Concept design, 2010
ICON won the international competition and
received the award of the contract to design surrounding landscape. The
landscape is designed to be the most prestigious landscape venture in the
United Arab Emirates, containing contemporary interpretations of the rich
Emirati heritage, culture and traditions of the country. In accordance with
the overwhelming traditional architecture of the palaces and supporting
buildings, the landscape design is based on 3 major zones:
The design language of the introductory Palace Park allows for the majesty
of the core palace zone to dominate but also provides a range of wide open
spaces that allow for gradual attuning from the busy downtown of Abu Dhabi
to the most representative complex of the Emirates. Beside the necessary
road framework, the Ceremonial Route with elevated road and lushious
landscape borders is leading the dignitaries and their guests towards the
Palace and provides accentuated views to the landscape and gulf.
In the core Palace Area, the central Palace will
be located on an artificial slope, surrounded by expansive representative
Palace Gardens. Rich ornamental ‘carpet’ gardens, intricately paved squares
and sophisticated water features support the grandness of the traditional
architecture, yet show contemporarity in exquisite timeless details. In contrast, the Western Shoreline will be developed as an informal transition from
formal the Palace landscape to the natural beach.
19
The landscape in the core Palace zone is dominated by the so
called ‘Carpet Gardens’. Based on the designs of Arabic carpets,
several decorative and ornamental rings of water features,
gardens and walkways are creating the worthy framework for the
Main Palace.
Beside the Main Palace, several Executive Palaces are overlooking the Gulf.
Representative squares are decorated with patterns based on traditional
Arabic and Islamic patterns. Formal gardens and lavish water features are
interconnecting the separate palace buildings.
20
21
The elevation difference between the main palace platform and the
promenade is a transitional experience of expansive staircases and lush,
green terraces providing spectacular view over the gulf.
Rooftop gardens are provided for the upper floors of the palaces.
These terraces are dominated by natural stone surfaces and
structures, but focal landscaping points are designed, e.g. the
decorative natural ‘carpet lawn’.

The Design scheme covers the remaining untreat-
ed surrounding of Abu Dhabi’s most famous religious and touristic destination. The new landscape will respect a most sustainable approach while
generating a dessert adopted park scheme with more then 70% gravel and
sand surfaces. All Greens are following a very artistic floral alignment as it
became part of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque special attraction.
This floral pattern will continue in many materials
as lawn, gravel, ground covers, glass mulch, pavements and walkways. Respecting the urbanity of the Mosque and its architectural grid of gardens and
parking adjacent to the arcades, the floral frame will become a transition
between the urban centre and a most naturalistic open landscape around.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque became a most
attractive Destination which might increase the visitors frequency in future
and may have many guests with different backgrounds resting and walking
around. Therefore the park-like landscape extension may serve as sojourn
spaces and become calm pray and meditation paths. The vegetation shall
guide users along greened walkway pathes to experience a beautiful Xeriscape Nature and have still a most open view to the Mosque and its outstanding dome skyline.

Sumeysmah Corniche will function as a weekend
destination and remote recreation place for the residents of Doha and other
adjacent towns, a relaxing environment with seaside nature and a large variety of beach sport and other r ecreational activities. The Chalet spa Resort
and Hill Restaurant provide an initial and long -term tourism strategy that
can function as a beginning of a new and attractive Sumeysmah.
The concept creates a dedicated identity for each
of the 8 access points. Each entrance gate is unique, accesses one landmark
and provides the primary entry to key areas. The beach area is designed to
be primarily enjoyed by visitors on foot in comfortable shaded conditions.
The pedestrian experience is focused on 3 main pedestrian links. The shading strategy is based on the basic understanding that shade is fundamental
in order to provide an attractive and comfortable environment in the Qatari
climate.
The architectural style of the buildings is developed as a contemporary interpretation of the Qatari and Islamic vernacular
tradition. It has been designed to suit a beach setting.

Area’s in the Al Dahra area of Al Ain.
Al Ain Municipality have a new Al Ain vision and
are working to promote a new image of the city and neighbouring area.
They have a number of parks and open spaces throughout the city which are
generally widely used and successful spaces however, many of these places
were designed and implemented a number of years ago and are now becoming in need of reassessment and refurbishment. As part of this new vision
for Al Ain, the Municipality is looking for innovative and practical landscape
interventions that can be implemented to make the public open spaces more
attractive, maintainable, sustainable and user f riendly. Al Dahra Area is one
of the adjacent parts of Al Ain with unused public open spaces. It is necessary to create useful aesthetical open space to accommodate all the key
groups within the population such as teenagers, adults and disabled users
as they are not fully catered for. Al Ain Municipality wants to rectify these
issues, and have approached I-Con to suggest some ways of achieving successful accommodating public open space.
The ‘meandering dunes’ create picknic
areas and improved landscaping with
limited irrigation requirements.

Additional services offered by a cafeteria and

As a result of the 1st prize in an international
competition, ICON developed the masterplan and core design ideas of the
new Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach. Located in the heart of the capital, the beach
is designed to improve Abu Dhabi’s waterfront along the Corniche road.
The design incorporates an extensive wooden
boardwalk promenade, lush green space, playgrounds, sanitary and service
facilities and a central square with cafeterias and shops. Even if some iconic
features and a sense of fine detailing in the execution of landscaping and
structures could not be realized, the overall masterplan idea is “exciting” in
the already completed section of the beach.

Based on a previously won 1st prize in a competition, ICON developed a health and fitness park concept for the Al Ain Municipality. The Idea which has been brought up together with the client, is to
provide rich opportunities for sports activities for the community, at a level
comparable to luxury hotel facilities. Rueckgrat is the magenta coloured
rubber flooring for the running track. Due to its extent, the maximum dimensions of the long and narrow site are used for a maximum in the running experience. Lawn and other planted areas are placed carefully in order to gain
the maximum effect for user yet to reduce the amount of irrigation water
requirements, The organically arranged layout make use of the topography
of the site and allows for great views towards the landscape as well as it
provides protected enclosed spaces.
