Those are described in a general way further below and the description may also help to a basic understanding of the nomenclature. a) Wirewound resistors Here we find 2 subgroups, the main difference being the carrier material for the resistive wire. aa) Wirewound resistors, ceramic core, CR-family Series of axial conformally coated resistors, wound on ceramic cores of different dimensions, providing power ratings from 1W to 7W at 70°C. Typically, resistance range is between R10 and 1K0 at nominal tolerances of 5; 2; 1 and 0,5% and TC of 20 or less ppm/ °C. Included is a subfamily CRF, flameproof and failsate for safety applications. 7 ab) Wirewound resistors, glassfibre core, K-family The resistive wire is continiously wound on a glassfibre core, a special method is used for the internal contact between resistive wire and terminals. This family is deeply structured in terms of size and styles. Resistance range is typically between 0R1 and some kiloOhms at tolerances of 5 and 10%, nominal power ranges from 1W to 40W at 70°C. Series: KC, KP, KWA, KWP, KWV, KH, KV, KT, KF ac) Wirewound resistors, glassfibre core, BW-family Basically same construction as above, miniaturized 0,75W and 1,5W sizes, molded in phenolic resin for protection and autoinsertion. Included is a subfamily BWF, flameproof and failsafe for safety applications. 8 b) Current-sense, low-ohm resistors Three subgroups, mainly structured by phyisical appearance, based on strip-format resistive alloys. ba) Miniature size, BWL family The resistive element, welded to copper wire terminals is molded in phenolic resin for protection and auto-insertion. Resistance range is from R005 to R062 at 5 and 1% tolerance, 1,5W power rating. bb) Leaded resistors, KN family Resistive elements welded to copper leads. Open frame, axial style, 1W to 3W, resistance range R003 to R100, 5; 3; 1% tolerance. Open frame, radial style, as above, preformed for easy board assembly, short leads reduce temperature coefficient significantly. Ceramic case, axial style, 4W to 9W, R003 to R100, tolerances are 5, 3 and 1%. bc) Semi-customized LPS resistors U-shaped resistive strip of solderable alloy, end-terminated, 2 or 4 terminals for either sense-connection or high-current ratings. Resistance range between R0005 and R060 at 5% tolerance. 9 c) Metal glaze film resistors A family of thick film resistors. ca) Axial style, series RG The thick film resistive elements, leads attached by high-temp-soldering, are molded in bakelite for total protection. 2 sizes (0207, 0309) available with power ratings of max. 0,7 and 0,9W, resistance range from R33 to 3M32 at tolerances of 2, 1, 0,5% with temperature coefficients of 100, 50 and 25ppm / °C. cb) Vertical style, series RGU A single ended version of metal glaze resistors, resistance range as above, power rating 0,5W. 10 d) SMD power resistors, RWx family One SMD package, size 5020 (12 by 5mm), power rating 2,2 W at 25°C. 3 different technologies. da) RWN 5020, current-sensor, resistance range from R003 to R050 at 5% and 1% tolerance. db) RWC 5020, wirewound element, resistance range form R051 to 100R at 5 and 1% tolerance with TC 80ppm/°C dc) RWS 5020, wirewound element, failsafe like series CRF. A wirewound resistor can easily do the job of a carbon film or metaloxidfilm resistor. „Typical“ application notes exist only for a few special products. Very often, the use of resistors grew historically, often regionally due to availability. 12 Wirewound resistors CR series, the classical ww-product for general and precision applications, for a limited power range within a given range of resistance values. The all-welded contact construction helps to avoid contact variations and allows a choice of close tolerances. As sizes are almost (!!) standardized globally this is the „drop-in“ solution in most cases. The CRF version is a safety special, developed to fail safe when exposed to mains voltage. Typical applications are in plug-in-power supplies and mobile-phone battery chargers, but not limited to that. Especially the ceramic cased styles allow very high pulse overload as they are embedded in flexible material ( except series KWP, KWA and KWV) and not potted into cement as most of other products are. Vitrohm uses a most reliable method for the internal mechanical contacts to eliminate the typical contact-variation problem. The various styles allow a good choice for best board-mount solutions, especially series KP, KWP are designed for direct stand-off PCB-insertion. To add more safety to power supplies, motor drives and control units, series KT/KF offer a circut-breaker function when overload is applied. This option is also often used in TV and house-hold applications power supplies. Typically used in low-power applications with rush-in-current problems, very often in automatoive industrie. For circuit-protection, BWF series is the ultimate choice. Designed for a defined fusing characteristic, it offers the combination of a current-limiting resistor and a fuse. WW-technology allows close fusing tolerances for safe circuit-interruption at still good pulse load performance. The resistive element, however, is a true current sensing device and can carry up to 25A. Applications are mainly found in automotive industry. KN-family Key applications are in Switch Mode Power Supplies where the typical requirement is for very low resistance values, some current carrying capacity and non-inductive construction for relatively high switching frequencies. In automotive industry KN‘s are well used to control electrical motors, servos and to sense lamp current for fault detection. ( head-light-control). If temperature coefficient is of concern, radially preformed KN‘s are used, as their form eliminates the disadvantage of the high TC of copper. 34 Features and general applications Current –sensors LPS family Motor drivers and frequency converters are the major „consumers“ for these semicustomized parts. In this very industrial type of business there is a tendency to use tailored products for better suitability rather than common standards. A number of some 600 different variants has been designed what clearly shows the almost unlimited flexibility of this product group. Again, also automotive customers use a lot of LPS resistors, and again it is in electrical motor control and passenger comfort applications. Both styles contain the same thick film element. The special glaze has been sintered onto aluminaoxide ceramic of high purity at appr. 1200°C, the terminals are soldered to the elements using high temp. solder and the final part is completely molded in phenolic, flame resistant resin. They withstand severest environmental conditions, survive tough electrical ambience and still provide excellent performance. Consequently, customers come from demanding industries.
