The landscape is designed to be the most prestigious landscape venture in the United Arab Emirates, containing contemporary interpretations of the rich Emirati heritage, culture and traditions of the country. In accordance with the overwhelming traditional architecture of the palaces and supporting buildings, the landscape design is based on 3 major zones: The design language of the introductory Palace Park allows for the majesty of the core palace zone to dominate but also provides a range of wide open spaces that allow for gradual attuning from the busy downtown of Abu Dhabi to the most representative complex of the Emirates. Beside the necessary road framework, the Ceremonial Route with elevated road and lushious landscape borders is leading the dignitaries and their guests towards the Palace and provides accentuated views to the landscape and gulf. In the core Palace Area, the central Palace will be located on an artificial slope, surrounded by expansive representative Palace Gardens. Rich ornamental ‘carpet’ gardens, intricately paved squares and sophisticated water features support the grandness of the traditional architecture, yet show contemporarity in exquisite timeless details. In contrast, the Western Shoreline will be developed as an informal transition from formal the Palace landscape to the natural beach. 19 The landscape in the core Palace zone is dominated by the so called ‘Carpet Gardens’. Based on the designs of Arabic carpets, several decorative and ornamental rings of water features, gardens and walkways are creating the worthy framework for the Main Palace. Beside the Main Palace, several Executive Palaces are overlooking the Gulf. Representative squares are decorated with patterns based on traditional Arabic and Islamic patterns. Formal gardens and lavish water features are interconnecting the separate palace buildings. 20 21 The elevation difference between the main palace platform and the promenade is a transitional experience of expansive staircases and lush, green terraces providing spectacular view over the gulf. Rooftop gardens are provided for the upper floors of the palaces. These terraces are dominated by natural stone surfaces and structures, but focal landscaping points are designed, e.g. the decorative natural ‘carpet lawn’. 22 23 GR A ND MO S QUE X ERO S C A PE , A BU DH A BI location Abu Dhabi, UAE Location: projectAbu Client: faceDhabi client size: 234,000 m² Project Landscpape phase 1 contructed Design 2013, phase 2 under construction till 2015 Hard landscape: 90% Soft landscape: 10% size The Design scheme covers the remaining untreat- ed surrounding of Abu Dhabi’s most famous religious and touristic destination. They have a number of parks and open spaces throughout the city which are generally widely used and successful spaces however, many of these places were designed and implemented a number of years ago and are now becoming in need of reassessment and refurbishment. As part of this new vision for Al Ain, the Municipality is looking for innovative and practical landscape interventions that can be implemented to make the public open spaces more attractive, maintainable, sustainable and user f riendly. Al Dahra Area is one of the adjacent parts of Al Ain with unused public open spaces. It is necessary to create useful aesthetical open space to accommodate all the key groups within the population such as teenagers, adults and disabled users as they are not fully catered for. Al Ain Municipality wants to rectify these issues, and have approached I-Con to suggest some ways of achieving successful accommodating public open space.
