A.

The following parts and item list is intended to be a comprehensive list of items needed to
provide power and control capabilities for the Black Box Theatre. Distributed power needs
to be capable of providing both non-dim power for modern LED light fixtures and dimmable
power for traditional sources should they be brought into the space. Power and control items
contained herein are subject to review and approval at shop drawing phase pending final
review with owner/operator and installer.

Shop drawings: Clearly indicate fixture type, name of the job, and Architect. Contractor shall
submit all lighting fixture, lamp, and ballast shop drawings at one time, in one package. Any
re-submittals shall include all fixtures, lamps, or ballasts previously rejected or requiring further
information. Specialty fixtures, custom, or modified fixtures may be submitted as a separate
package.
C.
Shop Drawings: Indicate dimensions and components for each fixture that is not a standard
product of the manufacturer.
D.
Shop Drawings: Reproductions of the contract drawings are not acceptable as shop drawings and
shall not be submitted.
E.
Shop Drawing Review: Review does not waive contract requirements.
F.
Working Samples: The following types shall be submitted for review and final approval. These
samples shall be 120 volt with cord and plug attached, and shall include specified lamp(s) and all
modifications necessary to meet the requirements specified in the Contract Documents
G.
Catalog Cuts: If lacking sufficient detail to indicate compliance with contract documents, catalog
cuts will not be accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, fixture type designation,
manufacturer's complete catalog number, voltage, lamp type, specific ballast information, and any
modifications necessary to meet the requirements of the contract documents.

Product Data: Provide dimensions, ratings, and performance data.

Photometric Data: Where indicated on the fixture schedule and for all substitutions, supply
complete photometric data for the fixture, including optical performance, completed by an
independent testing laboratory developed according to the standards of the Illuminating
Engineering Society of North America as follows:

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in
this section with minimum 10 years documented experience.
B.
Products: Listed and classified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. or other nationally recognized
testing firm acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction as suitable for the purpose specified
and indicated.
C.
Warranty: Fluorescent Electronic Ballasts: manufacturer(s) shall be regularly employed in the
manufacturer of electronic ballasts and have a minimum of 10 years experience in the
manufacturing of electronic ballasts.
1.
Furnish the electronic ballast manufacturers' warranty.
2.
Warranty period shall not be less than 5 years from the date of manufacture of the electronic
ballast. If ballast fails within the warranty period, manufacturer shall promptly replace

defective ballast and reimburse the Owner $75.00 (seventy five dollars) per ballast, for
replacement labor charges. Replacement ballast shall be identical to, or an improvement
upon, the original ballast design.
D.
Warranty: LED Screw-Base Lamps
1. Warranty period shall not be less than 3 years from date of receipt of lamps. Warranty is to
cover lamp life and lamp output based upon manufacturer’s stated claim of rated life hrs at
70% lumen depreciation. (L70 rating). If lamp fails or its rate of lumen depreciation is
greater than stated, manufacturer shall replace with equal and ship to site.
2. As per fixture specification, lamps shall be fully warranted for use in fixtures and in
conditions to be present at site.
E.
Warranty: LED Lighting Fixtures
1.
Lighting fixtures and all components shall be guaranteed by the fixture manufacturer to be
free from any defects in material and workmanship for a period of three (3) years from the
date of installation.
2.
Integrated LED fixtures warranty shall be for a full 5 years from date of installation and to
include the following criteria: Installation shall occur no later than one year from date of
acceptance by the Owner.
a. Output- Lumen output should not deteriorate from manufacturer’s stated claim or
rated life hrs at 70% lumen depreciation. (L70 rating). If lamp fails or its rate of lumen
depreciation is greater than stated, manufacturer shall replace with equal, provide warranty
repair and ship any fixture or components to site.
b. Color- Color temperature of an installed luminaire shall not shift more than 500°K
either cooler or warmer over a period of 5 years or be subject to manufacturer
replacement/repair.
c.

