The airline says the newly fitted seats give
passengers additional space and comfort
with more leg room. As the widest economy

The seats are upholstered in Southwest’s bold
blue eLeather, a composition leather made of
natural leather fibres. eLeather, which made
its debut on Southwest aircraft in 2012, is
manufactured using eco-friendly technology
including state-of-the-art techniques which
recycles 95% of the processed water and converts its own waste streams into energy, feeding back into the process.

A group of frontline Southwest employees
worked together to create a cutting-edge galley design, which will allow flight attendants to
serve passengers more efficiently than before
according to the airline. Unique in the airline
industry, the transverse (aft) galley on the new
737-800 aircraft does not have carts resulting
in lighter weight.
With the addition of the new G7 galley (located just past the forward-entry door), flight
attendants will be able to more quickly accommodate passengers in the forward part
of the airline’s new 737-800 aircraft. Additionally, new space in the forward galley area for
required emergency equipment means more
overhead bin space.

BOC Aviation sells its final pre-2007
aircraft
BOC Aviation has sold its final four owned aircraft acquired prior to 2007, with no aircraft in
the owned fleet now older than 10 years. The
four aircraft sold include three Airbus A320 family aircraft and one Boeing 747 freighter. Commenting on the sale, Robert Martin, Managing
Director and Chief Executive Officer of BOC Aviation, said, “We set ourselves an internal goal of
selling all aircraft in our owned fleet that predated our December 2006 acquisition by Bank of
China by the end of 2016, and we have achieved

The A350 XWB embarks on its first demonstration tour of China
The world’s newest airliner, the Airbus A350XWB,
will make its first demo tour of China between
June 25and July 2 this year. During the eight-day
trip, A350 XWB test aircraft MSN2 will fly to Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (SHA), Guangzhou (CAN), Haikou (HAK) and Chengdu (CTU). The tour follows
the A350’s endorsement by China Eastern Airlines
who ordered 20 A350-900 aircraft in April 2016.
Air China also ordered 10 A350-900s. China is one
of the fastest growing markets for air transport
and Airbus has supplied 50% of the in-service
commercial aircraft fleet in China. The Chinese
aviation industry has made important contributions to the development and making of the A350
XWB. Airbus (Beijing) Engineering Centre, together and its partner Aviation Industry Corporation
of China, participated in the program’s development, involving specific design work for the airframe. Some five percent of the airframe is manufactured in China. The A350 XWB is a symbol of
strategic industrial cooperation between Airbus
and China’s aviation industry.

Singapore Technologies Aerospace (ST Aerospace) today reported that its subsidiary, Elbe
Flugzeugwerke GmbH (EFW), will be setting
up a new subsidiary in Kodersdorf, Germany,
with a planned equity of €5.5m (approximately
USS$8.5m). The new company will be responsible for the production of lightweight components, mainly comprising floor panels and cargo
linings, for single-aisle Airbus aircraft. The facility
will supplement EFW’s existing production line
in Dresden, Germany, as EFW expands its component production business. Occupying a land
area of 30,000 m², with planned investment of
about €40m (approximately USS$61.5m), the
new facility will house a component manufacturing factory, furnished with new equipment and
tooling. Component production at the new facility is planned to commence by the first half of
2018. The new subsidiary is expected to create
about 100 new jobs by the end of 2018. Based in
Dresden, Germany, EFW is a 55:45 joint venture
between ST Aerospace and Airbus Group. EFW
combines various aviation and technology activities under one roof, including passenger-tofreighter aircraft conversions, maintenance and

Vector Aerospace completes first successful PT6A-140 engine test at South African
facility
Vector Aerospace, a global independent provider of aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, has successfully completed
its first full engine test on the Pratt & Whitney
Canada (P&WC) PT6A-140 turboprop at its facility in South Africa. The PT6A-140 powers the
Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX, and is also offered as an upgrade for earlier models of the 208
Caravan family. Vector’s South African facility, located at the Lanseria International Airport, was
appointed a Designated Overhaul Facility (DOF)
for the PT6A-140 in July 2014. The location is
also a P&WC Distributor and Designated Overhaul Facility (DDOF) for other models in the PT6A
engine family, including the PT6A-114/114A variants used on previous versions of the Caravan.
ATLAS Active Winglets certification for Citation M2
Tamarack Aerospace has received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval from the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) for its
ATLAS Active Winglets on the Cessna Citation
M2 light jet. With the CJ, CJ1 and CJ1+ certified
in December 2015, this brings the total number of Cessna models approved for Tamarack’s
ultra-efficient winglets up to four. Using ATLAS,
the wing span of the M2 has been increased by
5.3 feet and, when combined with Tamarack’s
highly tuned winglets, the effective aspect ratio
is increased from 9.3 to over 12. The result is a
dramatic improvement in performance, two to
three times that of a traditional winglet installation. The ATLAS Active Winglets on the M2 reduces block fuel burn by an estimated 10-12%.
Range has been estimated to have increased
by more than 100nm. The added stability of
the winglets is exceptional; the plane dampens
in 7 cycles at FL410 eliminating a yaw damper
inoperative limitation that currently exists on
the M2. Additionally, the ATLAS Active Winglets
modification increases the MZFW by 400 lbs.
and the WAT table (high/hot performance) by
almost 1000 lbs.

