Kotsons manufactures amorphous metal transformers in technical collaboration with Hitachi Met Glass Inc., the only producer of amorphous
metal in the world. We have set up a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and imported the latest equipment from M/S Bergers Machinenbau
GMBH, Germany, to produce most sophisticated and energy-efficient amorphous metal transformers. At Kotsons, Quality and Process
Performance are of vital importance and cores are annealed under absolute inert atmosphere to achieve lowest losses thus enhancing the
energy savings in comparison with similar manufacturing facilities across the globe.
Advantages
Specifications
• Energy efficient
•AMDT can reduce no-load losses by 80%. Since no-load losses are responsible for a major portion of the energy lost during power
distribution, amorphous metal transformers cut down on costs and help reduce carbon di-oxide emissions created during power
generation.
•Lower temperature
•Slower ageing of insulation
•Higher overloading capability
•Longer life
•Superior electrical performance under harmonious conditions
Kotsons manufactures conventional type, single phase, 50 Hz transformers. These are oil immersed,
naturally cooled, pole mounted/platform mounted, double wound with aluminium/copper, step up/step
down core type continuous duty transformers having no-load voltage ratio from 5 KVA to 167 KVA up to 33
KV Class. Each product comes with Class A insulation and is designed to withstand Short Circuit & Impulse
Test in accordance with ANSI/IEC/BS/IS. Completely self protected type transformers are also available for
protection on both HV & LV sides.
Please find below characteristics and dimensions of Kotsons Standard Transformers with regular fittings,

In order to achieve significant improvement in efficiency, amorphous metal is used for the transformer core. Amorphous metal exhibits a
unique random molecular structure unlike the rigid grain structure of the silicon steel. This, in turn, enables easy magnetization &
demagnetization, thereby reducing hysteresis loss. Further processing of amorphous metal in very thin lamination (approximately 1/10th of
silicon steel lamination thickness) enables significant reduction in eddy current losses.
AMDT advantages are not limited to loss reductions alone. Since these losses are converted into heat energy, cooling oil inside the transformer
tank will be heated up as well, and it will lead to emissions. AMDT enables utilities to reduce harmful emissions such as sulphur dioxide,
nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, the pollutants which cause acid rain & global warming.
A comparison between typical silicon steel distribution transformer, high-efficiency silicon steel distribution transformer &
amorphous metal distribution transformer (AMDT) is given below:

Description:
Kotsons manufactures a wide range of distribution and power transformers ranging from 25 KVA to 20
MVA with voltage class of 33 KV. These transformers can be free breathing or hermetically sealed. Conventional transformers are fitted with a
conservator with breather for free breathing while hermetically sealed ones come with bolted covers and without breathers. Hermetically
sealed transformers are totally maintenance free and are particularly suited for exposed outdoor environments such as moisture, salt or dust
laden atmosphere. They are used extensively in chemical plants and oil/gas terminals where poor accessibility makes regular maintenance
undesirable. Transformers immersed in synthetic coolants are suitable for indoors with adequate ventilation or located near the load centre
where oil would not be considered environmentally acceptable.
The liquid-filled transformers can be supplied with cooling, either by corrugations on the side of the tank or by pressed steel radiators mounted
on the tank body. Transformers can be filled with either oil or one of several low-flammability synthetic fluids such as midel. Both types can be
supplied with HV and LV switchgears incorporated into substations.
Kotsons can supply conventional/hermetically sealed/bolted type, indoor/outdoor type, pole mounted/platform mounted, 3 phase, 50/60 Hz
transformers. These are oil immersed, ONAN/ONAF/OFWF cooled, step up/step down, double wound with aluminium/copper conductor,
continuous duty transformers from 5 KVA to 20 MVA up to 33 KV Class. Each product comes with Class A insulation and is designed to
withstand Short Circuit & Impulse Test in accordance with IEC/BS/ANSI/IS/NEEMA.

