Mission
The hospital is named after Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950), an Indian patriot, poet,
philosopher and mystic who lived in service to God and man. The hospital is founded on
this principle – service to God and man – and continues to be guided by it. As an eye
hospital, we constantly challenge ourselves to go beyond the realm of moral or ethical
practice of medicine and bring in values of holistic and humanistic approaches in
providing eye health as a means of reducing human suffering.
Aravind’s mission is to “reduce needless blindness” within the above spiritual and ethical
framework.
History
Padmashree Dr.G.Venkataswamy, spent his entire career contributing to the
Government of India’s National Programme for Control of Blindness. When he retired
from Government service in 1976, he envisioned the Government’s efforts towards the
reduction of needless blindness. Putting his ideas into action, he started Aravind Eye
Hospital, which has grown from a humble beginning with 11 beds, into a network of ten
hospitals with a bed strength in excess of 4000 beds.
In 1985, the first satellite hospital of Aravind was started in Theni 50 miles West of
Madurai, and 1988 the second satellite hospital was started in Tirunelveli 120 miles to
the South of Madurai. In January,1997 third satellite hospital was started in Coimbatore
160 miles to the West of Madurai and February 2003 the fourth satellite hospital was
inaugurated at Pondicherry 250 miles to the North of Madurai. Subsequently in the
following years further satellite hospitals with excellence in cataract and glaucoma
services were opened in Salem, Dindigul, Tirupur, Tuticorin & Udumalpet.
Aravind Eye Hospital, in its 37 years of operation has performed more than 50 lakhs
surgical procedures and more than 40 million patients have benefited from outpatient
services.
Introduction
Aravind Eye Hospital is the largest eye care service provider in the world. Apart from the
volume of eye care service delivery, it has a strong commitment towards ophthalmic
teaching and clinical research. Experienced faculty members trained abroad in their
own subspecialities in Retina and Vitreous, Cornea, Glaucoma, Uvea, Orbit and
Oculoplastics, Squint and Paediatric Ophthalmology head the respective clinics and
teach and train the residents on the clinical aspects and applied research methodology
with the help of modern information technology systems. The residents are strongly
encouraged to participate in various symposium and class discussions and to present
papers at State and National level conferences. They are also trained and encouraged
to publish relevant clinical material in the national and international journals. Apart from
the regular training programme, the residents benefit from constant interaction with a
host of international faculty who come to share their experiences at regular intervals.
This institute offers opportunities to the residents on par with the leading world institutes
in Ophthalmology.

Facilities
Aravind Eye Hospital – Madurai
Main Hospital
The main hospital (paying section) has 9 speciality clinics, 9
operating theatres and 385 patient beds. Every day, an average of
150 surgeries is performed and 1500 outpatients are treated by
skilled ophthalmologists, nurses and other specialists using
sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic instruments. Aravind Eye
Hospital, Madurai, is the headquarters for the Madurai Eye Bank
Association, which receives eyeball donations from various
institutions in India and from the USA.
Free Hospital
The free hospital, situated adjacent to the main hospital, has 4
operating theatres with a capacity for 320 inpatients. Every day, on
an average, it handles about 800 outpatients and 200 surgeries are
performed. The doctors and paramedical staff are posted on rotation
between the free and paying hospitals to ensure a high quality of
care.
Camp Hospital
The camp hospital, situated close to the main hospital, has 2
operating theatres with a capacity for 600 inpatients. Every day, on
an average, it handles about 100 camp surgeries. Various doctors
and paramedical staff are present in the camp hospital on a monthly
basis from the Main hospital to ensure quality services at the camp
hospital.
Speciality Clinics Aravind Eye Hospital has full-fledged super specialty clinics like
Retina and Vitreous, Cornea, Glaucoma, IOL, Paediatric
Ophthalmology, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Uvea, Orbit & Oculoplasty
and Low Vision, manned by competent specialists.
Special therapeutic procedures like LASIK laser, YAG laser, Argon laser
photocoagulation and phacoemulsification, Transpupillary Thermo Therapy and special
diagnostic procedures like fluorescein angiography, ultrasonography, humphery field
analysis, corneal topography, specular microscopy, confocal microscopy, latest of
glaucoma diagnostics including GDX and HRT III, Visual Evoked Potential (VEP),
Electroretinogram(ERG) are available. Emergency services are available round the
clock. The hospital is well equipped with support facilities for ocular microbiology,
pathology, radiology, photography, biochemistry, ocular immunology, ophthalmic
genetics and an international eye bank.
The main hospital has a paramedical training centre and hostel facility for the staff.
Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, is the head quarter for Madurai Eye Bank Association,
which receives eyeballs from various institutions in India. The Rotary Aravind
International Eye Bank, receives processes and distributes corneal tissues in
accordance with international specifications.

