir, specializing in warning
systems. Their newest client, Mr. Gotrocks, has commissioned you to design a warning device for his top secret
project. Your team must create the warning device and demonstrate to Mr. Gotrocks how it prevent disaster
from his particular top secret project.
Materials: Scissors (may be used to work with materials, but may not be part of the final solution)
Aluminum foil, balloon, twist tie, paper bag
Scoring: You will receive:
Up to 20 points for the creativity of your warning device

There is a plate with make-believe radioactive samples.
Taking turns, each team member must remove one ball at a time from the plate and place it into the
carton. You may only use the items provided. Once an item has been used, it must be discarded
and cannot be used again. If two or more items are combined, all must be discarded after each use.
They are considered radioactive once they touch the samples.
Materials: envelope, scissors, wire tie, straw, pencil, pen, small plastic bag, mailing label, chenille stick,
string, paper, cup, craft stick

Bridge the Dots
Challenge: Your TASK is to make a bridge that connects colored dots.
Time: You will be given 6 minutes to make your solution.
Procedures: You will be given materials to make a bridge that connects colored dots. You will also be given a
scissors, but the scissors may not be part of your final solution. Your solution must have one end touching in
the start area and it must be one continuous bridge. Any part of the bridge must touch a dot to receive a
score. Toothpicks and paper clips may touch anywhere. If the paper or mailing label touches the table (score
board), where there is not dot, the bridge will end there. You may not alter the dots. There is a bonus for
connecting dots on the upper level.

Big, Light and Fragile
Challenge: Your task is make one or more structures that will support as many plastics
eggs, inflated balloons, and one real egg.
Time: You will have 8 minutes to use your Imagination to discuss strategy, build and test
your solution.
Procedure: use the materials provided to make one or more structures to support plastic
eggs, balloons and one real egg. You will be given scissors and a ruler to use for building,
however, they may not be part of your final solution. Each balloon and egg must be a
minimum of 3 inches above the table in order to be scored.
Materials: 1 cup of marshmallows, 10 toothpicks, 30 pieces of spaghetti, 4 labels, 4
straws.
Scoring:
Each balloon supported will receive 5 points (5 points x 5 balloons) for a total of 25 points
Each plastic egg supported will receive 2 points (2 points x 25 eggs) for a total of 50 points
You will receive 15 points if the real egg is supported
You will receive up to 10 points for how well your team works together
M&M Sort
Procedure: You will have 5 minutes to complete Part I and 2 additional minutes to
complete Part II.
You may talk during Part 1, but no talking is allowed in Part II.
In Part II, you will divide your team in two groups: communicators and sorters
Challenge: Devise a system to communicate with each other that will allow a blindfolded
member(s) of your team to sort colored M&Ms onto the same color paper.
In Part I, you will be given the M&Ms and signaling materials to practice with.
After Part !, the sorter (s) will move to the tables and the communicators will move away form
them.
Time will begin and the signalers will communicate without talking or vocal sounds.
Materials: ruler, pencil, cup, spoon
Scoring: You will receive 2 points for each M&M that is placed on the correct colored paper.
FOIL CREATURES
Your TASK is to create a creature(s) out of foil and then present a PERFORMANCE in which you tell a story involving the
creature(s).
Time:
You will have up to 5 minutes to create your creature and plan your PERFORMANCE, and up to 2 minutes to present your
PERFORMANCE.
Materials:
12 Foil Sheets, A piece of paper and a pencil will be available for your team to use as you plan and
present your PERFORMANCE.
Scoring: You will receive up to
A.20 points for the creativity of your creature.
B.20 points for the creativity of your story about the creature.
C.20 points for how creatively you use the foil.
D.20 points for the creativity of your PERFORMANCE.
E.20 points for how well your team works together.
You can start by having each person create something out of foil. Improvise with the foil creations – turn them upside
down, pass them around, etc.
Then have them do this challenge.
Extra: create multiple “creatures” and a song – a creature alphabet for example.
NOTE: you may want to ask the team to sing the song in English – not “creature language” or at least have someone
translate…

