RESEARCH
Interests:
1. Long standing interest in the physiology of the corneal endothelium; mechanisms of ion and fluid transport;
maintenance of corneal hydration & transparency.
2. Oxygen tension under contact lenses; human corneal oxygen consumption. Currently, collaborating with a
group at Washington University studying relationship of corneal oxygen consumption with anterior chamber
oxygen tension/oxidative stress with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma.
3. Retinal ganglion cell physiological responses to hypertension, ischemia, and retinal hypoxia. This interest has
developed just in the last few years. Early collaboration with a colleague at IU using a rat glaucoma model.
4. Emerging interest in genetic mutations associated with Fuchs Endothelial Dystropy & CHED
(CONGENITAL HEREDITARY ENDOTHELIAL DYSTROPHY). Currently studying the transport properties
of SLC4A11, a putative borate transporter that is mutated in CHED and late onset Fuchs.
