Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway Norwood, Mass./Xaverian 2012 Fordham Football Prospectus Head Coach - Joe Moorhead As an English major at Fordham, Joe Moorhead surely read Thomas Wolfe’s “You Can’t Go Home Again.” But fortunately for Fordham football fans he didn’t take it to heart as Moorhead returned to his alma mater to assume the position of head football coach in December of 2011, ready to help the Rams ascend the ranks of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. He becomes the fourth alumnus since 1920 to serve as head football coach at Rose Hill, the first since Jim Lansing, who served as the Rams’ mentor from 1966-71. “We are very pleased to bring Joe Moorhead back to Fordham as head coach,” said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham. “As an alumnus of both the University and its football program, he understands, and embodies, the values of a Jesuit education. We believe his experience and leadership will bring new energy to the Rams, on and off the field.” “I’m extremely humbled and enthused to be named the new head football coach at Fordham University,” said Moorhead. “Very few people are afforded the opportunity to be a collegiate head football coach, much less the head coach at their alma mater. I am truly grateful to Father McShane, Vice President Gray, Frank McLaughlin and the rest of the committee for giving me this opportunity.” Moorhead arrives at Fordham with 14 years of collegiate coaching experience, most recently as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Connecticut where he coached the past three years. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010, leading an offensive unit that was second in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring offense and rushing offense in 2010, as the Huskies won the conference title and appeared in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. Following the season, running back Jordan Todman was named Second Team All-America and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, two other offensive players were named First Team AllBIG EAST with Todman (San Diego/sixth round) and Anthony Sherman (Arizona/fifth round) being selected in the NFL draft. In 2009, the UConn offense finished the season as the third most productive offense in the BIG EAST, second in scoring, and Moorhead was nominated for the Frank Broyles Award, presented annually to the Top Assistant Coach in the NCAA FBS. The Huskies finished the season 8-5 and defeated South Carolina in the Papa John’s.com Bowl. Prior to his stay at Connecticut, Moorhead served as an assistant coach at Akron for five years (2004-2008), the final two as the offensive coordinator. In 2008, Akron was one of 17 schools nationally to be ranked among the top 50 in rushing offense (45th at 165.7 yards per game), passing offense (46th at 231.50), total offense (40th at 396.97) and scoring offense (36th at 30.0 points per game). Akron was the most improved school in the nation in 2008 year in terms of total offense and was the sixth-most improved in scoring offense. In the Mid-American Conference (MAC), Akron was third in points per game and turnover margin (plus 0.5) and fourth in rushing yards per game. In 2006, Moorhead was the Akron quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, where he mentored Luke Getsy, who left Akron with 24 different school records. The Zips won the school’s first-ever Mid-American Conference championship and played in the Motor City Bowl in 2005 with Moorhead serving as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Current New York Giant Domenik Hixon set a school single-season record that fall with 1,210 receiving yards under Moorhead's tutelage. Moorhead also has Patriot League experience, serving as an assistant at Georgetown for four seasons from 2000 through 2003, where he had stints as the running backs coach, quarterbacks coach and the offensive coordinator, in his final year. As a collegiate performer at Fordham, Moorhead was a threeyear starter at quarterback and was a team captain as a senior. He was a Second Team All-Patriot League pick as a senior, finishing 13th nationally in total offense, and graduated with school single season records for completions and passing yards. Following his collegiate career, Moorhead spent time in the training camp of the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League after playing the 1996 season for the Munich Cowboys of the E.F.A.F. Moorhead, a native of Pittsburgh, received an English degree from Fordham in 1996. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children: daughter Kyra (8), son Mason (6) and son Donovan (2). 7 2012 Fordham Football Prospectus Fordham Football Spring Preview OFFENSE The 2012 Fordham offense will look to rebound from last year with a more explosive game plan, and with seven starters back, the Rams are optimistic that the offense can get back on track in 2012. Quarterback Moorhead, a former recordsetting Ram quarterback, will have to decide on a starter and he has a group to choose from that includes two players who started last year, led by Ryan Higgins, who started the final seven games on 2011. He completed 151 of 263 passes for 1,788 yards and seven touchdowns. Peter Maetzold, who started the first four games of 2011, completed 70 of 117 passes for 668 yards and four touchdowns on the season. Also competing at quarterback is Ryan Higgins Griffin Murphy, who was the Fordham wildcat quarterback last year, rushing 27 times for 79 yards and he also caught a pair of passes out of the backfield for 24 yards. Others in the quarterback fold include Nick Glogau and Oliver Hildebrandt. Running Backs The Rams lost last year ’s leading rusher, Darryl Whiting, to graduation but return three players who recorded carries last fall, led by Langston Lacroix and Carlton Koonce. Lacroix was the team’s second leading ground gainer in 2011 with 135 yards on 39 carries while Koonce rushed 28 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns and he also was the team’s second leading receiver, catching 38 passes for 309 Carlton Koonce yards and four touchdowns, tying him for the team leading receiving scores. Also competing for carries this spring will be Jeramie Brown while Kevin Soares, Kevin Scanlon and Jack Bandazian will line up at fullback. Wide Receivers The good news on offense for the Rams is that they return most of the receiving corps from last fall, led by Blake Wayne, Greg Wilson, Brian Wetzel, Sam Ajala and Andrew Spanarkel along with tight ends Dan Light and Nick Talbert. Wayne, a converted quarterback, led the 2011 Rams with 38 catches for 349 yards and one touchdown while Wetzel was third 8 on the team with 36 catches for 493 yards. Wilson hauled in 26 passes for a team-best 539 yards (207 yards/catch) and four touchdowns while Light (23) and Ajala (15) also finished with double digit catches last year. Also lining up at wide out this spring are Nick Talbert, Andrew Spanarkel and Lourenzo Smith, who all caught at least one pass last year, along with Adam Malkiewicz, Marc DeSisto, Stephen Hodge, Alex Leo, James Avadesian and Daniel Lulgjuraj. Blake Wayne Offensive Line Of course, the offense will only go as far as the offensive line allows it and the good news for Fordham is that the Rams return 2011 starters Robert Kubacki (right tackle), Steven Tapia (right guard) and Thomas Fisher (left tackle). Last year, Tapia and Fisher started every game while Kubacki started six. Also seeing time on the offensive line this spring are John Hohlt, Andrew Milmore, Chris Steven Tapia Watkins, Matt Stolte and Alex Locker, who all saw time on the line last year. Locker started four games at right tackle last fall while Milmore started three games at left tackle. Also back is 2010 starter Lloyd Morrison, who sat out last year, along with Mason Halter, Joseph Mizera and Anthony Perrone. DEFENSE The Fordgham defense returns eight starters, including four of the top five tacklers, and ranked third in the Patriot League in passing defense last year. But Moorhead will look for the squad to improve on their rushing defense as well as to increase the number of takeaways as the Rams managed just 13 last fall. Defensive Line The Rams will have to replace two starters on the defensive line but that task could be made easier by the return of Justin Yancey, who missed all but one game last year with an injury. In 2010, Yancey appeared in all eleven games as a freshman for the Rams, starting eight at nose guard. He led all freshmen and all defensive linemen with 41 total tackles, 28 solo, including a team-high 10.5 for loss and tied for third in the Patriot League in tackles for loss/ game (0.95) and tied for 13th in sacks/game (0.27). 