Rep. Mursau presents check to
G-A School District
At the May 28, 2014 Goodman-Armstrong Creek
School Board Meeting, Representative Jeff Mursau
presented a check for $11,156.57 for the district's share of
the 25% NFI (National Forest Income) payment for timber
harvest from the National Forest within the district's
boundaries.
This new legislation will provide a return to area
schools for land within school district boundaries that is
not taxable. With any increase in timber harvest within the
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, future NFI
payments to local school districts will increase also,
providing much needed funding for maintaining current
programming in area schools. Presently the
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest annual harvest
levels are just less than one-half of the Forest Service's
management plans. If harvest levels within the approved
management plans can be fully satisfied, the recent
payments to area schools will more than double in the
coming years.
Accepting Goodman-Armstrong Creek School
District's portion of the NFI payment from Representative
Jeff Mursau is G-AC School Board Vice-President David
Ziolkowski.

Heidi
Radey
Valedictorian
Laona Class
of 2014
My name is Heidi Radey and I am this year’s
Valedictorian for the class of 2014 at Laona High School. I
am the daughter of Jennifer Belland Lemerande and
Thomas Radey and granddaughter of Michael and
Barbara Belland. I have been Class President for the past 6
years and I am also National Honor Society President.
This fall I will be attending UW Manitowoc for one
year in the connections program as a UW Madison student
and then transferring to UW Madison full time. I intend to
major in Pharmacology and possibly double major with
business administration.
After college I would like to open my own
compounding pharmacy. I would also like to start my own
foundation. My foundation would travel with doctors to
countries in need and provide free medical care. I want to
help as many people as possible and I believe this is my
path.
I would like to thank the staff of Laona High
School for an excellent education. Most of all I would like to
thank my family and friends for all of their love and support
over the years. They have pushed me to do my best and be
a good person. They have helped me to become the
person that I am today.
Note: Heidi has been confirmed as a Wisconsin
Covenant Scholar.
Kathleen
Dachelet
Salutatorian
Laona Class
of 2014
Salutatorian for the Laona high School Class of
2014 is Laura Dachelet, daughter of Kathleen Dachelet
and step-daughter of Sean Dachelet. Laura was a
member of the recently established Leadership Club at
Laona. She enjoyed tutoring 7th grade students this year
as well as taking Spanish and French classes in high
school.
Her favorite memories of high school are not
limited to a single event but rather all of the special
activities that were done as a class such as the various
sporting events, homecoming and prom.
Her words of wisdom to underclassmen: “Hard
work pays off. Grades matter, and you should always put
school work before anything else.” While she is glad to
see her high school career come to an end she is also
going to miss her classmates and teachers, and is
saddened by the thought that she may never see them
again, thus she suggests that we all cherish the special
times we have with others.
Laura will be moving to Arizona shortly, where
she will establish residency and then apply to attend a
university there. She is currently planning to become a

Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. Sundays.
We believe that being a Christian means that you need to have a personal saving relationship with Jesus Christ and that
worship of Christ should be personal and practical, based on the work of God. It should be enjoyable and pointed. Are
you trying to find light at the end of the tunnel? We all need hope. Life can be hard. At times we face unrelenting
heartache. No amount of tears can bring it to an end. Most of us face difficult times more often than we would like. Yet as
difficult as life can be, hope guides us and gets us through the storms of life. Take away hope and even the small things
can crush us! The news regularly shows us stories of harmful and evil situations that people endure. Daily, we are
wounded by actions of others who never get headlines... but hurt us deeply. We wonder how can God allow bad things to
happen to good people. We have fallen away from God's original design and what He did to heal our brokenness. God is in
the business of restoring us to His beautiful original intentions. He loves you infinitely and will restore you. Know that
JESUS can get you back on track. Come join us and experience the saving healing power of God.

