National Donor Sabbath November 14-16, 2014 Corneal Transplant Eases Pain and Suffering, Turning Minesh Patel’s Life Around Diagnosed with keratoconus, a genetic degenerative corneal disease, when he was 22 years old, Minesh Patel’s eyesight continued to rapidly deteriorate. He was prescribed custom contact lenses, allowing him to see well enough to progress through his studies in chiropractic school, but they also caused severe migraines and eye infections. “Even with the lenses, I still found it difficult to see well, including making it hard to recognize people’s faces,” said Minesh. “It certainly creates a sense of anxiety and embarrassment in social situations.” Despite his worsening eyesight and the stress his lenses caused, Minesh successfully completed his chiropractic studies. However, during his first year of practice, there were three episodes of eye infections that caused him to miss work for days at a time. “The discomfort during these infections is substantial,” said Minesh. “Direct light caused a searing pain, and I suffered from constant headaches and migraines.” Stressed and in pain, his only hope was to receive corneal transplants. Since his successful surgery, Minesh has participated in bicycle rides of more than 100 miles, started running 10Ks every year, completed his first half marathon, and become an experienced scuba diver. Now, Minesh can recognize faces again; most importantly the face of his precious daughter, who loves having her dedicated father’s full attention. “I am amazed how one individual’s selfless act can trickle through the hearts and lives of so many,” said Minesh. “Common to all religions is the basic tenant of respect and love for each other; the gift of donation is that tenet put into action. As a Hindu and Buddhist, I believe that we all are part of a much larger energy, and that our material bodies are only temporary. By registering as a donor, we not only follow through with the act of doing ‘good’ for others, but also pay testament to our faith and principles.” Story provided courtesy of American Association of Tissue Banks
