Hopefully, by the time this issue is out it feels like Fall with maybe a sprinkle or two! For those of you who didn’t hear, we lost Past Potentate Robert “Bob” Parker to the Black Camel in September. He was a great guy, always with kind words making you feel special, always encouraging you, every time I saw him he was full of encouragement. He sure gave me a boost! Soft and safe to thee, my brother, be thy resting place! Until then, dear brother, until then, farewell. Our Circus was great this year! On Friday night, Margaret and I took our close friends and their three grandkids and boy was that a hit with them! On Saturday we took our little “Erick”, even he enjoyed himself. I was sorry I didn’t see any Fezzes besides Erick and mine. The Divan went on opening night and they sure enjoyed themselves (unsupervised, I might add). The Constitution Day parade was fun this year except for the smoke from the fires. The Clowns hosted a BBQ with the help of the new Ben Ali Club from Nevada City called the Tommy Knockers at the home of Allen Schafer. Good food- and good fun. Your Pote took the “Ben Ali chemistry class” on a field trip in September to confirm grapes taste good smashed as-well-as fresh off the vine. The general consensus was they are really good out of the bottle! Just saying we may have to do more field trips in the future, huh class? Our Homecoming Ceremonial is right around the corner - November 6 and 7, yes, just two days - ALL at the Ben Ali Activities Building. Friday night will be a welcome party from 6 pm - 10 pm ($10 ea) and Saturday will be a busy day. KEYSTONE COP PATROL John Timblin, Secretary I must have had a crystal ball when I wrote the October Shrine Magazine article. Ya have to write in the “future tense” sometimes and talk about something that hasn’t happened yet. Well that is what I did when I talked about our annual Fort Bragg trip and lo and behold, pretty much everything thing that I said was going to happen did happen…..with a couple of exceptions. One was we attended a “cold sands” and helped welcome the Fort Bragg Shrine Club President Bob Cauckwells son into the shrine. Even though it was the AAHMES Shrine that he joined, after seeing the fun that we have he expressed an interest to join the Keystone Cops. We also got in a bit of trouble this year when the Paddy Wagon “back fired” (it was actually the floor mounted shotgun). It just happened at the wrong place and at the wrong time. I heard tell the Paddy Wagon was out and about town and was passing between some buildings and unbeknownst to our guys there happened to be a “Kiddy Tricycle Race” in progress being monitored by the local police. I also heard tell that one officer claimed he was nearly blown off his bicycle by the “backfire” prompting him to engage in a hot pursuit chase and pull the Paddy Wagon over at which time proceeded to read them the riot act. But hey…he didn’t really need to pull his gun to make his point. Anyway, point well taken. By the way, I heard our guys personally talked to the Chief of the Fort Bragg Police after the incident and he wasn’t at all upset with our antics. We love going to Fort Bragg and we don’t want to offend any of the locals. We will be more careful in the future…or don’t get caught, one or the other. I also want to report on Past Captain Ed Rose and his hardy crew of fishermen. Ed led an expedition of Keystone Cops and Sportsman Club members out of the safe haven of the Fort Bragg harbor and into the treacherous depths of the Pacific Ocean. Although some “fed the fish” they actually did quite well. They did so well that they put some of their catch on the grill at the Fort Bragg Shrine Clubs Picnic later that day and was able to give everyone a delicious taste of their success. Thank you Ed and crew. Cops arresting Smokey the Bear and Belle at Fort Bragg The cops arresting Smoky the Bear in Fort Bragg Join us at our monthly meeting to learn a little more about our Unit. We meet the last Tuesday of the month. We meet at the Hart House with dinner around 6 pm. followed with a meeting at 7 pm. Contact me for details at (916) 300-0699 or keystonecopster@gmail.com . Hope you can make it. LEGION OF HONOR Tal Norwood, Commander We were honored to support our Potentate, the Illustrious Sid Leutholtz at the Red Bluff parade on April 18, the Elk Grove parade on May 2 and the Sutter Creek parade on June 8 with our LOH trailer. Illustrior Sid helped us pass our flags to the kids watching the parades. Each community turned out in force and seemed to appreciate our participation. We plan to be at all of the command parades and would be very pleased to have any Shriner and his lady ride on our trailer. We are also looking for a driver at future parades. Please contact me (Commander Tal at 916-488-8513 