Materials
Brownline
Polypropylene
Blueline
All Orion joining systems are available molded from proxylene blueline resin. Proxylene (an
Orion trade name) is a fire retardant, thermoplastic material with excellent resistance to
most common organic and mineral acids, their
salts, strong and weak alkalis and most organic chemicals.
Proxylene is compounded of polypropylene
Type II copolymer with fire retardant additives.
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic material characterized by a stable and highly ordered
steroregular molecular chain. This structure
produces a rigid material with good strength
and aging properties.
Proxylene qualifies for Underwriters
Laboratory certification of V-2 when tested
under UL Subject 94 in thickness of .150 and
over. Based on parameter of ASTM D635,
Proxylene also meets established industry criteria for self-extinguishing. Proxylene qualifies
under ASTM D2843 smoke chamber test with
a maximum value of less than 50. It also does
not contain toxic gases as do PVC and other
petroleum-based plastics.
Acid Waste Piping Systems
Brownline pipe offers all the advantages of
Blueline Proxylene in installations where nonfire retardant materials are acceptable.
Kynar® brand Polyvinylidene
Fluoride (PVDF)
PVDF is the most resistant of all thermoplastics. It offers superior chemical resistance to
many solvents, acids, bases and halogens. It is
designed for extra tough applications where
plastic may not have been considered before.
It has been certified to meet ASTM E-84 and
UL 723 standards for flame spread and smoke
generation. The certification means that for the
first time PVDF piping systems, when
approved, can be used safely in areas such as
air plenums where typically local codes have
prohibited use of plastic pipe due to fear of fire.
In addition to being non-combustible, PVDF
is able to maintain much of its strength and
chemical resistance within a broad temperature
range of –40°F to 285°F.
Sizes from 112" to 12" are offered. Single wall
and double wall configurations are available.
Molded drainage pattern fittings are also
offered.

Orion No-Hub/Plain End Joining System
The Drainage System Engineers and Contractors
Choose
Orion is recognized as an industry leader in the
manufacture of economical, easy-to-install No Hub
drainage systems.
Our exclusive No-Hub coupling greatly simplifies
installation by eliminating the need for expensive tools
such as torque wrenches, power packs and special
tightening tools. One easy-to-use, inexpensive pipe
grooving tool and standard tool box hand tools are all
that are needed to produce tight, leak-free joints
every time. Thus, significant savings can be realized
by specifying and installing Orion Polypropylene or
PVDF drainage systems assembled with a mechanical joining system.
Check the many other features of the No-Hub
drainage system. You’ll see why it has become a
favorite of engineers and contractors in hundreds of
installations in the United States, Canada and Puerto
Rico.

Rionfuse CF®®
(Clamp-Free)
Electrofusion
System
Orion’s state-of-the-art joining system for
polypropylene provides unsurpassed ease of
installation and joint strength.
When ease of installation is a prime consideration, there’s really only one joining system
you should consider . . . the Rionfuse CF®
(Clamp Free) electrofusion system.
The electrofusion coil is made of heavy
gauge wire that is molded right into the
Rionfuse coupling. Each coupling is manufactured using state of-the-art robotic technology
resulting in a system that is made to the highest possible standards. This system provides
a joint strength that has never before been
seen in this industry. Above all, unlike our
competition, the rionfuse CF joint does not
require clamping devices at any time during
installation. Each wire terminal is protected
with shrouds, which means couplings do not
arrive damaged. The serpentine wire configuration and heavy gauge stainless steel wire
means strong durable coils that won’t break.
Check the many features Rionfuse CF®
offers. You’ll see why it quickly has become a
favorite of engineers and contractors in hundreds of installations in the United States,
Canada, Mexico, and around the world.