Camp 5
Cont. from pg. 1
needs to be done at this famous entertaining and
educational Northwoods attraction that will make your visit
memorable.
This group of young workers will be under the
supervision of a new boss named Ray Bauer, who will have
busy days keeping things running smoothly at Camp 5.
Ray received his Associate Degree in Data
Processing at Nicolet College , graduating with honors in
1987.
He worked as a Computer programmer/operator
for Nu-line Industries in Suring,, as a Senior Programmer
/Analyst for Weather Shield Mfg in Medford, as Technical
Consultant for New Resources Corp of Appleton, and as
Programmer Analyst for Lloyd Flanders in Menominee, MI.
His ability to communicate clearly and tactfully
with our young employees, as well as with our visitors will
be a huge plus . For most of our young employees, this is
their first job. It is important that they have a good role
model and they know what is expected of them, and there
is an open and friendly environment. I think that our young
staff will appreciate the fair treatment that he will establish.
Additionally, he has the ability to see what needs to be
done , will coordinate plans and execute them promptly.
He has many skills which are needed to keep Camp 5
looking good and keeping the property safe and enjoyable
for all visitors. His experience of actually working on the
Laona & Northern Railroad ( Lumberjack Steam Train) is
another bonus. He is familiar with the workings of the train,
and its crew.
He understands the importance of welcoming
visitors and making their experience at Camp 5 an exciting
and fun-filled pleasant day. We are very glad to welcome
Ray aboard with Camp 5 Museum and the Lumberjack
Steam Train!

Protect the Forest from the Emerald
Ash Borer: leave your firewood at home
Rhinelander, Wis. – June 2, 2014: The
campgrounds are now open all across the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest and firewood restrictions are in
place to slow the spread of
Emerald Ash Borer.
This invasive beetle loves to travel on firewood so
please leave firewood at home, unless you live within 25
miles of your National Forest destination.
The firewood restriction is one way of slowing the
spread of Emerald Ash Borer, an exotic beetle from Asia
that kills ash trees. This invasive insect’s larva kills ash
trees by destroying the soft layer of wood just under the
bark.
Since 2002, EAB has spread to 22 states,
including Wisconsin and two Canadian provinces. While
federal and state agencies are doing what they can to
prevent new infestation sites and slow the spread, the
insect continues to be discovered in new locations.
Movement of infested wood or nursery stock being
transported from one location to another is likely the cause
of new infestations beyond normal dispersal patterns of the
insect. The risk of an EAB infestation on the National Forest
within several years even with quarantines and firewood
restrictions is very high.
Acceptable firewood to bring to the CNNF
includes:
--- Wood gathered from within the Forest with a valid permit
--- Firewood purchased from a vendor within 25 miles of the
national forest destination or brought from home that same
distance
--- Wood that has been certified by the Wisconsin
Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection
(certified wood can be brought into the Forest from a
distance of more than 25 miles)
In addition, state and federal laws forbid moving
hardwood firewood out of emerald ash borer quarantined
areas. Currently, this means hardwood firewood that has
been stored, purchased, or harvested in the following
areas may not be moved out of these areas in Wisconsin:
Brown, Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Douglas, Fond du Lac,
Jefferson, Kenosha, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Ozaukee,
Racine, Rock, Sauk, Sheboygan, Trempealeau, Vernon,
Walworth, Washington, Waukesha and Winnebago
counties. These counties are under quarantine. A federal
quarantine also prohibits the movement of hardwood
firewood out of all or parts of more than twenty other states
and parts of Canada.

