THE ANNE MCLAREN PAPERS ADDITIONAL MANUSCRIPTS 83830-83981 THE BRITISH LIBRARY 2008 ANNE MCLAREN PAPERS FOREWORD This catalogue relates to the papers of Dame Anne McLaren, a twentieth century biologist. The papers consist of lecture notes, research notebooks, programmes and publications from conferences attended and lectured at, reports for the Council of Europe, material relating to the World Health Organisation and its programme in Human Reproduction, proposed space experiments on mice embryos, material collected by McLaren on population studies, genetics and social issues, her doctoral thesis, Royal Society material, correspondence, books and articles written by both her and Donald Michie. Further material is to be transferred to the British Library. The papers of Michie have also been deposited but are not yet fully catalogued. Please contact the Curator of the History of Science (hos@bl.uk) for further information. Graham Tratt Entries in this catalogue are searchable online via the British Library Manuscripts Catalogue. INTRODUCTION This catalogue relates to the papers of Anne McLaren, a leading twentieth century scientist in the field of mammalian reproductive and developmental biology and genetics. The papers were donated to the library by McLaren in 2004. Dame Anne Laura Dorinthea McLaren was born on 26 April 1927, the daughter of Henry McLaren, 2nd Baron Aberconway and Christabel McNaughten. McLaren gained a degree in Zoology from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, before working under JBS Haldane, Peter Medawar and Kingsley Sanders, obtaining her doctorate with a thesis entitled ‘Factors affecting susceptibility to neurotropic viruses in rodents’ in 1952, the same year in which she married fellow student Donald Michie. McLaren and Michie worked together at University College London (1952-1955), and then at the Royal Veterinary College (1955-1959). During this period they worked on the nature versus nurture problem, effects of the maternal environment in mice, and techniques of embryo transfer and implantation, which laid the foundations for in vitro fertilisation. They divorced in 1959 but remained on good terms, with both of them moving to the University of Edinburgh. Michie went on to become director of the Machine Intelligence Research Unit whilst McLaren moved to the Institute of Animal Genetics (1959-1974) continuing her work on mammalian fertility, embryo transfers, immunocontraception and chimaeras. In 1974 she became director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Mammalian Development Unit in London, developing an interest in the differentiation of mammalian primordial germ cells. McLaren retired from the MRC in 1992 and became principal research associate at the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute in Cambridge, a position which she held until her death. During her research career, she published more than 300 scientific papers. In 1975 McLaren was made a fellow of the Royal Society, and was awarded one of the Society’s Royal Medals in 1990. The following year McLaren became the first female officer of the Royal Society, holding the posts of Foreign Secretary and Vice-President from 1991-1996. In 1986 she was made a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for her pioneering work on fertility, was President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (The BA) 1993-1994, president of the Society of Developmental Biology, as well as a founder and President of AWISE (The Association for Women in Science and Engineering). She was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in 1993, though preferred to be known as Doctor rather than Dame or Professor. McLaren was awarded the Scientific Medal of the Zoological Society of London in 1967, the Society for the Study of Fertility Marshall Medal in 1985, the Pioneer award of the International Fertility Society in 1988 with Michie, the Society for Developmental Biology Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001, the UNESCO Helena Rubinstein Award for Women in Science in 2001, and the Japan Prize in 2002 with Andrzej Tarkowski. Most recently she was also awarded the March of Dimes prize in Developmental Biology in 2007. McLaren also helped to craft the UK’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 as a member of the Warnock Committee, and served as a member on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority for ten years. McLaren died in a car accident travelling from Cambridge to London with her former husband Donald Michie on 7 July 2007, aged 80. The papers are arranged as follows: A. Lecture Notes: 83830-83842 B.
