Dear Saltfleet School community,
First semester is more than half done, and the holidays are just around the corner. Looking back, it is amazing how many achievements and accomplishments we have been able to achieve! Our extra curriculars are in full swing with the Girls Field Hockey team placing 5 th in OFSAA, the Senior Girls
Basketball team were finalists in the City Championships, and the Football team won the City Championships. With many other teams finishing strong this fall, we are definitely proud to be a ‘Storm’!
In addition to our successful athletic start, our Music Department has begun to showcase to the province their talents by being invited to play at the Provincial Music Conference. Their cameo performance is an amazing honour and is a testament to the hard work that has been put into the Music Department by staff and students. As well, our DECA team (Business competition for all students) recently came back from Regionals with 19 medals and are poised to do well at their next competition.
If you were lucky enough to visit the school during one of our Drama presentations, you would have seen AMAZING performances in the student written and directed Halloween show, as well as the
Remembrance Day assembly. Our students are multi-dimension, not only in the classroom, but in other areas around the school!
For the grade 9 students, many events have already taken place to make them feel a part of our school community. The kick-off orientation at the end of August permitted us to learn who they were and explore some of the interests and skills they could bring to the school. After the grade 9 breakfast in
October, it was clear to see that Saltfleet is in good hands in the years to come. The enthusiasm and spirit was easy to pick up on!
Our staff has been busier than ever learning new skills and strategies in order to help students and provide rich learning experiences. We recently came together with two other schools to share our own strategies and form valuable learning communities. I am continually amazed at the dedication and commitment our staff has to the students at Saltfleet, and can’t wait to see what is coming up for the remainder of the year.
The Addition is now moving ahead nicely with plans to break ground in the Spring. It will bring with it ten new classrooms designed for the 21 st Century that will include integrated technology, audio/ visual aids and an opportunity for an increased student population. While construction is in progress, we will lose access to the west parking lot, however, Project Engineers will ensure that the construction will have a minimal impact on our school routine. This exciting addition is a needed project that will allow us to continue with delivering education to our growing school community.
On behalf of Ms. Gallant, Mr. Hopman, and myself, we are thankful for the support and involvement that we see every day from our school community. Our students are the best and our staff is amazing.
Saltfleet is ‘the place to be’! Continue to let us know how we can support you and your endeavours.
Sincerely,
Kevin Graham

HWDSB – Board Policy regarding Reporting of Marks Below 50%
The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning.
Knowing our students is fundamental to the best assessment, evaluation and reporting practices.
Lower limits are put in place as a communication tool to promote student success. They indicate to parents, students, and educators including guidance counsellors, administration, student success teams and the teacher that additional learning is required. During reporting times, this is one more indicator that more work needs to be done and next steps need to be put in place giving the message that there is hope for the student to be successful.
Students can acquire this additional learning through:
classroom interventions
program changes credit recovery summer school repeating the course
If your child has a mark below 50%, you will see one of the following codes:
40 Indicating additional evidence of learning is required.
30 - Indicating significant additional evidence of learning is required.
0 - Indicating there has been no evidence of learning.
The following lower limits indicate that because of the individual circumstances of a student, there is insufficient evidence to determine a grade:
I - Used in grades 9 and 10 courses.
25 - Used in grades 11 and 12 courses.
Please contact the school if you have any questions or would like to address an individual situation regarding your child.
The following statement from the Ministry of Education’s Growing Success document speaks to the importance of on-going communication with parents/guardians and students as a step towards overall success.
“Although there are two formal reporting periods for a semestered course… communication with parents and students about student achievement should be continuous throughout the course, by means such as parent-teacher or parent-student-teacher conferences, portfolios of student work, student-led conferences, interviews, phone calls, checklists, and informal reports. Communications about student achievement should be designed to provide detailed information that will encourage students to set goals for learning, help teachers to establish plans for teaching, and assist parents in supporting learning at home.”