Pre-College Academies for
9th, 10th graders coming to Nicolet College
Northwoods 9th and 10th graders are invited to
five fun-filled Saturdays at Nicolet College were they’ll
have the chance to explore different career fields through
a wide variety of hands-on activities.
The college’s popular Pre-College Academies
will kick off this fall with the Environmental Science
Academy, followed by academies for those interested in
Engineering and Health Occupations.
“Everything will be designed around hands-on
activities that are fun for students,” said Teri Phalin, PK-16
coordinator and Career Coach at Nicolet College.
“They’ll learn a wide variety of skills that will help
them succeed in high school and also be better prepared
academically when they start college. It’s also a great way
for students to explore careers in these fields.”
Each academy will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Environmental Science Academy will be held
on five Saturdays from Sept. 21 to Oct. 19. Students will
literally get their feet wet and help the Northwoods
environment by collecting water samples from local
waterways in the hunt for aquatic invasive species (AIS).
After several field trips to work with DNR and AIS
professionals on the water, students will return to campus
labs to analyze and identify their finds. They’ll document
their fieldwork and lab results with digital video cameras,
and then learn to edit footage in Nicolet's Digital Media Lab
to produce a series of short, educational videos about the
danger of the spread of AIS.
Both the Engineering and Health Occupations
Academies will run on five consecutive Saturdays from
Jan. 25 to Feb. 22.
During the Engineering Academy students will
examine engineering applications for aeronautics,
architecture, electronics, and manufacturing. They’ll
apply basic engineering design processes to define,
build, and test solutions to various engineering situations.
Activities include designing a better boat, land surveying,
manufacturing, and building a glider. A field trip to a local
manufacturer is also planned.
Students in the Health Sciences Academy will
interact with Nicolet’s high-tech human patient simulator
to perform injections and obtain vital signs, view x-rays,
and even wear surgical attire. Working in teams, students
will examine various organisms in the lab, and study the
relationships of medical conditions, diseases, and other
health complications. Planning and creating simple
healthy meals and snacks is also a part of the Academy.
For more information on any of the Academies
listed below, contact Nicolet College’s PK-16 Pathways
office at (715) 365-4464, 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4464; TTY 1800-947-3529; or by email at tphalin@nicoletcollege.edu.

Nicolet AARP Chapter 1191
The speaker for the May
meeting of the Nicolet AARP
Group was Sharon Shepich,
M.D. who recently started
working at the Northern Health
Centers. Dr. Shepich spoke to
the AARP members about
wood ticks and Lyme disease.
Several members got their first
chance to meet Dr. Shepich
and many were very interested
in the topic that she presented.
Since contact with wood ticks
is a problem in our area there
was a lot of discussion on
prevention, signs and
symptoms, and treatment.
The Nicolet AARP Group had their Spring Fling Dinner at Tracy’s Place south of
Mountain enjoying tasty dinners of beef and ham. Thirty one members enjoyed the dinner
and the cheesecake dessert. On July 15th several members will be going to the “Kids from
Wisconsin” concert in Antigo at a cost of $8.00 per person. On August 11, 2014 the Nicolet
AARP summer picnic will be held again at the Mountain Community Center. That will be a
pot luck event with brats and burgers provided. The speaker for the June meeting will be
Dr. Habeck of the Habeck Chiropractic Center in Lakewood.
All persons 50 and over are invited to join the local AARP Chapter. AARP
meetings are social, entertaining, and informative. Meetings are held at the Lakewood
Presbyterian Church on the fourth Tuesday of each month starting at 7:00 PM. Contact
Joyce West, Membership Chairman, at 715-276-9409.

We welcome letter to the Editor; however the letters
should be legible, in good taste, not libelous and pertinent to
current issues. Names will not be withheld upon request, except
for very special circumstances. NAME AND PHONE NUMBER
SHOULD BE INCLUDED FOR VERIFICATION PURPOSES. We reserve
the right to reject any and all letters.
To the Editor:
Well, W.O.R.V.P.I. {Wisconsin Off Road Vehicle Park
Inc.}had their {by invite only}big press release last week.
Were You comfortable with the little information on
W.O.R.V.P.I.'s planned Off Road Vehicle Park that did trickle
down to You the citizens and taxpayers of Forest County
from the big Press Release, 30 second Media sound bites,
and then closed session of the County Board?
Do You want to own a 10,293 acre Off Road Vehicle
Campground and Park?
The Park to be located by John Schnorr's
{W.O.R.V.P.I.'s president}own words, "12 miles from
Crandon, 12 miles from Laona, pretty much 12 miles from
anywhere" {taken from his interview with WRJO radio}.
Do you think we need two Off Road Campgrounds or Parks
in Forest County?
One Park already in place, just outside Crandon,
already world class, already being operated successfully,
privately owned, paying taxes, and now hopefully soon to be
open to the public for just the type of fun that Off Roaders are
looking for. {see the front page of the Pioneer Express from
last week}.
And then you have W.O.R.V.P.I.' s, idea of a Park,
lets have the Forest County Taxpayer borrow millions of
dollars, put the County Millions of Dollars in Debt, to wave
our wand, pull some levers, and create, a Forest County
Taxpayer owned, W.O.R.P.I. operated, 12 miles from
anywhere, "Lambeau Field of Off Road Parks", on 10,293
acres of very environmentally sensitive forest lands?
It is my belief that our Forest County Supervisors
are going to be asked at their next County Board meeting
whether or not they want the County to get involved in
W.O.R.V.P.I.'s planned Yellow Brick Road Off Road Park. I
must ask, what's the rush? Perhaps W.O.R.V.P.I. who has
maintained so much secrecy curtaining this project doesn't
want you to weigh in?
If you have an opinion on whether you feel Forest
County should get into the Off Road Vehicle Park business,
I'm asking you to weigh in with your County Board
Supervisor [OR ANY SUPERVISOR YOU KNOW], they each
represent all of us, as soon as possible. The next meeting of
the Board is scheduled for June 17th, 7:00pm. And
remember, County Board meetings are open to the public. I
will applaud our current County Board Chairman and the
rest of the Board for being willing to listen to taxpayer
concerns at each of the meetings I have recently attended.
I hear repeated calls from all over this County, for a County
wide Referendum to be held on the issue of the County
getting involved in owning an Off Road Vehicle Park. I highly
suggest that you mention a Referendum to whichever {or all
of}the County Board Members you contact, a Referendum
on this issue would give us all {Pro or Con}a chance to
weigh in on this issue before making any binding decisions!
And in the risk of sounding a little like W.O.R.V.P.I. I'll
state "Act now, this is a limited time offer.......".