THREE PHASE TRANSFORMERS
THREE PHASE TRANSFORMERS
Amorphous Metal Transformers
Dry Type VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnated) Transformers
Kotsons develops amorphous metal transformers in technical collaboration with Hitachi Met Glass Inc., the only producer of amorphous metal
in the World. We have in place a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and imported the latest equipment from M/S Bergers Machinenbau
GMBH, Germany, to produce most sophisticated and energy-efficient amorphous metal transformers. At Kotsons, Quality and Process
Excellence are of crucial importance and cores are annealed under absolute inert atmosphere to achieve lowest losses thus enhancing the
energy savings in comparison with similar manufacturing facilities across the globe.
Type: Distribution & Power Transformers | Range: 100 KVA to 5000 KVA up to 33 KV Class
Advantages
Introduction
• Energy efficient
Kotsons is the first Indian manufacturer to use the DuPont ReliatraN® branded solution and develop Ventilated Dry Type Transformers in
collaboration with E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, U.S.A. ReliatraN® Transformers are produced by a network of ISO 9000 Certified
companies across the globe while UL® Certified Insulation Materials and Systems are used to meet highest international standards for Quality,
Design, Construction and Performance. Kotsons is the first and only Operating Licensed Manufacturer of DuPont's ReliatraN® brand
transformers in India.
• AMDT can reduce no-Load losses by 80%. Since no-load losses are responsible for a major portion of the energy lost during power
distribution, amorphous metal transformers cut down on costs and help reduce carbon di-oxide emissions created during power
generation.
• Lower temperature
• IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)
• IS (Indian Standards)
Advantages of ReliatraN® Transformers
• Slower ageing of insulation
• High level of safety
• Higher overloading capability
• No flammable liquid
• Longer life
• No pollution from leaks
• Superior electrical performance under harmonious conditions
• No toxic off-gas
Description:
• Can be placed close to the load
In order to achieve significant improvement in efficiency, amorphous metal is used for the transformer core. Amorphous metal exhibits a
unique random molecular structure unlike the rigid grain structure of the silicon steel. This, in turn, enables easy magnetization &
demagnetization, thereby reducing hysteresis loss. Further processing of amorphous metal in very thin lamination (approximately 1/10th of
silicon steel lamination thickness) enables significant reduction in eddy current losses.
• More efficient
AMDT advantages are not limited to loss reductions alone. Since these losses are converted into heat energy, cooling oil inside the transformer
tank will be heated up as well, and it will lead to emissions. AMDT enables utilities to reduce harmful emissions such as sulphur dioxide,
nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, the pollutants which cause acid rain & global warming.
• Low noise and low maintenance

Description
Kotsons manufactures Ventilated Dry Type Transformers ranging from 40 KVA to 5000 KVA with voltage class of 33 KV. These transformers are
fitted in enclosures conforming to IP21-33 (for indoor locations) and IP45 (for outdoors). Kotsons' Ventilated Dry Type Transformers are totally
maintenance free and safe from fire as the materials used include metals, ceramics, fibreglass and resin. Our products are also environmentfriendly as there is no oil usage leading to easier handling and zero spillages & leakages. Furthermore, there will be minimal non-toxic smoke
in case of a fire. Our transformers come with Class H or Class C insulation which can bear the heat up to 220°C and can be used in humid and
chemically polluted atmosphere.
Kotsons manufactures indoor/outdoor, 3 phase, 50/60 Hz transformers. These are resin impregnated, AN/FA cooled, step up/step down,
double wound with copper conductor transformers from 40 KVA to 5000 KVA up to 33 KV Class. Products come with H or C Class insulation
and are designed to withstand Short Circuit & Impulse Test in accordance with IEC/IS.
Process & Core
Core structure is made of non-aging, cold rolled grain-oriented and high-permeability silicon steel. All core laminations burr-free and staked
without gaps. The core assembly has a layer of protective paint for effective safeguard against corrosion.
Windings
LV & HV windings are done in dust-free, air conditioned winding shops. Rectangular copper strips are used for LV winding insulated with
Nomex® while HV windings are copper wires insulated with Nomex® or suitable materials for temperature rise if wrapping is not possible due
to small diameters.
VPI
Transformer coils are thoroughly dried in PLC-controlled ovens and then completely sealed with an insulating varnish/resin (Class H/C).
Kotsons has in place a state-of-the-art PLC-controlled VPI (vacuum pressure impregnation) plant where the entire operation is meticulously
carried out. The VPI process fully penetrates and seals the coils thus turning them into a high-strength composite unit for complete
environmental protection. As a result, these can be used in humid and chemically polluted atmospheres. Coils are then cured to develop
bonding.

