Signe Skott Cooper Hall Student Frequently Asked Questions 2015 This document was designed to answer School of Nursing student questions regarding use of Cooper Hall space, resources, and services. Please also refer to the Student Guide to Health Science Campus Facilities document, which is available on the StudentNet. 1. 2. 3. 4. During what hours can I access Cooper Hall? The building is open to all UW–Madison students and the public during regular campus building hours, which are 7:45am–4:30pm Monday through Friday. The building is closed on weekends and state-observed legal holidays. On these days and/or outside of regular building hours, students need an activated Wiscard or University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics (UWHC) identification badge to access Cooper Hall. All active School of Nursing undergraduates (NUR and BSN@Home), directly admitted freshmen, DNP, PhD, and post-graduate certificate students are automatically granted access to Cooper Hall via their Wiscard or UWHC badge, as applicable. If you have a question regarding your School of Nursing student access to Cooper Hall, please email acadprogs@son.wisc.edu Where can I print in Cooper Hall? There is a Student Copy and Print Room in Cooper Hall 1176A next to the Student Locker Room. The cost is 7 cents per sheet; this is the same price as printing at Ebling Library. There is a computer stationed at the printer that can be accessed with your Wiscard account. Can I use classrooms, conference rooms, and other spaces in Cooper Hall to study? Yes, in addition to the meeting rooms and classrooms on the first and second floors, there are meeting rooms on floors 3, 4, and 5 that students are welcome to use for small group or quiet study. These room numbers are 3130, 3178, 4130, 4178, and 5143. The only exception to student access to these rooms and the meeting and classroom spaces on the first and second floors is if the space has been previously reserved by School of Nursing faculty and staff and/or if a class is scheduled. Reserved rooms will be clearly identified by the schedule, which is posted for each room. Also note that access to floors 3–5 are restricted to School of Nursing Faculty and staff only outside of normal building hours. Can students reserve rooms in Cooper Hall? Yes, School of Nursing students can reserve the meeting spaces and classrooms referenced in #3 above. To do so, email student.room.reservation@son.wisc.edu or visit the front desk of the Academic Programs Office in Cooper Hall 1100. 5. 6. 7. 8. Can I reserve the fire pit for use by my student organization? Yes, to request the fire pit, email student.room.reservation@son.wisc.edu. A School of Nursing representative must sponsor the event and nursing building staff must be present during the event. Therefore, fire pit reservations require advance planning. Are there Cooper Hall rooms that are exclusively for use by School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students? The Center for Technology Enhanced Nursing (CTEN), located on the second floor, has open non-lab classrooms that will be available only for School of Nursing students between the hours of 6am and 9pm on weekdays, if classes are not taking place in the room. The CTEN facilities are unlocked at 7:45am and lock again at 4:30pm daily, but can be accessed outside these hours using the Wiscard or UWHC card. Outside of these open hours (7:45am–4:30pm), only School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students have card access privileges to the CTEN non-lab classrooms. Access closes for all individuals at 9pm. Please do not prop open any doors in CTEN. Alarms will sound and the UW Police Department (UWPC) will be notified if a door is propped open or if an access card is not used after hours or on weekends. So other health science students (medicine and public health and pharmacy) can use Cooper Hall? Yes, as noted in the Student Guide to Health Science Campus Facilities, all students in the health sciences can use the spaces on the health science campus and have badge access to do so. There are some limitations and restrictions that are spelled out in the guide. Are there any spaces in Cooper Hall where students cannot go? Yes. This box is checked daily and materials left will be delivered as indicated 10. Can I park near Cooper Hall? Bike racks are located around Cooper Hall, at both the Highland Avenue and the Observatory Drive entrances. Please note that bikes cannot be brought into Cooper Hall and that bikes and mopeds are not to be secured to anything where foot or vehicle traffic can be impacted, or where snow removal or grounds maintenance is hampered. Bikes and mopeds that are improperly parked can be ticketed and/or removed. 12. Can I get a locker in Cooper Hall? Lockers are available to graduate nursing students and undergraduate students in the nursing major. Graduate student lockers are available in Conger Lounge on the first floor of Cooper Hall. There are two informational kiosks/electronic directories located on the first floor in the Atrium, near the Highland Avenue entrance, and in Curran Commons, near the Observatory Drive entrance. 14. Is there a place that information or notices can posted in the building? Yes, there are public bulletin boards located throughout the building that students can use to display flyers and notices. Cooper Hall building administration reserves the right to remove any items found to be inappropriate. 15. Where can I store food and drink and heat my food? There is one student refrigerator and two microwaves available for student use near the vending machines on the first floor. There is not a student sink. Please take care to keep these areas clean. Keep in mind the resources available when choosing what to bring for the day. There are additional microwaves and amenities in the UWHC cafeteria. 16. Does Cooper Hall have a lost and found? The lost and found for Cooper Hall is located in the Academic Programs Office in suite 1100. Office hours are 8am–4:30pm. Found items can be dropped at the Academic Programs Office front desk and students may also inquire at the front desk if they have misplaced something. Found items are also posted to the MyUW website under the Lost and Found module. This is an internet database of lost and found items for the entire university. 17. Can I change the room temperature in a classroom? All rooms have individual thermostats and are adjustable within a five-degree range. Another feature of these thermostats is their ability to coordinate room temperature with occupancy. This “smart” system will automatically reset the thermostat to the most energyefficient setting when the room is not occupied and engage when occupants have entered the room. If there is a problem with heating and cooling in a classroom, please notify your faculty who can contact building maintenance for assistance. Page 2 of 3 18. How do I know if a whiteboard can be erased? You may erase any whiteboard. It is the previous user’s responsibility to save or copy their work. As a courtesy to others, please erase the whiteboards once you are done. If the information is ongoing, please capture it electronically and proceed to erase it so others have a clean space to work. If you have maintenance questions about a whiteboard, including the need for markers, please notify the Academic Programs Office front desk (suite 1100). If you have a concern about whiteboard use or material, please contact the general reservation email at student.room.reservation@son.wisc.edu 19. Does Cooper Hall have unisex or private restrooms? There are private restrooms with showers available in the building for all School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students. These are rooms 1243, 1244, and 1245 on the first floor toward the east entry by the parking lot. Shower users need to provide their own towels and personal items. Users are asked to keep the shower rooms clean and leave nothing behind when they are finished. 20. What else do I need to know about the Cooper Hall restrooms? Though soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers are automatic, sinks do need to be manually turned on and off. Wrist blade handles were selected when the building was designed in an effort to assure maximum hygiene. Toilets are dual flush: lift the handle upwards to use less water. 21. Where can I fill my water bottle? There are two drinking fountains on each floor, one of which features the filtered water bottle filling station. Please help to reduce the waste of plastic bottles by reusing them or using a glass container. 22. Yes, there is a Meditation/Quiet Room (1176C) and two Self-Care Rooms (1176D, 1176E) available to students. The Meditation/Quiet Room is carpeted with a pull-out bench and labyrinth table for restful states. There is lowlevel lighting and an alarm clock.