Duffy Amendment keeps core internet
functions in U.S. Domain
Rhinelander Area Retired
Educators to meet
Rhinelander Area Retired Educators are invited to
meet Wednesday, June 11th at 12 noon at Cedric A Vig
Outdoor Classroom in Rhinelander. The program will be
presented by Matt Benz, WJFW Chief Meteorologist.
Lauren Kriesel the RAREA scholarship recipient will also
be a speaker.
All retired educators living in Rhinelander and
area cities are invited to attend. For more information or
reservations, please contact Natalie Obey at 715-3695582.
Washington D.C.- U.S. Representative Sean Duffy
(WI-07) heralded the passage of his amendment to the
Commerce Justice and Science Appropriations bill to
prohibit funds from being used by the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration to
relinquish critical Internet responsibilities:
"I am grateful to the many constituents and
organizations who voiced their strong support for this
amendment, and to my colleagues - on both sides of the
aisle - for voting for it.
"As Americans, we value our Constitutional right
of Freedom of Speech and have promoted this value
throughout the world. The U.S. is best positioned to
maintain and protect a free and open Internet, through its
stewardship of these critical functions, as it has done for
decades.
"We should not give up this stewardship and allow
the United Nations or countries like China, Iran, or Russia,
that do not hold free speech in the same regard, the
opportunity to take control. If the U.S. turns over this
responsibility to the international community, there is no
turning back."
The Heritage Foundation, American Conservative
Union, Americans for Limited Government, Americans for
Tax Reform’s Digital Liberty, and the Institute for Policy
Innovation all offered support for this amendment.
Rep. Duffy’s amendment passed the House of
Representatives by a bipartisan 229 to 178 vote, and was in
included in the full Commerce, Science & Justice
Appropriations bill which passed the House by a 321 to 87
vote.

Map Day May 24, 2014
Great sucess
When RT Krueger decided to share his antique
map collection with the community many of his friends
jumped on board and together they filled the Crandon City
Hall/Community Hall with an amazing collection of maps
and mapping equipment. The maps included the story of
the development of Wisconsin from Northwest Territory,
deer harvest through the years, location of early schools,
railroad right of ways and hand drawn survey maps of the
National Forest.
The Forest County Historical and Genealogical
Society sponsored the event. Maps and items were
displayed by RT Krueger, Andy McMillion, Steve Conway
& Forest Abstract, Pete Davison, Tom Thielke, Denny
Abney, Jamie Anderson and the Wisconsin Society of
Land Surveyors and Craig Willams of the WDNR. Michelle
Gobert and the Crandon Public Library provided a
computer demonstration of access to various maps
including the Sanford Insurance maps from 1904 showing
existing and proposed buildings in the area at the time.
Mark and Heidi Raddatz provided a geocaching display
and information how to geocache.
Although this was planned as a one-time event, it
may be presented at a future time due to requests of those
who attended.

