Because we’ve lived in Europe for a while, we have
lots of VHS videotapes in the European TV formats
PAL and SECAM. Before I throw away my old multisystem TV (which is compatible with the European formats), I need to know if I can watch my European tapes
(played on a multisystem VCR) on an HDTV monitor.
What do you think?
You’re going to need a converter box for HDTV.
Until now you’ve only been dealing with the
incompatibility of international TV standards. Traditional U.S. sets use NTSC format (national television
system committee), while many European TVs use
PAL (phase alternate line). French TV uses SECAM (a
French acronym for sequential color with memory.) The
three standards differ primarily in the number of lines
per picture, which is why you needed a multisystem
VCR and TV to handle them all.
Now you’ll need an up-converter box between your
VCR and your HDTV. Why? HDTV displays up to twice
as many lines per picture as PAL, SECAM or NTSC, and
as a result can’t use those signals.
You could buy a multisystem HDTV with a built-in
converter (accepts signals in PAL, SECAM or NTSC
formats). A multisystem 42-inch LCD TV costs around
$700.
Or you could buy a separate up-converter box ($330
and up) that will work with any HDTV. Some will convert PAL, SECAM and NTSC video signals into HD format, while others convert only NTSC and PAL.

Q
I’m having problems with Internet Explorer, particularly when I try to open my Gmail account. I get
the message “Internet Explorer has stopped working,”
followed by “A problem caused the program to stop
working correctly. Windows will close the program and
notify you if a solution is available.”
I haven’t received any solutions to the problem from
Microsoft, and I’m still not able to open my e-mail. Can
you help?
Microsoft says there are several possible causes,
but offers to help discover your problem through an
analysis of the software on your PC.
If Internet Explorer won’t keep working long enough
to try that, you could switch to the Firefox browser instead.
Use Internet Explorer to download Firefox . Like any
software, Firefox has its own issues, but it’s normally
reliable.

Google launched a “Call
phone” feature recently
within its e-mail service,
Gmail, that lets you make
free long-distance calls in
the U.S. and Canada to any
landline or mobile phone. The
feature uses your computer’s
microphone and speakers
to complete the call, similar
to a clear-sounding speaker
phone.
Making calls via computer
isn’t new, but Google offering
it on a simple and free platform is a new twist.
The catch is that Google is
only guaranteeing the service
will be free for the next four
months.
International calls through
the service already come
with varying price tags including 2 cents per minute to
France, 10 cents per minute
for calls to Mexico and 99
cents per minute to Nauru,
an island nation in the South

Since the feature’s launch
last week, users have made
at least 10,000,000 calls, ac-
cording to a blog post from
Michael Bolognino, Google
Voice marketing manager.
It’s also clear in Bolognino’s post that the Gmail
calling feature isn’t directly
tied to Google Voice, the company’s Internet based phone
forwarding service.
If you have a Google Voice
number, you can access more
features through the Gmail
feature, but it’s not required.

Setting up the Gmail feature requires you to download a plug-in. A “Call phone”
tab is under the Chat menu in
Gmail, and after you download the plug-in, clicking the
tab brings up a keypad.
Also on the keypad are
links to calling rates, a form
where you can purchase
credit with which to make
international calls and your
recent call history.
It will be interesting to see
the reaction if Gmail folks get
used to the service, and then
have to decide to keep it after
this initial free four months.

Apple unveils new TV box for renting movies, shows

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple
Inc. is refining its plans to
annex the living room into its
entertainment empire.
On Wednesday, Apple
unveiled a smaller, cheaper
version of Apple TV, which
connects to a high-definition television and can show
rented movies and TV shows
from Apple’s own service, plus
content from Netflix, photos
on Flickr, YouTube clips and
more.
The new $99 gadget marks
a slight improvement over
Apple’s first television set-top
box, which went on sale in
2007. The original Apple TV
had to sync with a computer,
a concept most consumers
weren’t ready for, Apple CEO
Steve Jobs said at a media
event Wednesday. It also
didn’t record live television
shows the way TiVo and other
digital recorders did, at a time
when that was becoming a
popular way to watch TV.
“We’ve sold a lot of them,
but it’s never been a huge hit,”
Jobs said of the existing Apple
TV, which went for $229.
Jobs, who presided over a
media event in San Francisco

turtleneck, also unveiled
social media features for its
iTunes software, a new lineup
of iPods including a touchscreen Nano and new software

major players such as Amazon.
com Inc. and Barnes & Noble
Inc. tussling over which can offer
consumers the best, cheapest
e-reader.
Competitor Sony Corp. is now
trying a different tactic: raising
prices.
Sony said Wednesday that it
is adding a touch-screen to its
cheapest electronic-book reader,
the Reader Pocket Edition, while
increasing its price by $29 in a
bet that consumers will be willing
to shell out more for the ability to swipe the screen to turn
pages.
The new Pocket e-reader, available for purchase Wednesday,
uses an infrared sensor to read
finger swipes or taps from a stylus that is included, eliminating
the need for a special overlay
that reduces clarity. Such an
overlay on the device’s screen
has been in use on Sony’s existing Touch Edition and Daily Edition e-readers.