Fusion
System
The Time Tested Drainage System
from Orion
Socket fusion drainage systems are
durable, strong and tamper-proof. Heat fusion
forms a complete hermetically sealed system
which makes socket fusion systems ideal for
severe usage applications.
Socket fusion type pipe and fittings are
joined by heat fusing the polypropylene or
polyvinylidene fluoride material with an Orion
thermostatically controlled heat tool. In a semimolten state, pipe and fittings are easily joined
to form a strong and permanent sealed joint.
PVDF fittings and pipe are also available in
the socket fusion joining system. However,
because PVDF and PP are dissimilar materials they will not fuse together.
Check these outstanding features of
Orion’s time tested socket fusion systems.
Features
• Fast and easy to install. Only 15–35
seconds per joint is all it takes after the
heat-fusing tool has warmed up
• Several models of economical heat fusing
tools are readily available from Orion
• Completely sealed for strength and
durability
• Forms true hermetically sealed joint
• All identical material, no electrolysis, no
metal in joint

Installing Drainage Systems
Proper installation of Orion drainage systems is extremely important in assuring that
installations perform flawlessly for years.
Supporting a Drainage System
Since Polypropylene has a higher expansion rate than that of other materials, it cannot
be anchored to restrict movement from thermal expansion incurred from chemical reactions or the inadvertent dumping of hot water
into the acid waste system.
Orion recommends the use of clevis or
loop type pipe hangers. If split-ring or other
hanger types are used the hanger should be
a size larger than the pipe being supported
so the polypropylene pipe is free to move.
(For example, if supporting 2" pipe, use 3"
hangers, or when supporting 3" pipe, use
4"hangers, etc.)
Warnings:
• The use of uni-strut type hangers or any
hanger which relies on clamp tightness for
support voids manufacturers warranty.
• Do not clamp a polypropylene pipe system tightly. It must be free to move.

The piping shall be installed over this material and tested in accordance with applicable
plumbing codes.
After testing, initial backfilling must be carefully accomplished, still using No. 10 screen
material until fill surrounds the pipe. When the
selected backfill meets a depth of one diameter
over the pipe, then backfilling can proceed with
normal fill until complete. Fill shall be compacted using hand held compacting equipment
when fill is midway up the pipe, and again when
the fill is over one diameter over the pipe.
Heavy-duty compacting equipment can be
used after the initial backfill is completed.
Testing Procedures
Fully inspect the installed piping for evidence
of mechanical abuse and suspect joints.
Split the system into convenient test sections,
not exceeding 1000 ft. The piping should be
capped off with an expandable plug at the end
of the pipesection to be tested.
should be backfilled between the fittings being tested, prior to testing.
Slowly fill the pipe section with water, taking care to
remove all trapped air in the piping. Use air
release valves in any high spots in the system. Do
not pressurize at this stage.
Leave the pipe for at least one hour, to allow an
equilibrium temperature to be achieved.
Visually check the system for leaks. If clear, check
for and remove any remaining air from the system.
Pressurize the system to a suggested maximum of
10 feet head by means of a standard 10 foot
standing water test using a 10-foot vertical riser, or
a low pressure hand pump.
Leave the line at 10 feet of head pressure for a
period of up to 8 hours, during which time the
water level should not change, (standing water
test) or the pressure gauge reading should not
change (hand pump test).
We suggest that straight lengths of pipe

Design Data
If there is a significant drop in pressure, or extended times
are required to achieve the desired pressure, either joint
leakage has occurred or air is still trapped in the line. In
this event, inspect for joint leaks. If none are found,
check for trapped air - this air must be removed prior to
continuing the test.
If joints are found to be leaking, the system must be fully
drained and the joints repaired. Dry or marginal Rionfuse
joints can be easily re-fused by following the procedures
detailed in this catalog. Leaking joints can be backwelded
if necessary. It should not be necessary to cut out joints,
unless the joint has
previously been overheated, contaminated, fractured or
very badly made in the first place. Where joints have to
be cut out and replaced, the procedures for field cuts and
joint installation detailed in this manual should be followed.
Repeat the 10 feet head test after repairing any
leaking joints, following the procedure described above.
NOTE: Tanks should not be pressure tested.
Pressure:
This system was designed for acid waste of a gravity
nature. Some low-pressure applications are possible, but
should be checked with factory engineering department
before specification or installation. Do not use compressed
air or other compressed gases for testing or use.
The manufacturer DOES NOT RECOMMEND NoHub/Plain End couplings for use in systems used for
dumping hot water appliances (autoclaves, dishwashers,
sterilizers, etc). For these systems, Orion socket fusion is
recommended on main stacks carrying hot water and all
runs within 75 feet of appliance.