2012 Fordham Football Prospectus Fordham Football Spring Preview The returning starters on the defensive line are Patrick McGee, who returns for a fifth season after starting ten games at tackle in 2011, and Matthew Sconiers, who started the last four games of the year at defensive end. McGee recorded 20 total tackles last year, including two for loss and one sack, while Sconiers registered eleven. Other returning players who will be seeing time on the defensive line include DeAndre Slate and John LaSure, who both played in all DeAndre Slate eleven games last year. Slate notched 23 total tackles, including 3.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks, while LaSure finished the season with nine stops. Both will be looking to move into the starting lineup this year. William DeLuca, George Apostopoulos, Roman Herman and Eli Tenuta, who is moving over from the offensive side of the ball, will vie for time on the line. Linebackers The linebacking corps returns three of the four starters from 2011, led by Michael Martin, who topped the Rams with 94 total tackles, 51 solo, including three for loss and 1.5 sacks, as he started all eleven games for the Rams. Jake Rodriques, who stepped in and contributed immediately as a freshman, also returns after ranking third on the team last fall with 69 Michael Martin total tackles, 44 solo, including five for loss and 1.5 sacks, as does Nick Womack, who started ten games last fall, recording 38 tackles, including six for loss and 3.5 sacks, both teams highs. Along with the three returning starters, Fordham has a number of other linebackers returning with experience, including Anthony Pesanello, who recorded eleven tackles last year, Austin Hancock and Nick Merino, who each made seven stops in 2011, Brett Biestek, Victor DiFusco, and Richard Foligno. Defensive Backs Fordham returns a plethora of experience in the defensive backfield, led by Brendan Melanophy, a two-year starter at free safety who made 53 stops last year, 35 solo, and broke up a pair of passes, and Ian Williams, who started ten games at cornerback last fall, compiling 54 total tackles, 41 solo, and breaking up a team-best eight passes while also intercepting two. Melanophy and Williams will be joined in the defensive backfield by Vaughn Scott, who started the final eight games of 2011 and recorded 36 tackles, and Jake Dixon, who made six starts at free safety as a freshman last fall, notching 22 tackles. Other returning players with experience in the defensive backfield include Khary Powell, who made 16 tackles last year, Zac Crosby and Kassim Forbes, who both missed the 2011 season with injuries, Robert Palmer, Eric Darnell, Jordan Chapman, who made seven tackles in nine games last fall, De’Nard Pinckney, who appeared in six games as a rookie, Lourenzo Smith and Carter Bragg. Also joining the Fordham defensive backs this spring is Levon Brendan Melanophy Williams, a transfer from Nassau Community College where he made 61 tackles and had two interceptions last fall. SPECIAL TEAMS The Fordham special teams unit is led by All-American punter Patrick Murray. He earned Third Team All-America honors from both the Associated Press and The Sports Network as well as being named the NCAA FCS Punt Performer of the Year by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA). He also added another All-America honor to his resume, being named Second Team All-America by the Patrick Murray Beyond Sports College Network. He became