SCOPE OF WORKS A fully installed Bedhead Services Trunking System approved as a Class I Medical Device and complying with the requirements of the IEE 17th Edition Wiring Regulations and meeting specifically with HTM 08-03, HTM 02-01, BS EN 11197, BS EN 60601, CIBSE LG2 and all other relevant standards shall be provided for the purpose of bringing electrical services, medical gases and communications equipment in one composite enclosure to the patient’s bedside. It shall be the responsibility of the project team to ensure that the system provided fully satisfies the performance requirements of the project. Accordingly, the project team shall ultimately be responsible for all works associated with the project design, development, supply, delivery to site, off-loading, storage, erection, installation, testing and commissioning of the Bedhead Services System. The sub-contractor shall allow within their costs for attending meetings with the main contractor and other trade contractors to ensure that all components are fully integrated within the Bedhead Services System. The general appearance of the trunking and the quality of workmanship shall be of primary importance. The design concept of the trunking shall lend itself to the accommodation of services to meet the individual needs of the ward / area it is to serve. It shall not be acceptable to have bedhead services trunking installed that is supplied by more than one manufacturer. The project team shall allow for inspection and testing at the factory of any electrical systems within the trunking using a sign-off system to be submitted to, and approved by the main contractor (off-site construction projects only). The trunking manufacturer shall cost for attending site to off-load the trunking. The project team shall cost to distribute and fix the trunking including the installation and connection of all cables where appropriate. Finally, the services shall be commissioned by the necessary system specialists. Measuring The project team shall be responsible for determining the exact length of the Bedhead Services System and the layout of the components within the trunking. In consultation with the hospital’s Infection Control Nurse or equivalent, the project team shall include within their calculations for an appropriate length to allow for cleaning the side of the trunking end caps. Drawings At no cost, all relevant drawings and documentation shall be provided to the trunking manufacturer in an appropriate form to allow the manufacturer to design and plan the trunking. Where appropriate, fully dimensioned working drawings for each area shall be provided. Relevant drawings shall be approved and signed off by the main contractor and the project team before commencement of manufacture. Product Samples Upon request, the trunking manufacturer shall provide samples of the trunking to be supplied and; if necessary, shall provide a means of displaying the product in a true to life environment. Examples of typical elevations for each proposed system shall also be provided in drawing format. Protection of the Bedhead Services Trunking The trunking manufacturer shall ensure that all component parts of the trunking are adequately protected to prevent damage during transit. To achieve this the trunking top and bottom covers and back spine shall be contained within purpose designed packaging. Front plates and end caps shall be provided within protective plastic bags contained within cardboard boxes. For the purpose of protecting the trunking between initial installation and final handover, the top and bottom covers of the trunking shall be covered with low tack adhesive tape. Packaging used shall be environmentally friendly and re-usable wherever possible. Health & Safety Under the requirements of CDM, the project team shall provide: Method Statements for on-site installation – including Risk Assessments Sign Off procedure for factory assembly of the Bedhead Services Trunking System (off-site construction projects). Site hand-over procedure for installed Bedhead Services Trunking modules. Details of the certification / documentation verification procedure to demonstrate that the Bedhead Services Trunking System is compliant with all essential requirements of the relevant standards. EMC Requirements The installed Bedhead Services Trunking System shall comply with the essential requirements for emissions and immunity as given within the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC, including the potential problems of electrostatic discharge (ESD) derived from the high static voltages that can be generated at the patient bedside. Modification, System Upgrades and Maintenance The trunking system shall be designed for easy access to allow for modification, system upgrades and routine maintenance. To this end, equipment plates, top and bottom covers shall be removable from the front in order to make all components, wiring and piping accessible. Gas valves shall be accessible without the need to remove the equipment front plate. Life Expectancy The Bedhead Services Trunking shall have a life expectancy of not less than 35 years and shall be supported by the manufacturer for this period. Powder Coated Finish All front plates, top and bottom covers shall be finished in a durable syntha pulyin polyester powder coated finish incorporating a silver-based anti-microbial agent for improved infection control. The powder coated finish shall be in accordance with the requirements of BS 3900:1974 and BS 6496:1984 – to an average thickness of between 