Maximum Service Temperatures
As with all plastics, Polypropylene and PDVF have minimum and maximum service temperatures.
Exposure to certain chemicals may effect the maximum service temperatures of plastics and therefore
our chemical compatibility charts should be considered when determining the maximum working temperatures of our piping systems. The joining method will also effect the maximum temperature of any plastic piping system.
The below information can be used as a guide for determining the maximum service temperatures for
polypropylene and PVDF based on water as the medium.

Chemical Resistance of Polypropylene and Polyethylene
Generally speaking, the chemical resistance of polypropylene and polyethylene is considered superior to that of metals. They are unaffected by most inorganic acids, alkalis, and aqueous solutions which rapidly corrode metals, although
some concentrated acids and oxidizing agents can attack them, especially at elevated temperatures.

ORION
Assembly
Joint Assembly
Many of the questions you may have about
assembling Orion No-Hub/Plain End, socket
fusion and electrofusion systems are answered
in this section. However if, after reading this
section you still have questions, please call our
technical department at (913) 342-1653, 8:00 am
– 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday, Central Time.
Cold Weather Assembly
As with all types of plastic piping systems,
installation in cold weather can be difficult and
therefore is not recommended at temperatures
below 40 degreesF unless proper precautions
are taken.
In cold weather installations, the area being
installed must be shielded from the wind and
other outside elements and the joints must be
covered with heating blankets, prior to being
installed.
If joints are installed in cold weather, they may
be difficult to seal. In addition, if above ground
systems are installed in cold temperatures and
the area is later heated; the system will expand,
possibly causing undue stress on the entire system. In view of this, special care must be taken
when designing and installing any plastic piping
system in cold weather. The above information
applies to SocketFusion, Electrofusion and NoHub/Plain End systems.

Grooving pipe in the field
Although Orion’s Acid waste pipe is supplied with factory grooves it may be necessary
to groove cut pipe sections in the field. When
field grooving is necessary, it is accomplished
quickly and simply with an Orion grooving tool.
A tool kit containing all the tools you will need
is available from Orion.
3
STEP 1
Pipe to be used with the No-Hub/Plain End coupling must
be cleanly cut with a thin wheel plastic tubing cutter to
assure a clean square cut.
STEP 2 Bevel and deburr the pipe with a deburring tool.
The pipe must be beveled and deburred prior to grooving
pipe.
5
STEP 4
Turn knob 1⁄4 turn clockwise, to 3 o’clock position.
STEP 5
Pushing against pipe, rotate tool clockwise twice around
pipe. Maintain constant inward pressure against tool at
6
handle during rotation.
STEP 6
Turn knob another 1⁄4 turn to 6 o’clock position. Proceed as
in step 5, remembering to maintain constant inward pressure until no more material is removed from groove.
7
4
STEP 3
With handle of grooving tool up, place knob on handle at
the top or 12 o’clock position.
Insert tool fully onto pipe. Make sure pipe is touching the
stop in the tool.
STEP 7
Return knob to 12 o’clock position and remove tool from
pipe.
STEP 8
Remove any burrs or material from groove edges. See
that all excess material is removed from the grooving tool
before grooving the next piece of pipe.
NOTE: DO NOT TEST ANY ORION PIPING SYSTEM WITH COMPRESSED AIR OR
GASSES. TEST HYDROSTATICALLY ONLY

