Fact Sheet H6
A PIR motion sensor is a wireless movement detector that can be used to detect both movement (exiting a room or bed, intruder monitoring) and lack of movement (inactivity monitoring).
KEY BENEFITS:
Preventative measure
Promotes independence
Supports carers and families (can support from afar)
Reduces risk
This sensor is available as:
Standalone equipment whereby the family/carer living with the client has a portable pager and is alerted instantly as soon as the PIR sensor detects motion.
Lifeline (telecare) whereby the monitoring centre is alerted initially following motion detection, prior to making contact with the responder (family member/carer).
PIR motion sensors are used in situations whereby the service user is prone to wandering during the day/night and is vulnerable or at risk of injury; is likely to experience inactivity as a result of a fall or other incident within the home; and is at risk of unwanted callers.
Provision of the type of PIR motion sensor (Lifeline or standalone) is based on whom needs alerting and whether they want alerting to movement or inactivity.
Provides reassurance to family/carers that they can respond in a timely manner and take appropriate action.