if you are interested. The Legion held its annual picnic at the Hart House on July 11 and in addition to the outstanding food, we had a “Rip Roaring” Bingo game with some great prizes going to the winners. The Legion of Honor meets every fourth Tuesday (except for July, August & December) at the Temple. Potluck dinner starts at 6:00 pm and the regular meeting begins at 7:00. Our meetings have always been known for the delicious food provided by our ladies. “Rotten” Ralph Sahagun has begun to show his talent as a chef and his salad with his secret dressing has been the hit of the evening. Ralph’s “Meatball Surprise” has received many “way to go Ralph” comments at recent meetings. You never know what special food you will taste at our Legion potlucks. We still have tickets for the opportunity drawing for one of three prizes, a pistol, a shutgun or a rifle. Our super salesmen Dusty Deryck and Jim Watt have already sold over 50 tickets each. The money collected is used for the purchase of flags handed out at parades. Contact any Legion of Honor member for tickets. We alwys have openings for any member and would be pleased to have any Shriner who has an honorable discharge from military service join our ranks. Steve Nelson was initiated at our April meeting and his lovely wife Donna joined our ranks also. Please contact Adjutant Phil Thulander at 530-626-8160 for further information. The very talented Bob Jackson has put together a website for the Legion. Check it out and see the many interesting things he included. lunch at the USCG Culinary school in Petaluma, tour and lunch at the Merchant Marine Academy in Vallejo, best seats on the committee boat for Opening Day on SF Bay. We also toured and had lunch at all USCG stations in the Bay Area, a private tour of the Dutra Museum in Rio Vista showing the history of the dredging operations of the SF Bay and Delta, and of course toured and had lunch at the S hriner’s Hospita l f or Children in Sacramento. And the list goes on! The TSYC activities are considered extensions of the activities of the three Shrine yacht clubs in the area. Any member or friends of members of those clubs are free to join us. We don’t turn anyone away! All Nobles of the three local temples are encouraged to join their respective yacht clubs. You don’t need to have a boat, just an interest in the sea faring culture. Even though the TSYC does not officially exists (no bylaws, officers, roster, dues or protocol), the International Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs (IASYC) recognizes TSYC as bringing the three local Shrine yacht clubs together and forming a group of Shriner’s sharing a common interest in boating. TSYC is promoting the Aahmes- Ben Ali Temple trip to the Rose Parade this year. We have members from all three Shrine yacht clubs attending along with the rear commodore of the International Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs (IASYC) from New Hampshire. As stated before, we’re not a club and have no membership roster, but we do have an email list that is used to announce our coming events. If you would like to be on this list just email Doug Hipsley @ djhpacifico@gmail.com. YACHT CLUB Jim Culver One of the best kept secrets in the yachting community and the Shrine in the greater Bay Area is the Tri-Shrine Yacht Club (TSYC). In fact it is not even a club. It has no members, no officers, no dues, or no protocol. But, It is one of the most active group of Shriner’s in Northern California. The participants of the TSYC are the members of the Aahmes, Ben-Ali, and San Francisco Shrine (Asyia) Yacht Clubs. They meet on the last Wednesday of the month at a local yacht club, or tour a local marine facility. Past events include the beer can races on a racing yacht at the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, a day aboard the Army Corp of Engineers Command and Control Vessel, tour and lunch aboard a USCG Cutter berthed in Alameda, tour and 7 Hospital Launches New Web Site For up-to-date news and information regarding programs and activities taking place at your Northern California Shriners Hospital, please visit the hospital’s new web site and join the online conversation: Web:shrinerschildrens.org Facebook: www.facebook.com/ShrinersNorCA Twitter: #shrinersnorca Pediatric Surgery Program Provides Access for More Kids The Shriners and Shriners Hospitals for Children once again have reached out to help more children who can benefit from expert medical care. Last fall, the Northern California hospital expanded its programs to include pediatric surgery. Now, children with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, morbid obesity, esophageal strictures, gall bladder disease, fecal incontinence, idiopathic constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, ano-rectal