Library and Resource Centre
Aravind library provides information through a wide range of literature on ophthalmology
and hospital management. The resource centre houses indexed international and
national journals, comprehensive list of books covering the entire gambit of
ophthalmology, pamphlets and health education materials related to eye care. In the
library, apart from national and international journals, a variety of videocassettes and
audiovisual aids are available along with separate rooms with provision to view them. In
addition, Aravind library has Medline and Medlar search facilities.
Medical Records Department
The Medical Records Department is completely computerised and maintains health
information system to provide updated statistics. Diagnosis and treatment are
computerised using the coding system based on International Classification of Diseases
(ICD – 9M). The medical records are used by the postgraduate students and other
doctors for learning and for other research purposes.
Computer Section
The entire patient information system and various administrative functions are
computerised through network. This provides necessary data (information) for statistical
analysis of the hospital’s performance, and for various research projects. It is also
equipped with desktop publishing facilities, laser printers, a colour scanner, and a slide
maker.
Community Outreach Activities
Aravind’s community outreach programme forms a vital link between the hospital and
the rural masses. Aravind organises an average of 30 screening camps per week, in
partnership with voluntary organisations. Patients are diagnosed, treated, and when
necessary, brought to the free hospital for surgery. The voluntary organisations bear the
cost of food and transportation for the patients, and the hospital covers other clinical and
administrative costs. All ophthalmologists and paramedics participate regularly in these
outreach activities. In the year ending March 2013, over 2,841 camps were conducted through
which 5, 54,413 patients were screened and 90547 patients underwent surgery and 89547 glasses
were dispensed.
Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology
(LAICO)
The main objective of LAICO is to contribute to the prevention and control of global
blindness through training health related and managerial personnel to develop and
implement community eye care programmes. The institute is funded by the SightFirst
Programme of Lions Club International, along with SEVA Foundation, USA, and SEVA
Service Society, Canada.

The energy for Aravind’s activities emerges from a strong value system based on
compassion, integrity, perseverance and altruism. The training at the institute will
encourage the students to explore the potential of such values, and will help them to
develop a value based work culture in their eye care programmes.
Satellite Hospitals
Aravind – Theni
Aravind Eye Hospital, Theni, was inaugurated in August 1985, with 150 free and 40
paying inpatient beds. The hospital is well equipped for cataract and minor eye
surgeries. The doctors and paramedics working in this hospital are supplemented by
staff posted on a rotation basis from the main hospital in Madurai. It is recognised for
Dip.N.B by National Board of Examinations.
Aravind – Tirunelveli
Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli, started in February 1988, is a near replica of the base
hospital in Madurai. It has facilities for 150 paying and 481 free inpatient beds. It also
has several of the speciality clinics and extensive outreach activities covering the
southern districts of Tamilnadu and Kerala. It is recognised for Dip. N.B. by National
Board of Examinations.
Aravind – Coimbatore
Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, inaugurated on January 1997 has facilities for 174
paying and 700 free inpatients beds. Like the Madurai hospital, it is well equipped with
all sub-speciality clinics and caters to the needs of various districts from Tamil Nadu,
Kerela & Karnataka. It is recognized for Dip.N.B. by National Board of Examinations.
Aravind - Pondichery
Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondichery, inaugurated on February 2003, has facilities for 150
paying and 600 free inpatients beds. The hospital houses trained doctors from various
sub specialities of ophthalmology who provide quality tertiary eye care. It is recognized
for Dip.N.B. by National Board of Examinations.
Aravind – Salem
As part of expanding eye care services to the needy, Aravind opened a new hospital in
Salem on November 27, 2011. Over 10,000 cataract patients from Salem are being
benefited every year through the outreach activities performed in this area by Aravind Madurai. In order to provide easily accessible eye care for the patients of Salem district, a 50
- bedded hospital sprawling over an area of 42,000 sq.ft that provides all the speciality
services in eye care was started
Aravind – Dindigul
A new facility in Dindigul was opened in September 2010. The hospital complex including the
residential facility sprawls an area of about 9500 sq.ft and has a bed capacity of 10. It caters
to the eyecare needs of a population of 2 million. The hospital has state – of – the - art
operation theatre which can handle about 15 surgeries a day. Services available include
refractive error, cataract and PCO (YAG Laser procedures) and glaucoma