General defects in workmanship, material or finishes.
Lighting fixture manufacturer shall promptly replace defective fixture or component ballast
and reimburse the Owner for replacement labor charges. Any part or material replaced
under this guarantee shall be guaranteed for an additional one year period from the date of
replacement or the remaining time within the original five years warranty whichever is
greater.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1
MANUFACTURERS
A. Approved Manufacturers: Provide products of firms regularly engaged in the manufacture of
lighting fixtures of types and ratings required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in
similar service for not less than 10 years. The manufacturer of the lighting fixtures shall comply
with the provisions of the appropriate code and standards. All fixtures shall be pretested before

shipping.
B.
Conformance: Fixtures shall be manufactured in strict accordance with the Contract Drawings
and Specifications.
C.
Codes: Materials and installation shall be in accordance with the latest revision of the National
Electrical Code and any applicable Federal, State, and local codes and regulations.
D. UL Listing or other Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory: All fixtures shall be
manufactured in strict accordance with the appropriate and current requirements of the
Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc or other Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. "Standards
for Safety", and others as they may be applicable. Listing shall be provided for each fixture type,
and the appropriate label or labels shall be affixed to each fixture in a position concealing it from
normal view.
E.
Specifications and scale drawings: are intended to convey the salient features, function and
character of the fixtures only, and do not undertake to illustrate or set forth every item or detail
necessary for the work.
F.
Base Bid Manufacturers: Are listed on fixture schedule and specification. Manufacturers listed
without accompanying catalog numbers are responsible for meeting the quality standards and
photometric distribution set by the specified product.
G. Alternate Manufacturers: Identification by means of manufacturer’s names and catalog numbers
is to establish basic features, quality and performance standards. Any substitutions must meet or
exceed these standards.
2.2
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTING FIXTURES
A. Provide products that comply with requirements of NFPA 70 and NFPA 101.
B.
Provide products listed and classified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. or other Nationally
Recognized Testing Laboratory as suitable for the purpose specified and indicated.
C.
Provide accessories and fittings as recommended by manufacturer to properly and completely
install and wire fixtures.
D. Electrical Characteristics: as indicated on Lighting Fixture Schedule in specifications.
E.

Lamps: Contractor shall furnish and install permanent lamps and replace all lamps used as work
lights during construction immediately prior to Substantial Completion.
LUMINAIRES
A. Furnish products as indicated in Schedule in specifications.
B.
Substitutions: See Section 01330 – Substitution Procedures.

Substitutions shall include complete photometric data as outlined in paragraph 1.03G above,
and point by point calculations for the specific conditions on the project. Samples shall be
required for consideration of any substitutions and must be submitted in accordance with the

terms outlined in paragraph 1.3F above.
C.
Omissions: The Owner shall not be held responsible for the omission or absence of any detail,
construction feature, etc. which may be required in the production or installation of the fixtures.
The responsibility of accurately fabricating and installing the fixtures to the fulfillment of this
specification rests with the contractor.
1.
Minor details, not usually indicated on the drawings nor specified, but that are necessary for
the proper execution and completion of the fixtures, shall be included, the same as if they
were herein specified or indicated on the drawings.
D. Luminaire: Shall be complete with all required accessories and attachments as specified and
required to provide a complete an operational installation.
E.
Luminaire Components: All materials, accessories, and other related fixture components shall be
new and free from defects which in any manner may impair their character, appearance, strength,
durability and function, from fabrication to the time of delivery and until final acceptance of the
work.
F.
Luminaire Housings: Shall be so constructed so that all electrical components are easily
accessible and replaceable without removing fixtures from their mountings, or disassembly of
adjacent construction. All exposed metal edges shall be finished smooth and blunt to prevent
injury during handling or installation.
G. Hardware: Shall be captive type construction.
H. Luminaire Finish: All exposed metallic and non-metallic parts of fixtures such as the fixture
body, pendants, canopies, filters, trims, and louvers shall be finished as specified or detailed.
When color or finish is not specified, it shall be as directed by the Architect. The finish of
fixtures shall be uniform in quality and free from defects such as whirls, discoloration, sand or
dust spots, cracks or chips.
I.
Labels: Inscriptions and labels in fixtures shall be located in unobtrusive places so that they are
not visible to occupants in the completed installation.
J.
Recessed Luminaires: Shall have a thermal protective device in the fixture housing.
K. Luminaire Families: As an example, all varieties of recessed downlights, recessed wall washers
or all custom pendants and sconces, shall be the product of one manufacturer, unless otherwise
specified.
L.
Luminaire Type Omission in the Fixture Schedule: Shall not relieve the Contractor of the
responsibility of furnishing all required fixtures as shown on the Drawings.
M. Luminaire Components:
1.
Fixture parts and components: Shall be made of materials resistant to corrosion and thermal
and mechanical stresses encountered in the normal application and functioning of the
fixtures.
2.
Accessory equipment: Such as starters, sockets and lampholders shall be approved by UL,