General Information:
No-Hub/Plain End Assembly
• Satisfactory installation requires careful
measurement.
• Cheating on pipe lengths will cause a bind
allowing joints to leak even when fully tightened.
1
STEP 1
Insert pre-grooved pipe or fitting into coupling until coupling rib snaps. This assures proper fit.
2
• Pipe must be kept clean. Mud, dirt or other foreign
matter in joints could cause leaks.
• Hanging specifications must be followed, taking
care to see that system is not clamped tightly in
hangers. System must be free to move to allow
for thermal contraction and expansion. We
strongly recommend the use of an Orion
installation kit for installing the system. This kit
has been developed to furnish everything
necessary for proper installation of the system.
• The below pictures demonstrate what is tytpically
the proper tightness for the No-Hub/Plain End
coupling as well as an example of over-tightening
and an example of insufficient tightening. Certain
environmental conditions and/or manufacturing
tolerances may require more or less tightening
than is shown in the below examples.
STEP 2
Position stainless steel band so equal amounts of inner
material show on each side of band.
3
STEP 3
Tighten bolts until coupling bars come together at the top
and have a 1/16” to 1/8” gap at the bottom. Do not overtighten. A standard 10" length x1/2” drive ratchet wrench
with 6-point x1/2” socket is recommended.

Rionfuse CF
Cold Weather Assembly Guidelines for
Rionfuse CF
Fusion should NOT be attempted below 30 degrees F. At very cold temperatures, heat
should be brought to the fusion area to bring it to
temperatures above 30 degrees. In addition, all
material should be shielded from the wind and kept dry.
In cold weather applications (below 50 degrees F) the joints should be pre-heated prior to performing
the standard fusion cycle. If the pre-heat cycle is used, the Rionfuser will automatically begin the standard fusion cycle after a 2 minute heat soak cycle (machine will display a countdown timer during this
time). The Rionfuser automatically defaults to a 30 second pre-heat cycle, which is sufficient for
many applications. However, due to a wide range of variables that occur in cold weather installations
(wind, UV absorption, etc) additional pre-heat times may be necessary and it is up the the installing
contractor to determine what the proper pre-heat time is based on these varying field conditions.
The Rionfuser will promt the installer to select the Preheat/Warm Up
Cycle (Option #2)
The warm up time defaults to 30 seconds. This time can be changed
by pressing the up/down arrows to the desired time, then press start.
Once the proper preheat time is entered, the Rionfuser will prompt
the installer to verify the correct information prior to beginning the
fusion cycle. If something is not correct, DO NOT START THE
FUSION CYCLE.
The Rionfuser will display the preheat cycle remaining time (as well
as the weld number)
After completion of the preheat cycle, the Rionfuser will automatically
switch to the 2 minute heat soak time. After completion of the heat
soak cycle, the Rionfuser will automatically begin the
standard fusion cycle.