FCC rejects
proposal for free
wireless service
WASHINGTON — Federal regulators have shot down a proposal
by a startup called M2Z Networks
Inc. to build a free, nationwide
wireless broadband network using a spare slice of airwaves.
The Federal Communications
Commission on Wednesday said
it has rejected M2Z’s request
that the agency demand that the
winner of an auction for the radio
spectrum provide free Internet
service to anyone who connects
to it.
That condition would have mirrored M2Z’s business model of
offering free basic wireless broadband access — with speeds of
up to 768 kilobits per second
— that would be supported by
advertising in addition to a faster,
premium service.
M2Z’s plan had encountered
resistance from T-Mobile USA and
other big wireless carriers, which
warned that it would interfere with
their own services.
“A designer allocation auction
that would be tailored for one
company was not in the public’s
interest, especially when that
company was offering broadband
service that is slow by even
yesterday’s standards,” Steve
Largent, head of industry trade
group CTIA-The Wireless Association, said in a statement.

Consumers may have
grown more savvy about

Some television companies
replay episodes on their own
websites, while others allow
viewers to tune in on aggregator sites such as Hulu.
Netflix has made its streaming library available to its
subscribers on many devices,
including Microsoft Corp.’s
Xbox 360 video game system,
Apple’s own iPhone and iPod
and Roku’s set-top boxes.
Roku, anticipating Apple’s announcement, cut the prices of
its devices this week, with the
least expensive now costing
$60. A high-definition version
costs $70 — still $29 less than
the new Apple TV.
In a surprise counterpunch, Amazon.com Inc. on
Wednesday began selling
ABC, Fox and BBC TV shows
for 99 cents each to own, not
just rent. The shows, in both
standard and high-def, are a
mirror image of the content
available to rent on Apple
TV; people can watch on PCs,
using Roku’s set-top box and
through other devices that
carry Amazon’s Video on Demand service.
In Fox’s case, Amazon did
not seek to renegotiate the
wholesale price on the shows,
according a person familiar
with the matter. That means
Amazon has likely cut into
its own profit margin to stay
competitive.

brings potential for abuse

must ensure that teens and
’tweens, who soak up the
latest gee-whiz technology as though taking in air,
understand the security
risks that go along with the
applications. Experts say a
little conversation and some
monitoring can go a long way
in keeping a family safe.
“Parents should be aware
that (geotagging) is an option,” said Regina Lewis,
AOL’s consumer adviser.
“What you don’t want it to be
is geotargeting.”
With Facebook Places,
available now for iPhone and
people using Facebook’s Web
application, friends see and
share locations in the real
world.
For example, someone using an iPhone can comment
on Facebook that they’re
having a latte and tag their
location as Starbucks. The
location of the coffeehouse
is uploaded along with the
comment. If friends scroll
over the geotag, a snapshot
frame of a locator map pops
up and exact coordinates can
be obtained.
While adults have to proactively opt-in so “Everyone”
can see geotags, minors
aren’t allowed to change the
privacy control setting.
Today, AOL is launching
Safe Social, a preteen and
teenage safety platform that
lets parents monitor their
kids’ social networks without
having to “friend” them via
Facebook, Twitter or other
social networks.

doesn’t believe Apple TV will
add significant momentum
to the currently small settop box business. Nor does
McQuivey believe it will
grow into a big moneymaker
for Apple, a company that
has successfully built buzz
around the iPhone and iPad,
such that customers camp out
for hours or days to be among
the first to own one.
Apple TV is “a slightly
smarter Roku, that has a
significantly better marketing push behind it than Roku
did,” McQuivey said. “I’m actually kind of surprised that
Apple didn’t realize that they
weren’t revolutionizing the
category much.”
Instead, McQuivey said he
sees Apple TV as a peripheral
for iPad owners who spent
a lot of money on the coolest new device and might be
willing to spend $99 more to
extend its contents onto the
TV screen.
Additional content at attractive prices may be the
way to get more people interested in Apple TV, McQuivey
said — bundled subscriptions
to TV channels or shows,
plus content from Netflix and
Hulu’s pay offerings, perhaps.
But Apple may continue to
face resistance from media
companies, many of which
fear that such bundles cut
undercut lucrative cable TV
deals and that the 99-cent
television rentals would hurt
higher-priced offerings for
permanent download. Most
episodes currently sell on
iTunes for $1.99 or $2.99.
News Corp., for one, had a
fierce internal debate about
the merits of the 99-cent plan,
but CEO Rupert Murdoch
pushed to accept it, mainly
because of the success of The
Wall Street Journal’s iPad app,
which is free to the Journal’s
paying subscribers, according
to the person familiar with the
matter.
The deal for Fox-created TV
shows including “Glee” is limited to a trial period of several
months, which mollified those
opposed to the plan, the person
said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because
internal discussions were
confidential.
In a public statement, Fox

