T he Myers Briggs Type Indicator is the most widely used personality instrument in the world. More than two million people take it annually and get classified into 16 broad types that describe their preferences in different areas. The administrators of this tool can do so only after they have gone through an intensive training programme for four full days and then clear the certifying examination with a minimum score of 80%! No mean task this. But for Sri. V Narasimhan and Sri. S Chandrasekaran from Sundaram Learning, it turned out to be an exciting and enriching experience. Both of them passed with flying colours. They now belong to the exclusive set of certified MBTI Trainers in India. We congratulate them on their achievement and also for ensuring that MBTI Testing is now an in-house competency! – P Krishnaier Executive Director 23 Train i ng I found my Leadership Wings at Camp Shristi! E ver since I heard there was a Leadership Programme being planned, my mind kept wondering if we would go to Hrishikesh, which was the venue for the programme the last time it was conducted. However, my bosses were not telling me anything! After a couple of attempts, I realized that they were intentionally not sharing the details of the programme. It was a dream come true when it was announced that the programme would be held closer to Bangalore, just a few hours away from my home. The journey started on 6th Feb from Bangalore to Camp Shristi Day 1: Very quickly all of us were made to feel comfortable and even more sensitively made aware of the surroundings we were in. The baseline of all the learning is nothing is taught. Everything is learnt by us. Yes. That’s the way it is designed. We learnt how conveniently we make our own barriers and how comfortably we follow the patterns. SF Values Contest Winners No Name It extended to our mental blocks in contributing to team goals. Day 2: Started very early in the morning with us listening to the creaks and groans of our unused muscles and nerves. We had an activity involving marbles and in the process learnt the package of essential tools for success in branches. Target fixing, Training, Motivating, Resource allocation, On-The-Job Training, eye on competition, and celebrating small wins. We thought we were just solving a puzzle but ended up learning about the importance of dangers of dependency, and the importance of listening and asking. Sharing our best and not so nice moments of life with one another, we learnt how venting and sharing gives us a fresh start. Sri. Narasimhan's session on Situational Leadership was a superb session. He took us through the four levels of maturity (M1-M4) in a team and helped us map our team members. BATCH IV Branch Designation Prize 3292 Padmanabhan R Neyyattinkara Branch Manager First 5900 Chandrasekaran S Sundaram Learning AGM Second 2350 Shivshankar S Baddi Branch Manager Second BATCH V 24 3561 Deepak Gupta Sangrur Branch Manager First 3113 Prashant Kher Chhindwara Branch Manager Second 2479 Malleswari Nandiraju Bangalore - Car Deputy Manager Second 3507 Bashyam V Mumbai - Santacruz Branch Manager Third We could relate the learning back to our life at our work place and how, as Leaders, we can manage these diverse maturity levels within our teams. I can say each of us fully benefitted from this practical session. Sri. Narasimhan also gave real life examples of connecting to our actual feelings and how we usually undermine the importance of staying in touch with them. This was a great session by itself. It was followed by INVICTUS, the movie on Leadership lessons from the life of Nelson Mandela which was the icing on the cake. Each of us picked up gems of thought from this movie but trying to list them down will be a crime as it has to be watched and experienced. Day 3: Even before day break, we were all experiencing the highs of Zorbing. This had its own learning as we saw our team members breaking their own fears. It was lovely for each of us to experience the support of others when we were in that situation. The MBTI session by Sri. Hariharan was like a magnifying lens for peeping into our own selves. Can such complex tools be simplified to this extent and applied to every aspect of our life? Yes, possible, with a Coach like Sri. Hari. The game ‘Adjective Names’ added more fun especially with me as ‘Massive Malleswari’. Playing the blindfold, we learnt the art of listening more than ever before. Learning about the importance of leadership, teamwork and coordination were all byproducts of our activities. The campfire brought out hidden talents, leaving us with sweet and enjoyable memories. Batch 4, Jan 7 – 10, 2012 Day 4: We started this day with WE CAN...oh no, I TOO CAN. This feeling cannot be replaced and it has to be experienced individually. Dressed in Sundaram T-Shirts, we all tried our best in expressing to our audience (which included our MD) how happy we were to attend this session. Our MD’s speech which covered Market conditions, Competition, Practices in the market place, our USP, and the importance of our family left us raring to go and transfer all we had learnt, back at our workplace and our homes. Being a small group, we were also fortunate to have the advantage of interacting with him. We tried in our own way to surprise our MD, Sri. Narasimhan