"What's New in Neonatal Infectious Diseases?"
Infections are an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
infection is the most common intrauterine infection and is a major cause of deafness and neurologic
abnormalities. Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) infections in the neonate are uncommon but may cause significant
morbidity, however management of asymptomatic infants potentially exposed to HSV at delivery is a common
situation. Hospitalized neonates are at risk for bacterial infections due, in part, to weak immune defenses and
invasive procedures. The emergence of multidrug resistant
organisms (MDRO) as pathogens in neonatal infections is of great concern. This session will present updated
approaches to prevention and treatment of both CMV and HSV infections and prevention
and management of MDRO in the NICU.

"Medication Considerations in Neonatal Patients"
There is often little evidence regarding the safety and efficacy for medications used in the NICU and some
medications may have significant side effects in neonatal patients. Two groups of medications identified by
neonatologists as overused in their patients are anti-reflux medications and antibiotics. This session will
focus on these medications as well as other considerations for the use of certain medications in the
treatment of neonatal patients.