60 – 80 microns. Unless otherwise specified by the architect, the finish shall be ‘white’ (RAL 9010, 25% (gloss)). Earthing Where two lengths of trunking are installed alongside each other to provide a continual run, the trunking shall be earthed by means of an earth cable connected to adjacent back boxes by means of tapped screws. Infection Control The Bedhead services trunking shall have been designed so as to minimise the entrapment of dust and the build-up of bacteria. To this end, the gap between the top of the trunking and the wall shall be filled with silicon sealant and the trunking shall be designed, manufactured and assembled in such a manner so as to provide Ingress Protection of IP54. The powder coating shall have a non-leaching, anti-microbial agent incorporated into the paint during manufacture. The anti-microbial agent shall inhibit the growth of micro organisms and shall be silver based so as to be safe in use. The inclusion of an anti-microbial agent shall not however be a substitute for normal cleaning practices. The trunking manufacturer shall be supported by a specialist infection control team able to discuss issues with the hospital infection control officer. TRUNKING CONSTRUCTION The Bedhead Services Trunking System shall be manufactured from extruded aluminium sections (ENAW-6060T66, EN755/2 – TOL.EN12020) of not less than 2mm thick. Plastic, steel or laminate trunking shall not be permitted. The trunking shall have been designed so as to minimise the use of fixing screws and from the external view of the trunking there shall be no evidence of assembly components. Pre-fabricated, equipment back boxes manufactured from 18 swg galvanised mild steel and installed along the length of the trunking back spine shall provide for fixing of top and bottom covers, electrical segregation of equipment, two compartments for segregation of cabled services and one compartment for piped services. Each section shall be accessible for on-going maintenance. The Bedhead Services Trunking shall comprise: Mounting Rail A ridged first fix mounting rail manufactured from flash anodised aluminium extrusion shall be provided in 3 metre lengths. It shall be possible to cut and drill the Mounting Rail on site as required. For wall tolerances greater than 5mm, plastic packers shall be provided by the project team. Tolerances less than 5mm shall be accommodated within the trunking design. Back Spine Manufactured from flash anodised aluminium extrusion, the Back Spine shall include score lines on the reverse to indicate the position of the cable channels. The Back Spine shall hook onto the Mounting Rail and shall be secured using self-tapping screws to prevent accidental raising of the trunking during operation of hydraulic beds, etc. Trunking that is not securely fastened to the wall shall be unacceptable. The Back Spine shall be designed to allow use of a first fix, flush mounted cable termination box allowing for discrete back entry of services where required. Back Boxes A single universal Back Box shall be provided for the mounting of all electrical, gas and communications equipment. The Back Box shall be 150mm wide with the facility to expand the size of the box by removing the side wings and linking a number of units together. A box shall be provided for every front plate containing equipment and the sides of the Back Box shall create electrical segregation as required to comply with LVD requirements. Back Boxes shall be fixed to the Back Spine using snap-in plastic rivets. The top of the Back Box shall provide a fixing mechanism for the top trunking extrusion and shall include provision for two electrical cabling channels with a total cable capacity of approximately 25cm2. Pre-grommeted holes through which electrical cables can be installed shall also be incorporated for ease of installation – the use of rubber grommets shall not be acceptable. Cables shall be retained by cable grommet entry plates, integral to the back box design. The bottom of the Back Box shall provide a means of segregating the gas pipes from the electrical services as required to comply with low voltage directives and shall be pre-tapped to take pipe clips fixed using M3 screws. The bottom of the back box shall also provide a snap-in fixing mechanism for the bottom trunking extrusion. The main section of the Back Box shall be designed to accept fixing of printed circuit boards and components associated with electrical, gas and data services – such components shall be fixed to the back box using snap-in plastic feet/rivets. Top and Bottom Extrusions Top and Bottom Extrusions shall be manufactured from aluminium sections and shall be powder coated. To prevent items being placed on the trunking, the top section shall be of a curved and sloping profile. To assist with installation the profile of the bottom section shall be identical to that of the top section. Both the Top and Bottom Extrusions shall fix to the Trunking Back Boxes using ‘snap-in’ clips. For added security the extrusions shall also be held in position using M3 tapped screws. Top and Bottom Extrusions shall be supplied in up to 3 metre lengths. Where extrusions are butted up together to give a longer run of trunking, an ABS cover strip shall be provided to hide the join. Front Plates Powder coated Front Plates formed from 1.5mm, 16 swg aluminium shall be provided with a slide and hook mechanism incorporated for ease of installation. For added rigidity in use each plate shall be secured with two screw fixings and shall have foam blocks on the