the first Fordham football AllAmerican since Jason Caldwell in 2009. Last fall, Murray punted 49 times for 2,160 yards, an average of 44.1 yards/punt, tops in the Patriot League and third best in the NCAA FCS. He landed 21 of his kicks inside the opponent’s 20 this fall and had 16 of his 49 punts travel more than 50 yards, including a season-long 73-yarder. The 73 yard punt, which came at Rhode Island, tied his career-high and was the second longest punt in school history (the Fordham record is 85 yards by Len Eshmont in 1939). Murray also booted a 73-yard punt at Colgate in 2009. Murray’s 44.1 punting average is the fourth best single season average in Fordham history while his 41.4 career punting average is second on the school’s all-time list and his 5,585 career punting yards in sixth. Also back is placekicker Michael Marando, who connected on all 15 of is PATs last year as well as booting seven field goals, the longest a 41-yarder at Georgetown. Kicker Kevin Levin also returns to the special teams unit as does long snapper Joseph Sullivan. 9 2012 Fordham Football Prospectus 2011 Final Statistics 2011 Fordham Football Fordham University Overall Team Statistics (Final) All games Team Statistics SCORING Points Per Game FIRST DOWNS Rushing Passing Penalty RUSHING YARDAGE Yards gained rushing Yards lost rushing Rushing Attempts Average Per Rush Average Per Game TDs Rushing PASSING YARDAGE Comp-Att-Int Average Per Pass Average Per Catch Average Per Game TDs Passing TOTAL OFFENSE Total Plays Average Per Play Average Per Game KICK RETURNS: #-Yards PUNT RETURNS: #-Yards INT RETURNS: #-Yards KICK RETURN AVERAGE PUNT RETURN AVERAGE INT RETURN AVERAGE FUMBLES-LOST PENALTIES-Yards Average Per Game PUNTS-Yards Average Per Punt Net punt average TIME OF POSSESSION/Game 3RD-DOWN Conversions 3rd-Down Pct 4TH-DOWN Conversions 4th-Down Pct SACKS BY-Yards MISC YARDS TOUCHDOWNS SCORED FIELD GOALS-ATTEMPTS ON-SIDE KICKS RED-ZONE SCORES RED-ZONE TOUCHDOWNS PAT-ATTEMPTS ATTENDANCE Games/Avg Per Game Neutral Site Games Score by Quarters Fordham University Opponents 1st 2nd 42 34 97 106 FOR 145 13.2 192 69 111 12 941 1248 307 352 2.7 85.5 5 2527 229-390-16 6.5 11.0 229.7 11 3468 742 4.7 315.3 60-1062 11-72 6-126 17.7 6.5 21.0 22-9 44-355 32.3 51-2247 44.1 40.9 25:33 67/171 39% 9/27 33% 14-100 0 17 8-18 1-2 (17-28) 61% (10-28) 36% (17-17) 100% 19173 4/4793 3rd 24 73 4th 45 93 OT 0 0 Total 145 369 OPP 369 33.5 261 137 112 12 2801 2991 190 506 5.5 254.6 34 2325 173-284-6 8.2 13.4 211.4 14 5126 790 6.5 466.0 30-682 16-101 16-230 22.7 6.3 14.4 13-7 50-420 38.2 43-1580 36.7 34.1 34:27 70/146 48% 8/15 53% 26-192 8 50 7-12 0-1 (43-52) 83% (38-52) 73% (46-49) 94% 94943 7/13563 0/0 2012 Fordham Football Prospectus 2011 Final Statistics 2011 Fordham Football Fordham University Overall Individual Statistics (Final) All games Rushing gp Darryl Whiting Langston Lacroix Griffin Murphy Carlton Koonce Jamir Livingston Dan Light Blake Wayne Doug Papy Vaughn Scott Peter Maetzold Ryan Higgins TEAM Total Opponents 11 171 705 37 668 10 39 137 2 135 6 27 87 8 79 11 28 84 7 77 9 14 46 2 44 11 1 13 0 13 11 2 5 0 5 3 3 9 4 5 11 1 0 5 -5 7 26 71 81 -10 8 34 91 114 -23 6 6 0 47 -47 11 352 1248 307 941 11 506 2991 190 2801 att gain loss Passing gp Ryan Higgins Peter Maetzold Doug Papy Griffin Murphy Brad Pierre Vaughn Scott Total Opponents 8 7 3 6 11 11 11 11 effic comp-att-int 114.94 112.23 146.20 -10.93 352.00 0.00 114.25 141.73 no. 151-263-11 70-117-4 6-6-0 1-3-1 1-1-0 0-0-0 229-390-16 173-284-6 net avg td 3.9 1 3.5 1 2.9 0 2.8 2 3.1 0 13.0 0 2.5 0 1.7 0 -5.0 0 -0.4 1 -0.7 0 -7.8 0 2.7 5 5.5 34 pct lg avg/g Punt Returns no. yds avg td lg 62 18 17 16 14 13 5 7 0 19 15 0 62 60 Greg Wilson Jordan Chapman Patrick McGee Aaron Mays Total Opponents 8 1 1 1 11 16 57 -5 20 0 72 101 0 0 0 0 0 0 15 0 0 0 15 47 Interceptions no. yds avg td lg Nick Womack Ian Williams Vaughn Scott Andre Delaire Total Opponents 2 2 1 1 6 16 100 0 0 24 126 230 lg avg/g Kick Returns no. yds avg td 82 60 13 8 30 0 82 71 Lourenzo Smith Jamir Livingston Ian Williams Vaughn Scott Greg Wilson Dan Light G.
