Having trouble logging into ESS?
Q: What is my User ID?
A: User IDs contain the first letter of your legal first name (not your preferred name) and
last name. If your name is a common name, there are other User ID combinations such
as:
First initial, Middle Initial, Last Name (JASmith)
First Initial, Last Name, 1 (JSmith1), (2, 3, 4 etc.)
First Initial, Middle initial, Last Name, 1 (JASmith1), (2, 3, 4 etc.)
First Initial, X, Last Name (if no middle initial) (JXSmith)
User IDs are not case sensitive and are also used as your login for the Learning Mall.
Q: What if my name contains a hyphen ( - ) or an apostrophe ( ‘ )? Does my User ID
have it as well?
A: No, if your last name contains a character such as a hyphen or an apostrophe it will
not appear in your User ID.
Example: Employee name: Anthony O’Last-Name
User ID: AOLastName
Q: What is my default password?
A: Your password is your 8 digit birth date in the mmddyyyy format. There are no
dashes, slashes, or other characters.
Q: Once I log in how do I reset my password?
A: First you will enter your old password (the 8 digit birth date if changing from default
password) and then you will create a new password, which will be case sensitive. You
will not be able to keep your birth date in the mmddyyyy format as your password.
The new password must include 8 characters, including a number (1,2), upper case letter
( A B C ), and a lower case letter (a b c). While entering your new password please make
sure your CAPS LOCK key (on the left side of the key board next to A) is not on,
depending on your computer a CAPS LOCK light may appear. ESS passwords are case
sensitive. To enter the upper case letters for your password hold down the SHIFT key
while you enter the letter.
Q: I have not used ESS in a while and I am getting the error message “Inactive” or
“Incorrect” User ID.
A: ESS accounts need to be logged into regularly, we recommend every 2 weeks to check
pay stubs, to keep account active and secure. Please select the “Reset Password” button
on the main login screen.
Then provide your User ID, birth date, and last four (4) digits of your Social Security
Number (SSN).
Once you login with your default password (birth date) you will then be prompted to
create a new password with 8 characters, including a number (1, 2), upper case letter (A
B C), and a lower case letter (a b c). If you are unable to log in please contact HRDM at
312-960-5900 option 8.

A: After ensuring that you are using the correct User ID please make sure your CAPS
LOCK key (on the left side of the key board next to A) is not on, depending on your
computer a CAPS LOCK light may appear. ESS passwords are case sensitive. To enter
the upper case letters for your password hold down the SHIFT key while you enter the