In some rare instances, it may be necessary to manually override the Rionfuse unit in order to enter
times and/or currents that are not preset in the unit. The Manual Override function can also be used to
fuse other materials-only if the fusion parameters (time and current) are known by the installer.
The basic instructions for using the manual override are as follows:
1. When promted to SELECT FITTING STYLE (from step #7) select option #3 MANUAL OVERRIDE
2. Enter the weld current for the fitting being fused by pressing the UP/DOWN arrows.
The weld current is shown in amps. Once current has been entered, press START.
3. Enter the proper fusion time for the fitting being fused by pressing the UP/DOWN arrows. Once the
proper fusion time has been entered, press start.
4. The machine will ask the installer to “Verify the Weld Data”. If the welding parameters shown on
the diplay are correct, press start to begin the “Manual” fusion cycle. At the end of the fusion
cycle, the unit will stop the fusion and sound an audible alarm. Disconnect the leads and fuse
another fitting if necessary.
Note: If the weld data is incorrect, do not begin the fusion cycle. Disconnect the leads and go back to
step #1. Also, pressing stop will cause the Rionfuser to go back one menu item.
PRECAUTIONS AND ADDITIONAL INSTALLATION SUGGESTIONS
1. Installation is not recommended at ambient temperatures below 40 degrees F. If fusion is to be
performed at below 40 degrees, precautions must be made to be sure that the area is properly
covered and heated.
2. Do not test with compressed air or gases. Test hydrostatically only. Typically a
10ft hydrostatic head pressure test is sufficient.
3. Store pipe and fittings out of direct sunlight. If material is to be stored outside, it should be covered
with a black tarp and shielded from UV rays and kept dry.
4. The Rionfuser has internal re-callibration capabilities. This unit will remind the user when it is time
for factory re-calibration (approximately every 2 years) This maintenance schedule must be strictly
followed to insure proper machine function.
5. Portable generators must be a minimum of 5kW and be dedicated to the Rionfuser Unit only.
Diesel generators will NOT work.
6. The maximum allowable extension cord is 100 ft of 10 gauge wire.
7. The Rionfuser unit allows for normal power variations. It is important to make sure that the power
source can supply a minimum of 100 volts (max of 150) before making Rionfuse joints. The
Rionfuser will not start the fusion cycle if the supply voltage is not within 100-150 volts. If the
Rionfuser cannot maintain output current due to drops in power supply during the fusion cycle, or
there is a loss in continuity during the fusion cycle, the Rionfuser will end the cycle and sound an
audible alarm. If this occurs, the problem with the power source must be corrected (or thecontinu
ity fixed) before attempting to fuse any further joints. If power fluxuations or drops in power are
allowed to continue, leaks in joints may occur as a result.
8. If a leak occurs, the system must be drained and the joints dried out. Re-connect the Rionfuser
leads and fuse the joint using the warm up cycle setting (30 seconds). Upon completion of the
warm up out cycle proceed to step 8 to re-start the standard fusion cycle.
9. Proper support of all joints must be achieved during the fusion and cooling cycles (approx
10 minutes)
10. This brochure is meant to provide guidelines for fusing the Rionfuse CF system. Good
typical plumbing installation practices as well as common sense should also be used. When
in doubt, contact your local Orion Representative for installation suggestions.

but the 525°F does not. NOTE: The newest Orion fusion tools may
have a temperature dial in degrees celcius which has a maximum
temperature of 300°C. If this is the case, see temperature conversion
chart below. Heat tools are factory set, however settings can vary due to
factors such as weather, current variances, cord lengths, generators, etc.
These variables should be checked on site. To increase tool

Hot Gas Welding (Backwelding)
Acid Waste Assembly
Slip Fit and Backwelding (Hot Gas Welding)
Hot Gas Welding (Backwelding)
Welding Procedure
Hot-gas welding (Backwelding) is a method used
primarily as a means of joining certain outer components such as closure joints where one of the other
methods described above are not suitable or possible. 12” Polypropylene as well as any outer PVDF
couplings require the slip fit and backweld method.
Performing field pipe repairs may also require backwelding. This method involves the use of a welding
rod filler material matching that of the material being
joined. The filler material, and immediate
surfaces to be joined are heated by means of a hot
gas, usually air or nitrogen, and then the filler
material is pressed into place along the surfaces to
be joined. With hot gas welding, multiple
passed are usually required. Orion’s speed (hot
gas) welding technique, used in slip-fit systems,
is shown above. When Backwelding is required, the
contractor should be thoroughly trained prior to making
field joints.
When a backwelding kit is purchased from Orion, a
complete booklet on Hot Gas welding is included. An
overview of those welding procedures is summarized
below. (The following guidelines summarize the procedures used for backwelding with Orion’s speed tip
Acid Waste Piping Systems
Line up the area or the two parts that are to be welded together. Make sure that the surfaces are clean,
oil and water free. Gently preheat the area where the
weld is to be started by holding the Orion welding
Gun near the surface and fanning the area. Now
feed the welding rod into the preheat chamber of the
speed tip. This will start to soften the welding rod.
Preheat both the softened welding rod and the area
to be welded for about 5-6 seconds. Gently push the
welding rod through the preheat chamber out of the
front of the nozzle laying if down with pressure on the
area to be welded. DON’T STOP THE MOTION
just gently work the rod through the preheat chamber
and in a slow, fluid motion along the weld until the
desired seam is completed. The welding gun should
always be held at approximately a 45 degree angle
from all surfaces. Typically a triple weld is required and
therefore 3 complete passes should be performed.