Performance Based IC
Never Ending Story
Challenge: Your team is must present a humorous performance which includes a
never ending story using the materials provided as props.
Time: You will be given 2 minutes to use your Imagination and discuss your
strategy and 3 additional minutes to present your solution.
Procedure: the team member on my left will chose a prop and say something
about it to begin the story. Then you must take turns, in sequence, adding to the
story. Each response must be a minimum of one sentence. You may not skip your
turn or pass. Prop items may be used more than once. You may not break any of
the prop items. You may also give a response without a prop item.
Scoring:
Each response that continues the story will receive 1 point.
Creative or humorous responses that continue the story will receive 3 points.
Creative or humorous responses that continue the story and use a prop will
receive 5 points.
The overall quality of the story will receive up to 10 points.
How well your team works together will receive up to 10 points.
Hybrid -Silent Movie
Challenge: Present a PERFORMANCE in which your team acts out a silent movie with subtitles.
For the purposes of this challenge, “subtitles” are dialogue that is written out for the audience to read.
Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your IMAGINATION to plan your PERFORMANCE. You then will have up to 2
minutes to present your PERFORMANCE to the Appraisers.
The Scene: In silent movies there is no sound. Instead of listening to the dialogue, it is written on the screen for the
audience to read.
• Part One (5 minutes): Create a silent PERFORMANCE where you use subtitles instead of talking.
• Part Two (2 minutes): Present your PERFORMANCE to the appraisers. No team member may talk during Part Two.
Materials:
You will be given two sheets of poster board, a pair of scissors, and 4 markers to use to make your subtitles in Part One. All
props should be imaginary. A piece of paper and a pencil will be available for your team to use as you plan and
present your PERFORMANCE.
Scoring: You will receive up to:
A. 25 points for the creativity of your PERFORMANCE.
B. 30 points for the creativity of your subtitles.
C. 25 points for how ell you tell a story in your PERFORMANCE.
D. 20 points for how well your team works together.
You can brainstorm a list of movie titles first, then do the challenge. The titles do not have to be real!
Light it up

Procedure: Use the materials provided to protect a light bulb when
dropped from 6 feet to a hard surface.
You will have 3 minutes to discuss the problem and develop a solution.
Then you will test your solution.
Materials: One envelope, one piece of string, one mailing label, one
rubber band, one piece of paper.
Scoring:
– 20 points if the glass is not broken
– 30 points if the bulb lights
– 30 points if the bulb stays lit for 15 seconds
– 20 points for how well your team works together
this can be done with a Christmas ornament or anything breakable.
Change scoring, depending on the “level of breakage.”

Structure
Connection
Challenge: Your TASK is to connect two bricks in as many different ways as possible.
Time: You will have up to 6 minutes to connect the bricks for score.
Set-up: In the middle of the room are two bricks. In addition, there is a table with materials.
Procedure:
Use the materials to connect the two bricks. The bricks may not be moved. You will be told when you
have one minute remaining and 30 seconds remaining. You will receive score only for , connections
that exist after ten seconds, are made of more than one material, do not touch any other
connections, and do not touch the floor.
Materials:

The mailing labels may NOT be attached to the bricks. The bricks may not be altered.

This debrief should ask what are we getting points for? How may
materials must be used for each connection? How many
connections receive score?
Sock it to me
Challenge: Your team is Your team is to present a PERFORMANCE in which you use
team created puppets to tell a story.
Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your Imagination to make your book cover
and plan, make puppets and practice your skit and up to two minutes to present your
performance to the Appraisers.
The Scene: Use team created sock puppets to help you tell a story that has a
beginning, middle and end.
Materials: socks, rubber bands, colored markers
Scoring: You will receive up to:
•10 points if your performance has a beginning, middle and end.
•5 points (20 points maximum) for each puppet used in your performance.
•Up to 20 points for the creativity of your puppets.
•Up to 30 points for the creativity of your performance.
•Up to 20 points for how well your team works together
The Cover
Challenge: Most books have a picture on the cover to attract a reader’s attention. Your task is to
create a book cover for a story and then create a presentation of the story in the book.
Time: You will have up to 5 minutes to use your Imagination to make your book cover and plan
your Performance and up to two minutes to present your performance to the Appraisers.
The Scene: The Destination Imagination Project Outeach teams collected books for a Children’s
hospital and they want to get the children to read the books. They have asked your team to
create a book cover and present a short skit about the book.
You should also think of 3 imaginary props to use in your skit.
You must write down the 3 props on a sheet of paper and give the paper to the Appraisers before
you do your skit.
Materials: 1 piece of paper colored markers
Scoring: You will receive up to:
10 points for the creativity of your story
20 points for the creativity of your book cover
10 points (30 points maximum) for the creativity of each of your imaginary props
20 points for the creativity of your Performance
20 points for how well your team works together
Communication
Procedure: You will have 5 minutes to complete Part I and 2 additional minutes to
complete Part II.
You may talk during Part 1, but no talking is allowed in Part II.
In Part II, you will divide your team in two groups: communicators and assemblers
Challenge: Devise a system to communicate with teach other that will allow you to assemble various nuts,
washers, etc onto the bolts provided. Additional points will be awarded if they are in the correct order.
In Part I, you will be given the items and signaling materials to practice with.
After Part !, the assemblers will move to the tables and the communicators will move away form them.
In Part II, each assembler should be given: 1 bolt, 3 nuts, 6 washers, 2 wing nuts, 2 rubber washers and 4 lock
washers.
The appraiser will give the communicators a chart showing the correct placement of the various items.
Time will begin and the signalers will communicate visually – no talking , vocal sounds, writing, letters) with body
signals and/or provided materials.
The communicators may not show the scoring chart to the assemblers.
The assemblers may not signal back or look at each other’s work.
Materials: Hardware, yardstick, pencil, yarn, can