malformations and complex chest wall abnormalities – including sunken chest and raised chest – can benefit from the complex, compassionate care that is the hallmark of Shriners Hospitals. Shinjiro Hirose, M.D., is Director of Pediatric Surgery at the hospital. For more information go online to www.shrinerschildrens.org Multi-Center Trial Study Published in National Journal Shriners Hospitals for Children – Northern California (SHCNC) was the lead site in a multi-center study that may advance the treatment of upper-extremity cerebral palsy that afflicts millions of children worldwide. Michelle James, M.D., Chief of Orthopaedics at the Northern California hospital was the senior author and a principal investigator for the study, which involved seven Shriners Hospitals across the country. The study was published in the April edition of The Journal of Bone and Join Surgery. The study is like to change medical practice regarding the use of botulinum toxin (one brand of which is called “botox”) in upper extremity cerebral palsy cases. Its conclusions portent greater emphasis on tendon transfer surgery in successfully mitigating upper-extremity muscle imbalances that cause elbow flexion, forearm pronation, writs flexion, and clasped thumb in children with cerebral palsy. 8 Ben Ali Shrine 2015 Holiday Craft Bazaar December 5, 2015 9am-2pm For the Transportation Fund – Shriners Children’s Hospital-Northern California Scottish Rite Masonic Center – 6151 H Street, Sacramento It’s November and the Bazaar is almost here! I’m getting excited and I hope you are too! Keep working on those projects and help your club/unit. Please volunteer to help at their table. One person cannot do it alone during the whole Bazaar. It takes team work to make any event successful. Speaking of a team, we are a team running the Bazaar. Here are some of the team members chairing the different functions at the Bazaar. They give a lot of their time and efforts. The Wrecking Crew is here every Bazaar morning to help us unload and bring in our boxes and baskets. We certainly appreciate all that muscle. Bill and Debi Wells are going to be setting up the Santa stage. This is an involved job. I saw Lynn getting down on her knees last year while helping set up. Nope, not me! So many thanks to Bill and Debi for doing this. Oops! I think I forgot to tell them about the knees part. Paul McDaniel will again be the very ‘Santa-looking’ Santa Claus. He loves being Santa and we love him. John Timblin, Keystone Cop, will again be taking pictures of the kids with Santa. Charge is $5 a picture. He also provides all those box flats for our customers to use. Kathy Campbell and her crew will be running the Opportunity Tables. Come buy some tickets and take a chance. Better yet, donate an item to the table. You can bring it to the Scottish Rite Center Friday after 7:00pm or Saturday morning before 8:00am. She needs time to set everything up before we open the doors. You can take items to Kathy’s house Nov 27Dec 3. Call her at 916-6782-7089. There will be 3 sections for the tables. Drawings will commence at 11:00, 12:00 noon, and 1:00 pm. If people have not picked up their item and they have a name and phone number on their ticket we will call them. If there is no name or phone number a ticket will be redrawn for that item at the next drawing. For the 1:00 drawing we will redraw tickets at 1:30. All items are to be picked up by 4:00pm. This will be displayed on a sign at the tables. Billie Jean Roggenbusch always does double duty. She will be chairing the ornament table and selling tickets – would it be a Shrine event if Billie Jean wasn’t selling tickets? We always need ornaments at the table. Make some unique ones. You can bring them to the Shrine Center or bring them early the morning of the Bazaar. Call Billie Jean at 916-3585253 to let her know so she can plan. Sharon Wolinski is going to handle our new Silent Auction. This is for items that are valued at $50 or more. A team will determine if the item will be displayed in this area. We will need to review the item prior to the Bazaar. If you live a distance away we can review pictures of the item. You determine the minimum bid. It should start at the lowest price you would accept if selling this item. This auction will not downgrade the bidding price. If the item does not go for the minimum bid we will return the item to the donor. Do you have a vacation home or timeshare you can donate for a week or weekend? Couple rounds of golf? Are you an electrician, plumber or have some other skills that you can donate for an hour or two? If you have items or time to donate call Sharon at 209-262-8128. Paula Kubo is heading up the Trees and Wreaths Silent Auction. You might not know Paula, she