“is a real inhibitor.”
And although he praised
Apple’s decision to lower the
price of the device itself, he had
doubts about TV rentals for 99
cents.
“Part of me is still wondering if that is too rich for a
consumer to pay, given all
the other options that are out
there to consume and catch up
on TV shows that don’t cost a
thing,” he said.
Michael Gartenberg, a
partner at consulting firm
Altimeter Group, cast a more
optimistic light on Apple’s
chances of making it into consumers’ living rooms, but said
in an interview that he doesn’t
expect it to drastically change
anyone’s TV watching habits.
Instead, it just raises the
stakes for Apple’s competitors.
“This puts a lot of pressure
on the Rokus and the Boxees and all the other minor
league players,” he said.

updates or photos.
Anticipated for months, the
launch of Facebook Places
last week has brought geotagging to the masses, 500 million strong. With geotagging,
a geographic ID — a “geolocation” of latitude and longitude
— can also magically become
an address on a photo, video,
websites and tweets.
Facebook Places follows
the introduction of geotagging to Twitter.com’s 100
million-plus users and on
Foursquare, a mobile application that has attracted
3 million users who compete
for “mayorships” by checking
into a place most often.
The idea of geotagging on
Facebook, however, caused
a stir among parenting and
privacy bloggers because
Facebook “friends” share so
much information about family members and household
activity that geotags could
ultimately put a combination
of dangerous information in
the wrong person’s hands.
What if a boy in your son’s
class posts a Facebook comment about studying after
school and tags your parentfree home?
What if your daughter’s
school chum uploads a picture of your daughter hugging a frail grandparent at
your elderly parents’ home,

Woman should divorce husband
who is just trying to justify affair
Dear Annie: Last May, my 56year-old husband met a woman
on Facebook and quickly became infatuated. She lives in
Germany. We live in Kansas.
My husband thinks he knows
everything about her and believes she is completely on the
up and up. In October, the two
of them plan to meet in Boston
and drive up to Maine for a
week’s vacation. I was informed
of this plan and was specifically
told I was not invited.
My husband sees nothing
wrong with this little excursion. He says he loves me and
doesn’t think he needs to be
bound by the “conventions of
marriage.” If I get upset, he accuses me of not wanting him to
be happy.
We’ve been married for 11
years and had a pretty solid
relationship until this. Now I
feel humiliated and bitter. Am I
wrong? — Mrs. Jerk.
Dear Mrs.: Married people who say they don’t want
to be bound by the conventions of marriage are trying
to justify an affair. Unless
you also want an open marriage, this only benefits him.
It’s time to talk to a lawyer. Then tell him to have a

Dear Annie: My grown children found out their grandmother had died by reading
it in the local paper. We were
never close. At one time, my
husband was having an affair,
and my mother-in-law would
call to give my husband messages from his girlfriend. After
that, I hardly spoke to her, and
she never came to visit again.
My husband and I worked
out our problems and stayed
married. But at his funeral, my
mother-in-law sat next to me,
displacing my children, in order to ask me to return several
items she had given my husband years before.
Obviously, my relationship
with her was not good, but my
children kept in touch. So when
Grandma passed and no one

told us, my children were very
hurt. My children and I went
to the viewing, and my sisterin-law would not even look at
us. My son was so upset about
the entire mess that he walked
out. My daughter and I made a
donation to her favorite charity and never received a thankyou note. Even my husband’s

exchange Christmas cards, has
stopped contact.
It has been a year, but I am
still hurt and angry, and so
are my children. I would like
to contact my sister-in-law, but

