BD History
To appreciate why the typical
start of a BD day is anything
but typical, you have to
look back at the Company’s
formative years, which started
over a century ago...
It was a simple handshake between two ambitious
salesmen in Texarkana, Texas, that would thread
the needle to create the fabric of what BD is today.
From its inception in New York in 1897, Maxwell
W. Becton and Colonel Farleigh S. Dickinson grew
their small business into the leading provider of
medical devices and diagnostic systems by treating
their associates as family. This approach
created a culture that’s still prevalent today,
and is the basis of our vision statement, which is:

Over the years, BD has become an innovative sales

BD is a global company with facilities and

several core businesses that play a unique
role within the healthcare industry.
BD Medical Systems
BD Medical Systems includes medical and
consumer divisions that embrace four primary
product areas:
BD Core Medical provides innovative products,
which have had a profound effect on the
performance and welfare of healthcare
professionals. Products include injection
syringes and needles, infusion therapy devices,
anesthesia needles, surgical blades, scrubs and
critical care devices for hospitals and clinics.
BD Consumer Healthcare provides solutions
for people with diabetes to better manage
their condition. With BD blood glucose monitors,
insulin syringes and pen needles, people have
significantly decreased the complexity and pain
associated with managing diabetes. BD Consumer
Healthcare also offers Tensor™ branded elastic
bandages and athletic braces and supports.
BD Pharmaceutical Systems provides pre-fillable
injection needles to the pharmaceutical industry,
which save medical professionals valuable time
and improve their overall level of safety.
BD Ophthalmic Systems, which are known for
their innovation, reliability and precision have
become the tools of choice for many Canadian
Medical professionals. Products include ophthalmic
surgical blades and cannulas used for cataract
and other eye surgery procedures.
BD Biosciences
BD Biosciences’ research and clinical diagnostic
systems are the industry standard for studying
and monitoring patients with HIV. Through drug
discovery and development, immune function
monitoring, and functional genomics,
BD Biosciences has become an invaluable
resource to academic and government
institutions, biotech and pharma companies,
hospitals, reference labs and blood banks.
BD Clinical Laboratory Solutions
BD Clinical Laboratory Solutions includes
Pre-analytical Solutions and Diagnostic Systems.
Both provide systems solutions to clinical
laboratories’ most pressing problems. This approach
enables BD Clinical Laboratory Solutions to
benefit from its established presence in the
laboratory and to leverage the brand equity
of its existing lines.