industry,” explained Frank Rott, CEO of HAITEC.
HAITEC received the Part-147 approval just a
few months ahead of the completion of its new
hangar at Hahn Airport, which is expected to go
into operation in autumn 2016. The new hangar
will more than double HAITEC’s maintenance
capacity. “These development projects demonstrate our commitment to continued growth as
we strengthen our presence at Hahn airport and

TransDigm Group Incorporated (TDG) has completed the acquisition of ILC Holdings, the parent company of Data Device Corporation, from
Behrman Capital for a total purchase price of
US$1.0bn in cash. TransDigm financed the acquisition with cash proceeds from the recently completed term loan and notes offerings. The acquisition of DDC was previously announced on May
24, 2016. DDC is a leading supplier of databus
and power controls and related products that
are used primarily in military avionics, commercial aerospace and space applications. The company’s core MIL-STD-1553 databus product line
has a large installed base of systems worldwide

Quebec government concludes deal on
Bombardier CSeries US$1bn investment
It has been confirmed that the deal first disclosed on October 25, 2015 whereby the
Quebec government was to invest US$1bn in
cash-strapped Bombardier, has been concluded. The payment will come in two tranches,
with US$500m due on June 30, and a further
US$500m on September 1.
According to Bombardier, “The investment has
been approved by Bombardier’s board of directors and the cabinet of the government of
Québec, and remains conditional upon the satisfaction of other customary conditions. The $1bn
US investment will be used entirely for cash flow
purposes of the CSALP.” The construction of the
investment has involved the creation of a new
company CSeries Aircraft Limited Partnership
(CSALP). In essence, the Quebecois government
will take a 49.5% stake in the CSeries as opposed
to the company as a whole. The board of the
new company will comprise three Bombardier
representatives and two from the Quebecois
government.
Bombardier added, “Bombardier will maintain
operational control of the CSeries program and
consolidate its financial results. Fred Cromer will
serve as president of the CSALP, and continue in
his current role.” It was also announced back on
April 25 that both the Quebecois government
and Bombardier have approached the Ottawa
government to pitch in with a further US$1 billion to increase the likelihood of overall success
for the project. However, the order books for the
CSeries are looking healthier since the signing
of a deal to supply 75 CS100s to US-based Delta
Airlines and the signing of a letter of intent to
supply 45 CS300 jets to Air Canada.

at least 150 start-ups in Europe, as well as 100
start-ups in the US, Starburst covers a wide range
of potential future collaborations with start-ups.
In addition to its established partnerships with
universities, research institutes, SMEs, OEMs
and aircraft manufacturers, Lufthansa Technik is
working toward a strong presence in the startup arena in several predefined technical search
fields as part of its Open Innovation Network.
Those collaborations can take all forms imaginable: from a simple inspiration by new technologies (market watch) to a complete buy-in,
everything is possible. Dr. Helge Sachs, Head of
Corporate Innovation Management and Product
Development of Lufthansa Technik is quoted as
saying: “Starburst helps Lufthansa Technik as
well as Lufthansa Group to cooperate with startups in the aviation industry in the local, European and global innovation ecosystems.”
Boeing has signed a new Technical Assistance
Agreement with iGA Havalimani Isletmesi A.S.
(IGA), the developer and operator of Istanbul
New Airport. Through the agreement, Boeing
subsidiary Jeppesen will provide its Total Airport
and Airspace Modeler (TAAM) solution to assist
IGA and DHMI, Turkey’s General Directorate of
State Airports Authority. This group will support
the development of Istanbul New Airport airspace design, the airport operation optimization
program and an operational readiness plan. The
state of the art Jeppesen TAAM analysis tool will
