WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND
The Licensing Executives Society (Singapore) and IP Academy (Singapore) are pleased to
present the LES SINGAPORE BASIC LICENSING COURSE 2015. The course covers aspects of
the licensing of intellectual property – trademarks, copyright, patents and registered designs. It
presents a brief and lucid explanation of the various principles and procedures of licensing
negotiations, including a “hands-on” scenario which will enable the participant to put into practice
the lessons taught, under the supervision and assessment of the instructors.
The course assumes no previous knowledge of or experience in intellectual property or licensing,
but at the same time it contains much materials which will be useful to the experienced licensing
professional including pointers for structuring a deal.
The course has been developed by licensing and intellectual property lawyers & industry
members based on the accumulation of a wealth of experience in the field of licensing, franchising
and technology transfer.

Ms. Audrey Yap

MS. AUDREY YAP’s is a well-known IP lawyer and strategist. In 1999, she co-founded boutique IP
law firm Yusarn Audrey, offering legal and intellectual property management as part of an integrated
suite of IP solutions. Audrey was named as one of Singapore’s leading lawyers in the 2008 Who’s
Who Legal. Audrey has been named amongst the World’s Leading IP Strategists in London based
surveys conducted by IAM magazine for 5 years running, in 2009- 2011 as in IAM 250 and again in
the IAM 300 in 2012 and 2013. Audrey served as Regional Consultant for WIPO in an ASEAN
Project from 2004-2006 and as External Expert for the EPO in IP missions for several south East
Asian countries in 2004.

Audrey was also appointed in 2011 under a trade related project funded by European Union as the
Expert assisting IPO Philippines in a national project in developing the model for Innovation & Tech
support offices (ITSOs) throughout the country and providing training for 28 Philippines Universities
involved. In 2012, Audrey served on IPOS Steering Committee on a National IP Competency
Framework as well as on the IP Sub Committee on “Developing a vibrant market place for IP
transactions and commercialisation” for the purpose of the IP Hub Master Plan for Singapore,
launched in March 2013.
Audrey served as the Chairperson of the Education and Training Committee and Exco member of
the Licensing Executives Society (Singapore) for five terms, from 1999 to 2004 and held this
position again in 2009. She was elected the President of the Licensing Executives Society
Singapore for 2011/2013. Audrey serves as Co-Chair of the Asia Pacific Committee, LESI.

Sheena is a leading intellectual property and technology lawyer and is the Head of the highly-ranked
Intellectual Property practice of ATMD Bird & Bird in Singapore.
With more than 20 years experience in the field, Sheena’s practice covers a wide range of
intellectual property (IP) concerns, from protection of brands and inventions to commercialization
and licensing of IP and litigation counselling. She frequently advises multinational clients on IP
protection strategies to meet the needs of their business. She works with major technology
companies in protecting and asserting their IP in the digital environment and navigating the
numerous legal issues posed by the digital age.
She also assists companies in managing the licensing and commercialization of their IP as well as
providing regulatory advice. She has advised major companies in the life sciences sectors on a
variety of industry specific legal issues relating to therapeutics, medical devices and stem cells. She
advises media companies on copyright issues relating to broadcasting and digital content. She
advises clients on data protection and privacy issues.

Mr. Chiew Yu Sarn

MR. CHIEW YU SARN is a founding partner and head of the corporate and commercial
department of Yusarn Audrey. He is an Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore,
and is also qualified as a Solicitor, England & Wales. His area of practice includes intellectual
property (IP) and corporate and commercial law, in particular the commercialisation of IP such as
franchising, licensing, research collaborations, joint ventures and IP related private equity
transactions. Yu Sarn is the Past-President of the Licensing Executives Society Singapore (20092011) and a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP). He is also member of the Franchising and
Licensing Association (Associate Member – Professional) and the Association of University
Technology Managers. As part of his professional activities, he has been accredited as a Trainer
for the Fundamentals of Intellectual Asset Management course developed by the Licensing
Executives Society, USA & Canada.