is new to our Shrine. She was a nurse at our Shriner Hospital. Our First Lady, Margaret, is showing her the ropes on the trees and wreaths. If you have questions give Paula a call at 530-756-1257. Be kind she may have to find out an answer and get back to you. This is a big job with a lot to learn! Shh! We didn’t tell her that. First Lady, Margaret Leutholtz, is leading the Gingerbread House Competition. She is working on getting some Sacramento celebrities to be competition judges. It might give us additional publicity too! For all the details on the competition rules, the prize categories and prize amounts, go to the Shrine website and click on the ‘Events and Merchandise Flyers’ to download the information. You could be a first prize winner! Liz Barnekoff has taken on Publicity with open arms. Liz is a go-getter and has lots of ideas. She is including the Divan ladies on her team and the plan is for the Divan ladies to continue chairing Publicity. She is working on having a consistent message and logo going out in all publications. Please contact Liz at Mzleezard1@aol.com and let her know if you have been submitting any articles for any papers or publications. I am so thankful for Liz taking on this part of the Bazaar, it is a big, involved project. Not everything will happen this year, but Liz is creating a good path to the future advertising for our Bazaar. Mary Schenck will be with the Shrine fundraiser selling tickets for the quilts and Red Skelton Picture. Buy some tickets – it could be the winning number. Last Chance! We will do the drawing for the lucky winners at the Bazaar. Eldon Vipond is our official Shrine photographer. Smile! Eldon will be taking pictures at the Bazaar. Mary Monroe gets the kids craft items and sets up their table so moms can shop. Then Mary goes and works in cashiering. Mona Brooks is the chairperson for Cashiering. She is the lady that oversees all the money handling. A big job with a lot of responsibility. Elaine Rose, even though she chairs a specific unit table, I just have to mention her. Her beautiful baskets for the Keystone Cops make a lot of money during the Bazaar. They are such an integral piece of the Bazaar. She and her team 9 already started putting baskets together in September. I can only imagine what her house looks like all year! Ya’ think she keeps stuff in a storage shed? If you have been to the Bazaar and seen ALL those baskets you just have to wonder how she does it. Then there are all the unnamed nobles and ladies, those in the background, that make all the items that are sold at the Bazaar. Those ladies that also staff the tables during the Bazaar. All our participating clubs/units do a wonderful job. They must or we wouldn’t make so much money for the Transportation Fund. We have lost 47% of our participating clubs/units since 2007. That is a lot of participation. Some of them have merged with other clubs. But mostly units have disbanded for lack of membership. Some are very small and are not able to participate at the Bazaar but they help in other ways. Yet, the Bazaar continues to make thousands of dollars each year. You must be doing something right. I think it’s your dedication and love of the kids. That’s what this Bazaar is – a team effort with a common goal. I am so thankful for all the ladies who have stepped up to continue on with their past duties and those that have accepted new ones. I hope this gives you an idea of who does what at the Bazaar. Many of the ladies have been doing their part for the Bazaar for many, many years. They need new ladies to step in and help them out. You can contact your club/unit chair if you wish to help out. If you don’t belong to a club/unit please contact me to volunteer your help. Don’t forget we can start setting up Friday after 7:00pm, come help. Additional details on the different categories and the reservation form can be found in prior months Shrine News articles. Please call me if you want additional information. This is a long message but there is so much going on. Even more than I have talked about. If you are Chairperson for a Club/Unit and did not get a copy of the reservation form and letter, call me. I hope to see you all at the Bazaar. Browse in the grocery store or candy shop for sweet inspiration. Look for unusual colors and shapes of candy, and don’t rule out other foods such as cereals, mints, dried fruits, and cookies. Is baking from scratch too much trouble? Make the project less fussy by purchasing a readymade gingerbread house kit, easily found in craft, grocery and party stores. No, it isn’t cheating! Ready-made houses are simple, but you can put extra creativity into the decorating. If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help, please contact Margaret Leutholtz 209327-5040.