Letterman blackmailer
receives early jail release

television producer who tried
to blackmail David Letterman
was freed Thursday after four
months in jail for a plot that
put a spotlight on the comic
icon’s office affairs, city Correction Department records
show.
Robert “Joe” Halderman got
time off for good behavior from
his six-month term at the Rikers Island jail complex, but he
isn’t done with his sentence:
He still has to complete 1,000
hours of community service,
and he’ll be on probation for
five years.
“He survived this, and he’s
glad to be getting off the island,”
said his lawyer, Gerald Shargel.
The former CBS “48 Hours” producer — who’s up for a News
and Documentary Emmy award
this year — is looking for work,
Shargel added.
Halderman, 52, pleaded
guilty earlier this spring to
attempted grand larceny. He
admitted he demanded $2 million in hush money last fall to
keep from revealing personal
information about Letterman, presenting his threat in
a somewhat colorful form: as
an outline for a thinly veiled
screenplay about the “Late
Show” host being ruined by
disclosures about his personal
life.

his lawyer has said. Halderman had peeked in his former
girlfriend’s diary and read her
account of a relationship with
Letterman, her boss — information he used to bolster his
threat to make the comic icon’s
world “collapse around him,”
authorities said.
Halderman, who was divorced at the time, remarried
before going to jail in May,
Shargel said. And while he no
longer has his job at CBS’ “48
Hours,” he has been nominated
for an Emmy for an April 2009
story about an American exchange student charged with
murder in Italy. He was one
of four producers cited for the
story. The news Emmys will be
presented Sept. 27 in New York.
CBS, also home to Letterman’s show, has declined to
discuss whether Halderman
resigned or was fired.
While behind bars, Halderman worked in a jail library
program, among other assignments. His community service
will entail providing job training to people who had been
homeless and convicts getting
out of prison.
While Letterman’s popularity emerged unscathed from
the scandal, the host has said
it was an emotional blow. He
and his wife, Regina Lasko, began dating in 1986 and have a
6-year-old son.
“You take a look at the explosion, and it knocks you down,
and you wake up every morning, and you’re scared and
you’re depressed and sad,” he
said on “Live! With Regis and
Kelly” in April.
“And you kind of got to let
that knock you down and
knock you down, and then
pretty soon you’ve got to start
knocking IT down. And then,
when that happens, you start
looking at the pieces left of
your life.”
A spokesman for Letterman
declined to comment on Halderman’s release.
Axl Rose tries Dublin’s patience

seems, needs a little more patience — and a much louder
alarm clock.
The 48-year-old singer of U.S.
hard-rock band Guns N’ Roses
irritated thousands of his
Dublin fans at the 02 Arena on
Wednesday night by showing
up nearly an hour late — a recurring problem on his band’s
European tour — and then
walking off after an unruly
minority in the crowd hurled
water bottles on the stage.

wouldn’t let Rose leave until
he finished the gig. The band
went back on stage an hour
later to a mostly empty venue
and didn’t stop playing until
nearly 1 a.m.
MCD and the 02 issued
a joint statement criticizing
Rose for having “a long his-
tory for being late on stage,”
but emphasized that “no artist should be subjected to missiles and unknown substances
being thrown at them.”
Rose’s patience snapped after he warned the crowd to
stop throwing things on stage.
“Here is the deal. One more
bottle up here and we go. We
don’t want to go. Your choice,”
he told the crowd during an
abrupt break to the band’s
second song, “Welcome to the
Jungle.”
But when introducing his
other band members before
a following number, up came
another bottle — and off Rose
went to a chorus of boos. “OK,
that’s it. Good night. Have a
nice evening,” he said.
Politicians called on the
promoters to refund tickets
that cost an average of $92.
MCD declined to say whether
anyone would get their money
back.
“Reports say that the lights
came on and the security
people told concertgoers to go
home. Confusion reigned and
thousands of fans had left by
the time the band came back
again on stage to complete
their set,” Irish senator Michael McCarthy said.
Rose is the only remaining original member of Guns
N’ Roses, which was founded
in Los Angeles in 1985 and
achieved chart-topping successes with its first two albums,
“Appetite for Destruction” in
1987 and the double-album “Use
Your Illusion” in 1991.
The band effectively collapsed in the mid-1990s and
Rose became a Malibu semi-recluse. He re-emerged in recent
years with a completely new
band that, after missing a decade of production deadlines,
unveiled the album “Chinese
Democracy” in 2008. It has
received generally positive
reviews but sold poorly compared to the band’s heyday.

Moreno in Miami ruled Thursday that the 29-year-old celebrity socialite didn’t live up to her
contract when refusing interviews with publications in Russia and the United Kingdom.
Hilton’s spokeswoman had no
immediate comment.
Moreno preliminarily valued those lost opportunities at
$160,000. But the judge wants
more information about Hilton’s
contract before finalizing the
amount. The investors initially
wanted $8.3 million.