and Sri. Hariharan and yes, we could. That's the USP of the 5th Batch of the Leadership Retreat. Training I thank each of my mentors who helped me learn from this programme. It was a Retreat indeed...... I can confidently say I found my Leadership Wings and yes, I am going to spread them as wide as I can, to fly as high as I can and each time before I fly, I will ensure others are ready to join me in this flying expedition with the same or even more enthusiasm than what I have experienced in Camp Shristi. – Malleswari Nandiraju Deputy Manager, Bangalore, Wilson Garden Branch Batch 5, Feb 6-9, 2012 Each and every activity right from our journey from Bangalore to Camp Shristi, to our stay in the tents, our dress code of Tracks and T Shirts, Lunch consisting of Udupi dishes (the masala dosa & hanging bananas still watering our mouths), discussions in the Paragola, and all those lovely activities which we choose to call “Barrier Breakers” were all power packed with heights of joy and deep depths of learning. Each of us enjoyed every moment of it. A special mention has to be made of the Sundaram Values Contest. This has wired all our mental faculties to observe and appreciate the Sundaram Values present in each of our acts. Even to this day, my hands itch to write the name and value tag whenever someone in the branch exhibits our Sundaram Values! 25 Happ e ni ng s 100% Collections Splendid! But the borrower had expired and the only information available to me was the guarantor’s name and his phone number. We had been in close touch with the guarantor over the last 4 years. Our Legal Co-ordinator for AP, Sri. Srikrishna, DGM (O) Sri. T Geetha Chari, and Sri. Bavanisankar of ARC team had also accompanied me to follow up on this account. The guarantor was neither paying nor was he denying payment. He just kept postponing the payment indefinitely. Our field staff Rammurthy kept consistently reminding him of the repayment each time he met him. After a discussion with Sri. Srikrishna, in order to show the guarantor that we were serious, we sent him a letter making our intentions very clear about recovering the money with interest. This forced the guarantor to call for negotiation initially, but then he started postponing again. We continued our follow up efforts with persistence and finally, after lengthy discussions, he agreed to pay the amount we had demanded (Rs.2.30 lakhs) and we collected the same. Thanks to Sri. Srikrishna for his timely help and thanks to Sri. Rammurthy, our field staff for his close follow up apart from his regular responsibilities. Our continuous and timely action has helped us recover this 12 year old bad debt. – Sri. K. Mohan at the Women's Day Celebrations at Head Office on March 8, 2012. The very title of his talk made many sit up to the extraordinary power that every woman of the world carried with her. While recalling several instances in the lives of legendary women such as Jijabai, mother of the great Maratha warrior Shivaji, he exhorted women of Sundaram Finance to have such role models in their lives. Each and every thing that a woman says or does touched the world in several ways and that responsibility that women carried was indeed divine, he said. In his talk, our MD said he was happy to note that our company had today employed a good number of women staff. He lauded the efforts of all women staff in contributing to the company's overall growth. In his inaugural address, Sri. Kumaraswami, GM (Services), Sundaram Direct commended the different roles that women played in society. At every stage of her life, a woman shouldered great responsibility and that explained the potential that was inherent in every woman, he said. He wound up his address with a powerful message about women: “ I was born – A Woman was there to hold me – My MOTHER I grew as a child – A Woman was there to care for me and to play with me – My SISTER I went to school – A Woman was there to help me learn – My TEACHER When I needed company, compatibility & love – A Woman was there for me – My WIFE When I became tough – A Woman was there to melt me – My DAUGHTER When I Die – A Woman will be there to absorb me in – My MOTHER LAND” If you are a man, value every woman If you are a woman, be proud to be one. Earlier, the ladies were treated to an hour of fun through a game – Ad Zap – conducted by our colleagues from Sundaram Learning. The game brought out their creativity, team work, co-ordination, time management, marketing skills and the POWER OF ONE. Towards the end, a motivational video showcasing some of the inventions by women that made the lives of all simpler, was played. Earlier, Mrs. Krishna Vijaya, Deputy Manager, Personnel Department rendered the invocation. Bookmarks with each of our corporate values were presented to all women as a take-away from the Celebration. – Corporate Communications 29 Tid - B i t s f o s r a t S g n u Yo ! m a r a d Sun D V Pradyumna son of Sri. T Profile: Sri. T. Nandakumar has been a Yoga consultant for twenty five years now. He specialises in conducting customised Yoga sessions, mostly for corporate clientele. He teaches the asana system as understood by the incomparable Sri. BKS Iyengar and Pranayama as received from his spiritual master, Sri. Swami Purnananda. His career includes many successful