Design and Development
Tank and Box Up
At Kotsons, design remains a strategic tool for translating users' requirements into real-life applications while development enables us to
deliver better technologies and enhanced performances. As design & development is a fast-evolving process, we leverage best technologies
and superior professional expertise to conceptualise most sophisticated equipment conforming to latest technical specifications and global
quality standards. Kotsons designs a comprehensive range of power and distribution transformers in compliance with the manufacturing
standards of the IS, IEC, ANSI, BS, AS, JIS, IEEE, DIN and NEMA. In a bid to focus more on improvements and innovations, high-speed systems
are also used to analyse and compare data so that on-field conditions can be successfully simulated to speed up actual execution. In-house
software development by qualified IT professionals is another vital step to ensure our design accuracy and reliability.
The tank is rectangular in shape and has corrugated wall panels on all sides for natural cooling. At Kotsons, the tank base, sides and frames are
seamlessly welded and meticulously checked for oil tightness and leaks. The tank cover includes thermometer pockets, bushings, a tap changer
drive and lifting lugs mounted on the cover. These lugs are sufficiently strong for lifting the entire transformer.
The transformer core and the windings assembly are put in the tank and fastened by nut and bolts with the help of a pneumatic wrench. Since
the connection items (bolts, nuts, bushing holders, studs etc.) on the tank cover and arching horns on the HV bushing are exposed to rust, these
are either made of stainless steel or especially surface-treated steel material. The cover gasket is made of high quality cork-rubber while unidirectional/bidirectional rollers are provided as per the client's request.
Surface Treatment and Painting
Ef fective Designing Helps to
• Specify maximum overall dimensions and weights
For effective protection against corrosion and rust, all steel part surfaces are shot-blasted in compliance with Swedish Standard SIS 055900 to
Sa 2.5 quality standards prior to painting. Tanks and steel parts are then painted with one primer and two final coats with minimum thickness of
160 microns.
• Assess specified performance characteristics such as impedance,
temperature rise, efficiency and noise levels
• Determine distribution of voltage stresses under impulses, lighting &
switching surge conditions
• Withstand thermal and dynamic effects of short circuit
• Analyse high electrical stress areas
• Minimise stray losses, hotspots and electrical gradients through electrical
and magnetic field analyses
• Estimate labour and material costs
Technical Consultancy
Leveraging three decades of experience and a strong R&D base, Kotsons offers premier Technical Consultancy services to the transformer
industry and helps set up state-of-the-art Manufacturing Facilities/Repair Shops. Owing to its strong competence and experience, the industry
leader is uniquely positioned to help you implement best practices and enable you to comply with global manufacturing and quality standards.

expertise in the following areas:
• Preparation of technical & project reports
• Determining land size (covered & uncovered) for Manufacturing/Repair facilities
• Plant & machinery commissioning
Core
• Plant & machinery supply
The magnetic core of the transformers is made of cold rolled grain oriented
magnetic steel laminations. We use Hi-B grade and laser scribed lamination to
reduce no-load losses and noise levels. Laminations are cut at 45° angles while
core leg and yoke laminations are interleaved in mitred joints to facilitate the
passage of the magnetic flux; avoid hot spots; and reduce no-load losses, no-load
current & noise levels.
• Raw materials sourcing and procurement
• Technical know-how supply for commercial production
Winding
The windings are designed to optimise dynamic, thermal, mechanical and electrical stresses depending upon current and voltage
requirements. Spiral, crossover, helical, continuous disc and partly/fully interleaved windings are used depending on the specific design
criteria. While steel winding mandrels are used to ensure tight tolerances, our winding machines are equipped with hydraulic braking devices
to ensure that proper tension is maintained on the winding. Dovetailed key spaces are employed to give the winding extra strength.
Axial and radial cooling ducts are installed between winding sections to allow free flow of oil around the conductor. Individual coils are dried
and hydraulically pressed to size in accordance with the calculated short circuit forces to obtain the design height and to guarantee full short
circuit resistance.
Assembly
The magnetic core, with windings and accessories fitted together, forms the active part of the transformer. The windings are slipped over the
legs of the core and the laminations of the upper yoke are interleaved. All connections between windings and bushings and connections
between the high-voltage tappings and the tap changer are now made. The tap changer allows increase/decrease of turns in the high-voltage
winding in order to compensate for a voltage drop or to adapt the transformer to an unstable supply so that the rated low voltage can be
maintained. Subsequently, the top cover with HV and LV bushings is fitted.
Vacuum Drying
A transformer should have no trace of moisture as this may lead to electrical flashover within the windings. Kotsons makes sure that the active
part of the transformer is completely dried before it is filled with oil under vacuum. The tank, with the active part in it, is connected to an oil
supply and placed inside a vacuum chamber. Once the required vacuum level is reached, oil is allowed to flow into the tank. The rising oil drives
out any remaining air and the active part is completely immersed.