Positively Powerful: Your Actions Count!
Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is November 18-22, 2013
At Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), research is telling us that about 30 per cent of students are bullied on a regular basis,
20 per cent of students admit to bullying others on a regular basis and that 85 per cent of the time, that bullying happens there are other people watching.
This must stop – and it can.
HWDSB will join Ontario school boards to recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week from Nov. 18 to 22, 2013. Schools will receive original poster art to display and encourage anti-bullying efforts. We continue to use peer mediation and restorative justice in our schools.
HWDSB is expanding its mobile phone app TipOff to support even more schools with a tool for receiving anonymous bullying reports.
With our partners, we are supporting a talk by Tracy Vaillancourt, Ph.D. (UBC), Professor and Canada Research Chair, Children’s Mental
Health and Violence Prevention, University of Ottawa for parents, educators, students, community members. On Nov. 19, 2013, she will speak on the topic of Bullying and Mental Health in the Hamilton Spectator Auditorium (44 Frid Street, Hamilton). Find full details in a flyer posted here: http://goo.gl/CfW5vQ
This year’s theme is: Positively Powerful: Your Actions Count!
In addition to these events, here are some useful tips from HWDSB Social Work Services.
What can I do if my child is the victim of bullying?
Ask your child directly.
Listen.
Tell the school or childcare facility immediately.
Resist being overprotective.
Teach your child the social skills he/she needs to make friends.
Encourage your child to seek spare-time activities.
Teach children ways to resolve arguments without violent words or actions.
Talk about and practice assertiveness skills.
Seek help from school social workers or psychologists via your school principal; reach children’s mental health facilities by calling CONTACT Hamilton at (905) 570-8888 or info@contacthamilton.ca
What can I do if I suspect my child may be bullying others?
Take the problem seriously.
Talk to your child.
Tell your child that you will not tolerate this kind of behavior.
Arrange for an effective, non-violent consequence.
Establish a few family rules and stick to them.
Spend more time with your child.
Increase your supervision of your child’s activities and whereabouts.
Talk to his/her teacher and or principal.
Seek help from school social workers or psychologists via your school principal; reach children’s mental health facilities by calling CONTACT Hamilton at (905) 570-8888 or info@contacthamilton.ca
What can I do if I suspect my child may be a bystander to bullying?
Encourage your child to empathize with the victim; step into their shoes.
Help your child to understand that there is a difference between 'tattling' and 'reporting'.
Accompany your child to the teacher or principal if they decide to report what they have witnessed.
Encourage your child to mobilize his/her friends to join together to protect the victim.
Explain to your child that bullying does not 'toughen people up' but can cause real emotional and physical harm.
Encourage your child to find friends who value kindness and integrity.
Behave with kindness, integrity and courage yourself, whenever you have the opportunity.
Encourage your child when they accept responsibility for their own behavior.

Monday November 18th: "Proud to Be Me."
Positive Space students walked around dressed as giant sandwich boards that read, "I am proud to be me because..." They approached students, offering them a Post-It and asking them to finish the statement. Students stuck their Post-Its on the sandwich board...The board was full of amazing responses!
Tuesday, November 19th: Free Hugs!
A booth was set up and "Free Hug Cards" were handed out. The cards read, "This card entitles you to a free hug." Images of people hugging were on each card (girl hugging girl, boy hugging boy, girl hugging boy, a group of friends hugging each other). Origami rainbow hearts were also given to people who provide a donation (that will go towards Rainbow Prom).
Wednesday, November 20th:
Graffiti Boards
Graffiti boards (with rainbows painted on them) were placed in
3 different locations around the school. Students were encouraged to write on these boards.
Messages were about bullying, mental health, LGBTQI, equity, courage, confidence and more!
Friday, November 22nd: "Walk with Confidence"
Positive Space did a "Walk with Confidence" around the school campus. Students were encouraged to join in and realize they can be who they are without the fear of being judged. During the walk, students wore things that made them feel happy and showed off how unique they are. The goal was to redefine what is considered "normal ."
