WESCO Is Committed to Improving
Contractor Productivity
WESCO asks: Is your distributor your partner? Does your partner deliver “Partnership
Profitability” to your bottom line? WESCO sums up all the variables of an integrated
customer partnership with our contractors in this simple equation:
Partnership
Profitability
To help businesses not only survive, but
also thrive, WESCO offers a variety of
value-added services. By taking advantage
of these special programs, electrical
contracting firms can reduce their labor
costs and increase their efficiency in the
field. One way for contractors to save
time and money is by participating in
WESCO’s special material staging and

Productivity Savings
+
Decreased Product Costs
In addition to streamlining product
delivery, firms also need to boost the
efficiency of their workforce. Vendors
are continually launching new products
to improve ergonomics and save time.
WESCO’s sales representatives can share
a spectrum of products that enable your
electricians to install faster, focus on
the detailed items, and leave simpler
assemblies to be prefabricated offsite.
In addition, WESCO carries a full line of
safety equipment and tools to ensure safe
and expeditious installations. By offering
an array of value-added solutions as well
as products, WESCO is committed to
improving contractors’ bottom lines and
increasing the productivity of their work
force.
4 Toolbox | Volume 1, Issue 2 | www.wesco.com
Five Tips for Staying Productive
1.Stay organized. To stay on schedule
and keep within your budget, keep
your job sites clean and well organized
so your electricians can quickly find
the materials they’re looking for.
4.Explore alternate material delivery
methods. Rather than storing more
material than you need for a project,
look into just-in-time delivery on the
right platform for your installation.
2.Invest in technology. While labor
saving tools can be a significant
upfront investment, they can cut
installation time and ultimately reduce
labor hours and improve productivity.
5.Train your electricians. To keep your
field labor force as productive as
possible, offer continuing education
sessions and provide labor-saving
tips and techniques. WESCO offers
training sessions by in-house and
manufacturer partner experts. Ask
your WESCO Sales Representative for
assistance in scheduling meaningful
training sessions so you can enjoy the
right products and install them in the
most expeditious manner.
3.Purchase quality materials.
Contractors may be tempted to
purchase the cheapest materials on
the market, but oftentimes, it’s more
cost effective to buy quality products,
which will last longer and have a
better return on investment.

Service Wire Products Make
the Grade in Time Savings
Students at one university in West Virginia
will be attending classes this fall in a brand
new applied engineering complex. The $56
million, 150,000 square-foot facility will be
finished ahead of schedule largely due to
the time saved by the electrical contractor.
The drawings and specifications called
for aluminum feeders in conduit for the
power feeders on this job. The estimator
for the contractor ran the numbers using
the FeederMC Cable and ServicePlex®
products from Service Wire for this
project. Initially, the calculated labor
savings was 40% based on usage of these
products, but actual savings in man-hours
greatly exceeded these estimates.
For example, on the second floor there
were eight panels, each 100 amp, with
feeders from the drawings to be 4#1 and
1#6 aluminum cables in 1 ½" EMT conduit.
4#2 and 1#8 copper FeederMC from
Service Wire was substituted in place of
the conduit and aluminum.
The supervisor for this project reported
that he assigned three men to this
installation. They unloaded the reels
of FeederMC first thing in the morning
and at the end of the first day, not only
were all eight feeders in place, strapped
down, with ends stripped, and connectors
installed, but they were in the eight panels
and terminated. This installation was
originally estimated to take 160 manhours to install pipe and wire, but only
took 24 hours with FeederMC.
Another example was the feeder for a
panel, which called for 3#500 KCMl and
1#3/0 aluminum feeder in underground
conduit. The contractor substituted
3#350 KCMl and 1#1/0 copper feeder in
ServicePlex in the same conduit.
10 Toolbox | Volume 1, Issue 2 | www.wesco.com
These feeders were three sets in parallel
conduits. The contractor put one man on
the electric wire tugger,
one man feeding the
cable into the conduit,
and one man watching
for any problems during
the pull. All three sets
were pulled in one
8-hour day for a total of
24 man-hours. Again,
the savings in time and
money were significant.
The design of the
ServicePlex cable is a
uniform twist that is easy
to handle and doesn't
spread as the pull is
being made. Because of the twist, it has
the equivalent of one conductor touching
the walls of the conduit at any one place
in the run, which decreases the pulling
friction and makes the entire process of
the wire pull much easier.
The contractor stated,
“Using the Service Wire
products saved us a lot of
time on this construction,
and we will be using
them again.”