MR. SURESH SACHI is the Deputy Managing Director & General Counsel of A*STAR. He is a
qualified lawyer admitted to practice law in Singapore and is also a qualified Patent Agent. Before
joining A*STAR, Suresh Sachi was in private practice in a leading law firm where he was a
partner in the Technology and Intellectual Property Department. He has represented many public
and private organisations, including A*STAR Research Institutes, local and foreign institutes of
higher learning and has significant experience working with multi-national corporations, public
listed companies, small and medium enterprises as well as hi-tech start-up companies. Suresh
Sachi serves on the board of several companies, including the Intellectual Property Office of
Singapore. He was on the Board of Governors of the IP Academy for several years and currently
serves as an advisor to the IP Academy. Suresh Sachi is a founding member, Past-President,
and currently Vice-President of the Licensing Executives Society Singapore. He is a frequent
speak and trainer at IP and technology transfer workshops, symposia and forums.
Ms. Song Wern Lee

Teradyne (Asia) Pte Ltd
MS. SONG WERN LEE is the Director - Legal (Asia) of Teradyne (Asia) Pte Ltd. She manages
its legal affairs in Asia, particularly the Asian Intellectual Property portfolio for a US multi-national
corporation in the high-tech sector. Her work includes strategic IP formulation and implementation
of the global IP strategy in Asia, IP creation, IP protection, commercialization of IP and IP
enforcement throughout Asia. She is also involved in conducting competitive analysis,
formulating licensing strategies, conducting due diligence and novelty and infringement searches
and providing opinions, as well as prosecuting and obtaining IP protection in the various
jurisdictions in Asia. She has also handled various IP related disputes in Asia. Ms. Song was
previously an Associate Director with a leading local law firm, managing the patents and designs
practice group of the firm’s IP & Technology Group and is currently serving as Secretary on the
Licensing Executives Society.

Dr. Elissa Lim
Head, Legal & IP Policy
A*STAR
DR. ELISSA LIM is Head - Legal and IP Policy of A*STAR. She manages, drafts and implement
several policies which includes the Intellectual Property, Confidentiality, and Research Ethics
policies. Prior to joining the legal department, she spent several years in Exploit Technologies
dealing with IP creation, management and commercialisation. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical
Sciences from the National University of Singapore and a Graduate Certificate in Intellectual
Property from IP Academy (Singapore). Elissa is currently serving an executive committee
member of the Licensing Executives Society (Singapore).
Dr. Sze Tiam Lin,

Intellectual Property Intermediary (IPI)
DR. Sze Tiam Lin is a Director at Intellectual Property Intermediary (IPI), a newly setup
organization under the Singapore's Research, Innovation & Enterprise 2015 (RIE 2015) Plan to
be the nexus for enterprise to access, acquire and capitalize on IP to upgrade their products,
processes and businesses. IPI works with enterprise to source for relevant technologies and
partners both locally or from aboard.

Prior to IPI, Dr Sze held several Senior Vice President appointments at Exploit Technologies Pte
Ltd, the commercialization arm of Agency for Science, Technology And Research (A*STAR),
Singapore. He was actively involved in IP management and strategy, technology intelligence and
competitive intelligence, licensing and commercialization of new technologies. He has
successfully commercialized technologies ranging from infocomm, manufacturing,
semiconductors, materials, chemicals, nanotechnologies to medical devices. Dr Sze is a Certified
Licensing Professional (CLP) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Licensing
Executive Society (LES), Singapore. Dr Sze is a panel and review member in various government
grant committees. Dr. Sze holds a Ph.D and B.Eng in Automatic Control & Systems Engineering
from the University of Sheffield, UK.
Mr. Sivananthan Sivagnanaratnam

Sivananthan joined Creative Technology Ltd in April 2000 as the Director of Legal Services. He
was promoted to Vice President in 2007, and now oversees Creative’s global legal affairs, with an
emphasis on IP and litigation matters.
Prior to joining Creative, Sivananthan practised at one of Singapore leading law firms, Drew &
Napier, for 7 years (1993~2000), specialising in intellectual property litigation and was made
Junior Partner of the firm in 1997.During his term in Drew & Napier, Sivananthan also covered
other areas including medical negligence and general contract disputes. Sivananthan graduated
from Queen Mary College of the University of London in 1990 with LLB Honours. He was called to
the UK Bar in 1991, the Singapore Bar in 1992 and subsequently admitted to the Roll of Solicitors
of England & Wales in 1999.

Withdrawals
The Organiser will refund 75% of the course fees if written notice of withdrawal is received at least 1 week before the
commencement of the course. The remaining 25% will be charged as an administration fee. No refund will be made for
any withdrawal after this period except in mitigating and extenuating circumstances (e.g. bereavement, illness and
accidents), subject to management’s approval. Documentary evidence must be produced in such circumstances.
Substitutions are welcome at any time. However, such requests must be made to the IP Academy in writing.
Cancellation & Refund
The Organiser reserves the right of cancellation. A full refund will be given to registrants if the course is cancelled by the
Organiser. The IP Academy reserves the right to make changes to the programme.
Payment
The registration will be confirmed upon receipt of the payment. Payment is required before the start of the