Aravind – Tirupur
To cater to the needs of the growing city of Tirupur, a new hospital was started in 2010.The
hospital complex extends over an area of about 22000 sq.ft and has a bed capacity of 23.
The centre is targeted to serve 55,000 outpatients and almost 5000 surgeries a year.
Services available include management of refractive errors and cataract, Yag Capsulotomy,
Medical Retina and glaucoma. In addition to this, a well equipped optical processing
laboratory to deliver world class spectacles and contact lens is available
Aravind – Udumalpet
The sprawling campus including the residential facility has a built in area of about 22,000sq.ft
and a bed capacity of 20. The hospital has state-of-the-art operation theatres which can
effectively handle about 30 surgeries a day. Services available include management of
refractive errors, cataract surgery, Medical Retina and Glaucoma
Aravind – Tuticorin
A long – felt need of an eye care centre in Tuticorin came to reality with the opening of
Aravind’s secondary eye care centre. Manned by Aravind - Tirunelveli, the centre offers
services in the treatment of cataract, refractive errors and glaucoma. The services will be
expanded further to include a wide array of speciality eye diseases.
All the satellite hospitals are linked with Madurai and with each other by telemedicine, facilities
which helps in sharing of available resources optimally.
Postgraduate Training Programmes
Postgraduate training is an integral part of Aravind’s activities. It offers the candidates
excellent opportunities for developing their skills in a high volume clinical setting.
All postgraduate students are posted by rotation to various units in the main hospital, the
free section and to the satellite hospitals. They are trained to prepare full case sheets for
presentation in the presence of senior consultants. The students are posted in the
outpatient department, wards, and operation theatres, and as a result, they are exposed
to all facts of treatment – preoperative, surgical and postoperative. They are provided
guidance in surgery and in using the hi-tech instruments and develop proficiency in
cataract surgery by the end of their residency. They are encouraged to participate in the
various ongoing research projects of the institute and to present papers at state and
national ophthalmic conferences. Special audiotapes, videotapes and variety of
ophthalmic literature are available in the library.
Seminars, symposium, workshops, didactic lectures and various Continuing Medical
Education (CME) programmes are all part of the regular postgraduate teaching
programmes. Candidate performance is regularly assessed through theoretical and
practical examinations by all individual departments. Candidates participate in the
community outreach programme by attending camps as part of their postgraduate
training programmes.

Postgraduate Course in Ophthalmology:
All the PG courses are open to Indian Nationals only
MS in Ophthalmology (3 years)
Selection to the above courses follows a formal application procedure, an entrance
examination and an interview. The candidates are selected by merit, based on their past
academic record and performance in the entrance test and the interview. The entrance
examination will comprise of a MCQ type format encompassing the whole syllabus of
MBBS. Short listed candidates will be eligible to appear for subsequent interview, the
dates of which will be intimated to the candidates.
M .S. (Ophthalmology)
Eligibility: Candidates with MBBS qualification.
Duration: Three years
Admission
On receipt of intimation, the candidate should join the course on the due date. The
admission is provisional, subject to the approval of the qualification and registration
by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University. As per the rules of the Tamil nadu
Dr.MGR Medical University, the following will have to be complied with:

“Eligibility Certificate” obtained from The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University

Higher Secondary Examinations (+2) from Tamilnadu and obtained their MBBS
degree from MGR University, Chennai are not required to submit this.

