Infections are an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common intrauterine infection and is a major cause of deafness and neurologic abnormalities. Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) infections in the neonate are uncommon but may cause significant morbidity, however management of asymptomatic infants potentially exposed to HSV at delivery is a common situation. Hospitalized neonates are at risk for bacterial infections due, in part, to weak immune defenses and invasive procedures. The emergence of multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO) as pathogens in neonatal infections is of great concern. This session will present updated approaches to prevention and treatment of both CMV and HSV infections and prevention and management of MDRO in the NICU. Moderators: Drs. Mary Nock and Dennis Murray 1:30 – 1:35pm Welcome and Introduction 1:35 – 2:10pm Diagnosis and Treatment of CMV Infection During Pregnancy Dr. Sallie Permar 2:10 – 2:45pm Diagnosis and Treatment of Neonates with Congenital CMV Dr. Shannon Ross 2:45 – 3:20pm Treatment of Neonates Exposed to and Infected with HSV Dr. Michael Brady 3:20 – 3:30pm Break 3:30 – 4:05pm Approach to Multi-drug Resistant Organisms in the NICU Dr. Claudia Hoyen 4:05 – 4:40pm Antibiotic Stewardship Programs Dr. Sameer Patel Young Investigator Awards 4:40 – 4:45pm Young Investigator Awards Presented By: Dr. Mark Hudak Sponsored by Mead Johnson Nutrition Apgar Award 4:45 – 5:15pm Apgar Award: Dr. Jon Tyson Presented by Dr. Saroj Saigal Sponsored by Abbott Nutrition Trainees and Early Career Neonatologists (TECaN) Reception 5:30 – 7:30pm TECaN Reception Sponsored by Abbott Nutrition 2 Sunday October 12, 2014 Hilton San Diego Bayfront Committee on the Fetus and Newborn 8:00 – 8:30am Update from the Committee on the Fetus and Newborn Dr. Kristi Watterberg Chair, Committee on the Fetus and Newborn Section on Perinatal Pediatrics Program "Medication Considerations in Neonatal Patients" There is often little evidence regarding the safety and efficacy for medications used in the NICU and some medications may have significant side effects in neonatal patients. Two groups of medications identified by neonatologists as overused in their patients are anti-reflux medications and antibiotics. This session will focus on these medications as well as other considerations for the use of certain medications in the treatment of neonatal patients.