CBM and ETL, unless otherwise noted.
3.
Modular Wiring: Connection receptacles shall be supplied on light fixtures as specified in
the lighting fixture schedule. Receptacle configuration shall be compatible with wiring
system as specified under Section No. 16120. Receptacle location shall be coordinated
with the ceiling system contractor and the mechanical contractor.
4.
Conduit Whip: Provide prewired 6 foot flexible conduit whip with line side conduit
connector for all recessed fixtures.
5.
Split Wired Fixtures: Provide 3-conductor prewired for split wired fixtures.
6.
Emergency Lighting Luminaires: Provide identification tag for luminaires connected to the
emergency lighting system.
7.
Aimable or adjustable fixtures: Shall be lockable such that they retain their focus during
relamping.
8.
Hardware: For steel and aluminum fixtures, all screws, bolts, nuts and other fastening and
latching hardware shall be zinc cadmium or equivalent plated. For stainless steel fixtures,
all hardware shall be stainless steel. For bronze fixtures, all hardware shall be stainless steel
or bronze. For brass or brass finished fixtures, all hardware shall be brass.
9.
Lamp Holders
a.
All lamp sockets shall be set so that lamps are positioned in optically correct relation to
fixture components. Lamp sockets shall be rigidly and securely attached by screws to
fixture enclosure or husk, so as to prevent damage to conductor insulation and to
prevent socket turning during lamp replacement. Spring mounted sockets are not
acceptable. Plastic or sheet metal sockets shall not be used unless specified. All lamp
sockets shall be UL listed.
b.
Fluorescent sockets shall have a white urea plastic body and phosphor bronze or
beryllium copper contacts, punch in/twist out type for standard tubular fluorescent
lamps, and push-in/pull-out type for compact fluorescent lamps.
c.
Medium base lamp holders shall be made of porcelain housing and copper screw shells,
incandescent shall be rated at not less than 660 watts, 250 volts. HID lamps requiring
igniter system must be rated at 2500 volts minimum.
10. Cones
a.
Downlight reflectors and cones shall be fabricated from 3002 alloy, 99.5% pure
non-iridescent aluminum reflector sheets with uniform grain structure, 0.050 inch or
heavier unless otherwise shown on drawings; all reflecting surfaces shall be absolutely
free from any tooling marks including spinning lines or indentation caused by riveting
or other assembly techniques. Reflector surface to be mechanically buffed, then
colored with jeweler buffs. No rivets, springs or other hardware shall be visible after
installation.

