As we begin a new
year, a look ahead
at the next few
weeks….
Catholic Schools
week begins on
Monday, February 1. The St. Francis
of Assisi Preschool and the Franciscan School are both treasures. We will
have an Open House for both schools
on Sunday, January 31, after the
11:30 Mass. Check the bulletin or
the website for more information.
Also on Sunday January 31, as part of
the Year of Mercy declared by Pope
Francis, we will have a guest speaker,
Fr. Greg Boyle, speaking on mercy
at 7:30pm in the church. You need a
ticket to get in. Tickets are free, and
tickets are going fast, so check the
website or the bulletin for more
information.
Next weekend we will have a guest
speaker at all masses. His name is
Chris Kuehn and he is a seminarian from the diocese of Raleigh. He
will be speaking about the Bishop’s
Annual Appeal which begins next
week. Once again, we ask your
generosity and support for this
important annual appeal.
Finally, an invitation I received last
week from the Institute of Islamic
and Turkish Studies in Cary for a
presentation to be given there on
Saturday afternoon, January 23:
“The rise of ISIS, violent attacks
by some Muslims in the U.S., and
backlash against Muslim Americans due to the attacks and vitriolic
campaign rhetoric have presented
challenges for Muslim Americans.
Duke Professor David Schanzer
will analyze these trends and
suggest a path forward for those
seeking a more peaceful and just
society.” I’m not sure if I’ll be able
to go, but the presentation feels
very Franciscan in its looking
forward to a way of peace.
Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day,
and on that morning a group from St.
Francis will be serving breakfast at the
Oak City Outreach Center in downtown Raleigh – another sign of how
our parish lives out the Year of Mercy.
Blessings on your week!
Thank you to all who are involved.

Second Collection
e have all seen the heartbreaking stories of those who have
died and who have been greatly impacted by the damage from
the severe weather in the midwestern and southern parts of our
country. Additional major flooding is expected over the next several weeks
as rivers and tributaries continue to rise and the weather is turning colder
with freezing temperatures and icing of the initial flood damage possible.
Often times, the poor are the most impacted by these conditions and the
unmet needs are and will be significant. This weekend’s second collection
is for relief efforts for these recent weather related disasters and also
in anticipation of other possible domestic disasters during 2016.

All Family Enrichment
ur Liturgy and Formation Team came together last weekend to bring a dynamic
and engaging learning experience centered on teaching about Mass. This “All
Family” enrichment opportunity gave our families, especially those preparing for
First Eucharist and Confirmation, the opportunity to gather, explore, and further reflect
on the Sacrament of Eucharist. Jim Wahl and Jennifer Fiduccia taught that Mass is:




a family meal
the place that we enter into God’s story
where heaven breaks through to earth
and where we celebrate Jesus’ presence
It was a wonderful way to come together to grow in our awareness of what God has
done and continues to do in the life of our families and Christian community.
Below and on bulletin cover: Families bless one another at the end of our time together.

W
e are pleased to
announce that Father
Greg Boyle will be
coming to St. Francis
of Assisi as part of our ongoing Adult
Faith Formation offerings during the
Year of Mercy. As Executive Director
of Homeboy Industries and an
acknowledged expert on gangs and
intervention approaches, Fr. Boyle is
an internationally renowned speaker.
He has given commencement
addresses at numerous universities,
as well as spoken at conferences for
teachers, social workers, criminal
justice workers, and others about
the importance of adult attention,
guidance, and unconditional love in
preventing youth from joining gangs.
4
Father Gregory Boyle was born in
Los Angeles and is one of eight
children. He entered the Society
of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1972 and was
ordained a priest in 1984. He was
appointed pastor of Dolores Mission
Church in the Boyle Heights
neighborhood of Los Angeles in
1986 where he served through
1992. Homeboy Industries was born
in 1988 and is now the largest gang
intervention, re-hab, and re-entry
program in the United States.
Father Greg is the author
of the New York Times
Bestselling book, Tattoos
on the Heart: The Power of
Boundless Compassion.
His debut book has been honored
by the Southern California Indie
Booksellers Association, Pen USA,
Publishers Weekly, and Goodreads
Choice Awards. Father Greg will be
available to sign copies of his book
following the presentation on
January 31.
“Compassion isn't just about
feeling the pain of others; it's about
bringing them in toward yourself.
If we love what God loves, then, in
compassion, margins get erased.
'Be compassionate as God is
compassionate,' means the
dismantling of barriers that
exclude.”
― Gregory J. Boyle
Help Us Open Wide
The Door of Mercy
Kathleen Owen, Coordinator of Care and Wellness
Y
ou may have noticed the beautiful banners
beside the doors to our sanctuary. They were
added to bring attention to the Holy Year of
Mercy which was proclaimed on December 8,
2015. Pope Francis’ prayer is that each of us would have
“a genuine experience of God’s mercy.” He calls each of
us to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door as a “sign of
the deep desire for true conversion.”
It sounds great, doesn’t it? But not everyone can get to
those doors. More and more members of our community
are surrendering the keys to their cars. After all the road
construction out front, I’ve been tempted to do the same!
But in this area of Raleigh, if you can’t drive, you can’t
arrive – at the doctor’s office, at the grocery store, or
at Mass!
One of our ministries has been helping people get to
Mass for years. Our Transportation Ministry drives people
to Mass who can’t drive themselves. Each team member
is scheduled to drive once or twice each month and only
to the Mass that they like to attend. The people we drive
are usually elderly, but are able to safely get in and out
of a car without assistance, and are able to walk to the
sanctuary. The time commitment is usually minimal as
our ministry leader, Stephanie Smith tries to match drivers
with riders who are close to their home or close to church.
Our riders are so rich in life experience. Many have
moved here to be close to children. We have one gentleman who is blind and who has a wonderful service dog
(Golden Retriever) named Killer! Ed and Killer come down
from New Hampshire each winter. Many other riders live
in assisted living communities that don’t provide transportation to church. And some of our riders are recovering
from surgery and are not permitted to drive just yet.
We are now at a point where the drivers we have recruited are not able to meet all the requests coming in.
If you are looking for a ministry that’s has a low impact
on your schedule but a high impact on the people served,
consider joining our Transportation Ministry. Each person
we serve is so grateful to be able to get to Mass, to enjoy
being “in community”, and to enjoy a bit of independence
in getting out of the house.
Help us open wide the doors for this Jubilee Year of
Mercy. Contact Stephanie Smith at 919-302-0080
and experience this Year of Mercy in a beautiful way!