Leviton Medical-Grade Strips
Power Concerns of a Healthcare Facility
Since safety and care quality are at the
forefront of everything a healthcare
facility does, having safe and reliable
electrical connections is paramount.
Recently, a Facilities Director for a
healthcare system in Seattle, Washington
needed a cost-effective solution for power
strips in patient care areas. The solution
had to comply with all of the codes and
standards pertaining to power strip use
in healthcare facilities to ensure patient
safety and to pass regular inspections
from the local AHJ and Joint Commission
Inspector.
Because power strips used in patient care
areas must be UL 1363A and UL 606011 compliant, it was important that a
traditional office power strip wouldn’t be
inadvertently relocated to patient areas
for use with medical equipment. To add
to the concern, some older medical-grade
power strips do not meet the specific
standards of the new regulations for use in
patient care areas.
A Solution from Leviton
Josh Knott, the local Leviton Sales
Representative, met with the Facility
Director and informed him that Leviton
medical-grade power strips are designed
specifically for use in health care facilities,
including patient care areas as defined
by NEC (2011) Article 517. These devices
also satisfy electrical safety requirements
specified in NFPA 99 (2012): Health Care
Facilities Code, and would ensure that
his facilities would be compliant with this
safety regulation.
With this knowledge, the decision to use
medical-grade power strips from Leviton
was an easy one to make.

Install Once and
You're Done for 10 Years!
by Eric R. Wikstrom, Director of Marketing, BRK Brands, Inc.
Alarm Technology is Changing
When you hear the words “10-year” and
“smoke and CO alarms,” what comes
to mind first? Warranty? Life of alarm?
Battery life? Traditionally only BRK’s
smoke alarms have had a 10-year service
life and warranty. CO alarm technology
only allowed the sensor to last for five or
seven years. With recent breakthroughs,
CO sensor technology and alarm design
improvements allow BRK to take that 10year level of performance to most CO alarms
and combination smoke and CO alarms.
Labor and Material Savings
Why is this important? You now have the
choice of hardwired or battery-powered
alarms that are virtually maintenance free.
No battery changes are required under
normal operating conditions. After 10
years, the alarm is simply replaced. This
can provide substantial savings in annual
replacement costs for labor and batteries.
As an industry first, most BRK alarms
that have a CO sensor now have a 10year alarm life, a 10-year CO sensor
life, and a 10-year warranty. Many also
have batteries that last for 10 years.
For example, the new SC9120LBL is a
hardwired smoke/CO combo alarm with
a 10-year battery backup and a locked
battery drawer for security. Also just
introduced is a smoke alarm only version,
the 9120LBL. In addition BRK has a
complete lineup of 10-year sealed battery
powered alarms that meet new codes
as in California, Oregon, or Maryland to
name a few.

Efficiency Equals Profit &
WESCO Makes It Happen
In today’s hyper competitive Construction
marketplace, contractors look for ways
to increase efficiency – doing more with
less and cutting costs wherever possible.
You have asked fewer workers to do more
on the jobsite, yet still need additional
cost-effective ways to source and manage
construction materials.
According to a 2010 study, Construction
Labor and Productivity Management and

High Speed
Xtra Low Friction
(XLF) Industrial Cables
The Low Friction Advantage in
Cable Installation
General Cable’s new High Speed industrial
cable, with Xtra Low Friction (XLF)
technology, facilitates easier and safer
installation conditions. The High Speed
XLF jacket technology allows for significant
reductions in required pulling force, up
to 80% versus standard cables without
pulling lubricant. These pulling efficiencies
translate into time, labor, and money
savings for the electrical contractor.
General Cable’s High Speed XLF
technology has been engineered into
their PVC and high performance CPE and
LSZH low- and medium-voltage product
lines. High Speed XLF cables demonstrate
General Cable’s commitment to the
premium and environmentally conscious
market space by providing a low friction
solution for a full range of commercial,
industrial, and utility applications. These
industrial cables are designed to deliver
reliable performance to meet the rigorous
requirements associated with industrial
applications. Contact your local WESCO
representative for assistance in selecting
the right High Speed industrial cable to
meet your specific project needs.
The Proof Is in the Results!
To demonstrate the performance of
High Speed XLF cables, General Cable
conducted a study simulating worst-case
conditions per NEC® guidelines, defined
as a 300-foot pull with up to 360 degrees
in bends. The testing rig consisted of a
20-foot pull with four 90-degree bends,
which closely correlated to the NEC
guidelines. Three separate General Cable
500 kcmil single conductor 600 V CPE
jacketed cables were pulled into conduit
under the following conditions:
1. High Speed XLF jacketed cable
2. Standard cable with pulling lubricant
3. Standard cable without pulling
lubricant
All cables were pulled into a 2" electrical
metallic (EMT) conduit with a conduit fill
rate of 27.3%, which was verified by a
licensed contractor.
Test results showed little to no difference
in required pulling force when comparing
General Cable’s High Speed cable to the
cables installed with pulling lubricant.
Tests on cable installed without
pulling lubricant were stopped almost
immediately, as the required pull force
prevented completion of the test.
Streamline your installations and simplify
cable pulls using XLF Industrial Cables
from General Cable! To learn more about
this product, and other wire and cable
solutions available from WESCO, submit
