Thompson connected on the first shot and missed the second, but Dudzinski grabbed the rebound and was fouled while putting the ball back into the basket with three seconds left. Dudzinski was able to convert the three-point play, and the game went to overtime tied at 98-98. The Crusaders jumped out to a 105-100 lead in the first overtime period, before Glowiak made a layup and a three-pointer to tie the score at 105-105. The Crusaders own an overall record of 1327-903 (.595), while making 24 postseason tournament appearances — 12 trips to the NCAA Tournament and 12 to the National Invitation Tournament. In the history of collegiate basketball, Holy Cross is one of only 16 schools to have won the NCAA Tournament (1946-1947) as well as the National Invitational Tournament (1953-1954). Throughout its history, Holy Cross has had six first team All-America selections, sent 10 players to the National Basketball Association, had four players and coaches inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, had 23 players drafted by professional teams, had three players go on to coach professionally, and had 15 players who have coached in college. CRUSADERS LOOKING FOR SIXTH PATRIOT LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON TITLE: During the 2013-2014 campaign, Holy Cross will attempt to win the Patriot League regular season title for the sixth time in school history. The last championship for the Crusaders came in 2007, when they tied for first place in the conference with Bucknell, as both teams posted 13-1 records in league play. Prior to that, Holy Cross won outright Patriot League regular season titles in 2001, 2003 and 2005, while sharing the regular season championship in 1994. The Crusaders’ three outright titles are the second-most in league history, and Holy Cross’ five total championships are tied for the second-most in conference history with Navy (one outright, four shared), behind only Bucknell (five outright, three shared). Holy Cross’ previous tournament titles came in 2003 (72-64 over American), 2002 (58-54 at American), 2001 (68-64 over Navy in overtime) and 1993 (98-73 at Bucknell). The Crusaders’ five conference tournament championships are the most in Patriot League history, with Bucknell (2005, 2006, 2011 and 2013) ranking second. Holy Cross has also appeared in the championship game seven times in the last 12 years. Overall, the Crusaders have made a conference-record 10 appearances in the Patriot League championship game. HOLY CROSS SHINES ON THE DEFENSIVE END: The Crusaders will look to once again be a strong defensive team in 2013-2014. Last year, Holy Cross gave up only 64.3 points per contest, while holding the opposition to 42.0 percent shooting from the field and 31.8 percent shooting from three-point range. The Crusaders also averaged 3.5 blocked shots per game, and outrebounded the opposition by 0.1 boards per contest. In addition, Holy Cross held 11 of its opponents to 60 points or less in regulation. In 2011-2012, the Crusaders ranked first in the Patriot League in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.5 percent) and blocked shots (4.4 blocks per game), while holding their opponents to 66.8 points per game and 42.1 percent field goal shooting overall. CRUSADERS AT THE HART CENTER: Holy Cross currently owns an all-time record of 338-137 at the Hart Center, including a 1-0 mark so far this year. The Crusaders posted their 300th win in the building against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14, 2008. Holy Cross had a 23-game winning streak at the Hart Center from Feb. 15, 2006-Jan. 2, 2008, which was the longest streak in the history of the building and the sixth-longest home court winning streak in the nation at the time. In 2006-2007 the Crusaders posted a perfect 14-0 mark at the Hart Center, setting a school record for the most home victories since they moved into the building. During the Hart Center’s history, Holy Cross has posted a winning record at home in 32 out of 38 seasons, while recording double-figure home victories 17 times. The Crusaders stand 125-45 at home since the beginning of the 2000-2001 season, including a 79-24 record against Patriot League foes. SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS: North Carolina enters the contest ranked 12th in the nation by the Associated Press and 11th by USA Today. The Tar Heels stand 1-0 on the season, after defeating Oakland 84-61 in their season opener last Friday. Junior forward James Michael McAdoo led North Carolina by recording 21 points and nine rebounds against the Grizzlies. Sophomore guard Marcus Paige added 14 points and five assists, while sophomore forward J.P. Tokoto chipped in with 13 points, five assists and four steals. The Tar Heels are led by Roy Williams, who stands 283-79 in 11 seasons at North Carolina. Williams’ career record stands at 701-180, including 15 years as the head coach at Kansas. HOLY CROSS JOINS COACH4ADAY PROGRAM: The Crusaders are partnering with the 3-Point Foundation and Coaching for Literacy to take part in the Coach4aDay Program during the 2013-2014 season. For selected games this year, opportunities will be auctioned off to serve as a guest “assistant coach,” with the proceeds going to charity. This will involve the chance to sit directly behind the team bench, meet the Holy Cross coaches and players, and