Register with the Dr. M G R Medical University within 15 days of admission by
applying in the prescribed form with the stipulated fees.

It is instructed that the students must produce the Eligibility Certificate at the time
of joining the course. All the students must produce the Transfer Certificate in
original or Migration Certificate from other Universities at the time of applying for
Eligibility Certificate. Any clarifications regarding the same may be directed to the
authorities of The Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai.

Undertaking for MS (Ophthalmology) Course:
As per the similar guidelines of the Directorate of Medical Education, Government of
Tamil Nadu, selected candidates on admission to MS postgraduate course should
execute a bond for a sum of Rs.20,00,000/- (Rupees Twenty Lakhs only)
undertaking that they shall work at Aravind Eye Care System for a period of not
less than 2 years after the completion of their course. During this work internship,
the candidates may be deployed to any of the satellite hospitals. This arrangement
strengthens the commitment of the institute to reach out to the poor in the community.
Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO)
Eligibility: MBBS degree from any college recognized by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR
Medical University.
Duration: Two years
Admission
On receipt of intimation, the candidate should join the course on the due date. The
admission is provisional, subject to the approval of the qualification and acceptance for
registration by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University. As per the rules of the
Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University, the following will have to be complied with:

General Information
Eligibility
1. Candidates with MBBS degree from a University recognized by Indian Medical
Council are eligible to apply. They should submit the degree certificate of compulsory
rotary internship, and also registration certificate from the Medical Council in original.
2. Candidates have to fulfill the criteria prescribed by the Government of Tamilnadu
with regard to the eligibility of application in reference to the date of completion of the
MBBS course.
3. The candidates should possess the permanent Medical Registration Certificate of the
States or of India at the time of counseling for allotment of seats.
Selection
Selection will be based on academic performance, entrance test, experience,
aptitude and interview. The decision of the selection committee will be the final.

All the entries in the application form must be legibly written in the candidate’s own
handwriting.
The documents sent with the application form will not be returned. Hence only photo
copies should be enclosed with the application. Original certificates should be
brought to the interview.
Service candidates are required to submit their application through proper channels.
Candidates who are asked to appear for interview shall bear their expenses for travel
and stay.
Completed applications, along with 2 passport sized photographs with enclosures

7. Incomplete (or) wrongly filled applications and applications received after the due
date will be rejected.

Caution Deposit
Any damage to hospital equipment due to negligence will be adjusted against the
caution deposit and if necessary the stipend.
Rules and Regulations
Any form of ragging is strictly prohibited and will be dealt with strictly, which might
include expulsion of the candidate from the Institution.
Working hours
1. The hospital outpatient working hours are 7.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
2. The theatre work starts at 6.30 a.m.
3. Reporting time for camps will be as per the intimation that will be sent periodically.
Leave
•
During the course the postgraduate and fellowship programme students are eligible
for 15 days of casual leave per year.

Leave can be availed of, only with prior written permission from the Chief Medical
Officer and with intimation to the concerned department in-charge. In case of
emergencies, arrangement should be made to inform the CMO as soon as possible.

The students and fellows are allowed to attend one or two conferences depending on
the duration of the course (State level or All India) during their course, with on duty
permission, at their own expense.
Note
The courses are, full time and no private practice of any kind either directly or indirectly
is permitted. An undertaking of this rule will have to be given at the time of joining the
course. Necessary disciplinary action, including dismissal from the course, will be taken
if the course performance is unsatisfactory.
Library
- Students going for camps or to outstation on leave cannot borrow the library books.
- Journals or reference copies will not be lent out.
- Audio visual materials like tapes, cassettes and slides are only for use in library.
Accommodation
For bachelors or single lady doctors, the hospital will provide accommodation at nominal
rates. Students with families will have to make their own arrangements for their stay.
Food
There is a mess run by the hospital for the inmates of the hostel.
Dress
All the doctors working in Aravind Eye Hospitals should wear decent, acceptable
dresses with overcoat and name badges attached.
Eye camps
All the students and fellows are posted for eye camps regularly, maintaining an equal
opportunity for each candidate.