reverse of the plate. Pre-cut, rigid PVC strips shall be provided between equipment plates to cover the slide and hook mechanism. Gas front plates shall incorporate an escutcheon designed to be removed to allow access to the gas outlet - thereby eliminating the need to remove the front plate for routine servicing. End Caps Moulded plastic end caps - symmetrical in design, shall be fitted at each end of the trunking. Mounted onto a bracket that has in turn been secured to the back spine using adjustable screws, the end caps shall be fitted in such a manner so as not to show any fixings. In designing the layout of the trunking, the project team shall ensure sufficient room is left at the end of the trunking to allow for cleaning of the end caps. A transition version of the end cap shall be available for use where the high profile trunking changes to low profile. Trunking Risers Where services are to be surface run, a low profile version of the Bedhead Services Trunking (a Riser) shall be provided to bring the services from the ceiling void into the trunking. The Riser shall include for segregation of electrical services and gases and shall be available in 2 metre lengths. It shall be possible to cut the riser on site using a suitable mitre saw. The Trunking Riser shall enter the horizontal trunking through a profiled section of extrusion designed specifically for this purpose. The Trunking Riser shall be positioned not less than 50mm from the end of the trunking run to allow for the fitting of an end cap. Silicon sealant shall be applied where the Riser enters into the top trunking extrusion. Where services are not to be surface mounted a flush Termination Box shall be provided for installation within the wall cavity. To assist with maintenance, the Trunking Riser shall snap-fix onto the back spine with no additional fixings required. For the purpose of accommodating up to 6 gases, it shall be possible to bring two risers – one at each end of the trunking – into the horizontal run. Corners Vacuum-formed Internal, External and 90o corner pieces matching the profile of and with cable segregation reflecting that of the horizontal trunking shall be provided as required. Lighting It shall be possible to fully integrate a combined up and down lighting unit into the Bedhead Services Trunking System. To this end, the lighting unit shall be secured to the top of the trunking section and shall include end caps profiling the top section of the trunking. The luminaries shall utilise T5 tubes and a high frequency electronic ballast to provide a constant light output. The down-light shall provide a light output of 28 watts. The up-light shall provide a light output of either 54 watts or 80 watts. The down-light shall be capable of electronically dimming the light output from 1% to100% by use of control buttons incorporated into the nurse call patient hand unit and/or a switch mounted on the bedhead services trunking system. Likewise, on/off control of the luminaries shall be by the use of either buttons on the nurse call patient hand unit or trunking mounted switches. The length of the lighting unit shall be either 1.2 metres (54 watt up-lighter) or 1.5 metres (80 watt up-lighter). The units shall have a powder coat finish, colour matched to the trunking. Lighting units meeting the above specification shall also be available for wall mounting above the bedhead services trunking system. The wall mounted options shall have a purpose designed end cap and shall be supplied complete with a mounting hook to secure the unit to the wall. The provider of the lighting units shall be capable of providing full photometric data, calculated for individual applications. Services The Bedhead Services Trunking System shall be designed to accommodate the following services: Mains, ELV and SELV electrical services. A digital nurse call system. Integrated up and down lighting units in general accordance with the CIBSE Lighting Guide LG2. Surface mounted angle-poise reading and examination lamps in general accordance with the CIBSE Lighting Guide LG2. Patient Sound Entertainment. TV aerial systems and outlets. Voice / Data and IM&T outlets. Medical Gas Terminals: (Single Entry) OR 2 x 15mm, 1 x 22mm or 28mm 3 x 15mm (Double Entry) OR 4 x 15mm, 2 x 22mm or 28mm 6 x 15mm For typical requirements at the bedhead refer to HTM 08-03, Appendix A – Matrix of bedhead services by location/care group. INSTALLATION Off-site construction The Bedhead Services Trunking System shall be supplied to site pre-assembled as one composite unit with purpose designed connectors in place to assist with installation. On-site assembly will not be acceptable other than for the connection of angle-poise lights, T.V. arms and other similar items of equipment that protrude from the trunking system. To fix the trunking to the wall it shall be necessary to first fix a mounting rail. The next stage shall involve mounting the trunking run onto the mounting rail and securing with fixing screws through the trunking backspine. The fixing points shall be accessed by removing the front plates and shall be spaced at approximately 600mm intervals – although the actual distance shall be dictated by the layout of the front plates. Clearly presented installation documentation shall be supplied with the trunking. On-site construction The Bedhead Services Trunking System shall be supplied to site in modular form for on-site assembly and accordingly special attention shall be paid to the ease with which the trunking has been designed to be assembled on site.
