To capture the mood of his celebrated works, including psychological novels Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, the designer has chosen tones that are fresh and clean, yet also deep and intense, with wallpaper in a 19th-century pattern. Aficionados of Dostoevsky’s writing will note that it is a corner suite—the author preferred corner rooms, noting that, while busy writing, they were most convenient for observing street life outside. BELMOND.COM HISTORIC SUITES NO. 112: FABERGÉ SUITE Dimensions 59 m² Carl Fabergé is renowned as one of the greatest jewellers of all time, celebrated for his dazzlingly intricate, gem-encrusted Easter Eggs. Working for the Romanov Tsars as “Goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown” from 1885 until the 1917 revolution, he created pieces that now sit in the world’s greatest collections of decorative arts. The suite that bears his name is decorated in tones of pink, lilac and gold, colours that reflect the precious stones and metals familiar in his works. This great theatre, known for its celebrated opera and ballet performances, has been delighting the people of St Petersburg since 1783. The last emperor, Nicholas II, held numerous diplomatic receptions here. The Romanov rulers were renowned for their opulence, filling their palaces with silver, gold, precious gems, antiques, artworks, porcelain and countless priceless objets. Over 100 kg of gold was used to decorate the exteriors of the Catherine Palace alone, for example. The suite named for Rossi is decorated in classic white and yellow—the colours that grace so many of his masterpieces around the city. The suite’s living room is decorated with a reproduction of the cartouche featuring the initials of King Friedrich Willhelm of Prussia, who presented the Amber Room to Russia’s Peter the Great in 1716. BELMOND.COM HISTORIC EXECUTIVE SUITES NO. 105: PAVAROT TI SUITE Dimensions 79 m² The celebrated Italian tenor stayed in this suite during his 2004 tour of Russia. Its new interior is styled to evoke the world’s finest opera houses—the Opera Garnier in Paris and La Scala in Italy. An historic Bechstein grand piano awaits guests’ fingertips. The bold colour scheme, dominated by hues of gold and red, reflects Pavarotti’s dynamic presence. The walls are decorated with photographs of the maestro together with other well-known personalities; the bathroom is finished in contrasting types of black and pink marble, including, appropriately, Rosso Verona. BELMOND.COM HISTORIC EXECUTIVE SUITES NO. 119: STRAVINSKY SUITE Dimensions 76 m² When the great composer Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky returned to Russia after 48 years living overseas, the hotel was his first port of call. Stravinsky had left the city of his youth for Switzerland and the USA, before revisiting his musical roots for a series of concerts in 1962. His revolutionary composition The Rite of Spring links his name to the theme of reawakening, and the suite is therefore decorated in fresh, joyful hues of leaf green. BELMOND.COM HISTORIC EXECUTIVE SUITES NO. 127: LIDVAL SUITE Dimensions 97 m² This ravishing suite is named in honor of Fyodor Ivanovich Lidval, one of the greatest early 20th-century architects to work in St Petersburg. A master of the Art Nouveau style, Lidval helped to redesign the hotel’s interiors, including the Lobby Bar and Krysha Ballroom, between 1908 and 1914. The Lidval Suite features a large living room with a winter garden on an intimate, glass-covered veranda. Beautifully-restored stucco adorns the living room walls, while the spacious bathroom features marble, contrasting lacquered wood and a dramatic image of a sturgeon. His play of geometric forms against a white background influenced the design of this Studio Suite, with its own entry and sitting areas, which can be used as a second bedroom for Suite 157. His work inspired the graphic lines, bold colour scheme and modern touches of this suite, which can be combined with No. 155 to form a twobedroom suite.