Thursday, November 21st: Cupcake Sale
Pink cupcakes were sold. A poster board with LGBTQI information was displayed. Students handed out papers about the origins of specific terms (that have evolved into homophobic language) to raise awareness. Students handed out a "Letter to My Bully," which depicted a true letter someone has written to their bully. Students also handed out a declaration entitled, "Free to Be Me," which students were encouraged to sign.
Annual Ski Trip
It’s a snowstorm! Join Saltfleet as we travel to Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec January 27-31, 2014 four days of fantastic skiing and snowboarding! The mountain is part of the Laurentian mountain chain, 66 trails covering 69 kilometers on three different sides of the mountain.
The excursion includes accommodation at the spectacular Chateau Mont Sainte Anne, transportation, and lift tickets. All rooms have kitchenettes for cooking. The cost is $520.00 with a security deposit of $60.00. The trip will also include an afternoon in historic Quebec City.
The Saltfleet Ski experience has a 25 year tradition of ski trips throughout North America visiting Vermont, New York, and Quebec. Saltfleet School and the greater Stoney Creek community are dedicated to students leading a healthy active lifestyle which places great emphasis on mind, body and spirit. The overnight ski trip develops confidence in students through skill building, self-reliance and leadership initiatives.
Students gain an understanding of the importance of physical fitness, health, and well-being during the trip. They have the opportunity to initiate a lifelong personal commitment to daily vigorous physical activity and positive health behaviours. Participants experience personal growth through the practice and mastery of the skills required for skiing or snowboarding.
Please see Mr. O’Connor (Ms. Mills, Ms. Harvey) in A203 for more information and permission forms.
Congratulations to the Saltfleet Senior Band who was invited to perform a CAMEO performance at the Ontario
Music Educator’s 2013 Conference in Niagara Falls. It is a huge honour to be invited and you sounded fantastic!

Also, Student Parliament is having a school wide magazine subscription fundraiser! Order forms were sent out on the Thursday November 14th to all students. If you did not receive information about the fundraiser, students can still get subscription packages from their home room teachers. The last day for orders to be handed in is December 4th! There are many prizes to be won and subscriptions make great Christmas presents! You can also subscribe online with the group name as Saltfleet and the money is still benefiting our school.
The money raised from this event will be used to support Saltfleet's Student Parliament in order to hold events and have fun and exciting activities for our school!
The third thing that Student Parliament is involved in this month, is that we are collecting gifts for the City Kids annual Christmas toy drive. The home room classes are involved in collecting NEW gifts for certain age groups. The toys will be collected on December 6th and brought to City Kids so that they can be distributed to families who are in need in Hamilton. This is a great way to be generous this Christmas! If your child's home room is not participating in the Toy Drive and you would like to participate, please feel free to send toys in with your student and they will be able to bring them to the Student Parliament office so that they will be included in the event. We are collecting toys for kids from the ages of 4-12.
News from the Math Department:
Semester one has been very busy for the math department as we have been working on assessment for the purpose of learning and descriptive feedback. Students have been learning the value of practice without the pressure of marks. Many teachers have also started their work with the e-learning platform Desire2Learn or D2L for short. Ask your child how they are using it!
The following is a reminder to all grade 9 students of the on-line supports available to them with their classroom work or preparing for EQAO.
Go to eqao.com and look under student resources for practice questions and solutions. Classroom questions can be answered at homeworkhelp.ilc.org as well as helpful video resources for the most common topics.
Looking ahead, all students interested in writing math contests this year should listen to the announcements in December for sign up and practice information.
Watch Saltfleet students, staff and all the exciting things happening around the school community!
Thanks to Ms. Erkkila and her CommTech students for their continuous work in capturing our student in action. http://schools.hwdsb.on.ca/saltfleet/ http://schools.hwdsb.on.ca/saltfleet/category/school-videos/