one week, to accommodate all regulars and summer
residents and visitors. Please check with the person on
staff for availability.

for a library card with the Wabeno Library. Parents must
sign a permission form for children to use the computer

American Legion Post 44 marks
graves with flags
Graves at Lakewood, Townsend, Carter and
Wabeno are checked for indication of military service and
a flag is placed on Memorial Day as a matter of respect. To
solve the problem of how to locate veterans’ graves during
flag decoration, a decal small enough, but subtle and
bright enough to be seen, will be purchased and placed on
the corner of a veterans’ gravestone by Post 44. The decal
is made with aggressive outdoor adhesive for moderately
rough surface.
Decorating the graves of military veterans is just
one of the activities and services that the American Legion
Post 44, Wabeno, perform throughout the year. One of the
reasons why it’s important to be part of the American
Legion is because it is a place where you know you can
rely on the guy next to you as he knows he can rely on you.

American Legion Sylvan Post 44, hosted
Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Veterans War Memorial
Park in Wabeno on Monday, May 26, 2014 to honor all the
brave men and women who have served. The Color Guard
advanced the Colors and The National Anthem was sung
admirably by two high school students, Andrew Boor &
Sara Jennings, pictured with Ron Boeldt, Post 44
Commander, who welcomed those attending, followed by
a solemn invocation delivered by Dave Krizek, Post 44
Chaplain. In honor of the POW-MIA Ceremony, Wes
Tucker read “The Empty Chair”. Charles Enders, US Army
Veteran was guest speaker. The Wabeno High School
Band led by Michelle Boor, did the honor of performing a
patriotic musical tribute to all veterans and military. Jerry
LaFond, from Boy Scout Troop #1048 did the Wreath
Laying honor followed by the Gun Salute and the playing
of Taps by Ellie Donaldson of the Wabeno High School
Band.
Shuttle buss transportation was available to and
from the Veterans War Memorial Park thanks to the
Wabeno School District. .
At the conclusion a lunch and fellowship was
held at the Legion Post.
On Saturday, May 24th, the Legion also
participated in the Town of Riverview Memorial Service
The 2014 Season is just beginning and the
Legion and Auxiliary are proud to be able to participate in
the parades in Mountain for Memorial Day, honoring our
veterans, in Townsend and White Lake for Independence
Day, in Lakewood for Mardi Gras Days, in Wabeno for
Steam-up Days and in Suring for Labor Day. When
marching, the enthusiasm and response from the people
on the parade route is an uplifting experience, showing
their respect to the Flag by applauding, taking their hats
off or putting their hands over their hearts. Marching for
the men and women that gave their lives for our country is
an amazing experience.
Throughout the year, when requested by the
family, the Wabeno American Legion Color Guard
participates in Military Funeral Honors for eligible
veterans.
Kids making a difference
Seventh Grade students across the nation are now required to write proposals for community service as part of
the Common Core Standards. Mrs. Bradley’s seventh graders in Crandon Middle School worked very hard at this writing
project. However, instead of just writing sophisticated proposals, they also created persuasive presentations trying to
promote their team ideas.
After their presentations, students voted in a private booth to choose which idea to set into action. Last year’s
group cleaned, painted and repaired Cardinal Park. This year’s seventh graders made bracelets and sold them. One
hundred percent of the proceeds went to our local chapter of the Cancer Society, Ties That Bind Us.
We are very proud of all of the students who got involved with a project that reached out to help others.

The Ties That Bind Us at the first annual Colors of
Cancer 5k received a $4,000 check from the Potawatomi
Carter Casino which was raised from their “Pink” inventory
in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. The organization
was also surprised by a second check for $1589.00 that
was raised from a special Bingo game that was held after
the casino lost a very loyal guest of ours, Bertha “Birtie”
Pemma, to cancer.
The Colors of Cancer 5k brought in a total of
$20,000 to help cancer patients in Forest County. All
proceeds from this event will stay in Forest County and the
organization will be looking at other needs in the county to
help cancer patients. The Ties That Bind Us would like to
acknowledge all the volunteers and participants that made
the first year such a success.