the St. Francis of Assisi Preschool
Sunday, January 31, 12:45 pm until 2:00 pm
W
e invite all parishioners
to join us for our Open
House to see what
makes the Franciscan
School and the St. Francis of Assisi
Preschool so special. The Education
Ministry Open House will showcase
the many talents and accomplishments
of your parish schools. Please stop by
after the 11:30 mass on January 31
for some refreshments and a chance
to tour our parish schools. The Open
House for the Franciscan School
will begin in Jacoba Hall and the
Preschool Open House will begin
in Elizabeth Hall.
The Franciscan School, a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School of Academic
Excellence, offers a challenging, faithbased curriculum for children in grades
K-8. In addition to traditional subjects,
students have the opportunity to study
advanced math concepts, Spanish,
religion, music, art, and performance
art. The curriculum includes the integration of technology with SMART
Boards in every classroom, iPads in
grades K-2, mobile laptop carts in
6
grades 3-4 and Chromebooks
for every student in grades 5-8.
Facilities include two state-of-the-art
science labs, an award winning
LEED-certified middle school,
St. Mary of the Angels Chapel,
and Assisi Community Center that
houses a regulation-size gym.
The Franciscan School challenges
students to excel not only in the
classroom but in service alongside
the many ministries of the Catholic
Community of St. Francis of Assisi.
For more information about the
Franciscan School, contact Lura
Tysiac at 919-847-8205x469.
If you are interested in attending
Open House for the Franciscan
School, you may register on

Signing up is not mandatory, but
appreciated. All are welcome!
The St. Francis of Assisi Preschool
offers a variety of innovative programs for children ages 2-5 years,
including the Preparatory Kindergarten class. Children in the Preschool
participate in specials such as Music
& Movement and Spanish and engage in age-appropriate faith formation and monthly service opportunities. The Preschool continues to
emphasize improving developmental
skills in all five areas of a child’s social development: spiritual; social;
emotional; cognitive; and physical.
There also is a focus on increasing
the development of fine motor skills
needed for forming letters and numbers, skills needed for successful
reading, such as letter and phonic
awareness, and skills needed for
future success in mathematics.
Registration for the 2016-17 school
year began January 11 for current
students, siblings of current students
and students of employees. Registration for alumni begins January 25
and registration for parish families
begins February 1. Registration
forms and information regarding
the Preschool can be found at

From Water into Wine
J
anuary may actually be the month of love (not
February). Want to try to embrace it with me?
Recently, Pope Francis announced his
monthly intentions for prayer over the Vatican
Television Center. Check out this video when you
get a chance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=vI0tiN88ldE#action=share. Key points I heard were:
We are all children of God and no matter our
background or our religion, we all believe in love.
Pray about this with me.
In today’s Gospel with the wedding at Cana and
Jesus’ first public miracle of turning water into an
abundance of wine, we heard love. This setting of a
wedding is the ultimate public expression of love and
his first miracle is an expression of great abundance
not of wine but of love coming from our Father with
anticipation of what is to come in great abundance.
Even when I had the TV on in the background the
other night, I heard Ellen DeGeneres’ acceptance
speech for her People’s Choice Humanitarian award.
In her speech, she said: “We all really, really love
one another deep down. We need more of this in
the world. … Be kind to one another.”
In preparation for our upcoming event on January 31,
Celebrating God's Mercy: An Evening with Fr. Greg
Boyle, S.J., I am starting to read his book: Tattoos on
the Heart. Guess what I highlighted in the first few
pages? Excerpts from a poem by Hafez:
Admit something:
Everyone you see, you say to them,
”Love me.”….
Still though, think about this,
This great pull in us to connect.
Why not become the one…
That is always saying …
What every other eye in this world
Is dying to
Hear
Looking ahead in these weeks of Ordinary Time, it’s
all about love. Love yourself. Love one another. Love
God. God loves you. Think about it and we’ll continue
these thoughts over the next few weeks.

RCIA Sponsors Needed
Several people have expressed an
interest in becoming Catholic and are
in need of a member of our parish to
be their sponsor. Sponsors must be
practicing Catholics who have received
the Sacrament of Confirmation. They
make a commitment to participate in
RCIA catechetical sessions with the
candidate or catechumen. The entire
community is responsible for assisting
on this journey of faith and the sponsor
represents the community. By your
support, you help the candidate or
catechumen feel welcome and at
home, a companion on their faith journey. We are particularly in need of
men to be sponsors! If you are interested in helping someone join the
Catholic Church, contact Jason Lillis
at jason.lillis@stfrancisraleigh.org for
an initial conversation about RCIA.
