Heroes and Hope...
In the fight against tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC),
heroes and hope abound, both in small and large ways.
The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance is dedicated to finding a cure
for tuberous sclerosis complex, while improving the lives of
those affected.
Heroes are found across the country, from the families
caring for a loved one with TSC on a daily basis to
champions for our cause who help increase awareness
or raise funds on our behalf to scientists working
tirelessly to find better treatments and a cure to
healthcare professionals and physicians providing
compassionate care.
Hope focuses on the future—a world in which no
one has to endure the devastating effects of tuberous
sclerosis complex.
Throughout 2007, the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance’s
heroes helped give hope to thousands as the
organization moved forward on several fronts. Four
of these special heroes were named TS Alliance
Volunteers of the Year: Chris Hawkey, Susan Jorski,
Mark Martin and Maureen Reyes, and a special care
provider—Dr. David Franz—earned the prestigious
Manual R. Gomez Award.
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a devastating multi-system
disorder that causes tumors to form in various organs, primarily
the brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, liver, skin and lungs. TSC is a
leading genetic cause of epilepsy and autism. More than 50,000
Americans suffer from TSC. Currently there is no cure.

dentifying better treatments for TSC and ultimately
finding a cure are two of the most important goals
for the TS Alliance. Therefore, the organization
invests heavily in projects that work toward achieving
those aspirations. In 2007, the TS Alliance spent a
total of $1.1 million on research projects, including
the TSC Natural History Database and grant awards.
Highlights include:
TSC Natural History Database Project
One of the puzzling and devastating things about
TSC is that it affects every single person differently.
Until now, there has been no way to document how
TSC progresses over a lifetime, or if there are specific
correlations between TSC gene mutations and how
it impacts a person’s health. During the past three
years, the TS Alliance has been developing a TSC
Natural History Database, which is intended to
answer some of those questions.

Community Support
P
roviding support is one cornerstone of our mission to
“improve the lives of those affected” by TSC. The
TS Alliance and its volunteers fulfill this goal by
providing peer-to-peer contact in our Matching
Program and Support Network, offering vibrant
online discussion groups, and operating a toll-free
number with access to a fulltime Director of
Outreach and Advocacy.
• 299 individuals in 47 states and Puerto Rico
serve as Support Network volunteers offering a
hand of support to others in their local area.
• 169 individuals in 47 states provide peer
support for those seeking information on a
particular topic area or manifestation of TSC
• 650 individuals participate in our online
community support for parents/caregivers,
adult with TSC, grandparents and teens.
• In communities across the country, 2,599
individuals stood beside us as we Stepped
Forward to Cure TSC.
• Hundreds of free information packets and
publications mailed upon request, including
the updated 2007 version of “Introduction to
TSC” and a new booklet called “In Their Own
Words: Personal Journeys with TSC.”
• The TS Alliance website continues to be a major
resource, garnering an average of 1 million hits
monthly.
Maureen Reyes is a long-time leader of the TS
Alliance’s online discussion groups, which offer
thousands of people around the world immediate
access to others affected by TSC. Maureen is the
“mother of our online community. When someone
reaches out for helping hand or a cyber hug, you
will certainly find Maureen right there, anytime, day
or night.”
6
Government Advocacy
T
he TS Alliance and its constituents work tirelessly
to increase Federal funding for TSC research in
a variety of ways, including personal visits to
Congressional members, letter and email campaigns,
and meetings with Federal agencies. In 2007,
advocacy efforts helped secure $4 million in fiscal
year 2008 for the Tuberous Sclerosis Complex
Research Program at the Department of Defense.
Highlights include:
• 215 constituent visits to Congressional offices
during March 2007
• 54 Representatives signed the House Dear
Colleague letter
• 19 Senators signed a Senate Dear Colleague
letter
• Directive language secured for the Centers for
Disease Control and seven institutes at the
National Institutes of Health in the fiscal year
2008 Labor-Health and Human ServicesEducation Appropriations Act.
Mark Martin and his son both have TSC,
leading Mark to be a leader in seeking
increased federal funding for TSC
research by advocating on Capital Hill,
as well as reaching out to other adults
with the disease. “Mark brings a unique
perspective as an adult and parent and as
such, he understands the needs, desires
and frustrations of everyone with TSC.”
7
Fund Development
P
8
eople from across the United
States help the TS Alliance
raise much-needed funds by
organizing events ranging from
garage sales to dinners to
walkathons to star-studded
comedy nights. Others raise
money on their own through
letter writing or, like Chris
Hawkey, donating proceeds
from his CD. No matter the
amount, these efforts help our
organization provide services
and programs to all those
affected by TSC and also
increase awareness of our
cause.
For 2007, special events raised more than $2 million
for the TS Alliance. 2007 highlights include:
• With the heartfelt and loyal support of Andy and
Mary Bott, The Original Food & Wine Event
celebrated its 15th and final year, raising an
astonishing $818,000 over the years.
• Champions of our cause nationwide participated
in 25 Step Forward to Cure TSC Walkathons
raising $837,127 in the hope of a cure.
• Two spectacular events were held in New York
this past year with the help of our heroes from
the New York Metro Area and New Jersey.
Giant Steps to the Cure, a casual sports themed
gala, counted among its supporters honorary
chair Tiki Barber, host Julianne Moore, Chris
Hawkey Power Play and a “team” of sports
legends and raised more than $325,000. The
event honored long-time supporters Elizabeth
Buchsbaum and Francine Ostrow, Marc and
Marla Shapses and Dr. Howard Weiner. In
November, the TS Alliance hosted an event in
conjunction with Julianne Moore’s Broadway
debut in The Vertical Hour.
• John Roberts, CNN Morning Anchor, generously
loaned his support to the DC Food & Wine
Tasting as emcee and honorary chair. John’s
close friends have a grandson with TSC and his
meaningful support was in their honor.
• Julianne Moore selected the TS Alliance as her
charity of choice for the Cartier LOVE Day with
proceeds from the sale of their lavender LOVE
Day bracelets going to the TS Alliance.
• Our signature event, Comedy for a Cure,
continued its successful run in Hollywood,
honoring Patricia Heaton as well as House and
its creator David Shore. Teri Hatcher served as
honorary chair and performers Ray Romano,
Jeff Garland and Sherri Shepherd added star
power to the evening. To date, Comedy for a
Cure Hollywood has raised nearly $1 million.
Comedy for a Cure Boston enjoyed its second
successful year with Jimmy Dunn once again
loaning his support as honorary chair and Tony
V. jumping in as auctioneer as well as performer.

The Eternal Flame Society
Endowment Named Funds
The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Endowment Fund
is a separate fiduciary organization specifically
chartered to receive gifts that will be used to
generate a permanent income stream that will
help fulfill the mission of the TS Alliance. The
Endowment Fund will ensure that the TS Alliance
has a permanent source of funding to better serve
families touched by tuberous sclerosis complex
through research, support services and education.
“Keepers of the Flame” include members of the
TS Alliance community who have designated a
planned gift through their wills or estate to the
TS Alliance Endowment Fund or the TS Alliance.
We are pleased to honor the following distinguished
members of the Eternal Flame Society:
For gifts of $25,000 or more (or with a pledge
payable over five years), a donor has the opportunity
to name a fund in honor of someone. We are deeply
grateful for the following named funds:

Upon her passing, Alma Tutrone left a legacy gift of
$2.75 million to the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance
Endowment Fund, a testament to her 30-year friendship
with Michael Augustine, one of the founding fathers of
Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Endowment Fund. This is
the single largest gift the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance or
the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Endowment Fund has
ever received, and Alma’s generosity will have a lasting
impact on the organization.