Reflectors to be acid and alkaline cleaned to remove forming and polishing compounds,

bright dipped in phosphoric and nitric acid. Anodic coating shall be a minimum 0.25
mils for clear reflectors. Specular reflectance to be 86% to 91%.
c.
Dyed reflectors to be processed with a lightfast rating no less than 7. All reflectors to
be double sealed, first in nickel acetate, second in Sandoz Andal sealant.
d.
Upper reflectors for compact fluorescent lamps shall be of a non-iridescent material,
99.85% purity, aluminum flash coating.
11. Lenses:

a.
Acrylic lenses shall be injection molded acrylic plastic, meeting ASTM Specification
D-788-63 for 100% virgin acrylic. The minimum unpenetrated thickness of acrylic
lenses shall be 0.125 inches. Acrylic overlay panels shall be a minimum of 0.040
inches and shall be high transmission type.
b.
Polycarbonate lenses shall be .125 inches thick and shall be able to withstand UL
impact and wet label testing.
c.
Glass lenses shall be optical impact resistant tempered glass.
d.
All lenses shall be held in a 16 gauge frame work. Lenses that provide access for
relamping shall have their frame hinged to the body of the fixture. Lenses that are not
removable shall be positively attached in place.
e.
Provide required lens patterns as specified on schedule.
f.
All panels shall be de-staticized at the factory before shipping.

A. Electronic Fluorescent Ballasts: ANSI C82.11 & IEC Standards for electronic fluorescent
ballasts, suitable for lamps specified. Ballasts shall conform to UL and ANSI specifications and
shall display labels and/or symbols of approval by the UL .

Lamp Crest Factor: less than 1.7
Use maximum lamps per ballasts whenever possible, unless specified otherwise in the
Lighting Fixture Schedule.
Ballasts shall not contain Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB's).
Electronic Compact Fluorescent Ballast: Shall have a minimum of .9 power factor. Ballast
shall have "end of life" shut-down circuit.

Substitutions: See Section – Substitution Procedures.
Luminaire Efficiency: thermal losses should be less than 10% when operated at a steady
state at an average ambient operating temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and optical losses
should be less than 15%.
LEDs: Shall be of the type, wattage, beam spread, efficacy and specific color temperature
designated in the Lighting Fixture Schedule. Manufacturer's recommended operating
temperature shall be met in the design of the luminaire to ensure LED life.
Life and Output: lumen maintenance and life shall be tested per LM-80-08 and shall be rated
at 70% lumen output. Minimum life ratings listed in specification are assuming this
standard.
Warranty: Minimum five years from date of installation.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1
INSTALLATION
A. Install fixtures securely, in a neat and workmanlike manner, as specified in NECA 500
(commercial lighting).
B.
Contractor is responsible for coordinating all mounting hardware, installation and clearances
needed with the work of other divisions for the specific installation.
C.
All lighting equipment shall be installed complete, including canopies, suspensions of proper
lengths, brackets, casings, sockets, holders, reflectors, ballasts, diffusing material, louvers, lamps,
recessing boxes, etc.; all wired and assembled and ready for operation.
D. Surface Mounted Fixtures: Install plumb and square and aligned with building lines and with
each other; secure to prevent movement.

Suspended Ceiling Mounted Fixtures:

Install at locations indicated on reflected ceiling plan.
Support fixtures larger than 2 by 4 feet in size independent of ceiling framing.
Fixtures Recessed in Ceilings: Install to permit removal from below.
Lay-In Ceiling Mounted Fixtures: Install clips to secure fixtures in place.
Suspended Fixtures: Install using pendants supported from swivel hangers, with pendant
length as required for indicated height.
Wall Mounted Fixtures: Install at height as indicated on the drawings.
G. Install accessories furnished with each fixture.
H. Make wiring connections to branch circuit using building wire with insulation suitable for
temperature conditions within fixture; use flexible conduit.
I.
Bond products and metal accessories to branch circuit equipment grounding conductor.
J.
If permanent lighting fixtures are to be used in lieu of temporary lighting facilities during the
construction period, this shall be done only as permitted by the Architect. New lamps shall be
installed and fixtures cleaned at the time of turn-over to the Owner

K. Downlight reflectors shall be installed in place after the project is complete and dust-free or shall
be cleaned prior to the time of turnover to the Owner. Installer shall wear white gloves to
