EXTERNAL EXAMINER for Microelectronics with Embedded Technology
Name:
Prof Dr WQ Yang
Position: Professor of Electronic Instrumentation, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The
University of Manchester , UK.
Background Info:
An award of DTI Technology Programme funding has generated two RA posts for a period of three years each,
working with two industrial partners. One post is in CFD and dual modality ECT/ERT, and the other in microwave
impedance and velocity sensors. The deadline for application is 15 March 2008.
Professor Wuqiang Yang graduated from Tsinghua University in Beijing, BEng with Distinction 1982, MSc 1985 and
PhD with Distinction 1988. After three years being a Lecturer at Tsinghua University, he joined Industrial Process
Tomography Group in Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at UMIST as Research Associate/Fellow
and now he is Professor of Electronic Instrumentation with Sensing, Imaging and Signal Processing Group. He is also
a Course Organiser of MSc in Sensors and Electronic Instrumentation. His current research is focused on industrial
process tomography, especially electrical capacitance tomography (ECT). He has been invited by many universities,
research institutions and international conferences worldwide to give lectures/seminars/keynotes on ECT and its
industrial applications. He will be giving the next seminar at Bath University. For his contribution to the development
of ECT technology, he was awarded the 1997 IEE/NPL Wheatstone Measurement Prize.
He has published over 180 scientific papers, which are recognised by several awards, including the 1997 Honeywell
Prize from the Institute of Measurement and Control and the 2000 IEE Ayrton Premium. He has 9 granted patents,
including two international patents, which have been licensed to industry. He is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of IEE
and Senior Member of IEEE. His biography has been included in Who's Who in Science and Engineering since 2002,
Who's Who in the World since 2003, Who’s Who in America, 2009 edition, International Who's Who of
Professionals since 2003, Dictionary of International Biography since 2004, and International Blue Book since 2005.
He received Global Research Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering and took sabbatical leave at