bonus points items placed in the correct position.
Give the team a practice card with a picture of a bolt with the various washers and nuts – you can have
as few as 4 items to be assembled. Change the card for “scoring.”

Appraising Teamwork
When observing Teamwork, the following elements become evident:
1. Cooperative Spirit:
Positive attitudes and reinforcement of all team members
Absence of negativism.
2. Team-Identified Roles:
Tasks may be divided equally among the team
A leader’s role is identified immediately or at some point in time.
Roles may have been pre-assigned prior to arrival at Challenge site.
3. Acceptance of Ideas of Others
Sharing of ideas

4. Diversity of Ideas

5. Ability to work through disagreements in a constructive rather than destructive manner.

IC Procedures

A minimum of two team members must participate in the Instant Challenge.
Teams must make a decision about which team members will be participating
before being taken to the competition room. Your team will NOT be told anything
about the Instant Challenge, including what kind of Instant Challenge they will be
given, before you make this decision.
One Team Manager, may accompany your team to the Instant Challenge
competition room, but that Team Manager may not advise, signal or
communicate with your team or the Appraisers during the Instant Challenge
competition.
The decision of whether or not your Team Manager will accompany your team to
the Instant Challenge competition room is made by the members of your team
before you enter the room.
If a Team Manager manages two teams in the same Team Challenge and the same
Level, the Team Manager cannot go into the Instant Challenge room at the
tournament
More Procedures
During your Instant Challenge time:
•a. Your team MAY bring timing devices into the Instant Challenge room and use them, as long
as the devices don’t beep or make noise.
•b. Your team may not use any items in your Instant Challenge other than items provided by the
Instant Challenge officials.
•c. If you or your team members have questions about your Instant Challenge, you are welcome
to ask them, but you may only do this once Time has begun. There will usually NOT be a
period of time set aside specifically for questions.
•d. Your team MAY ask the Timekeeper how much time is remaining in any part of an Instant
Challenge, unless the Instant Challenge says otherwise.
•e. Your team MAY NOT alter taped or marked areas in any way unless the Instant
Challenge says otherwise.
•7. If the Appraisers feel that your team is working under an obvious misconception, they will
attempt to clarify the Challenge without aiding in the solution. “Read the Rules”
The Promise
“We promise not to talk about the Instant
Challenge or what we did in our solution UNTIL
AFTER GLOBAL FINALS. If we are heard or are
found to have shared this Challenge with
anyone, we will be disqualified from the
tournament. However, we can talk about it
privately among our team and Team
Manager(s).”
In the Room
“Welcome to the Instant Challenge portion of our tournament! Anything is possible here, and you
will have the opportunity to use the problem solving tools you have learned. For every team who
is competing in your Team Challenge at your competition Level, we will be presenting this Instant
Challenge today.”
You will then be given your Instant Challenge instructions and be told to begin. Your team must
not begin solving the Instant Challenge until the Appraisers have finished reading it. Your team
will receive a copy of your Instant Challenge so that you can read along when the Appraisers are
reading the Challenge to you.
When time ends, an Appraiser will call “Time!” and your team must stop working on your
solution. Keep in mind that many Challenges have more than one timed segment (e.g., Part One,
Part Two, etc.). Continuing to work on any part after time has been called may prevent your
team from receiving score in that segment of the Challenge and may prevent your team from
moving on to the next part of the Challenge. At the end of the Challenge, your team will be
reminded to not discuss or talk about the Instant Challenge with anyone other than your team,
and to only discuss it with your team if you can do so in a private place.

• Connect – build a bridge between tables
• Support – add weight to a structure or bridge (use golf balls for weights)
• Extend – make the longest line you can, make the tallest tower possible
• Control – use materials to guide balls from one end of the table to the
other (maybe use cups as targets) – you can roll the balls on the table
• Transport – move balls from one end of the table to the other; balls
cannot touch the table
• Combo: Build a tower that contains a ball inside it and holds a ball on top
• Protect: No need to do this one – they are already doing Protect the ball
Debrief
• Talk about what worked
• Do the challenge again and let them choose
the “correct materials?”
• Choose each verb and discuss which material
would be best for the job and why
