BelowareguidelinestobeusedfortheColumbusFireportionoftheMobileFoodVendingUnitsafetyinspections.Thisisalistdoesnotcover
everypossibleitemthatwillbeinspected,nordoesmeetingalltheguidelineslistedbelowguaranteethataunitwillpassinspection.
TheCFDinspectionisanoperationalsafetyinspectiononlyoftheMFVUonthedatethatitisinspected.ItisnotanapprovaloftheMFVU’s
design,construction,roadworthinessoranindicationofthelongtermsafetyofitscombinedelements.CFDreservestherighttomodifythese
guidelinesasneeded.
Itisadvisedthatallelectrical,ventilationandpropane/naturalgaspiping,tanks,fittings,appliancesandsystemsbeconstructedandinstalled
bylicensedbondedprofessionalsinaccordancewithNFPA,DOTandOhioFireCodestandards.
AllFireDepartmentMobileFoodVendingUnitinspectionswilltakeplaceattheCityofColumbusFirePreventionBureau3639ParsonsAve.By

Unitsmustarrivereadyforoperation.Allsystemsmayberequiredtobedemonstrated:cooking,electricalandventilation.
AppropriatePaperwork:
•FireInspectionformissuedbyLicenseBureauwithtruck/traileridentificationinformation;e.g.(VIN,SNormanufacturerID,LicensePlate).
ThisformwillbereceivedfromtheSafetyLicenseSectionaspartoftheapplicationprocess.
Propane:
•Propane/naturalgaspipingmustbeconstructedandinstalledinaccordancewithmanufacturer’srecommendations.Propane/naturalgas
linesthatareroutedbeneathanMFVUmustbeconstructedwithrigidpipe.IncludespipingtoLPgenerators.
•Anypropane/naturalgaslinethatpenetratesawall/partitionmustbeconstructedofrigidpiping.
•Anypropane/naturalgasline/connectorthatitisnoteasilyidentifiableastoitsconstructionortypewillnotbeallowedandtheburdenof
proofthatitisbeingusedaccordingtomanufacturer’srecommendationswillbeontheMFVUowner.
•AllpropanetanksDOTapproved(withinre-qualificationdate)nottoexceed200lbtotalforalltanks.Paintingoftanksthatobscuretank
manufacturingorqualificationinformationwillnotbeapproved.
•Alltankssecurelymountedwithmetaltoexteriorofvehicle.
•Rearmountedtanksatleast36”abovegroundtobottomoftank.
•Noquickdisconnectsonanyexteriorpropanetanks(quickdisconnectsonchassismountedtanksmaybeallowed).
•NocopperlinesconnectedtoLPGtanks.
•Rubberpropanehosefromregulatortotanktobestamped“ApprovedforLPGas350psi”.
•Adailypropanesystemleakcheckshouldbeperformedpriortoputtingtheunitintoserviceandafteranymovementofthevehicleandafter
movement/changeoradditionofanygasfedappliance.TheseleakchecksshallbeperformedwithaULlistedflammablegasleakdetector.
•Exterioremergencyshutoffsufficienttostopthesupplyfromallpropane/naturalgastanks.Requiredemergencyshutoffsign.
Extinguishers:
•Allunitswillhaveatleast(1)3A:40B-Cratedextinguisher(1A:20B-Cforpushcarts).
•Anyunitusingadeepfryerelectricorgaswill,inadditiontotheaboveextinguisher,haveatleast(1)6Ltype“K”wetchemicalextinguisher.

•FireextinguishersshallbearacurrentinspectiontagvalidatedwithinthepasttwelvemonthsORareceiptofpurchasewithinthelast12
monthsshallbeavailableforinspection.
Truck/TrailerVentilation:
•ItisrecommendedthatanyunitusinganappliancethatproducesgreaseladenvaporsshouldhaveaType1hoodsysteminstalled.
•Hoodsystemsshallbeofcommercialgrade:inspected,cleanedandmaintainedpertheOhioFireCode.
•Alltrucks/trailersmustbeequippedwithaworkingadequateventilationsystem.Small-trailerswillbeevaluatedforadequateventilationon
acasebycasebasis.
•Unitswithdeepfryers(electrical/propane/naturalgas)musthaveacommercial/restaurantgradeventilationsystem.
CookingAppliances:
•AllcookingappliancesmustbelistedbyUnderwritersLaboratoriesorNSFInternationalformobileapplicationsfortheappropriatefueland
beclearlymarkedwiththeappropriateratingsticker.
DetectionSystems:
•Allfoodtrucks/trailersmustbeequippedwithaworkingULlistedcarbonmonoxidedetectorsuitableforcommercialuse.
Signage:
•Signsshallbeclearlyvisibleandofcontrastingcolorsandshallbereadablefromadistanceof25feet.
•Signsshallindicatetypeoffuelpresent(1)“PROPANE’”(2)“NOSMOKING”(3)“EMERGENCYSHUTOFF”.
Electrical:
•Allwiringshouldmeetcommercialrestaurantstandards.
•Noexposedwiring.
Egress/Exits
•Egress/exitsmustbeadequateandunencumberedbystorage,appliancesordesign.
Generators
•Mustbesafelymountedasnottoextendintothepublicrightofway.
•Mustbesecurelymounted.
•Mustbemountedsoasnottoimpactpropane/naturalgassystems.