get a glimpse inside the locker room on game day. Upcoming games which are included come against American (Jan. 5), Lehigh (Jan. 18) and Bucknell (Feb. 9). For more information, visit “www.coach4aday.com”. DRIBBLES: Sophomore guard Eric Green (Mountain House, Calif.) recorded career highs of 10 points, five rebounds and five assists in Wednesday’s victory over Sacred Heart ... In the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate Report, for the four-class aggregate of entering classes from 2003 through 2006, the Crusader men’s basketball team posted a perfect 100 percent graduation rate. Holy Cross’ overall Graduation Success Rate for all student-athletes was 98 percent, tied for the fourth-best mark among all Division I schools ... Holy Cross has received an NCAA Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition Award in each of the last eight seasons, for having a multi-year APR in the top 10 percent of all Division I men’s basketball teams in the nation. 2013-2014 Holy Cross Men's Basketball Holy Cross Season Box Score (as of Nov 14, 2013) All games RECORD: ALL GAMES CONFERENCE NON-CONFERENCE ## Player 50 05 21 02 03 13 24 43 12 22 15 42 Dave Dudzinski Cullen Hamilton Malachi Alexander Anthony Thompson Justin Burrell Malcolm Miller Eric Green Taylor Abt Christopher Morgan Robert Champion De'Vaughn Reid Matt Husek Team Total.......... After sharing the information with other parents, Sheila Miller would take her stat sheets home and file them away with all the newspaper articles about Malcolm that she carefully clipped and proudly preserved. “She was one of my biggest supporters,” Miller said. Sheila lost her battle with cancer and passed away two weeks before the start of HC’s 2012-13 season. Miller played with a heavy heart last year, and looking back, he thinks that probably affected his game a little bit. “But there’s no need to make excuses,” Miller said. “You still have to come and show up. It was a rough time, but everyone is moving forward. I’m doing fine. My family (dad, Robert, and three siblings) and my team were always there for me and that really helped out. It’s a different experience, but there are ways to grow stronger.” Big things are expected of Miller as the 6-foot-7, 210pound starting small forward gets ready to begin his junior season. “We need him to step up and have the season we think he can have,” Holy Cross coach Milan Brown said. “He’s just a gifted player. Just his body type and athletic ability off the top lends everybody to want a lot from him. He’s ready to take that jump. I’m saying that because we’ve seen it every day in practice. We don’t go two days in practice and rewind the tape on him and say, ‘Did you see that?’ “ The Crusaders, coming off a disappointing 12-18 (4-10 Patriot League) campaign, open the year at 5:30 p.m. today against Harvard at TD Garden. The game is part of the “Coaches vs. Cancer” tripleheader that also includes Boston University vs. Northeastern at 12:30 and UMass vs. Boston College at 3. Miller, who is from Laytonsville, Md., started 26 of the 27 games he played in last year — a shoulder injury sidelined him late in the season — and he averaged 5.7 points and 5.4 rebounds. He led the team in rebounding and steals eight times. He ranked 10th in the Patriot League in blocked shots. Miller posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in HC’s win at Navy and scored a seasonhigh 14 points to go along with eight rebounds in the Crusaders’ home victory against American. As Brown pointed out and as fans at the Hart Center saw, Miller showed flashes throughout last season. Now, he needs to be more consistent. “I’m definitely ready to take on the challenge,” Miller said. “I feel like I need to be a bigger role in the defense, the offense and the team in general. Whatever I can do to help the team win I feel like I have to shoulder the responsibility because I believe everyone else is giving the best they can to help the team win.” Since arriving at Holy Cross as a freshman, Miller has added 30 pounds to his frame, giving him more strength to go along with his speed and length. In addition to conditioning work during the offseason, Miller focused on his ball handling, post work and jump shot, as well as being a better defender. “He does so many things for us at both ends,” Brown said. “He’ll be able to manufacture some of his own points getting to the offensive glass, running in transition and being able to drive off someone else’s penetration. He’s improved his shot. I think he feels comfortable going on the blocks and making a few post moves. If he plays to the level of his capability he could be the reason that our season could change. I don’t put that pressure on him, but he understands the ramifications both ways.” Miller played in 21 games his freshman year when the Crusaders won 15 games. He worked his way into the starting lineup to begin last year. Holy Cross won three of its first four games in 2012-13, but lost 10 of its last 12. “This season we’re much better players,” Miller said. “We have to be more consistent — it’s all the little things. Losing games by three points (79-76 to Lafayette), losing at the buzzer (in overtime at American) — those things build up and build up. We don’t want to remember the past, but we want to learn our lessons from the past and we want to build on that.”