Yoga clinics held in Italy and Kuwait. he key word in the above two statements is “atha”, conventionally translated as “now” or “and now”. Each of the two quotes forms the opening aphorism of two outstanding treatises in Sanskrit: the first is attributed to Veda Vyaasa and the second, to Sage Patanjali; mighty minds, both, even if one were to take them to have been just human beings. The aphorisms are each a terse statement of purpose, a serious declaration of scholarly intent. Guruji Iyengar, who brings a distinctive “BKS” flavour to whatever he chooses to deal with, felt the standard translation of the operative word “atha” to be inadequate, somewhat lacking ; and, restless intuition acting as a spur, he consulted many pundits and various pundits’ intellectual output ; and as always, triumphed in his quest, intuition vindicated by objective proof : an altogether more acceptable english of “ atha” should read, “Now, With Divine Blessings”! And Guruji held back the publication of his own masterly translation of Paatanjala Yoga Sutras until he had got what he had been seeking with such beaveresque industry. In retrospect, what echoes in one’s mind is “but of course”, or, “how else could it be?.” For, even if it be argued that Vyaasa and Patanjali were ‘mere mortals’, that they must have been God-conscious may be taken as a fair premise /axiom; and in embarking on such lofty philosophical pursuits as Brahma Sutras ( Vyaasa) and Yoga Sutras ( Patanjali), wasn’t it but natural for them to humbly seek Divine Sanction and Blessings? With that kind of a preamble, then: there is a single Sanskrit word to denote the solemn statement of intent discussed in the opening paragraphs of this piece :Sankalpam, meaning ‘noble resolve’. For those familiar with Hindu Nityakarmas like the sandhyaavandanam, and other domestic socio-religious rituals, the noble resolve or Sankalpam is the (necessary) first step in the proccedings. In and through that resolve, the performer seeks Divine Support to help him accomplish the task at hand without disturbances from forces internal (ego wanderings) and external (distractions from the world without). Modern life-ah, but what a far cry from the days- read Era- of my father (and of his and his and..)! Modern life, muddled life, ma-ad multitasking life and (so rendered) a mechanical life! Kernel gone, empty shell, too, crumbling fast; in which form and appearances count for more, and The noble resolve or Sankalpam is the (necessary) first step in the proccedings. In and through that resolve, the performer seeks Divine Support to help him accomplish the task at hand without disturbances from forces internal (ego wanderings) and external (distractions from the world without) matter matters not, everything is but a soft, shiny wrap... What is needed is nothing short of a Second Renaissance, and the sooner it happens, the better; before the quicksands of this stress-driven, rift-riven life consume society. And for sanity to return, a return to our cultural, traditional roots is a must. Of course, there are signs of positive change, not least encouraging, the growing global interest in Yoga, detractors and their baseless criticism notwithstanding; and in this article, I plead for a return to Sankalpam (even in Yoga practice), for it to reclaim its exalted status in personal and pro life alike. Is it a monumental impossibility that I am proposing? No-o, on the contrary, it is staggeringly simple! All one is required to do, before committing oneself to any task (howsoever seemingly insignificant), is to say mentally, i.e., silently, “I am about to do this task. Let me do it with unbroken focus from start to finish, with Divine Grace helping me”. Its silent solemnity elevates it to being nothing less than a prayer; sankalpam lends the action ( as yet to unfold) a unique vibrancy and potency that ensure its success! Are you an agnostic/ atheist? So be it. Even shorn of its religio-spiritual underpinnings, sankalpam retains sufficient strength, contains enough fibre to help keep the mind sharp throughout the action. A cat squats on its haunches, eyes – read mind- riveted on a tall wall. The cat looks so tiny, and the wall, oh, so unscalably high. But- a single unerring, calculated spring, and the cat’s up on the crest and is, in a trice, lost to sight, vanishing past the onlooker’s ken! Let’s learn from that cat: what it has accomplished with its instinctive approach to life, can we , with our better-honed rational skills, not do better? Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev once said that every single action and utterance of his is (I use the present tense quite deliberately, even if some may think the past tense correct in the grammatical sense) consciousness - driven, as opposed to being habitdictated. I beg to differ: even habits can be practised with a preceding noble resolve, easy awareness can become a cultivated habit, one can be conscious of consciousness itself, no?! And so, my invisible friend going through this: I have decided that my life shall always be Sankalpamguided. Before I tapped out the title, I started with a silent noble resolve. I hope the end product bears its benevolent stamp, that that first step has made this a pleasant reading experience. You the reader, are the judge!
